Excellent info. My conclusions between the types of jacket exactly. Try different combinations of layers and you'll find your comfort level. If its not too cold say above 50°f, Dont worry about getting sweaty. Sweating is good for you and you can bring a few body wipes and everything is dandy🤙

Hi, nice comparison. I have just one question and I could´t found an answer anywhere on the web so I am asking here.
I did some multiday trekking in these cold, rainy, windy places like Norway or Ireland and always used as outer layer softshell jacket. It can withstand wind pretty nicely and little bit of rain as well, when it got to the heavy rain I just put rain poncho on.
Now I am thinking about getting a new jacket so I am looking into the hardshells because every bit of information out there tells me this stuff is made for exactly this kind of environment. But at the same time I feel based on these informations like hardshell is just raincoat with extra steps and 10 times the price if I say it bluntly. Next thing is that even tho it is nice idea of being safe and dry in this magical jacket in practice you have bottom half still completely exposed, so in heavier rain a man would get soaked even thru the underwear so I would get a raincoat on anyway.
So my question is what is the benefit of hardshell/waterproof jacket which is probably worn over a fleece or softshell anyway, over softshell and reincoat if needed? Or in another words, hardshell doesn´t save any space because you still need extra insulation and doesn´t solve rain completely either, but is less breathable so whats the point?
Thank you for the answer in advance. :)

You made a great point! Yeah! Hard shells are made for precisely this kind of environment. Hard shells are actually waterproof jackets with a hood. The fabric technology is unique, lightweight, and durable. The proprietary technology makes these jackets more expensive. These rigid and stiff jackets are designed to protect you from whipping winds and heavy precipitation. These jackets have a 3-layer build: a waterproof and breathable membrane is sandwiched between an interior liner and durable exterior face fabric. The most common membrane type is Gore-Tex. And Gore-Tex is a waterproof and breathable fabric membrane that microporous properties that repel water from the outside but let it breathe on the inside to avoid condensation and improve breathability. This is another reason hard shells are expensive. But nonetheless, it's an excellent investment if you are a frequent traveler who faces heavy rain, snow, or strong wind.

Totally agree mate. Nowadays there are just so many options out there that it gets only more complicated than it really is.
