I remember you covering (well hope it was you or this comment is a bit daft) the Bruntingthorpe car magazine shoot outs back in the early noughties with the ambulance and the skyline chase car, so pleased to see how well your doing,👍shows hard work, skill and effort payoff, great interview
Listening to an experienced safety professional who understands the flexibility needed to maintain appropriate standards through managing people without limiting on the delivery is incredible. I'm a health & safety guy myself who also enjoys cars and works in the blue-light sector. Understanding who you can rely on and managing those who's desire outpaces their ability really is a learned skill, even tho no one ever sets out to injure themselves or others. It's been great to watch this and get some validation for the lessons I've learnt and to understand what I should be doing to improve. Respect to you both and thank you for opening this craft up to a wider audience in an accessible format!
Probably one of THE BEST podcasts I have watched this year. Intelligent, well thought out (and non-sensational type) questions. And fantastic responses. Learned a lot about why safety is important, and is never fixed in stone.
Ben, best one yet. The comments about UA-camrs and risk was a really good point. Also, the Hammond / Flintoff topic could it be the levels of control and prep in the Hammond incident, compared to what happened to Feddie. If you understand what went wrong and can demonstrate all reasonable controls were in place then you take the learning and move on. If you can’t show that you run the risk of being benched.
Cool subject. But somehow the questions were longer than the answers themselves. And that wasn't because the guy didn't wanna talk. The interviewer should work on creating a space for the interviewee to fill in rather than direct him word for word to what he envisioned as a result. Too bad, there was a lot there instead I got bored very quickly with safe general talking about stuff that involved safety.
Wow Ben. I am one of the silent viewer who enjoys what i watch but never commets. But. Today i feel compelled to say thank you for this amazing pod cast you do. Todays for me was so addictive, yes the subject matter was very much something I enjoy, but the delivery and the realisation of what you and other tubers do was great to see. Please do act upon what you learnt from meeting with him today and the other week so you and the other who i enjoy watching do stay safe and continue to entertain us. I like i a sure many others live my life though what you are doing. As I will never be able to get any way close to do what you all are doing so get the thrill and exciting experience from watching you all. Thanks once again for a fantastic podcast and looking forward to seeing more. Really enjoyed the longer time as well. Not trying to squeeze it into an hour, ment for a more relaxed and better interview i feel.
HI David, Thanks for taking the time to write this! Comments like this really do fill creators full of fuel and make us release that there is actually nice genuine people in the world. Thank you! :)
As someone who has worked on set for TG (construction), who is Night Site Manager for a variety of huge events (Glastonbury, OLB, UEFA, G7, BST etc), and someone who has to plan for and respond to all manner of critical situations to keep people safe whilst protecting the live show...oh and who also has severve ADHD, I completely relate to everything said here and its brilliant to see a great public response in the comments - we are usually the unknown and discreet resource that enables some of the biggest events and shows to happen! Great work on this, love it!
@thecarfilmingsafetyguy Andy what an insightful and interesting listen this really was...You're an absolute pleasure to listen too with all your experiences and stories...👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Andy Harriss is a legend! "We were running towards the truck before it rolled because I heard it, and I knew it was going to roll". I think this is the first 1:17 youtube video that I've watched from start to finish. Great questions, great guest and fascinating topics.
For the first episode of your podcast to have watched this was an AWESOME guest - you know what this guy does to make all of those stunts work can’t really be understated - I think it’s his presence that gave them the balls to do half of those stunts on Top Gear- no one talks about that
I want a UA-cam car show too, my only condition is this: Bring Chris Harris. Super good point there that a lot of upstart youtubers and normal ppl tiktok'ing don't think about, when you work on or drive cars, etc, it's you, under you own volition, at your own risk, without camera's. You can be excused an accident or two so long as you kept speeds & driving style to an "appropriate moderation". When you post it online, it doesn't matter if you quickly type "don't do this btw 🤣😂😂🤣🤣😍😍🤩" with a bunch of emoji's as if that's gonna legally cover you. In fact that doesn't even come close to getting you off the hook. And when someone else tries it and unsubscribes themselves from life (which you must assume will happen)... At the very least there's the media (whom we love.. not so much lol) taking things out of proportion so public opinion... I mean.. your channel is gonna tank. It might even tank other channels too, or UA-cam as a whole (through nothing less than acts by entire governments). And you could still be personally & legally, proverbially f0rnicated, both economically and have personal freedom legally taken from you. Grand Tour & Top Gear, those guys are covered, they have tiptop legal counsel, h&s crews, advisors, risk assessement etc all documented and signed for in every which way. You... not so much, you don't have the economical margin for even half of it. Like you say, it's gonna be a matter of time..
I didn't know this podcast existed before this episode. Your guest and once settled in, your interview style is unique and insightful. I'll be watching more of your content. Thank you for the upload and I hope your maths improve!
Excellent discussion, so interesting and insightful. Thank you, Andy and Ben, brilliant talk gents. And Ben, cheers for all your incredible work over the years making the insane somewhat plausible! Or at least a lot safer.
Love the humanity of the host. There are podcasts on youtube (ekhem, diaries of a CEO where the host is a self-imagined star) - where the hosts press the interviewees into painful, unpleasant topics and subjects (watch the Diaries of a CEO interviewing Google's Mo Gowdat - unpleasant and well... unwatchable, sorry for the recommendation) - and there would be SO MUCH opportunity to do this here - just for the sake of clicks and pure provoked emotions (which, in the mind of the CEO himself, bring more, more youtube minutes and seconds watched) - but nah, this guy keeps it on the straight and narrow, without disrespecting the person he interviews and without trying to - well, ultimately, rape the interviewee's soul - for his own benefit. For which he has my respect. Well done - keep up the good work - from Latvia.
