  • These are methods I use to keep my model railroad dust controlled. It is an ongoing battle. One other pointer I neglected to mention is that I highly recommend, especially if you've never done so to contact a reputable home AC Duct cleaning company and have them professionally clean the furnace and ALL AC, and heat ducts in the entire house. In my case the amount of dust they removed was shocking and it made a huge difference all over our house with less dust and better air quality. If you have a large model railroad you need dusted or help with dusting your railroad feel free to contact me at alpug1@verizon.net to discuss.

Thank you. I have always been concerned about dust on a layout. Nothing is more insightful than a dust on trees, trains, and structures.

Al, when I had my present home built in a Dell Webb community, the basement as a future train room was a too priority. As soon as we closed (back East, I understand you call it "settled" or "close of settlement") I immediately had an HVAC conttractor instal an electrostatic air filter on the furnace/central air conditioner intake duct. It was from a well known HVAC equipment manufacturer and is completely ineffective, dare I say "worthless". Worst 1,200 bucks I ever spent! I've replaced it with a HEPA filter that does a much better job.
When I finish the 2,800 sqft basement in preparation for layout construction, I plan to install a couple of ceiling mounted Purifan units, retail approx $700 each. They claim they filter out particles down to 2 microns which is the size of the smallest visible particle in cigarette smoke. They replace a large ceiling fan installation with a 52" blade diameter.
It has a cast concrete floor which I plan to cover with a good grade of indoor/outdoor carpet to suppress concrete dust, deaden sound reverberation, and to be easier on the feet and legs while working on the layout and running trains.

Good advice Al, I would also add a piece of panty hose over vac to keep from sucking up anything important. Man I need to get my basement floor poured this summer, dirt floor is killer.

You don't need to run air cleaners 24/7 but I found that frequently running them helped a lot for my room. Also, I highly recommend having ALL your home ac and heating ducts professionally cleaned in your house by a reputable company.

Al, the best ceiling you can have is drywall. Drop ceilings still allow dust from the floor above to filter down onto the layout.

My compliments on your layout, it's detail is awesome. The amount of trees and foliage is staggering. I appreciate that preventing dust is the prime objective but I would be very interested in how you remove the dust that eventually shows up on your trees and foliage. Thanks

Thanks I often blow off small batches of trees like blowing out candles on a cake. If distant trees get too dusty I will mist them with paint if needed to refresh
