    Developed a really fun game with my dogs where, after some warm up 'leave its', I will throw treats one at a time and either say 'leave it' or 'okay' and make it unpredictable, they love the anticipation of either running after the treat or holding themselves back and getting a treat from me, really good impulse control exercise too, all thanks to your guidance Zak 👊🏻

    Saw Zak give a talk at Dr. Ian Dunbar's "Barking Up the Right Tree" reactivity summit yesterday. Great talk, Zak. I enjoyed it and learned some good things about training, as well as a couple things about Zak himself. In my own opinion, (it's my opinion, it isn't based on facts or evidence, and I'm not a professional trainer, so take my opinion for what it's worth--probably not very much), leave it is one of the most important things you can teach your dog. The other really important thing (I think) to teach is "stop". I never taught this before until we took in a blind Great Dane (got her out of a shelter) and we ended up adopting her (foster failure). We taught her "STOP" which means stop and stand still and stay where you are until I come get you or until I tell you it's okay to move. We taught her this so that she could go out in the yard and be free to walk/run around but we could prevent her from dangerous things (like running into a tree). Blind dogs are amazing. The first week you have them is really tough--you have to just let them "run into things" (let them walk around and bump into things--don't let them hurt themselves) when you want to reach in a prevent the bump. If you reach in and prevent the bump, the dog will never learn to negotiate the environment. Greta learned after a couple of days where everything was (even in the yard, she knew where trees were, etc.) and they don't bump into things any longer. It was very hard (but our vet insisted we let her learn--and learn she did). No one knew she was blind (until they saw her eyes and then it was readily apparent). Yes, I'd take in another blind dog in a heartbeat (matter of fact, one of our little dogs is blind in one eye).

I even tried leaving a pile on the floor and as soon as he realizes the treats are coming from my other hand away from the treats he just stares at my other hand. He is very food motivated

    I Love All your videos a huge fan I need some tips I have a 3yr old YorkiePoo and He whines a lot he gets attention we play with him and he still whines all the time what can I do also he also potty in our place no matter how much he goes outside and that's at least every 30 mins I'm at my wits end

    • @robinrutherfordcost4748
      @robinrutherfordcost4748 3 місяці тому +1

      You have to stop giving in to the whining. Now he probably thinks he has to whine. Wait at least 3 seconds after a whine before doing anything. If your dog is whining or barking when you put the keys in the door, do not open the door until you have at least 3 seconds of quiet. Otherwise they think they just have to keep doing that and that gets the door open. Hope that helps.

    • @janhankins911
      @janhankins911 3 місяці тому +1

      Yes, you've reinforced the whining by giving him attention, play, etc. So you need to do a couple of things. First, stop reinforcing the whining. Don't give him attention, don't play with him, if you have to get up and walk out of the room But you need to combine this "extinction" with letting him know what he can do to get your attention and a play session. Pick an actual behavior (not just "don't whine"). Let's say you want him to sit or perhaps pick up a toy and bring it to you (that's how he says "I want to play" rather than whining). Teach him that behavior and that's when you reinforce him with attention, play and even treats. If you just ignore him without teaching him how to get your attention, you'll see an "extinction burst' which means the whining will increase before it decreases. You don't want that!! Plus it's really frustrating for the dog (not to mention you). So teach him "whining doesn't get you what you want---attention and play, but this other behavior will get you what you want). Now for the house training issues. Small dogs are much more difficult to house train that larger dogs (at least that's been my experience and I've asked other actual trainers and they have all agreed with me). Go back to the beginning and pretend he's a wee puppy. Keep him confined when you can't watch him. Keep him with you and learn the signs that he's got to go to the bathroom and scoop him up and take him immediately outside if you see his sign--I don't care if you're in the middle of brushing your teeth, take him outside looking like a rabid dog if you have to! Try to keep accidents to a minimum. Take him out on a schedule and take him out on a leash. Stay outside until he does his business. If he absolutely refuses, go back inside, but make sure he's tethered to you (literally if you have to) and take him back out in 5 or 10 minutes. Once he goes to the bathroom, reward with treats. You can add a cue like "hurry" or "go pee" or whatever you want. It can take a little whlle--just keep working at it. Best of luck and keep at it. This won't go away over night but it will get better if you stick with it.

      @laraybooker9465 3 місяці тому

      That's the thing he goes for walks in a leash he goes outside on a schedule and just because when he goes outside he potty every time but he still uses it it's so frustrating and like I said I'm at my wits end

      As you can see, he uses a verbal marker. No-one can tell you which suits you (and your dog) better, you'll have to make your own judgement. If you want some pros and cons to consider, I listed a few. Hope this helps.
      Clicker pros:
      Possible to mark with precise timing (i.e. reinforce EXACTLY the right behavior)
      Consistent
      Clear, fairly unique sound
      Clicker cons:
      Must carry a clicker
      Precise marking requires skill (though this is true for either tool)
      Can be too loud for dogs (some people dampen them for this reason)
      Verbal marker pros:
      Always have it with you
      Verbal marker cons:
      Can be inconsistent (i.e. "YES!!!" is different from "yes.", though you could argue that this allows for nuance - as long as it doesn't confuse the dog)
      A bit slower than clicking
      Risk accidentally using the marker in normal conversation (thus weakening it)