The interviewer is really good, right from the beginning asking for a summary helps the audience and the questions are very interesting. Good work man Ps splitting the screen also 👌🏻
Great show, off to obtain a copy of Gran Turismo now to see the results of Andy's work 🙂 And in no way have i achieved the levels of success, or excellence Andy has, but i second the idea that if you follow a personal goal to do as much of what you love more than anything else it will bring you imense satisfaction. I am just a little older than Andy and simimlarly have to pinch myself that i've been able to do the things i have for the last decade or thereabout, and have some of the cool stuff i've got and had along the way, the E46 M3, and now the M240i 🙂 Follow your passion and you won't go wrong, and you'll know you tried. And remember, most humans for all of human history have never had it so good, especially if you're one of the people with the time and tools to watch this!!
I reckon this and the Colin Furze one have been the best yet . Totally both ends if the spectrum, both equally informative , intriguing , fascinating and funny in their own right . Brilliant stuff , keep it up ...... AND BUY A DECENT FKN HELMET !!!!
As a person with ADHD and dyslexia I fully understand his method of thinking and to me it is normal. I thought everybody were the same and it came as a shock when I found out most people don't.
Looking back on the things them three did sometimes its beggars belief the show was never shut down due to the crazy stuff they were allowed to attempt and the accident's that have happened. Near enough every episode would have some reckless stunt. We all agree on one thing though, it made for great television.
I've been running crazy live events for over 30 years, and yes - I need H&S people on all my gigs. You learn pretty quickly which safety officers are following every rule in the book and making everyone's lives a misery, and those other folk who are flexible, understand what you're trying to do, and find a way to make it happen - whilst maintaining safety. The result is that those folks get employed A LOT - and the others are whining from the sidelines!
Post Clarkson Top Gear was destined for a disaster. Flintoff and the others getting towed behind a car, surfing on a metal plate at 70 mph was reckless.
35:30 Yes its the small things that really go wrong. The things we don't think need that much safety. A buddy can hurt himself more easily jumping a small 1 foot jump on a bicycle than a professional racing driver doing a 50 foot jump in a rally car. Because the latter will be FILLED with safety steps and the first one won't have any safety at all. I can see that apply to movies as well, especially if some of the stunts in the movie are MASSIVE, then one might overlook how dangerous a simple small stunt could be.
Short answer to the question. They cancelled TG after the Flintoff crash, and not Richards, because the show had become expendable. With Hammond, May and Jezza the show was the jewel in what was left of the BBC crown so needed to keep going.
33:50 I would say ALWAYS wear a motorsports helmet. Even doing like alpine course slalom down the black slope, and when cycling. Heck some of them have speakers and bluetooth so you can have an audiobook or music on. Those alpine helmets and bicycle helmets aren't worth crap compared to a real helmet. I've worn a real snowmobile helmet on Stiga sledges since 12 years old.
Used to be in the Fire Service with “clunk”. He has the world’s thinnest ankles ! 😉 You were alright Andy, a bit of a self publicist, all about the money, but fair play, at least you have made something of yourself.👍🏻
There is a famous story told by Matt Damon about Tom Cruise firing the safety guy who told him he couldn’t swing from side of building in one of Mission Impossible movies so he could be replaced by a different safety guy….is this one of the guys involved in that story?
There was a Top Gear Safety Coordinator? Who would have guessed? Well not Richard Hammond or Freddie Flintoff. In each case the Beeb should have been prosecuted.
One thing which Harriss is wrong is the cancel culture. He paints it like a strong all powerfull force, I would argue it is weak. Only barking, no biting. Those keyboard warriors are only as strong as companies and we make them. When they cry, just don't listen. Nothing would happen if you would just not cancel something. But with starting to actually cancel stuff with gave them a endorphine rush of power, made them addicted to they point it doesnt matter anymore what it is about as long as they can feel superiour. There might be a reason it is also called cancer culture. We need to hold companies acountable, but it always has to be reasonable and not for our own ego.
Remember that as a UA-camr you are absolutely REGULATED by the Health & Safety at work Act 1974 and the Management Regs. Please don’t think that these things don’t apply to you!
Unfortunately, the questions were way too strongly structured, with the question taking up a longer period than the answer. I got bored after a few minutes of the host trying to construct a question that could be summarized with "I saw your car have ADHD AF on its plate a long time ago, is that related to what U do as a security expert", while that question took 2-3 minutes to ask for the host. For a smaller podcast like this, if u get an interesting guy on, it is best to have concise open-ended questions and just try to allow them to speak as much as possbile, while only lightly steering the ship.
@Roadtosuccessofficialpodcast,, blimey thats quite a title you given yourself, i get you need adverts to bring in revenue but do you think you could leave them to the end or possibly the very beginning of the video and not half way through as it completely ruins the flow of the video. I dont know if you're responsible for that decision or utube, but could you sort it out ? Apart from that, you produced a quality video looking very slick and professional.
Hi Paul, the best way is to purchase a subscription to UA-cam premium. Or see if it comes free with a tech bundle at home. The episodes are also on Spotify & Apple! We have to get paid or they can’t be made!
@RoadToSuccessOfficialPodcast I would never buy utube premium as utube isn't a premium service and likes to heavily censor comment regardless of wether they are offensive to anyone , which is the free option you talk about?. Thanks for the information 👍. .oh I see your on about getting a tech bundle from a provider, I haven't got that I have only got 02.
Did you seriously just ask what was different between the two crashes?! Uuuum, Richard was wearing full race suit, helmet and safety gear, and a tyre blew out. Freddie was in an open top 3 seater going too fast with no helmet. DO THE FREAKIN' MATH Dude FFS
Sounds like Dyslexia on some level. I have learned its not a "disability" its just that I don't learn the way the theoretical "Majority" do but I just learn differently. That is all.

