    Marcus makes me sad. He saw how his mentor had an underhanded deal with Vander and did the same with Silco out of naiveté and found himself trapped, having made a deal with a monster. Like they say the path to hell is paved with good intentions.

    • @masekyn5480
      @masekyn5480 11 місяців тому +23

      the issue I have with Marcus is that he doesn’t have any empathy or respect for zaunites compared to Grayson who would at least try to understand them and see them as people. everything Marcus did in the first act was out of spite and his desire of control over zaunites, like portrayed in his encounters with Vander. and he locked up a 14-16 years old girl, indirectly killed Benzo and Grayson because of his deal with Silco. he only starts to feel guilt as a corrupt sheriff with a daughter, years after. and again, as portrayed in the grenade scene with Silco, it’s mostly because of his lack of control over the situation. it indeed makes the character flawed and gives him depth, but i hardly feel bad for him. he deserves everything that happens next.

      Markus makes it hard for me watch this show. Being betrayed and still making deals with Silco is just dumb as hell. Good intentions aren't worth anything to me if you do the same thing again and expect things to change. Silco changed the deal once in a whim, why shouldn't he continue to behave like that? Making another deal with him is just selling yourself.

Viktor says it himself, we always have a choice, and many are the times he could’ve behaved better. but he’s portrayed as a coward, that has responsibility, yes, but still a coward that can only dream to be as respectable and well driven as Grayson. and of course, i understand your point of view on the character and i only love arcane more now knowing a different opinion

So Markus chose to go on working with Silco instead of confessing one fault so he makes more and more faults to conceal the first one. That's human behaviour, of course, but still pretty dumb. Silco wasn't honest before so why he thinks Silco wouldn't sell him as soon as he's not profitable anymore? Hoping Silco won't betray him is hoping Silco doesn't Silco.

    I don't think I've seen a single reactor to this show get that Marcus is trying to follow Grayson's example by working with Silco. He saw her working with Vander (the de facto leader of the undercity) so he tries to do the same with the new leader of the undercity.
    It doesn't excuse everything he's done, but nobody seems to get his motivations and just label him as trash.

      People never seem to understand that Silco has leverage over him and he’s locked into working with Silco. So, even in the face of morally gray actions, they force the characters into the black or white zones that they’ve preconceived in their own heads.

      No he isn't, has nothing to do with Grayson. he's stuck because of Episode 3, Silco deliberately engineered the situation to have Marcus implicated in the murder of Grayson and now Marcus can't get out of their arrangement without that coming out. Even in a city as corrupt as Piltover that being found out wouldn't be ignorable. He got himself stuck under Silco's thumb and now it's not just himself at risk but also his daughter. He's too much of a coward to take the personal consequences of owning up and he can't put his daughters life in danger by defying Silco so he's trapped himself.

      @@troikas3353 Correct.
      Greyson’s dynamic with Vander was one of (almost) equals.
      Marcus is in Silco’s control.
      Any attempt by Marcus to extract himself means sacrificing his daughter’s future. Piltover appears to be a rigidly stratified patrician society; Marcus has no family name, thus is on the lowest rungs. Without his position as sheriff, his daughter has no shot at much of a life. All Silco has to do is expose Marcus, and the Piltover council will ruin his life and that of his daughter. Silco doesn’t have to lift a finger to punish any disobedience from Marcus; the very Piltover society Marcus serves will do it for him. And Silco never lets him forget.
      I feel bad for Marcus; by the time he realized his mistake, it was too late. If he does the “right thing,” it’s his daughter who pays the price. Preventing his daughter from paying that price is the only honorable act left to him.

    "He thought he groomed it all out of you." This is very perceptive. Silco and Powder have an unhealthy relationship. It doesn't actually go to those creepy places but there's an element of it. He's mostly fatherly, but not quite. He needs the affection. And so does she. The complex thing about Silco is that he actually does love Powder, at least he thinks he does, but his weakness is that he doesn't know how to love without needing to control. There's always an element of usury in his relationship to Powder. That mistrust finds its way into the cracks of their relationship.

    • @robertwise2032
      @robertwise2032 11 місяців тому +4

      There is a 1:1 equivalence between those who insist on using the word “groomer” to describe Silco, and those who would side with Piltover continuing to control and dictate Zaun’s future.
      Silco was right about such people: they will never understand.

