I'm stunned. As a father, I can't imagine having other adults treating my daughter that way. If she were my child, I would have beseeched her to find another outlet for her considerable talents.
i did gymnastics and dance for almost my entire life and i dont think people understand the amount of muscle that comes with those sports. she isn't "big or fat" she just has more muscle than others
YES! I agree. Muscle weighs more than fat right? Muscle also burns fat. I’ve not ever seen an overweight gymnast. Ever. Kaitlyn was gorgeous in college and probably still is!
She was also becoming a young lady. Some of the girls have genetics that are more curvy than others. It's always the tomboy body type coaches that attack the most viciously it seems.
She was taking a break and gained normal weight from not working out as much. It is her body but that is additional weight that she now has to move with. She proved that it didn’t affect her in performance, but I can see how it could be a concern so focused in a sport that relies so heavily on not just skill but size as well
Yes but she and I are built the same, she naturally has wider hips, thus any muscle she adds on is going to make her look as they used to say "bottom heavy" I weigh 115 lbs, but because where I am proportioned, I look like I need to tone up the lower half, damn genetics.🙄😬
@@cannsmith that’s not the point though. The point is that everyone was calling her fat and making her seem like she wasn’t good enough when she was skinny. You don’t know if she was working out or not and frankly that’s not even the topic at hand
Am so happy she found a coach that not only coached her but recognized the internal anger from being put down in the past and worked with her. So many would have walked away.
Look, this is a physical sport where form meets function both technically and esthetically. The pro standards reject ballerinas for being too tall and models being too short etc….Hopefully she can overcome this issue and come to terms. Let’s face it, it’s great being a private person because you are doing thing to fulfill your own destiny and not constantly seeking others’ approval which is what professional fame is all about.
@@avayu2289 only Catwalk models have had to be a certain type/height and even that is changing slowly. Generally speaking models overall are sought of any age/gender/shape otherwise.
agree that form meets function in elite level sport, but the rules for form are being rewritten in gymnastics, as well as all other female competitive sports. Once upon a time, tennis players looked like Martina Navratilova. And then along came the very muscular Serena Williams. Misty Copeland has an atypical bust size for ballet. Nina Derwael is unusually tall for a gymnast. I believe that coaches and peers need to curtail their archaic ways of thinking because she defeated Simone Biles looking this way. It obviously didn't affect her performance.
@@avayu2289 If you're telling a young evolving girl to essentially starve herself you're putting her at serious risk of complications and even death. I agree form is important but there's a difference between being fat and growing due to hormones and puberty. Your hips get wider and your chest gets bigger. It's science. No amount of starving yourself is going to change your body's natural process. And add muscle to that and it makes them look big but they are healthy and fit. The expectation to be dainty and slim is just not possible.
I'm glad she brought this up & yeah she just became a woman's body //no longer a child // but in no way did she become fat // those coaches need to have real consequences for their actions -- so awful but thank goodness not all of them behave like this
@@colorbar.seh for certain sports they are. Some sports like the one where they swing in a circle and chuck stuff they tend to carry excess fat but other sports the fat can hinder their ability. It's sport specific
The last time I seen her on a balance beam she couldn't dismount without rolling her cankle and falling on her face. Almost as if she gained so much weight her body couldn't support her weight while doing her routine. Funny how that works.
She is an amazing talent at any weight and beautiful to boot. This is a great revelation from this precious young woman!!! More power to her and God bless her!!!❤❤
that's what I'm wondering too can you flip and do balance shit when you are overweight? some coaches like are like gonna roast you... is it bad depends... but do you think the best athletes in world weren't roasted by their own coaches. fuck your coach is your worst enemy in terms of roasting... but do they want you to lose. nah... if someoen else tells you shit they'll be the first in line to beat the fuck out of that guy.
@@criscris428 difference is that she’s not overweight, there’s an atmosphere in certain female sports that you won’t be able to “compete” if you aren’t matching the “perfect/model frame” which is ridiculous. I’ve played plenty of team sports where some of the most athletic dudes were 230+ lbs in like middle school/highschool which could be considered “overweight”. NFL O and D Linemen are the easiest examples of large but still athletic bodies.

