after all the reviews and movie trailers, I was really expecting something MORE. It was indeed a good book, I enjoyed myself reading it, but it didn't live up to what people thought it was.
I was just about to comment how you should probably hold back on some of the 'like' and then, BAM, you got me! This book just doesn't do it for me though. . .
I would like to distinguish the fans of the book from the Nerdfighter community. Not all readers of John's books are Nerdfighters, but a lot of people in the community have read his books. I loved your review and honest opinions, and they are true. What I got from the book after reading it wasn't the love story. It's not about living as much as it is about death and handling the grief that comes along with it. It's about making what little time you have, with or without cancer, count, even if it is just one person. It's one of those books you read and, immediately after, go tell everyone you love that you love them. That's what I wish most people would take from the novel.
I like to imagine a Fault in Our Stars fan standing on the side pointing a gun at Travis, telling him that if he doesn't rate the book at least four stars he'll pull the trigger.
I loved this book, and I was really moved by it. It's a cancer story, but it's also a love story, and it was pretty deep I thought. I did really enjoy the dialogue.
LIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKELIKE and no I do not mean I liked the video or disliked the video. I just turned it off after the 52nd "like" you said. Too bad because I was enjoying it up until then.
I think you reviewed it well. You may not have completely enjoyed it but at least you did not bash it. I am in the process of reading this book. It does have its moments where it can be a tear jerker. But the line you quoted where she got her first time monthly got the same response from me , too.
I had a feeling that's how you would feel from previous book reviews, was still curious none the less! It's the one liners and the way John develops his characters that make me love him (and yes my love for the vlogbrothers is definitely a factor). Thanks for the videos Travis!
One of the most accurate reviews of this book. I don't get the hype on UA-cam, it's was OK, but I felt it blackmailed me emotionally to cry. Anyway everything is a point of view... So fuck this book!
This book is good, I would recommend it to anybody. What I really don't understand is why mocking other community? They love this book then so what?? I really like this book, I think his writing style is very original, that's maybe because I didn't read a lot of books and oh! You are so much better than me.. This book is great, it just not good enough to fulfill anybody's big ego..
Not for nothing be he's not mocking anyone's community. he just wasn't blown away by the book. To me the book was ehhh but I still love john Green and his Crash Course
I only read it because you said it wasn't a bad book, and I agree. I was expecting something very cheesy and teen-driven, but it really avoided being that (a little too hard at times). The problems that I had were that Hazel and Augustus were a bit *too* witty and that took away from their realism, I think. I also noticed Hazel (or John Green, if we're being technical) sometimes shoved awkward metaphors into the end of a paragraph. Almost the whole book is based on metaphors, but I'm talking about those specific end-paragraph metaphors. Also, I felt very off in that sudden ending, too, even though I was kind of expecting it. Overall, it's not a bad book by any means...
Thanks for the review, was a bit worried that the source material for the movie may not be good. But I'm a bit more optimistic now that I know the book is good. Cause I'm curious about the movie, since it has the same writing team as 500 days of summer, and the spectacular now. Thanks again :)
I loved and you say that we can prove our maturity haha I love this book but I agree with all you said. It's not my favorite of all time, you know. But I think that the special thing about this book is the john green writing style and this amazing and totally realetables characters
You should read the Animorphs books by K.A. Applegate. The books are tiny, and the first couple of books like "Eh, I guess I'll read some more," but as the series goes on the writing gets a LOT better.
I saw the movie before reading the book and I thought they were both great. I don't think the book had a certain "x-factor" besides how me and my crush bonded over it. It was a great read though.
I will agree that a lot of the plot points were overly predictable, but it had humor and was well written. Was it perfect? No however, I still really liked it
Well I liked the characters. Hazel really is a good person and Augustus is quirky. The book is about how they’ll spend their last months and with what kind of attitude. I’ve read a handful of books where the protagonist is dying but I enjoyed hazel and Gus more
i am like reading the book like right now like currently and i like like it allot like its very like good. i love this book so for but the likes are annoying indeed and i like dislike that fact that there are many like's in this book but overal like so far like good like like very good. the writing is okay, aside from all the like's. i would now not already tell my score because i am still reading it, i might come back to this and edit this comment afterwards. *EDIT* i just had finished the book and i would give it 4/5 or 8/10 its a good book but Its a little sad at the ending and an easy read. only real petpeeve i had with this book was the "like" stuff. realy annoying. and it was indeed somewhat predictable but otherwise a great book. very quick read and easy for people who doesn't read allot.
