I've got one of the early ones with the shiny silver stainless barrel. I've put a couple thousand rounds through it now and it's been great. Maybe not the most refined of the .45s that I own, but it's durable, accurate and fun to shoot.
I got a new full size model and it had the silver barrel,sent it back to Ruger unfired and they switched the barrels and sent it back within about 3 weeks. I got the compact 9 and fullsize and the compact is one of the best shooting compacts I've fired so far
I purchase the Ruger competition version with the 5 inch barrel. I am disappointed that Ruger does not support the pistol with a holster or additional size smaller frames.
Actually it was the Ruger P85 that was submitted in the 1980’s to replace the M1911A1, but it had a few deficiencies. The DOD selected the Beretta FS92 or M-9. Sig won the new contract a few years ago with the P320 and P320c or M-17, M-18. Glock tried to bid but it didn’t meet the modular design requirement.

@@wolfhuntersarmory Thanks, I was totally unaware Ruger competed to replace the M-9. I knew Sig and Glock were in contention. It looks like they had the same problem that they did with the P85 back in the 80’s. The P series were serious duty pistols. I’ve got 2 and only had to recently replace the firing pin on my KP I bought in the early 1990s. Like the Berettas (I’ve got the 96FS in .40) they are uncomfortably heavy for everyday carry. I can understand why the DOD went with the lighter polymer, modular designs like the P320. I’ve been carrying the LC9s Pro for 7 years now and am looking to upgrade to one of the double stacks. The Sig 365XL has really caught my eye. I have no plans to use an optic, but it’s nice to have that choice. I’m wondering if Ruger is going to follow Sig with a longer slide and full grip on it’s Max 9. I just wish they would do something with the rear site and maybe put a 1913 rail on it.
@@ronjoseph7973 yeah, I like the P365XL as well, and want to get one soon. I dont personally care about a rail on smaller carry pistols, but on anything with a longer barrel, I think they need one. I do like the 2 Rugers I currently have (the .45acp American Pistol and the 57), and even conceal the American. I wore it to work today in my IWB holster.
Just picked up a .45 cal yesterday and I love it. It shoots great, recoil is not bad at all. I need to improve my grip and trigger pull. Feels great in my hand and I'm glad I added it to my Ruger collection. (5.7, American Competition 9mm, and now the .45.
@@lm1174 I really like it. The ruger feels great in my hands, the recoil is very manageable, and I love the adjustable rear sight. I changed out the front sight and my sight picture is much better. To me, it's an underrated pistol.

Thanks for watching! I love this pistol, and I did the gold myself with nail polish. I color fill all my firearms. The gold just seemed to fit the best. Most of my pistols are used to train new shooters and give them a chance to experience most of the more popular calibers. I also pick one or two to EDC depending on where Im going, what I plan to do that day, and what Im wearing (full sized pistols for winter when im in long pants and jacket, and compact/subcompact for t-shirt and shorts or where I need to easily conceal).

It was a cheap gold nail polish from Walmart. It was somewhere between $1.98 and $3, bit I don't remember the brand. I looked for a good that looked as close to gold foil as I could find that wasn't glittery.
It is definately a "special edition" 😏... I colored the lettering and emblems with gold nail polish. It's just a basic Ruger... nothing special about it.
It's just gold nail polish. And so far, the color has lasted through several hundred rounds, and even being against my under shirt and pants when I have conceal carried the gun. I have a video on how I color fill my guns.
I have a guided question about this firearm... What type of 45 auto ammo does it allow to fire? I had a bad jam and I I'm in the dark due to it being used information would be appreciated
I have run several brands and types through my pistol. All ball rounds run fine. The only issue I had was with a hollowpoint that has a massive cavity in it (don't remember the brand). I do know that the Hornady Critical Duty and Critical Defense, Norma MHP, Sig V-Crown, Federal Punch, and Winchester USA Ready hollowpoints have run perfectly in my Ruger.
I wouldnt be. I have a few pistols that have a bit of side to side play in the mags when fully seated. As long as the mag catch is fully engaged, and you cant pull the mag out by shaking it around, it should be fine.

