I used to treat all my hay wagons every fall with the same stuff. I had one my dad built and he taught me the same process of treating. 40+ yrs and the wood still looks new. He used to call it a poor farmers creosote. Great video!
We used used motor oil that we call.."bunnhail" (Creole for burnt oil) It's the one that has been already used in vehicles and/or electric plants. Due to its black color it gives wooden houses a dark stain appearance. When dried then we paint...great for repelling bugs too...Great job!! PEACE 🙏
If you want to use new or newer oil but want a dark or brown finish you can add small amounts of rustoleum to your mix, this can be the spray form or oil paint in the can.
Iv heard this one two used it when I lived at home take an old cow water trof fill it with diesel and oil and stand your wood fence posts in it leave to soke then swop them for another lot don't no if you have tryed this one but take care xx
Really changed the looks of those 2x4s. I have done that to manure spreaders that I have redone. Works well on wooden truck bodies. Thanks for sharing. Many blessings.
Thank you very much for this video like you say treated wood here is so expensive and now that you showed me this I can treat my own wood thank you very much
I would be concerned about the added risk of fire. I'm sure there are projects it wouldn't be a concern like fence posts, concrete forms etc. Great way to reuse though.
Just a quick comment on getting diesel (or gas, or oil) on your hands. First wash your hands with WD-40 (it smells a lot better than diesel or gasoline, in my opinion anyway). Then, wash your hands with some good soap and water.
Have seen it work well in ground, but avoid constant contact with moisture (even with pressure treated) by using a membrane or plastic coating, and leaving any cement open at the bottom of the butt.
Why do you treat me this way?!?! haha I've been using new oil, and it's a little expensive. So I mix a lot more diesel than you do. Also, I'm spraying a large fence around the house, and I'm guessing that the solution needs to be thin for the sprayer to function. For now, everything seems to be working well. I just hope all my work doesn't completely evaporate in a few days!
This method makes the wood last very long, depending on how deep it soaks in to the wood and the choice of wood, etc. However BEWARE THAT THIS USED MOTOR OIL CONTAINS HEAVY METALS AND OTHER STUFF, i.e. don't use it in large amounts near food plots... for obvious reasons
@@acresofclayhomestead It does not make it any more flamable. The deseil fuel is used to thin the oil so it will give it better capability to go into the wood. After a day or two of drying the sun. The fuel oil mix will dry out leaving the molecules in bedded in the wood.
Has anybody heard of "wood stain"? It contains petroleum distillates and has been used by woodworkers for many years. I am fairly sure that engine oil is made of petroleum distillates.
Seems really good, how is it seem a little bit opened? I mixed with used engine oil with diesel 50/50 ratio. And got really a dark black colour. How did u achieve a opened colour like a stain sir?
You either used heavy crude oil, used a pennzoil or Castrol with additives making it darker possible even way overdue on a oil change, or you got your ratios off.
I do get a kick out of you when something get loud or distracts your videoing. I understand how you feel at that moment so please don't think I am sitting here laughing at you I'm not. I've just made a video or two and know what its like to have something happen outside my plans for that video. God bless. 🙂
absolutely not. Just as you need to change your engine oil every 5K miles. Due to viscosity breakdown, you need to recycle your left over used oil immediately after applying to your wood posts
I just applied, with a brush, a mixture of engine oil and diesel fuel to a piece of 2" x 6" x 16' pt board that'll go on my fence. It rains quite a bit where I live, in Florida. Does anyone know -not guess- how long the protection will last?
@@acresofclayhomestead Can we do this in any temperature? Living in MINNESOTA and we want to build a few outdoor things and the weather is cold. Does it have to be above freezing?

My used engine oil looks a lot blacker than that. :) I used it to treat some wooden gates I built from planed, untreated timber, 12 years ago and they have held up really well. I wonder if anyone has actually tested spent motor oil to see how well it preserves timber.
Hey, I'm a mechanic! what's so bad about having diesel fuel and oil on your hands?! it smells manly and attracts the ladies.... haa, we're celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary. she says she likes the smell... well women, you never really know, now do you?...
what a terrible way to treat new wood. my builder did the same to the fence and it was a terrible job. factory treated wood is much different than this ridiculous method.
I wouldn't call it terrible or ridiculous. If you don't agree with this method and wants to spend money on factory treated wood then that's your choice. Her choice is doing this way and it's working for her. Thanks for sharing.
Would this be safe for logs around a raised vegetable garden bed. I started coating logs around our raised bed until someone said this might cause our soil yo be contaminated. What do you think?