    • @izcanoli2539
      @izcanoli2539 11 місяців тому +4

      @@robertwise2032 As someone who is absolutely not a fan of Piltover and thinks Zaun should have independence from them, I can say that Silco did implement grooming tactics with Jinx. Grooming doesn't always have a sexual element and I think people get hung up on that. The definition of grooming is the practice of preparing or training someone for a particular purpose or activity. To ensure control and loyalty over Jinx Silco did initially utilize these tactics. Again, not sexually but in a way that makes the relationship feel unbalanced and unhealthy. That being said though I do believe Silco loves Jinx and she loved him, but it is in a complex and not so productive way. Doesn't mean it isn't true. I think what tim said is right on the money as is the comment about grooming tactics because from a base level their relationship had those aspects.

    • @robertwise2032
      @robertwise2032 11 місяців тому +6

      @@izcanoli2539Here’s the problem:
      “grooming” is one of many words in our time that have become what S I Hayakawa called a “snarl word.”
      A content-free verbal noise that expresses angry emotions and nothing else; in practice, amounting to “something of which one ought to disapprove.”
      These words function according to archaic mythological concepts of defilement and taboo; wrong opinions and those who hold them must be excluded from the community because all who come too close to them risk becoming accursed.
      Silco is Jinx’s father, just as surely as Vander was VI’s father.
      Families in Zaun operate differently than they do in Piltover, or in our world.
      We see very few people in Zaun of Vander’s or Silco’s age. Look carefully; there appears to be almost an entire generation missing. No one in Zaun, even post-timeskip, has guns except for Jinx. Jinx’s guns are clearly powered by a Shimmer derivative, whereas the enforcers clearly use traditional gunpowder. It’s logical to assume that gunpowder is tightly controlled, and unavailable in the undercity. Vander led a rebellion where one side had melee weapons and one had guns; I suspect that the result was a missing generation. I suspect many, if not most, families in Zaun are “secondhand” out of sheer necessity.
      There probably is what we would call “grooming” in Zaun, but I see no evidence of it in Silco’s fatherhood, nor in Vander’s. Both of them did their best to make their children strong in an environment where there was never enough to go around.
      “What makes you different makes you strong.”
      Every character in Arcane cannot escape a fundamental and unresolved fracture in their society: politically, Zaun is still technically part of Piltover. Culturally, it has not been for a long time. Piltover is literally blind to the fact that Zaun exists as its own culture. They use slurs like “trencher” to describe the inhabitants. This monumental disconnect affects every event and every character. One way or another, situations that are unsustainable will eventually not be sustained.

      @koko4620 11 місяців тому +3

      @@robertwise2032Great reply, nailed it.
      I think while the technical term for "grooming" may be as broad in description as "to manipulate", I can almost guarantee that these two reactors used the word specifically because everything in our current society MUST be icky in a sexual manner when it comes to any two characters of age difference..
      The relationship between Jinx and Silcoe is unorthodox and certainly toxic, but it's weirdness ends at father-daughter disfunction.

    Hello, we can see that the episode title "everyone wants to be my enemy" applies to several characters, Powder and her PTSD with ghosts that haunt her, Caitlin going to a place she doesn't know where her mentor was ambushed in an alley, I saw returning to a place that was once his home but is now that of his enemy, Marcus with pressure from Silco on one side and Jace on the other, Jace who now as a counselor is in the sights of the other members of the council. At the beginning we see that Caitlin crosses the line and literally frees Vi and remembers her mentor and her advice in contrast Marcus buries his officers while making a deal with Silco (remember the second episode) "a coin crosses for every crime" and "the "I'll bury everyone," Caitlin takes a risk and settles with Vi while Marcus gives up under pressure from Silco. On the other hand, Victor's condition worsens and he claims to Jave that they should help the people of the suburban district, perhaps he reaches the limit in his investigations, either physically and mentally, alienating himself from others or discovering mysteries that he should not solve, Jace on the other hand. On the other hand, he leaves aside the investigations and surrounds himself with politicians who only want more for themselves and thanks to Mel Medarda, he enters the game and literally puts it into his game, while his mentor Hermeindingger is enjoying the play with his eyes closed, it is The only one left out of these deals (non-spoiler foreshadowing), Vi finds a clue to her sister and gets an enforcer to free her to try to find her. Her Parkour demonstration leaves her freed when she reaches the bottom, breathes and looks up. At first she is quite harsh with her partner but she soon brings her up to speed when she discovers that her sister is now the darling of the district chief. We can see how several characters relate to each other, Jace and Mel as lovers, Victor and Sky only as colleagues but she wants something more, Silco defines himself as a father after baptizing his daughter Jinx, Vi and Caitlin, colleagues?

