Seán McGirr, the newly appointed creative director of Alexander McQueen, is making a significant impact with his innovative approach and dedication to capturing the brand’s spirit. Known for his calm demeanor amid the fast-paced fashion world, McGirr pays homage to Alexander “Lee” McQueen’s early rebellious designs while infusing his own creative vision. Since his debut in March, he has integrated youthful energy and playful aggression into McQueen’s collections, balancing the house’s historical codes with modern sensibilities.
McGirr’s background includes working at Uniqlo, Dries Van Noten, and JW Anderson, cultivating a rich blend of experiences and a deep respect for craftsmanship. His journey from a Dublin suburb to leading a major fashion house is marked by resilience and a commitment to creativity. Despite facing industry pressures and cyberbullying, McGirr’s dedication to inclusivity and innovation remains steadfast.
Drawing inspiration from the artistic and cultural milieus of cities like London and Tokyo, McGirr’s designs reflect a blend of edgy style and practical wearability. He aims to restore McQueen’s legacy as a daring and experimental brand in contemporary fashion. His approach involves engaging with Lee McQueen’s ideas, emphasizing that one can “say something through clothes,” a philosophy that led him to move from Dublin to England after high school.
McGirr’s tenure at Alexander McQueen is characterized by a collaborative working style. He values giving his team space while being actively involved in the creative process. Many team members have been with the brand since Lee McQueen’s era, and together, they are excited to explore new creative directions. McGirr’s openness and flexibility foster an environment where creative ideas flourish, aligning with his vision for the brand’s future.
As McGirr continues to shape Alexander McQueen’s identity, his commitment to pushing boundaries and embracing unconventional perspectives positions the brand for a dynamic future. His leadership reflects a deep understanding of the brand’s heritage, combined with a forward-thinking approach that resonates with contemporary audiences. Through his designs, McGirr seeks to let the light into the brand, ushering in a new era of creativity and expression.

Thank you for bring up the nuance of diversity and how money separate us more than anything else.
Real. The convo around intersectionality falls so short bc ppl love posing it like a ladder system, forgetting that we are all share a common struggle of class.
As a McQueen stan since the 90's, I have to admit that I think what the brand should have done was to pulled McQueen for a few seasons and reissued it with a designer that could better translate McQueen's image with modernity. Sean McGirr is brilliant but the collections aren't McQueen.
On the contrary, I think his offering, his ‘fashioning’ translates rather well McQueen’s legaycy into the more commercially-driven and thus dreary and stiff landscape of today’s fagshion.
His "design" were INSPIRED by DevilnightUK, Killstar and other goth brand and mix it with JW anderson bc he used to work there 🙄
very juvenile, he's stuck in a student mode. Seems like he still values his time at CSM as his highest achievement so far.
