Yay, my comment got a response. Best day. I definitely appreciate that the nuanced version is hard to do catchy. I also think part of the problem is the communications around this, where people are seeing Anish Kapoor marketed by himself and others as "the one guy who can do this" and so of course that's the impression that's created and people are going to get angry. I'd kind of put it on Kapoor to explain that his license is to obtain this specific material (which still is being manufactured in pretty limited quantity it seems) rather than being the one true owner of the new blackest black. But then again, maybe he'd prefer to claim more than he's got and enjoys getting his name out there via the controversy.
I just want a Vantablack cloak. that's not too much to ask. I want to stand on a busy corner wrapped in it, just being creepy.
While yes, it would have a greater effect if you have a normal cloak with ventablack on the inside, ventablack mask and gloves and so forth. Then the effect is more subtle at first, then surprising, potentially shocking when you stare into a cloak and see the void beneath.

The various PBS channels are a great place to start I think...
If one is feeling a bit adventurous maybe poke around the various Discovery Channel properties..? Maybe..?
Something that's _quite_ different from Mike's Idea Channel but also imho quite enlightening often is Dagogo Altraide's Coldfusion TV...

I have gone my whole life without Vanta black. How quickly am I entitled to easy access to this stuff. Although our patent system has its flaws, it's not a forever thing (and not nearly so bad as the copyright laws). And the license may not even exist as long as the patent. Patents are our way of making sure people have the incentives to invest time and money into developing things like this...and when they do they may make it available on a more limited basis than we'd like (in fact, it's assumed that they will restrict availability more than the public would like). If this were a life-saving medicine, then there would be a complicated ethical issue, but this is just "Wow, that's really black. Neat."
The guy with the vanta black license: What if you bought one of his artworks, dismantled it, then used the parts to make a new work, titled 'vanta black'?

It's not about whether it's a color or a material/process for me, it's intellectual property law itself that I have a problem with. I do not think anyone should be able to patent anything ever, because that is a capitalistic process. Communism or bust.

The issue of news organizations and UA-cam creators misrepresenting or oversimplifying a title in order to get more people to click and read/'watch is an important one, as it can seriously alter the audience's perception of the actual content. But that's news content for you when clickbait has become an 'acceptable risk': you sacrifice accuracy and nuance in order to get more eyeballs on your article or video.

It's the color scheme that freaks me out. Every time you try to operate one of these weird black controls which are labeled in black on a black background, a small black light lights up black to let you know you've done it!

It's not "missing nuance", and yeah it isn't very "snappy". Literally the whole thing is about the material not the color, trying to frame it otherwise is misguided (at best) and click-baity. Blaming surrey is no excuse, especially when you jump on board in the same way.
Imperator I mean everybody keeps saying it's possible to make this color through other methods but we don't actually know if that's true or not, carbon nano tubes are pretty unique in quality