A lot of the songs in the show have been diagetic, actually being played in the world either by live musicians in the scene, a phonograph or the jukebox. They did the same thing with Ray Chen this episode, the violinist on the stage was modeled after the series classical music composer, but no one cares cause few people know who he is.
    Silco and Powder's relationship is deliberately framed as unsettling. It's toxic and abusive in the extreme and they add a lot of little elements to their interactions designed to make your skin crawl. Silco gets so much undue hate, especially with regard to Jinx. Because he's "the villain," people think that he's "grooming" her, "manipulating" her," or somehow "using" her. None of that is true. Arcane's characters are as far from one-dimensional as you get. Those who think Silco is being "creepy" with Jinx are projecting. While Jinx often acts like a child around Silco, that's part of HER character. The baptism scene is to show similarity yet a stark contrast with Silco's "baptism" by Vander.

    • @iCyberDev
      @iCyberDev 11 місяців тому +3

      It's a tough one on the grooming but maybe we can call it heavily enabling her with bad guidance too so they're feeding into her own echo chamber.
      And she has dependency issues masked as daddy issues so it feels more creepy when silco is trying to be close and nice to her but mostly because she didn't set the boundaries herself. She even sits on his lap and plays cutesy because she can't tell what is acceptable in her in her mind and often acts like a child because of it when hiding her insecurities...until they boil and then angry loud more mature powder (or jinx I guess) pops out only to escape and hide behind the baby powder (no pun intended) afterwards.
      Silco is enabling her, indoctrinating her? Sure. But because she's the one that's not drawing boundaries because of her dependency and insecurities issues, it looks like he's grooming her when you look at it from outside both their POVs

She told him the truth--that he's painting a target on his back--gave him advice on how not to get backstabbed, and asked for nothing in return. Yes, it does end up letting her stay closer to him, but that was far from a guarantee, and Jayce always had the choice to follow her advice or not. I think she legitimately saw Jayce as a good change for the council. They were corrupt whether he was there or not, but now she has someone who can help manipulate that corruption for more altruistic goals.

    • @nosneponsnek
      @nosneponsnek 11 місяців тому +6

      She told him because she hoped he would do exactly what he did - curry favor with the council to increase his own standing - while simultaneously ingratiating herself with him. She did the same thing with Councilor Hoskel; she got in his good graces and when it came time to vote for Jayce's expulsion, she used that trust to get Hoskel's vote. She straight up said it herself that Jayce was a better "investment" than expected. That's what he is to her: a tool she can use to gain better control over the council. Perhaps she actually does care for him, but her actions are still manipulative. Good intentions are besides the point - Mel is manipulative. Not necessarily selfish, but, c'mon, she didn't do all that because she _liked_ him.

      Silco created what is effectively supermeth and deliberately spread it throughout his own city to create an addiction epidemic as a means of garnering control, generating income, and he used it in lethal human experimentation on children in an effort to create disposable foot soldiers he can create and discard as needed. Cait mentions in E4 that all of Powders violent attacks prior to her assault on the square were confined in Undercity, Silco was using her to murder other Zaunites that didn't bow to him (and in Act 1 he was paying the very corrupt enforcers he's allegedly fighting against to brutalize his own people).
      Silco's rhetoric is revolutionary, he talks a big game about how much he loves his people, but his actions are a polar contrast to those sentiments. What he actually wants is control and to hurt Topside as revenge for the pain he's personally suffered. Silco is a victim of this city, and he is sympathetic for what he's suffered. But he is also one of the most vile villains in recent media.
      Powder is also the only major Zaunite we see who never gives any opinion on the Topside/Undercity situation. She doesn't think that broadly, her focus is entirely on pleasing Silco in exchange for the validation he provides. Her motivation is her toxic codependency on Silco, she doesn't actually care about Zaun from what we can tell, she just needs to be useful to Silco and will do whatever she thinks will make her valuable to him. Which includes murdering countless people for his benefit.

