Don't go to college unless you're planning on doing something that requires it, and makes it worth it. The days of "finding yourself" in college are long gone. It's way too expensive.
one caveat: you can "find yourself" in community college as it's incredibly cheap, and community colleges have a wider variety of pathways, such as associate's degree, transferring to a four year, or getting a certificate for a trade, compared to the traditional 4 year university.
As someone who is currently in college, I agree with this 100%. College is only necessary if the specific career you want requires it, otherwise steer clear and try a vocational school, self-learning, or some other avenue.
Most companies now require it and will reject applicants from other avenues. HR recruiting is big on worth on paper, not what you can actually do with it. Trades and apprenticeships are the only other way other than starting your own business from scratch.

@GFG his main economic center point is UBI, giving every American 18 years or older $1,000 bucks a month. I’m a little skeptical about it but based on his numbers it shouldn’t cause too much inflation. He also uses a value added tax system (used in most countries), which will tax larger companies who are currently excluded through loopholes, and puts that money back into the people’s hands with UBI. That’s pretty much all I know, but I would prefer that over trumps, which is just reduce restrictions and let the corps run wild. I'll even go one better with the eternal creep of automation, how many people even considered if the degree they're chasing with be a profession in 5, 10, or even 20 yesrs from now? A person's life including the choices they've made or will make is there responsibility and there's alone. At some point they have to accept ownership of there decisions. No one put a gun to there heads and forced them to go to college, college is something you do on your own volition.
Very refreshing to hear someone say it’s not all about college. Being a gas fitter/plumber I feel looked down on by people who have went to uni because I left school at 16, never went to university and work a dirty job but in reality I have zero debt and earn a wage similar or more than what a lawyer earns. Plus it’s great that I can’t be replaced by automation and have plenty other opportunities to make money should I choose to work abroad or offshore. I know a lot of people I went to school with who went to university, got a degree and are still working just above minimum wage job because there’s no work in their field.
I was pushed to go to college because of test scores. I was even discouraged from taking shop classes even though I wanted to. I got an art scholarship but still had to pay. After school the most lucrative avenue was antique dealing because of my fine art knowledge, but skills like woodworking and upholstery would have revolutionized my business. The USA has a horrible education system and guidance counselor’s are often out of touch with reality.

