I was honored to spend 28 years officiating high school and college basketball. Some of my closest friends today are the coaches I met along that journey, there aren’t very many people that would put their livelihood in the hands of 16 to 18 year old young men and women. Sadly, I’ve seen firsthand that the majority of good coaches and sports officials leave due to parents.

Being a former collegiate athlete, I use to have high interest in coaching and being a referee. This is why I never did. Parents are the worst of the worst. Most of them never played a competitive sport, or no sport at all. Some have, didn't get far, and living their glory days through their kid which is a damn shame. Theonetrueking: I don't train or coach above the age of 12. I love the kids, hate dealing w/ parents. When my 2 boys played, I always sat on the opposite side so I could just watch my kids play. I hated sitting w/ our team because many of ur parents were obnoxious. I found sitting alone on the opposite side of us the best way to enjoy the game. I don't understand how or why parents act the way they do. Then wonder why it gets trickled down to the kids. I always told the kids I coached and my own two kids, "the day you play the perfect game will be the day you expect a perfect game from a refs". The refs didn't exist to us, we simply played to have fun and compete.