    Silco and Jinx's relationship gives adult with a very very young child vibes which obviously feels super mega creepy with Jinx being a young adult or close enough (she's either 17 or 18). Their relationship is not healthy, there's definitely codependency and that's part of what the creepiness is supposed to display. Being codependent as an adult to their kid is really really bad.
    As for Cait, she absolutely could have killed Sevika, with the first shot even, guns are still ridiculously powerful even against shimmered individuals, especially if there's enough distance or surprise and in this scenario Cait was perfectly positioned. But I mean that would have been very antithetical to the whole "what are you shooting for" from the start (well unless they wanted to write Cait as a cold blooded killer I suppose xD).
    Plus Cait probably doesn't even know for sure Sevika is a criminal, she just knows Vi tried to give her the slip to go beat up an older lady, and even injuries in the undercity can easily lead to death (gun shots are never healthy but gun shots in a poisoned environment without good access to healthcare is basically a death sentence) so she can't really shoot her in the arm or leg either.

    And I say “friends” because the only friend she had who was of a similar age…
    I can’t say any more

    I really like how they make strong female character like this, which every film should have done it before. Vi uses force to win, but she get beat up all the time and get back like a champ, Jinx is more fragile so she rely on other people and trap, Mel uses her wit and beauty to control those around her. It not like other shows where the girl just talking shit and beat the shit out of everyone she see no matter how illogical it is

    I'm surprised you glossed over caitlyns interaction with the patron at the brothel. Kind of a HUGE hint to her future interactions and interest in VI.

    Feels so validated to see that Im not the only one who cannot stand the constant Imagine Dragons with this show. Really, I think a lot of this soundtrack hurt this show, if Im being honest. The first season is still ABSOLUTELY a 10/10, but the nonstop reliance on "wannabe hipster radio music" to sell the emotions is so....not necessary. Because the emotion is already there. And its strong, stronger than just about any show Ive ever watched. Its like adding a laugh track to a comedy special thats already insanely funny, its just redundant.
    This applies to all of the music in this show, but Imagine Dragons specifically is just one of the one bands I genuinely cannot stand. Its soulless car commercial music.

    It's always so interesting to watch people react to Marcus in particular. People really like to throw him under the bus - and fair enough I guess - he committed some serious sins. But he also protected VI by putting her in prison without record. LOL fucked up, but any other action and Silco would've found her.
    Furthermore, after the timeskip, I see a man who's doing everything he can to make it right - he's just not equipped to do it. Nobody seems to really pick up on how much he's tried to change. He's no longer a hot head looking to punish any "trencher" who steps out of line. He WORKS with the Undercity, like his predecessor. It's just unfortunate he's in bed with the worst of the Undercity in Silco.
    He KEPT the bloody coin from all those years ago. That should tell you everything you need to know about him. A deeply flawed man, but one who recognized his mistake and is trying to do better. It just ends up being too little too late. It's very sad, if you ask me.
    Also yeah, the Imagine Dragons bit was too far for me. Practically the only piece of the entire show that I cringe at. I don't care how big of fans they are, they got to write the damn theme song. They don't need to be IN the damn show. Kind of lame, imo. The Kazoo was a great touch Chad. LMAO

    EPISODE 8 SPOILER:
    Similar to what you said about two blue haired characters with opposite demeanors, one of the reasons i love this show is how much diversity there is in general. I love the contrast for example between a hyperfeminine black woman like Mel and her masculine badass mother.

      This show just does contrasts perfectly. Vander/Vi. Vander/Silco. Grayson/Marcus. Hell, even Jayce and Viktor are Cold War opposites of each other.

    Jinx getting the hextech working off of just testing and some spare notes just shows how brilliant she is and it's super tragic
    If Powder hadn't gone through the episode 3 trauma, and somehow met up with Viktor, just think of how much they could have accomplished together 😭

    You guys should react to "Get Jinxed". Its a music video about Jinxs' character in League of Legends. It wont spoil anything about Arcane. Its just a fun music video for a very catchy song!

    real question : so people hate Imagine Dragons so much ?
    I listen to a shit ton of music genres, and in the genre they're in, I never found that they made terrible music at all. And Ennemy is a pretty decent song overall with decent lyrics.
    Why all the hate? Is this just a meme?
