Thank you SO MUCH for this video! I have been searching for two days trying to find the switch to turn to manually start the defrost mode on my bottom freezer maytag refrigerator with no luck. Although you didn't actually point it out I finally was able to see it's location at 3:30 ! Hallelujah!

Neil, What is your model number? I can check to see if the manufacture has updated the part from the original part.

Hi! Wondering if this is what I need to do. My fridge has a build of ice where you have to take the bottom off on the inside to gain access. The ice block happens where it drains, and blocks the fan from rotating. I have to take apart every couple of months and use hot water to unblock. Cannot afford a new fridge so this would be great if this is what is causing it. Thoughts?

The symptoms would indicate a blocked drain tube or a defrost problem. If the water drains away when you manually defrost the unit, then I would suspect the drain tube is okay. The potential defrost issue could result from either a defective timer, defrost thermostat or heating element. The element can be checked for continuity with a multi-meter as well as the thermostat if it is at freezing temperature when you measure it. You can also manually advance the defrost timer into the defrost mode. If the defrost cycle functions okay, then the timer is most likely the culprit.

Thanks! Ended up with fairly new, used fridge...I did not want to spend alot of money on figuring it all out as it is about 15 years old. If I was a wee bit more handy I would have explored this but also have some renters relying on it so had to act fast. Appreciate the response as it does help me going forward! THANK YOU!!!

Steve, my refrigerator has seized up (the fan in the freezer compartment) due to an immense amount of ice build up.. I suspect it was because of having too many items stored in the freezer, blocking air flow.. but thought it may be because of the defrost not working. I took apart my freezer, and found ice everywhere, defrosted it manually, and powered my fridge back on, and it is working as of now. However, I am not sure how I could test if the defrost is working or not. My fridge is a model Whirlpool WRF736SDAM11 - do you know where it is located on this one? And if it isn't mechanical, do you know where the board is located?

Hello, sorry for the delay. I have researched your model and it doesn't have a defrost time just a defrost heater. www.partselect.com/ModelSections.aspx?ModelID=7170242&ModelNum=WRF736SDAM11&mfgModelNum=&ManufactureID=3&Selected=C8C73F805F582E0455E2D4854B7AB2EB4BB8A904&Position=12&mfg=Whirlpool&Type=Appliance&Mark=12

Your model does not use a mechanical defrost timer but uses the electronic control board to cycle the defrost circuit.