@Noah Minteer UBI isn't the answer but it is the foundation to build things on top of that. It provides economic freedom and security that allows teen moms to not be poor. As someone who studied computer science and statistics, here is the fundamental problem with your statement "we already pay for teen moms to get food stamps for their 4 kids and they're still poor." Let me ask you this, who gets food stamp from government welfare? poor people. As a result, if you just look at current food stamps recipients, of course they are going to be poor BY DEFINITION. If a teenage mom who do get food stamps and became not poor, well she wouldn't be receiving food stamps which would be completely missed by your statistics. Second, because only poor people receives food stamps, they have an incentives to stay poor. If you become not poor, then you lose the food stamps benefit. Whereas if you say, hey I'm giving you $1000 no matter what, they are free to move up the social ladder. As Scott Santens beautifully put "Welfare is paying someone to do nothing while UBI is paying someone to do anything." Lastly, UBI isn't going to be funded by income tax. It is going to be funded by a VAT on automation and luxury goods. So unless spend a lot on luxurious items or is an investor in tech, this really has no impact on you. You can check the breakouts at freedom-dividend.com/ Hope this helps!
As a progressive, sales leaderships and technology double major, I 100% see the value in your education and want to pay a little more in taxes for you to go to college tuition free so when you graduate you can start a small business, invest in yourself, buy a house or property, and give back to your community.
@@CarpeDonnelly I agree in your statement on investing more in education. I disagree with your view thinking that college education solves most of the problems. You have to realize that 42% of college graduates get a job that is not related to their major. In fact, many college graduates do not start businesses or invest because they are stuck in College learning about things they won't want. Yang wants vocational training and apprenticeships. I think having these plans gives people more opportunities to start businesses or invest. We definitely need more educated people but your statement on college degree leading to investing and businesses is wrong. At least, it isn't the most effective way of achieving this.
CarpeDonnelly college currently is a waste of money. It’s overbloaded and will not be solved with money. College currently is strictly for accreditation and not learning. It shouldn’t cost 60k a year to tell students which chapters to read in which textbooks. Professors that work 3 hours a week earn $200k a year, colleges spend millions on needless property such as new football fields and extravagant library’s for which their books will never be touched. College shouldn’t be free, it just shouldn’t cost the ridiculous amounts that it currently does.
Yep. Because the college pipeline is a lucrative business. And vocations aren't promoted as much because it doesn't require one to assume massive debt for education. They're also seen as low-income, undesirable jobs, which is retarded. My teacher has a friend whose works in the septic industry and makes 100K+ a year. However that's because he works in a management position, but before then he was making 75,000 a year starting off.
I'm interested however in the ways that automation effect those vocations. There are a lot of industries that have a high likelihood of being replaced in the next 20 years, so I wonder how many people add that into their decision making process.
It’s interesting, I’m not a huge fan of UBI, and Yang was so heavily associated with UBI that I didn’t give him much attention during the primary. I actually find myself agreeing with him a ton and I regret that I never got past that one policy proposal, I also wish the media had focused less on the UBI and spoke to some of his other thoughts and ideas
exactly, the dems fucked him over more than the republicans did, and media didn't allow him to talk about his wider policies so he just became known as the "UBI candidate". If he'd been given the same press coverage and debate speaking time that Biden got, I bet he would be the nominee now
Yeah I watched his democratic debates and was a bit upset about how much he was pushing UBI because he didn't have a lot of time to begin with. I wish he had talked about his other policies too WITH UBI at the tail end so ppl can give him a chance without hearing UBI and turning away. I'm a die-hard Bernie supporters but even I can admit he's out of touch with the demands of the current economy and Yang is more intuned with that
Here in Germany 59% are on vocational training, yes, but Colleges and Universities are free too nevertheless. so, you can have both: a majority of the young in vocational training AND free colleges. In fact there is this parallel system that is very effective: doing vocationai training and college education side by side at the same time. My son is doing that: having training at Mercedes Benz plant and in coordination writing his Masters Thesis at the University of Stuttgart.
rjd53 a person who goes two year trade/tech school for say industrial maintenance will find a job quicker, that pays better, and that’s more sustainable for the future of tech and industrial growth than someone who spends 4-8 years in a university learning philosophy or gender studies. Even if all college was free, people who go to universities generally have a harder time finding a job than someone straight outta trade school.
Yeah it's nice, but the reason they can do it is the government enforces harsh entry requirements and eliminates underperforming degrees. If you want Uni to be free in the US, 80% of humanities courses would have to go.
@@Lordloss646 The thing is, we are told from birth that college is the only way to survive. It isn't simply peer pressure. We get it from every side. I am seriously considering trade school. This from a person with a BS Business admin degree, along with a load of tech degrees. It is hard to break into positions that pay enough to survive.
Most Germans who have children do not pay any income taxes at all, because you have to earn a certain minimal amount of money to pay taxes, and the majority with children doesn't earn that much. We financed our summer vacation every year with the income tax refund. Health insurance, old age pension, unemployment insurence and nursing home insurence etc. are not financed by taxes, you have to pay for them extra, but they are deductable in part from your income. Words of my father "learn a trade, and develop a skill, so if shit hits the fan, you will always be needed" he was right. Automotive is not going away anytime soon.
The automotive industry isn't. But the necessity for mechanics as we know it definitely will be. Electric cars don't require the maintenance that gas/diesel do, and today's mechanics will have to learn how to work on electric cars, which will be a whole different ball game.
Electric cars still require maintenance tho. Break pads, coolant systems that cool the batteries. There could be shorting on the stator windings on the motor, suspension systems, etc. Mechanics will evolve with electric vehicles. Maybe in 30 years it'll be different..but no mechanics will still be needed for awhile.
I thought that Yang was all for free college but he does actually understand how that will never work. I don't agree with bailing out people from their own bad decisions. That's how you create unaccountable people who are not suitable for high demand employment. It's also unfair to those who didn't go to college and are now paying into a system that benefits those who made bad decisions.
You are letting pride potentially lower social welfare. Unless it is proven that helping with student debt generates unresponsbility, then it better for the economy that we handle it. Remember, it isn't necessary a bad decision to go to college, sometimes a forced decision. Every fucking company, for example in consulting requires a degree.
@Pawwel Mussial The working poor in America DIDNT go to college. You want to bail out the middle/ lower middle class for taking out college loans and not help this who didn't go to college and just worked hard physical labor for less wages than the entitled college kids who got art and music degrees for $100,000 and expected to make tons of money.
@Pawwel Mussial I don't believe college is good for the vast majority of people. Yes for science, medical, computer fields but I don't believe making it free and having everyone go is a good thing, no. We need more trades, more real world experience and less hand holding cushy liberal art degrees where people go to college for some bs study and expect to find a job after when it's not even in demand. The only way I would agree with canceling student debt is if you paid everyone the same amount regardless of if they even went to college or if they were responsible and paid their debt off. One group shouldn't get a giant handout for making bad decisions while everyone else gets nothing.
@Pawwel Mussial In America we are 30 trillion dollars in debt and the economy Is about to collapse via controlled demolition by the global corporations. It's too late to offer common sense solutions, the Democrats and Republicans are both owned by the 1% and War + Global economic depression is next on the agenda not bettering the education system. Yeah there’s a kid at my high school that’s been a barber for years, and he makes more than his parents right now, and he’s doing very well for himself!
Cost for college outside of instate can be 40-50k a year. This is not including food books rent health insurance transportation and other misc necessities. Idk how you make that as a barber (AFTER TAXES). Yeah my dad did the same in the 70s, but school was wayyyyy cheaper then. Back then you could work over the summer and pay for school. So it’s great you accomplished that, but don’t bring that boomer talk here.
As someone who racked up school loan debt. I will say you don't have to go out of state. And if you want to go out of state. Live there a year and get the instate rate instead. If 1 year is worth 80k more in debt over 4 years (if you actually finish in 4 years) that just says more about your decision making. While I understand people wanting to be lawyers and doctors, there is a lot of student loan debt that exists because they weren't educated about their choices. I am a prime example, I racked up 32k in student loan debt just because I saw going to college as a way to get away from my family and my town. I wish this video had existed back in 2006. It would have literally changed my life.
Only 6% in vocational training in the US, 59% in Germany, *and we have FREE COLLEGES here in Germany!* I think people here are much more inclined not to go to college because healthcare is free, there is a safety net for everybody, there are jobs vacant everywhere, and the school system is geared more towards it.
Well, we have seen a sharp increase in university attendees here in Germany as well, and also a decrease in the value a-levels used to have. Right now about 50% of all school kids graduate with a-levels and we are closing in on 40% attending university. The trades and crafts are already desperately searching for apprentices, as evidenced in a vast increase in salary, sometimes reaching more than 1k € a month in the second or third year already. In a lot of academic professions you will need a PhD today to stand out. And I know guys who graduated with magna cum laude masters degree and still having trouble finding a decent job. In the US the problem is that most people fail to realise what a good manual labor job can offer. Those can pay a lot, especially if you strive to expand your knowledge. Basic welding will pay well, but once you get the hang of complex welding (copper, titanium etc.) your salary and career prospects will skyrocket.
I may move to Germany to go back to school. I lived in Hamburg and Berlin at art residencies for a year. My German is only at A3 I need to get better. I took classes at the international Psychoanalytic institute of Berlin but they taught in English. The USA has completely insane tuition prices it is pretty hopeless here. For some reason US citizens don’t understand that an educated debt free population is a good thing.
Mister TracK Germany healthcare is not free. It is subsidized on sliding scale per income. there are “sick funds“ not for profit insurance companies that compete which help bring prices down. @@DivadNoodeldehm-lz2gm "Unfortunately the American tax sucker covers the national defense expenditures for Europe so they can spend it on luxuries like free college." No. This is just wrong. If the US vanished tomorrow Europe would be JUST FINE. Europe's only real threat is Russia and EU defence spending utterly dwarfs that of Russia. It is not even close. Besides, before the recent defence increases the US was spending about 3.5% of GDP on war. The UK, France and Germany (and others) spend around 2%. If it was needed (and it isn't) European states could increase their military budgets without substantial difficulty. Likewise the US could spend less and it wouldn't make any strategic difference. This is just a lie Americans tell themselves to avoid spending money on desperately needed social programmes.
First off, Mr. Yang is definitely not wrong in any way shape or form. He did leave off one critical point though. A lot of companies require a college degree to even interview someone for a position. I recall telling one of my close friends who was an amazing network engineer, self taught almost, who had several high level certifications that he should still go get a degree. For the simple fact that it would limit him downstream for any higher up positions. So he bit the bullet and got an online degree. Now he can check that box and based on his work history and knowledge the skies the limit. I myself spent years trying to hire a contractor who worked for my company into a direct hire position (which is secure and has all kinds of benefits), but since she didn't have a degree she never got through the HR process where she could be considered. She was a rock star but it was impossible. Taking my own advice I went ahead and got a graduate degree almost 15 years after completing my undergrad based on the industry I work in not being kind to folks moving into senior management who do not hold grad degrees. Thankfully that investment paid off, still though, it shouldn't have been something I had to do as it didn't necessarily make me a better manager than I already was. I had to check the box though in order to move ahead, such is the world we live in. So in summation, we need to hit this issue from both sides of the coin, college is not the end all be all and it shouldn't be the all or nothing criteria from even interviewing someone either.

