  • In response to Gov. Gavin Newsom's proposed 2024-25 budget, CSBA President Albert Gonzalez issued the following statement: “We applaud Gov. Gavin Newsom for demonstrating his commitment to public education by funding schools above the Proposition 98 Minimum Guarantee, even during times of budgetary stress, and hope the Legislature will follow the Governor’s lead in prioritizing public schools. The Governor’s proposal reflects many of our budget priorities, such as maintaining the Local Control Funding Formula at existing levels, providing for the continued rollout of transitional kindergarten, and preserving resources for student mental health and maintaining previous gains in special education funding. We are concerned to see a reduction in school facilities funding and a cost-of-living adjustment below 1 percent, but understand a $38 billion deficit demands tradeoffs. Overall, the Governor’s budget maintains the resources and flexibility schools benefited from in recent years and provides funding to accelerate post-pandemic learning, address the youth mental health crisis and help to prepare for the expiration of COVID relief funding.”