I heard Creosote is made of ash or left over tar but is similar to burnt ash. If so, I was wondering what the oil mixed with wood ash would do?
ATV noise, the "Birds invasion" and a tornado, girl just keeps going. LOVE IT!
dont forget about the wind poor girl
Got to love the country better than city life
Some of these clips and transitions are unintentionally hilarious.

We used burnt motor oil on all of our fence post for 10 acres about 28 years ago, still to this day the post are like new

Yes, we've done it to wooden truck beds and wagons also. Helps the wood repel water and last for years.
Thank you very much for this video like you say treated wood here is so expensive and now that you showed me this I can treat my own wood thank you very much
Looks fantastic never really thought of treating it myself just always bought treated wood
Love all your videos, thank you for sharing with us! Hope you and your family are having a wonderful day!
That’s great to know! Thank you 🙏❤️🙏
It has to be used engine oil the carbon on the oil is what preserves the wood, the oils also helps keep water moisture out
Good water proofer. Thanks for the great demo video!
I'm gonna have to try this those boards looked really good

Very good sharing🥰👏👏👏
You’re awesome, thank you.
I'll do this to the pile foundation of my house. Maybe it will also keep away cockroaches and spiders besides treating the timber, I shall find out.
Great video .love your channel. Question for anyone..how would this practice be for poles that are going into the ground?
If using in the ground, I would probably soak the pole for a couple weeks so it's good and saturated. (I've never tried it though.)
Have seen it work well in ground, but avoid constant contact with moisture (even with pressure treated) by using a membrane or plastic coating, and leaving any cement open at the bottom of the butt.
I love the name of your farm 😂 and cool technique
I use a 3 in roller, I go to the tractor dealer for the used oil
Great job! Thanks for the video
Do this stop termites from eating the lumber

i have heard hot wax is added for that?
Very good point, also any leakages will ultimately ruin groundwater.
thanks for the tip also where is the chicken run? can't find the video
Hmm, I have a video. Made it last Spring.
You can use kerosene or mineral turpentine in your oil too.
I had no idea this was an option! This may sound silly but...does this make the wood more flammable???
No, I don't think the wood is any more flammable than it already is. Great question though!
@@acresofclayhomestead It does not make it any more flamable. The deseil fuel is used to thin the oil so it will give it better capability to go into the wood. After a day or two of drying the sun. The fuel oil mix will dry out leaving the molecules in bedded in the wood.

this video is from 2019, may I ask how this wood is holding up now please. This is a great idea as wood preservative is mega expensive here in the UK
The wood is doing great! I put another coat of oil on it this spring.
Thank you for your information.
I'm going to try it on my fence boards.
Was that a storm or a fox that scared the chickens?
It wasn't a storm just a burst of wind flying through the yard.

I'm planning to build a deck. Would the Diesel make the wood a fire hazard?
Diesel is only flammable when pressurized.
Nice hoodie 🖐
Does it work?
After you treat Can you safe the rest of the oil for used next time ?
Yes
absolutely not. Just as you need to change your engine oil every 5K miles. Due to viscosity breakdown, you need to recycle your left over used oil immediately after applying to your wood posts
How about using a spray bottle? Works?
I'm trying to find out if wood treated with motor oil will work okay when laid on concrete block about 3 ft from the ground.
Yes, that would work.
@@acresofclayhomestead thanks.
Now to mix with anti-termite mix.

does the wood smell like oil after it dries?
No, not after it dries.
It won't. Instead, the woods will look very nice and last a longggg timeeeee.
I was wondering this as well! Thank you
Is this commonly done. Do you know of anyone that's used lumber treated this way and how it held up?
We've done it as long as I can remember. Wood can last a long time if it's done properly.
The next time someone asks me how I managed to get motor oil in ny hair/on my face I'm referring them to this video haha.

I did try Thompson wood treatment one time and the wood warped up real bad
Was THAT oil based?
Is this wood now very flammable?
Just don't smoke around it.

Last oil I used was very black too.😄
At least 20 years I bet if you reapply probably a hundred years
I had no clue about this.
Ever soak wood in used motor oil?
Did you watch the video????????????????????????????????????????????
Does it "dry" or does it keep that oily film on it
It dries. I have used it as a trial on Bamboo.
Can I use new motor oil for a lighter color ?
maybe you could get a couple pieces of wood and test it out for yourself...Just a thought
Need a lil cigar paint roller be quicker
Olá vim fazer uma visita no seu trabalho gostei muito e já fortalecendo 💪 quando tiver um tempinho vem no meu trabalho também tá obrigada
