OMC King Cobra Overheats After Running Engine on Trailer How-to Fix
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 жов 2017
- If your OMC King Cobra equipped boat has been started on the trailer without water and now it overheats- it might be because your impeller is burned up from dry friction. This video will teach you to replace all the parts you need to get your engine running cool again.

You do it all! I enjoyed the bonus footage and your sense of humor is welcomed. :)
No questions this time Brian but thank you for taking the time to upload. Got yourself a like from ol' Brad
Job well done. For those worried about using petroleum based lube on the rubber impeller I use liquid dish soap (glycerin) for lubrication.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles !
Mighty fine movie !
Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍
Nice vid, I have a regular Cobra and have done the impeller many times. A few tips I've picked up over the years...
On the regular Cobra the o ring that fits into the housing doesn't always want to lay flat. I will use bead of OMC triple guard grease that holds the oring in the groove. OMC gasket sealer on the threads of the bolts esp in salt water like I am. I always start it up with the cover off to make sure there are no water leaks around the housing. Lastly the best muffs I have found are the Merc ones with the rod and clamp to hold them tight. They fit well and will not get loose.
Luigi 1955 where do you find your OMC parts? They seem harder and harder to find!
nice job and great scenery
Another great video! I am a recreational marine tech. For everyone worried about grease on the impeller it's no biggie Brian didn't use alot. I use soap but that's mostly to see leaks easily and see good water flow on underwater exhaust. Bubbles!
Another great video thank you!
I've done a handfull of impeller, all requiring lower half removal. This looks like a much better design.
Great tutorial! Ty
Right on, followed your instructions, looks like my dogs have been chewing on the thing for days. The pump certainly doesn't look like a pump, but what do I know. I'd love to show you my Red beard sometime, thx for posting.
Where were the parts ordered from?
having the rwp off the engine crankshaft is a nightmare to replace after seeing this omc impeller on the lowr unit.
good info -ell done.!
Don't mind the handsome red beard.... Lol.... You're a Hoot Brian. Good video. Wish I had a boat!
Thanks, great info.
Thanks Dennis!
Tip: add a thin coat of petroleum jelly or dish soap to the propeller bowl so it doesn't start dry. It also helps to get the propeller in easier. Some are a lot harder to install and it takes a brief moment before water gets up to it. It doesn't take much to kill a propeller when it's dry.
A good thing to know.
Looks like a dream job. Nice beard btw.
Great video. I'm here in Zimbabwe and have that exact out drive on my boat. 1991 350 OMC "Daddy" King Cobra. Where did you order that water pump kit from and what was the part number if you may? Thanks.
I can listen to you all day...
Thanks- with over 1k videos you can!
@@briansmobile1...great video... I need to do this repair and this video will really help ..but. I need the parts..do you have a link for the parts.... Please ...and thank you
What were the torque specs for the 3/8 bolts going into the various housings?
Is this the same lower unit thats on a 1988 four Winns 160 freedom with the 2.3 engine? Unit says omc and side shocks say omc cobra didn’t get a good look at it but just curious if you knew
First! That red-head joke at the beginning got a good laugh out of me, coming from a fellow red-head.
"Don't be distracted by the hansom red beard ..." LOL !!!
That was a good one...but I think "Metal Grommet" was better. :-D
I used to work in a marine engine shop and when we replaced impellers we used a spray bottle of soapy water to lube the impeller.
Yea grease or some ppl use wd40 a big no no dish soap is recommended
How much time did you give the gasket seal to cure before torquing? About what ft lbs?
Alright what if the hose just pulls out you say if you need to replace it it required what parts seems to just spray water on gears below?
Where did you buy the impeller? I have a ‘91 OMC KING COBRA on my 221 Liberator, not finding a kit for anything other than ‘92-‘95
Cant wate to see more on your forklift
why the gasket maker if you are replacing the gasket as part of the kit?? is this a needed step? thank you
Where was that place in the BFATE ?
That impeller looks exactly like the 2 I helped my cousin replace for the air conditioning system on his boat (that we nearly sunk).
I have been a marine tech for 37 years and factory trained on Cobra units the hose that Brian is messing with has no purpose other than to direct water to where the customer cant see it leaking. The port is there to bleed off air so the pump will prime when put into the water. When the engine starts the pump leaks a small amount of water all the time. The first years of the cobra did not have the hose just a small weep hole in the housing. But customers panic when they ran the motor on the flusher and saw water leaking out around the cover so OMC installed a hose and dumped it in the exhaust housing where it was not seen. I never put grease on impellers only water soluble lube like soap or I now use glycerin from Walmart makes a good rubber lube and washes out with water. If the boat is used in salt water coat all bolts with OMC gasket sealing compound or Mercury Perfect seal same stuff.