Not about the amazing performance and tricks, not about the huge smile on her face, these people watched her routine and pointed out her weight, which literally was nothing. It’s heartbreaking that athletes have to go through this
People got so used to this one specific gymnast body type for women that anything else is seen as disgustingly big, even though she is at her physical prime and an incredible athlete. I'm so sick of female athletes being treated like eye candy that needs to grin all the time and be tiny

Exactly, she has an hourglass body, thick thighs and has boobs, she's like an 10 among of a lot of 6 who thinks that they need to be underweight, but unfortunately she couldn't be able to see how pretty she is
Seeing her perform is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. Plus she is incredibly beautiful. I’m sure so much bad came from something so pure.
So glad she found a coach to encourage and counter the negativity. So many do not get that and it hurts my heart to know how many are traumatized and permanently scarred by the demeaning negativity disguised as motivation and coaching.
Honestly when she does her floor routines I can’t help but to feel joy and amazement. Such an incredible athlete her body was obviously perfectly designed for gymnastics. I’m sad anyone ever made her feel this way.
This applies to work life as well. I've had crappy bosses and I finally have a really good one who makes me feel like a human being. It's amazing how that can affect your motivation and mental health.
When I was a ‘elite’ gymnast we had to weigh ourselves weekly. I was always skinny so they never said anything to me but I had a friend who really struggled with that and didn’t wanna eat fast food or stuff. We were 8-9 years old and training 6 hours a day, like gurl you’re allowed to treat yourself to some fast food
I don't think elite level athletes get the luxury of treating themselves. That's what steps them above the rest. One of my besties was a racecar driver and he survived on tomatoes and cabbage so he could be as light as possible. That's what it took to break the track record.
@@jessequist7450 ok I think gymnastics is a bit different in that regard. You don’t really have to be ‘light as a feather’ because weight can actually give you an advantage on the bars, vault and floor where you can use the vibration of the equipment to your advantage.
Well that’s your parents fault. Unless you or whoever wants to be a winner and have no issue with training to become a champion you know as a gymnast what it takes to win. If you just want to have fun there are teams and places you can go for that atmosphere. The problem I see is the parents that want to live their lives through their kids and pushing them while never asking them if this is what they want. Parents are the reason it’s getting almost impossible to get umpires and referees for kids sports. They’re fed up with being demeaned and threatened because of calls they make. It’s not worth it.
Hello Katelyn,I am in South Africa and I never knew anything about gymnastics until I saw your videos here on you tube and I must say the skill you possess and display, it's truly out of the this world and your weight had and still has nothing to do with your talent.Glad you never gave up.
@@mattwoods8872 Wait, the coach you're referring to isn't the same. The previous coaches were sued for drug abuse and Ohashi's parents were witness to their crimes. They testified in front of a Florida court and the 3 coaches were found guilty, and were sent to a max security facility there because the judge flexed his constitutional authority over 3 Ukrainian meth heads. PS I love Ukraine and its independence from Russia, but this is a topic for another time. Please don't insert politics into this. The 3 coaches were also abusive to Olesya Rulin before she quit gymnastics and went on to become an actress and violinist in NYO
Or you could just thank the coaches... ya know, instead of whatever nonsensical made up invisible magic sky fairy your parents happened to be duped into believing before passing those same delusional beliefs down to you. *facepalm*
Thank the coaches for calling her fat, an Elephant, look like you swallowed a pig? That's caring? The girl is/was incredible. Don't judges judge on ability application etc. Not on the look, then they is other issues of appropriation. Anyone been inapropriate is the camera engineer and editer. Not the gymnast.
@@johnk6598 the extra mass of muscles can mean needing a longer run up etc to be able to get enough momentum to do the tricks. But the regulation floor space for competition doesn't give lots of room for that so it's a balance. But at the end of the day it's dumb. It's never okay to talk to anyone about their body like that. Especially not to young girls.
@@johnk6598 her previous coaches did what they learned and what they were taught. Ms Val, the coach that turned her career around, realized after a really awful season that it wasn't working and did something new. Positive reinforcement, having fun, bringing joy. It showed so much in the results that the routine went viral even among people who don't follow gymnastics.
Just like with ballet and figure skating. You need to be slim, but coaches get so fixated on this "perfect body image" for those athletes that they don't even care how these girls will develop ostheoporosis, stop their peridos etc. But as long as they are pretty and able to do tricks that are hard just for the sake of being hard to do, it stops being an art form
Dearest Katelyn, One of your U-T "shorts" (floor excise) came up on my time-line in the last few days.. You did moves that I thought was humanly impossible and I thank you for that!