If all that you took away from this review is that he says the word "like" repeatedly to prove a point, you should discontinue watching book reviews. I felt as if "Like, whatever" filled in mental blanks that the author had between trying to portray a teenager and not dumb down his own lexicon. Even if a teenager has cancer, the likelihood of them understanding the proper usage of nihilism is very slim. Especially if they curse, or say "like" every other sentence that they speak.
Nerdfighteria isn't a cult, it's a community. Cults are religious groups that focus on a specific object or subject. Nerdfighters don't worship a specific object, they share their love for different nerdy stuff. If communities were to be misconstrued as cults, wouldn't the bookworm community be called a cult just because they all love books and talk about them?
He didn't say it was a cult, he said it had a cult following. They're two completely different things. A cult following refers to a group of fans who are highly dedicated to a work of culture (eg. film, book, artist, sportsperson, etc.), which undeniably describes nerdfighteria accurately
This review made me crack up in some places. About the book: I very much liked Augustus. It wasn't a bad read, but nope, it did not tromp my (only) favorite book ever (Lament, by Maggie Stiefvater) and it didn't even become my possible second (that position goes to Paper Valentine, by Brenna Yovanoff). It's not a book I would read again, because it didn't leave that much of an impression on me. I'd have to say that my favorite John Green book that I've read is Will Greyson Will Greyson.
I am a HUGEEEE fan of romance books. Okay so this book got a pretty bad review from you, is there any romance books that catch your eye and you would recommend?
More "like" that joke went over, like, everyone's heads. I mean, like, it's totally necessary to write the word "like". It, like, makes the characters more realistic.
studder budder no i'm not young i'm 22 but i fill all my free time with playing video games and watching videos and tv. but i'm trying to read more now.
Augustus doesn't get sick until half the book is done. So I feel that is a spoiler since it's a twist in the story and so far in. Otherwise very nice review.
You know you said that the book was unoriginal and that u could of think of other books like it could you suggest any of these books please could I would very much like to read them
I read it before I found out about the vlogbrothers, and I thought it was a solid book for what it was. However, it's constantly compared to The Perks of Being A Wallflower (both being two of the most popular YA books at the moment) and personally I don't think it holds a candle to The Perks simply for it's lack of relate-ability. Most people experience freshman year, significantly less are dying of cancer. Still love John, his books, and Nerdfighteria, but TFiOS isn't the Bible of YA fiction.
I must say, I wasn't impressed with The Fault in Our Stars. John Green is my favorite author and have read his other 3 books (LFA, AAK, PT) and loved them. I love the plot of the conflicted female who's fairly mysterious and the male feels he has to fix her, or solve her. Loooove those kinds of books, but TFIOS was just not for me. Unfortunately, I couldn't bring myself to finish it. And I think the public and society ruined it for me, partly. Because this book was so hyped about, I expected more from John, but was disappointed when it was an unrealistic book (in my opinion). I am glad that John got the publicity he deserved, though, because TFIOS influenced me to read the other 3, that are my favorite books of all time. I may have a different opinion, but please don't try and change it to yours. sorry just wanted to say my opinion! :) hbu?
I defiantly agreed with your intro. This book is not that special and this is a good read for the 'unreading' crowd. I reviewed this book myself on my channel too, you can check it out if you'd like :)
The amount of like people who like don't like get your joke is like disappointing.
Lol
The human
apparently, josh is infected by "like". no worries josh, i got yo back brah. :]
robert are you guys trolling? did you watch the video?
Please stop saying like its so annoying find a new word I beg of you. (I knew it was a joke, but it was still frustrating)
Finally a reviewer who will dish the dirt out on this book
Maybe I'm just too old but I really disliked this bloated, over-hyped book.
after all the reviews and movie trailers, I was really expecting something MORE. It was indeed a good book, I enjoyed myself reading it, but it didn't live up to what people thought it was.
Taco Pizza That's very kind of you to say :)
I think this was a really good review and i'm glad you gave an honest opinion instead of pretending to love it to escape the wrath of crazy fans.
The people that like, don't get sarcasm, are like, too many, and like, I don't get how they like, didn't get a like, obvious joke.
It's like a very good review.
I was just about to comment how you should probably hold back on some of the 'like' and then, BAM, you got me! This book just doesn't do it for me though. . .