Does the other end of the hose attach to anything in the lower gear housing, mine needs replacing but I dont really want to pull the lower housing?
I love the OMC water pump design. I thought petroleum products were bad for rubber products?
My impeller housing keeps melting! The metal insert housing shifts then melts. I saved the current rubber star, but the housing rotated 3/8" and melted the housing. That caused the hole for the small tube to be blocked. It ran fine for a solid 5 min, then just nope. I even popped the small hose off to ensure water was flowing, and it did, so all seemed fine. Just dont know why it would suddenly heat up to melt the housing. I can feel water in the hoses on the engine flowing the whole time.
what is the part number of the impeller kit of the OMC king cobra
I’m only seeing permatex the right stuff in red at my hardware store. Yours looks black. I’m guessing red is high temp which this application would be the opposite. Could you let me know the stuff you like for anti corrosion .
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a king cobra in person. The omc drives aren’t very common, but the king cobras are very rare
Question for the master. I have a jeep 3.7 and my catalytic converter is giving a code. Is there any way to make the code to stay off without replacing the converter? I have heard thing like putting lacquer thinner in the gas tank and a couple other things. Any suggestions?
terry Grubb Imo, just replace it. Scotty Kilmer has a video about cleaning it but it does require taking it off and soaking it.
There's the spark plug defouler technique, you can try hot cycling it like a DPF re gen cycle, but it's best to just replace it.
It is not a diesel
I have a 454 King Cobra in my 1990 Four Winds Liberator 221 and it use to run great. Recently it has been leaving me stranded. Just shuts off 10 minutes after running. I put gas manually in car and still does not start up right away. I have to wait about 15 mins then it starts to act like its going to start, and I have to keep turning the starter for a good while until it stops trying to start and does eventually keeps idle. It does this several times a day. When I pour gas in I notice it boils as it goes down in the carb. Not sure if it's a temp issue, or carb issue, or maybe spark issue from the Spitfire. Drives me crazy.
@Toob247 Toob247 Interesting. On another issue i thought it was ESA electronic shift assist causing it to shut down. Recently, i noticed my baots shifter also getting really hard to shift from forward to Reverse. It feels like linkage is jammed up. So With engine dieing i turned up idling, maybe messing up my ESA shifting. What ESA is supposed to do is make my idle almost turn off so I can shift, or it gets hard shift. So I am having tons of issues. Im in Mesa, AZ if you know anyone that can guide me or possible i can take my boat for repair and wont rape me for cash. I just want to get back on the lake know what i mean.
I changed my impeller twice now with the full kit. Now the engine overheats and the boat takes on water, but really can't see where it comes from. Any thoughts
Could be a cracked block or frost plugs or the drain petcocks are loose.
That is a good looking beard.
why don't you just put the grease inside the housing versus on the impeller blades? wouldn't that work as well or better as then you get the impeller in there with grease sliding it in?
Does this boat have a thermostat and where is it located?
The engine has its own water pump and thermostat. The pump he replaced is just for bringing sea water inside the boat
Couldn't see anything but the beard. Could you do it again without all the distraction.
That's a lot easier than on my boat. Our water pump is on the front of the crank
I don't know exactly where you live but there is a severe shortage of qualified recreational marine mechanics in MI. It is a short boating season, so if there is a break down people want it fixed NOW, damn the cost !
Off season, wood workers/cabinet makers can name their price even for simple jobs.
Never put grease on rubber! Always use silicone paste. Grease or anything petroleum based will destroy rubber parts.
Most rubber seals come with grease on them. I use a synthetic marine grade grease. I've done it for decades. I have zero complaints or issues with it.
Sad that the rare parts were shipped via Media Mail, which is why the box was so damaged. Illegal to send non media items via Media Mail
That's a lot easier than on a Merc.
I don't have a boat, thus, no outboard, but if I did I feel like I could replace the impeller after watching this.
Well, thats definitely different than a Mercruiser that I'm used to working on.
For sure, No bottom end drop.
i thought you were working on a ford king cobra lol
🙁 I don't get it. Not familiar with boats..
You didn't use a torque wrench.
I love snakes.
Snakes are the best.
Hi Brian.
Thats a shit design on that cage with the slots on the sides. Looks like it wear that impeller prematurely
I can't watch your videos any more! After half a minute or turns into pixelated green goo. Is it only me? I am using a Nexus 7 2013 tablet. Please solve it. I love your videos. Koray