I'm so glad Katelyn found herself a new coach because I think so much of what makes her sensational is her beautiful personality, her beautiful smile and how she has fun with what she is doing, none of that would have been achievable before, especially her genuine happiness, you can't fake that. I have always thought you were amazing and perfect just as you are Katelyn.
I am periodically battling addiction to watching Kaitlyn Ohashi doing absolutely anything on the floor. But every time I see her, a wave of happiness washes over me. I will never quit. Thank you Kaitlyn, I know there are thousands and thousands who have been made by your work, and through the results of your struggles. Thank you.
It is so wild to me that coaches in sports like gym think that negative abuse makes gymnasts stronger than positive reinforcement and care. People need to be built up and those strong foundations help them to become great athletes. If you are being torn down by coaches and support people and even other athletes, you will collapse under pressure because you no longer think you're worth enough to stand tall and true. Once you lose faith in yourself you will never succeed, and it breaks my heart that there are coaches who tear down their students, and kill the faith in themselves and the joy that came from doing the sport for themselves, instead of other people. I appreciate those like Katelyn Ohashi speaking out about this sort of thing because how can we expect anyone, let alone gymnasts, to flourish when they are simultaneously being taught to hate their bodies and to think of themselves as living for some external goal from someone else, instead of living for themselves and putting their own goals and happiness first? It's why many people also think the most courageous thing Simone Biles did was to put her own health (physical and mental) instead of sacrificing it to the dais of gymnastics.
I always appreciated Shawn Johnson’s coach, Chow. He let her have a pretty normal childhood. She did ball games and dances as well as training. I think he balanced her very good. Marta and USAG pushed way too hard. I’m glad Simone took her mental health by hand to help herself. I’ve always wondered why USAG promoted such a toxic environment. I will be shocked if Simone comes back. I hope she enjoys life and finds other passions along the way!
You know, it really depends on the person. A lot of people respond to positive approaches, but there are some who need that push from the negative. It also depends heavily on the coach and the trust between the two.
@Boogie Nights Mark Wahlberg yeah, it seems like some need to realize what lines not to cross as well! like what the hell does her weight and appearance have to do with it if her performance is great?

UGH! It takes an INCREDIBLE amount of muscle and strength to perform gymnastics at her level. Some gymnasts stay tiny, but perform better when skinny is not a factor. This girl is a powerhouse of talent. 💪🏼✨👏🏼
I completely understand how she feels. I am a cheerleader who’s done cheer for 10 years. When I moved to school cheer from competitive cheer I had this very rude coach. I’ve had to put up with her for two years now and she’s even my science teacher. I was the center flyer and was in the center for stunts and tumbling and all that. I was extremely skinny and tiny, but she later started to comment about how I was getting “bigger” and that I needed to lose some weight. I got so frustrated with my self that I was accordingly “getting bigger”. I got removed from being a flyer and I was moved to the back, because I was “embarrassing to look at”. I would always let her words get to me, so one day I just stopped eating. After this it became a habit. I would not eat anything all day and I would only drink a little water. I started to become very lightheaded daily and I would almost pass out from not eating and hardly drinking. I didn’t tell my mom that this was all happening till she figured out I wasn’t eating. When she figured out, she immediately went up to the school about all of this. I’ve lost 45 pounds from this woman and her nasty comments. I’ve started to gain an eating disorder as well. Don’t let mean comments get to you like I did. It’s not worth almost losing your life for someone’s nasty, mean words. It’s also very safe to say that I will NOT be doing this cheer team under her supervision next year.
What a horrible woman. She's still teaching and coaching cheer? If she bullied one person into an eating disorder, she's likely done the same to others. I hope you're taking care of yourself now! You did not deserve any of that.

@@criscris428 difference is that she’s not overweight, there’s an atmosphere in certain female sports that you won’t be able to “compete” if you aren’t matching the “perfect/model frame” which is ridiculous. This applies to work life as well. I've had crappy bosses and I finally have a really good one who makes me feel like a human being. It's amazing how that can affect your motivation and mental health.
A good coach will also tell you if you are overweight
When I was a ‘elite’ gymnast we had to weigh ourselves weekly. I was always skinny so they never said anything to me but I had a friend who really struggled with that and didn’t wanna eat fast food or stuff. We were 8-9 years old and training 6 hours a day, like gurl you’re allowed to treat yourself to some fast food
Yesss this I think is so icky how the thing we loved becomes a job a gross job in ballet we had to do that too it was the worst part of the day for us
You'd think it was an eating disorder clinic by weighing weekly.

Don't judges judge on ability application etc. Not on the look, then they is other issues of appropriation. Anyone been inapropriate is the camera engineer and editer. Not the gymnast.
Didn’t her extra muscle mass enable her to do what no other gymnast could do? That was the Ohashi revenge twist.
So why would a coach discourage a physique that improved her performance? I think a grain of salt is due here
@@johnk6598 are you fucking kidding
@@johnk6598 the extra mass of muscles can mean needing a longer run up etc to be able to get enough momentum to do the tricks. But the regulation floor space for competition doesn't give lots of room for that so it's a balance. But at the end of the day it's dumb. It's never okay to talk to anyone about their body like that.

So true and important! Not only in sports. Thank you.