You could say he's a cunny funt
The legendary Stig right here in the comments!
Thanks for having me on, love it. 😊
Thanks so much for coming on!

Car Trek is the UA-camr version of Top Gear.

Jody
Damn, help a brother out with a job
For the record . Freddy Flintoff and Paddy Mcguiness can't drive for Toffee . Where has Chris Harris can .
yeah, with Chris you just go, "right off you go Chris". With them two it's "shit, where are they going to crash"
Next time, could you please make the two orange pipings from the seats meet exactly in the corner during split screen? Oh my OCD.. 😂
Suggestion : less host asking too many often very long questions, and more of just letting the guest speak.
Ben,go watch a Jake Humphrey High Performance. Constructive suggestion.
I'm afraid that seems to be the modern way. Good podcast anyway but your point is valid.
I absolutely agree
A-freakin-MEN!
Andy was a good guy, he liked pulse jets lol
I love two things, pulsejets and Colin’s safety tie!
Im guessing he had to work with you a lot for your own sake Colin 😂
What a sharp well-rounded and practical chap Andy is! 🙌
Such an Interesting, Humourous and Down to Earth Bloke! Loving the pod so far!
What a great guy. Fair play to him
Excellent questions Ben. Great episode, glad I came across your channel.
Yessssss just what I need to listen to get me through work.
Thankyou Both
Ben that's one of your best yet Andys a great guest .

Thank you for the upload and I hope your maths improve!
Isn't that a thing we all fall in love with Trio because they were 3 guys just doing what they like to do with they creativity
I honestly thought this would be a little meh, but man, fascinating!
One of the best episodes to date and really cool insight !
Thanks so much! :)
Really, really enjoyed it. Keep up the Stirling work, Ben!
Ben, you have out done yourself probably the best episode so far and what a great podcast
Brilliant episode, enjoyed that, completely different and insightful 👌🏼
Dude you are an incredible podcaster. If this doesn't work out, you got a career in radio.

One of the best podcasts youve done yet fantastic guest brilliant to hear his story
Enjoyed this one!
Good work Ben!
Thank you so much for this interview ❤
The odd split screen looks like you’ve got your hand around Andy. ❤ Interview.
Questions were great.
More like a conversation than an interview. 👌🏻
Great guest and fantastic podcast.

FANTASTIC EPISODE!
Hush podcast host! I am here for Andy, jeepers let the man speak!!!!
As a person with ADHD and dyslexia I fully understand his method of thinking and to me it is normal. I thought everybody were the same and it came as a shock when I found out most people don't.
Pretty baller podcast was great listening to Andy. He is really great at storytelling and keeping you engaged.
Thank you, really appreciate the compliment.
I don't get why some people hate others for their success. They work hard for it and deserve what they worked for.
James has done a tonne of UA-cam; Drivetribe, What Next?, etc. If you really weren't aware, you're in for a treat when you find it 🙂
"Mission Impossible" cut to James Bond clip, haha
question.
Who interviews whom?

Fascinating.
42:11 complacent, was the word he was looking for.
Great interview!
Great video from some so engaged in managing risk.
This was very interesting and educational
Really like watching your videos. But can you try and line up the stitching of the sofas when in split screen. But of OCD 😂
I've been looking at that... Staring at it. To the point I didn't even hear what they said.😂
Great interview, thanks.
He’s like a Swiss knife of televised danger.

Like Mighty Car Mods?
Found the guy Tom Cruise went and got a new guy because of.
I will stay to the end. See you in 1:17:46 :)