As someone who lives in a country with completely "free" education, it does work, it just needs to be accepted by the public that not everyone is meant for higher education. Entrance exams are a good functional way to filter the suitable people. And sure, it's not free, it's paid by taxpayers. But when the government runs the schools and sets up funding for them, the admin costs drop to a fraction of what they are at private for-profit schools. Michael Vick's Dog no, people are inherently greedy. They already get government compensation and abuse it. They make new programs or build things no one wants to justify to get more money all the time already
@Betternet how do you solve this problem at a governmental level? Colleges will never do it themselves. Also, it's good to subsidize college regardless because no matter what kids learn valuable, more specific skills in college. People aren't getting jobs because shitty companies expect people to have years of experience on top of a degree for entry-level positions. Any college graduate can tell you that that's the reason. It's not that they went to college for no reason, it's that companies are fucking them over by still expecting them to have years of experience on top of the degree, and they do this on purpose so they can claim they 'can't find qualified workers' to give an excuse to hire overseas at much lower cost. Don't go to college unless you're planning on doing something that requires it, and makes it worth it. The days of "finding yourself" in college are long gone. It's way too expensive.
one caveat: you can "find yourself" in community college as it's incredibly cheap, and community colleges have a wider variety of pathways, such as associate's degree, transferring to a four year, or getting a certificate for a trade, compared to the traditional 4 year university.
h i good point. But if you do decide to go to a four year, make sure it's worth it.