I loved m 45 compact in grey cerakote.. however i sold it for one reason.. the fact that it doesnt have an actual striker block safety... In most striker fired handguns theres a steel plunger thats under spring tension , thats physically blockingthe firing pin channel.. only moving and clearing the path at the last second of the trigger pull.... This pistol has a sear block... And that was a deal breaker for me.. ive seen striker lugs break on pistols.. and ive also seen broken sears.. both of which would cause a discharge in this pistol. Its a small chance.. but a deadly one... I really hated that.. i loved everthing else about it
You are absolutely correct. Thats one of the reasons this pistol is mostly a range toy. I do occasiinally carry it, but it sits unloaded most of the time for this very reason. I havent heard of anything happening with the Ruger so far, so I feel safe carrying it, but the 10 round mags just dont do it for me, especially when my Canik holds 18 +1 of 9mm, and my Ruger 57 holds 20 + 1 of the 5.7x28.
@@wolfhuntersarmory the striker lug itself is well designed, and has a "strongback" bracing it.. i dont think it would break, but it just dont make alot of sense to me to change it.. its a final safety measure at the last action of firing . The further you get away from the tip of the striker, the more room for failure ..

I chose the .45 version because Im building up my collection, and didn't have a .45acp yet. I already had the Canik TP9sf that comes with 2 18 round mags, and the Girsan Regard MC Sport Gen4 that has 18 round mags.
I love mine but I had trouble with the magazines. The springs went weak and it wouldn't cycle. So I called Ruger and they said not to leave them loaded all the time and sent me new springs. I unloaded the mags every night and loaded them in the morning and after a month they didn't work either. So I bought Smith and Wesson springs and now it runs flawlessly.
Yeah, I would call BS on Ruger for that. If you can't leave the magazines loaded, then they need better QC. I have Taurus pistols and have had Hi-Points that ive left the mags fully loaded for long periods of time (1-2 years without use) and they havent had any issues at all. Its sad a Hi-Point has higher quality springs than Ruger.
@@wolfhuntersarmory They said they hired out the mag production. And they sent me the Gen 2 spring and it wasn't any better. I'm like you I never even gave it a thought I always just leave my pistols mags loaded and have never had a problem, even with cheap pistols. It could have been a great pistol with all it's features but Ruger dropped the ball.
Yes you can, it has a full sized rail, and they can be cut for optics as well... I haven't added anything because its hard to find a holster that will fit with a light without having one custom made. I do have a light I attach to whatever I use as my home defense weapon.

Stronger yes but the actions aren't crisp like a Smith. Yeah they are serviceable but there are many better less expensive choices including Taurus's these days. I agree... Ruger pistols are good, but they could be better... I also have a Sig, S&W, Canik, Taurus, and a Diamondback... i enjoy shooting everything except the Diamondback... its super tiny, and a 9mm. Its dependable and accurate, but its unpleasant to shoot for extended amounts of time.
The Glock 44 was a turd. There was no worse gun than the Sigma .380 and Bodyguard by S&W. The Sig P365 had primer drag and a bunch of broken strikers. I’ve never once had a “bad” Ruger and I own a boatload going back to 1971. In addition, their service is 2nd to none. The few recalls I had took less than 10 business days to get corrected. That’s something few people ever mention.
You know you were just messing around with a fully loaded mag and now you're messing around with a handgun with a magazine in it I would take that magazine out and make sure that the weapon is clear before you start messing around with it
That magazine was empty, but I appreciate the concern. I made sure all the rounds were out of the gun and magazine, because I do keep it loaded all the time.

I honestly thought this was rugers version of a Walther.
They look somewhat similar if you look at them side by side.

You still can get a RAP 45 Pro model in the compact version, just not the full size.

Yeah exactly move the magazine out of the way otherwise the bullets will come out of the magazine and hip into the chamber
