    You said overkill for streaming movies ? What is the min you really need for a good stream? I am currently running Plex on Apple TV hardwired to my Orbi router. I would like to be able to keep the computer off which is one reason I am going away from my hard drive.

    Nice Video which explains very good what this nas can / cant do. i enjoyed watching. Could you "help" me with my use case? I plan to use only three HDDs, specifically 3x 18TB HDDs. If I combine only two of them to achieve a total size of 36GB, what happens to the third 18TB HDD? Can I use this HDD for "security" purposes?
    2) In the event that one of the HDDs fails or becomes corrupted, is it possible to replace the defective HDD with a new one and have all data automatically restored and rewritten to the newly inserted HDD?
    3) Suppose I start with just two HDDs (2x 18TB), but later on I decide to add more HDDs to expand the storage. How many drives do I need to add, and is it possible to expand or configure a different RAID afterwards?
    thanks.

      Thanks for watching! The best solution in this scenario would be to put all three of the hard drives in the NAS and let it automatically configure with T-RAID. This would mean that you have 36 terabytes of usable capacity, and if any one of your drives die, the other two will automatically restructure themselves so you can still access your data until you can get another replacement drive (which you just slot in and start recovering the RAID array with).
      You can always go up one drive at a time with TRAID/SHR, so you can expand the system at a pace that your budget allows, but you will have to "re-sync" the array every time you make changes which could tie up your NAS for a couple of days with huge amounts of data. So you could start with 2 18TB drives and then go up to 3 or 4, as long as the added hard drives are also at least 18TB. Hope this helps! :)

      @@TwoGuyzTech wow, thank you so so much for your very nice answer. it was very easy to understand. i just thought about going for a DAN instead of a NAS so the DAN will be attached directly to the computer instead of having network ability. im just not sure if DAN also offers a T-RAID OPTION? and if i can expand it?

    How can i use only one disk as single disk or raid 0?

    I don't know anything about nas or raid I want to just store movies that I downloaded from the internet plus I'm looking to buy a zidoo media player that is compatible with a nas unit. Can you recommend a nas unit for a first timer like myself. Then explain to me how to use everything please and thank you

    My Terramaster works ok. Just ok. IF I enable the MediaServer, the media index function keeps all 5 of my drives constantly busy for days. Any change restarts the indexing and you can hear the drives working for another 3 days straight. Tried Plex but don't want to have to log in all the time. KODI on a Pi works but installed on the NAS would be best. The only other complaint I have is with the apps. At 70+ it takes me awhile to even understand what Docker is! :)

    Using plex app also on the Sony tv? Can’t get uncompressed audio to work

      You need to use a surround processor or receiver with lossless Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio audio support. Many TV's can only process lossy audio.

    The new unit is selling for 2x the price of the old unit. Do I really need to spend the extra money? I don't really NEED a NAS as I have no intention of sending my movies to other areas of my home.... I DO (AT least) need a 4 day hard drive dock to hook up to my Zappiti Neo as it only has 1 internal bay and I already have 24tb worth of movies. I do like the back-up/redundancy of a Nas though.. Any ideas?

      @TwoGuyzTech  Рік тому

      Thanks for watching! If you don't need the CPU power in the newer model then the one one may be appropriate. We haven't had a chance to test compatibility with Zappiti though so it would be worth checking to make sure that the version of SMB/whatever protocol they use is compatible with the Terra Master NASes. Hope this helps!

    Is there a way to hide certain directories & password protect streaming of my totally-not-pirated and totally-not-explicit files on the NAS to just one member of the household?

    • @scotttild
      @scotttild 2 місяці тому

      Not sure on this model, but with Synology you can give folders and locations passwords that only some people can access. So I do think overall these type of NAS units allow that but you have to check the softwere and unit.

    Have you ever had a video about the garbage that is PLEX? I use Plex, and it works, most of the time, but it has a lot of quirks. I have a PC with the Plex server and 12TB storage. I play the videos with an nVidia Shield connected to the TV. All runs on cabled 1Gbps. The problem is (among others) when you want to fast forward or rewind, which, depending on the format (I think), will have quirks. There are also other problems. I think it's all problems with Shield, but neither nVidia nor Plex will admit to anything, they pretend nothingxs wrong, and try to fix things in the background. Is there a better app out there? What is Plex really doing to try to fix such problems? Is Shield a disaster for Plex?

    • @TwoGuyzTech
      @TwoGuyzTech  Рік тому +3

      Thanks for watching! Plex is a tough situation. In our scenario it has always worked very well hosting from Linux/NAS operating systems like Synology DSM or Terra Master TOS. When we first setup our DIY NAS server running Windows 10 and a pretty weak CPU though it gave us a LOT more problems. We suspect it might have something to do with the overhead of running a bunch of unneeded Windows services or just a lack of optimization for low power CPUs, but that still doesn't excuse Plex completely as the client has given us weird behavior on the SHIELD in the past as well. The only other app that we've used that's really worth checking out in our opinion is Jellyfin, buy your mileage may vary as their client apps are anywhere from really good to slow and lacking features. We will probably be making a video discussing this some time in the future.
      Hope this helps!

      I have used Plex on my APPLE TV with an apple studio and Orbi router and have not had any issues. I think Apple TV is better at running Plex then the Nvidia Shield. I need to transition to a NAS though as my hard drive keeps stopping or turning off.