He also uses a value added tax system (used in most countries), which will tax larger companies who are currently excluded through loopholes, and puts that money back into the people’s hands with UBI.

If students can't get government loans to a college, they wouldn't go to said college. So, obviously, the college would lower their costs to retain those students and get that tuition money. I know schools get lots of endowments and donations, but:
Public non-profit schools: 20% of their revenue is from tuition
Private non-profit: 39% is from tuition
Private for-profit: over 90%!!
So, clearly, if the government were to not allow student loans for a school, that school would surely comply and lower their costs to get that money. They need students to come.

@Noah Minteer
UBI isn't the answer but it is the foundation to build things on top of that.
As Scott Santens beautifully put "Welfare is paying someone to do nothing while UBI is paying someone to do anything."
Lastly, UBI isn't going to be funded by income tax. It is going to be funded by a VAT on automation and luxury goods. So unless spend a lot on luxurious items or is an investor in tech, this really has no impact on you. You can check the breakouts at freedom-dividend.com/
Hope this helps!

Did he say that only 6% of US highschool grades go into a vocation? That's crazy low.

Here in Germany 59% are on vocational training, yes, but Colleges and Universities are free too nevertheless. so, you can have both: a majority of the young in vocational training AND free colleges. My son is doing that: having training at Mercedes Benz plant and in coordination writing his Masters Thesis at the University of Stuttgart.

The only way I would agree with canceling student debt is if you paid everyone the same amount regardless of if they even went to college or if they were responsible and paid their debt off. One group shouldn't get a giant handout for making bad decisions while everyone else gets nothing.

I’m a barber and I got a job while I was still in school, have no school debt and love my job. I highly recommend it.
Evan Torres : Good on ya 👍
Congrats! You’re living the American dream!!

There is no free healthcare on the planet
Mister TracK Germany healthcare is not free. It is subsidized on sliding scale per income. there are “sick funds“ not for profit insurance companies that compete which help bring prices down.
So it is not free in Germany it is subsidized. It is a better system than the ACA and even Medicare4all but a little more complex than medicare4all.

@@DivadNoodeldehm-lz2gm "Unfortunately the American tax sucker covers the national defense expenditures for Europe so they can spend it on luxuries like free college."
No.

One of the reasons for the giant raise in college tuition is because the feds are guaranteeing the loan amounts so the school says to themselves, why charge 10k when we can charge 20k? The feds are the main reason for tuitions soaring
J O Apparently it’s also easier to claim one cause rather than multiple.
Bingo. This is the part most people completely miss. The feds have guaranteed these loans for people who have no business being there, raising the price exponentially and reducing the value of that degree. His point about trade schools is the real one. That's where we need to go
Jeffrey Sanborn absolutely right on the trade schools. Automation may shrink some of those opportunities but not for a while I think...

I'm a high school history teacher with a master's (and the debt to go with that) and it is true that not everyone is a fit for college. I have a class on college prep and I also emphasize trade and the military because kids need prep for that too. Even that is a struggle for some kids to comprehend. I myself I was not ready for the ASVAB 33 years ago at 17 and as a result, I got a low scoring job in the army (Field Artillery cannoncocker). It took me a few years to actually be mature enough to handle college and I even enjoyed it. I'd love to pursue a PhD but will have to put that on hold as I am helping put my sons through college because I will not have them in debt. I'd rather be the one going with less.
My country is also usually ranked at top 10 countries by education around the world, so the quality is still there.

Exactly. Free college is just rewarding universities fucking everyone for so long. And it'll only serve to make them more bloated and inefficient, probably with heaps more tuition raises
Actually yes, yes it does. It doesn't mean the gov'mt picks up any tab universities can imagine, it means governments give money to universities per student enrolled. Universities therefore have to be much more financially responsible, not less.
Yes it can, if clear spending regulations are set, much like with Canada and drug prices, university cost will come down.

If you solve these things you get a drastic reduction in prices, no need for subsidized college
Only someone who can't see the big picture would assume that continuing to keep impoverished Americans from higher education is the answer here.