You do realize I was, like, making a point on the writing, right? I didn't, like, want to say like because I, like, liked saying it...
I half realized that you were making that point but when I skipped ahead you were still doing it so I stopped watching because it was too brutal.
By far the best part of the episode. I'm sorry you even had to endure that.
He was making a point about something in the prose of the novel.
i never want to hear the word like again..
Like in this comment?
i didn't notice Hazel said like a lot...
I thought so too! I thought I was going crazy and just didn't notice it.
I agree with everything you said. This book didn't blow me away, but it was okay. My favorite John Green book is "An Abundance of Katherines"
That's a great book. I personally think they're equally great.
I just want to say, the like joke was integrated so smoothly XD
I think you reviewed it well. You may not have completely enjoyed it but at least you did not bash it. I am in the process of reading this book. It does have its moments where it can be a tear jerker. But the line you quoted where she got her first time monthly got the same response from me , too.
I don't get how you people cry, it is just a work of fiction
I had a feeling that's how you would feel from previous book reviews, was still curious none the less! It's the one liners and the way John develops his characters that make me love him (and yes my love for the vlogbrothers is definitely a factor). Thanks for the videos Travis!

I really like your honest opinion i did also felt the same .
My sister told me there was something about Augustus carrying around cigarettes that he never actually smokes.
When first I read this book. I felt "is this what they call masterpiece? Bullshit!"
It was beautifully created
It's about how we express are feelings of love and how it can be achieved in a very short time
I watched the movie and I liked it, but I have no intention of reading it. Great review, though!
"if you don't read a lot you might be blown away by this book"
aka 14 year old me
good review!!! i agree with all your points. i also love the constructive criticism.
I liked it. A lot.
Maybe because I wasn't exposed to many cancer stories at all (as in, FIRST CANCER STORY.)
But I see your points.
This book is good, I would recommend it to anybody. What I really don't understand is why mocking other community? They love this book then so what?? I really like this book, I think his writing style is very original, that's maybe because I didn't read a lot of books and oh! You are so much better than me.. Do reviews again, please!! I loved these!
I don't really get what nerdfighters would have to be mad about.
Anything that doesn't give utmost praise to their god, John Green.
Like seriously?
I only read it because you said it wasn't a bad book, and I agree. I was expecting something very cheesy and teen-driven, but it really avoided being that (a little too hard at times). I feel like Augustus was Doc Holiday in a past life. Making light of his shitty situation.
can you please review Paper Towns or Looking for Alaska?

Nice review Travis. Keep on rockin' that awesome beard!
The cynicism shines on and on in "Fault in Our Stars." Not a fan.

Valid debunk-ment, touche
pretty good review, and yes, it is over-rated. The predictable pot kills it.
Good review, man!
Nice profile and I agree
This book was so predictable to me. I got bored and stopped reading it!

I have no idea who John Green is, and I didn't know this book existed. Until now. Well.
i agree with the review, althought i expected more from john green and his age, this book does not have an x factor
this was my first book and i loved it.

Can you please review the first book in the new jedi order series?
Also, contrary to the majority, I didn't cry.
You strike me as an asshole... really. This was a good honest review! You have a new subscriber. Keep these videos coming!
You should review some Linwood Barclay books, for sure.
I remember that "Love Story" movie was about that same plot.

Review The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy.

I defiantly agreed with your intro. This book is not that special and this is a good read for the 'unreading' crowd. I reviewed this book myself on my channel too, you can check it out if you'd like :)

Good review Travis, on the whole I agree with you. A good read but very unoriginal.