    But what do i do if my dog knows what to do things just partially, so that he can ignore what i say, like
    I have a test in my hands, he sits down before i say anything but jumps to eat it as my hand lowers or how he knows he shouldn't poop inside the house but still does when no one's looking, or excess eating i feed him and let him do as he pleases mostly cause i do not prefer having my pets tied up but the even if his stomach is bulging from the food he's eaten still win off to shove his face into trash and easy it and then pukes and eats it as well, he's quite a biter but that's not a problem to me the major ones id say are the hidden pooping and the excess eating

    Zak, you said this will work on any dog on the planet...I want to challenge you to my rescue dog Snoopy. She is so anxious I don't know what to do...she is not food motivated so it makes it even harder. I can't bring her to the beach or she screams at the sight of another dog...even the friendliest of the friendliest. I took here to puppy socialization classes for 6 weeks and she would not play with any of them. She won't even come to my husband and she's about to turn 2. I've had here since she was 4months old and she's never grown out of any of her fear....and I'm an animal lover and have had lots of dogs, cats, goats, chickens, etc... I have never met a dog like this and my heart breaks for her. If I can contact you, I'd love to hear how you'd handle that. My vet gave me clomicalm 20mg and it does nothing. He also recommended CBD...what do you think about meds? I hate them and would rather find a way that is natural.

    The truth, I came across a video of Zak being extremely critical of another trainer's techniques, whom I had never heard of. Having trained dogs myself in the military, I was interested, so I started watching several of the videos of the criticized training called Dog Daddy. I saw nothing to suggest that he, Dog Daddy, was abusive. In fact, I was awed by his training technique, especially handling large troubled dogs. Notwithstanding, simple training techniques that a 5th grader can orchestrate on a friendly, agreeable pet dog, you're wasting money on Zak's training methods for troubled dogs. Zak's wrath comes from envy. He is minor league at best compared to Dog Daddy.

    Hey everyone. I need some help...
    I love dogs and always dreamed of having one.
    I got this beautiful 4M old Labrador and let me tell you guys something. It’s been an absolute hell. Don’t get me wrong, I like the dog. But it’s been a real challenge.
    I never expected that owning a dog was going to be this time consuming. I can’t find time for myself even if I tried and because of that, I’m beginning to develop panic attacks…
    I feel like the worst person in the world, but I’m thinking of giving my dog away.
    If I’m being totally honest here, because of all the stress and the panic attacks, I’m beginning to dislike the dog. I truly don’t know what to do and need some guidance.
    My goal here is to give this dog the life that she deserves. So please, help me.

    I am 100% certain that this dog is NOT 90% trained. It hasn’t even hit adolescence yet, with all the associated hormonal changes that come with that developmental phase. In addition, a Cane Corso will undergo a dramatic change around the age of 18 months to 2 years old. Treats won’t help for that phase. But for the sake of entertainment, I will check back in and see if Zak is still posting training videos of this dog when it’s upwards to 2 years old….

    I dunno man....Dog Daddy said swinging a 🐕 around by his neck is a more advantageous form of training...seems to make total sense 🙄🙄

      Dog Daddy never swings a dog by it's neck (although there is 2 videos I very much disagree with of his). He works with dogs that have extreme fear and aggression issues. Dog Daddy is not training the dogs, he's helping them change their state of mind, for the better. For stuff like what Zak is doing here, it is training. Teaching the dog something.
      So to make it clear, Dog Daddy is not training, but helping the dog to achieve a different and more positive state of mind. Zak is training, which is teaching the dog something.
      You can't and shouldn't train an extremely fearful and aggressive dog, just as you should never do anything other then positive stuff when training a dog something, such as leave it. It's not fair to correct Shade for not leaving in order to teach it to him, because he has no idea what it means.
      Hope this makes sense. :)

      Would you like to make any other excuses for his behavior?

      I appreciate your concern, but I disagree. Firstly, yes Dog Daddy calls himself a trainer, which I sort of disagree with. Yes he can train, like he trained his own dogs, but the main work he does is not training. I appreciate that you are taking the time to reply to me, and I am not angry. It seems as though you are angry though. I'm not writing with big horrible capitals and daring comments. It's quite ironic, isn't it, that force free folks, like yourself, area actually the forceful ones. I mean, you can't disagree, can you. Look at your comment in compared to my comment. Furthurmore, I'm a dog behaviorist who works with very aggressive and fearful dogs. I love my job and I help lots of dogs have a better life. Please, post a video of yourself helping a very fearful and aggressive dog. I would love to see it.@@KevinWood44

      Have never heard Dog Daddy say those words. After you have gone out and worked with a dog that’s trying to bite you, you can earn the right to comment on a trainer who does. It is clear that you haven’t because you think that he is swinging the dog around by its neck.
