There are more, like the more direct connections to Mad Father, but those two particularly stood out to me. LOL

BTW the reason why you can just leave after 1 hour in the Witches House is presumably because "Ellen" (Viola) bleeds out and dies. Granted this only works if you never initiate the ending chase, but it's still cool and morbid.
That ending is really sad because Ellen just waits for Viola to die. Like, she doesn't even want to confront her, doesn't want anything to do with Viola, practically her saviour, anymore while Viola is waiting for a glimmer of hope that never comes and just suffers for an hour until she dies from the pain. Objectively, is better for her that she dies like this rather than being shot by her own father she loves and while being mocked about it by the witch who caused your demise.

RPG Horror was my first true deep dive into horror games and I'll never stop loving it. Smaller UA-camrs like Pikasprey who did nothing but long af playthroughs of stuff like this, alongside other things, are what got me into it.
I have this particular crack-theory about The Witch's House which I wanna share because I can't shake this idea about the cat, and some other events in the game: In the true ending, it's revealed that Ellen mutilated herself and swapped bodies with Viola, but was halted in the woods during her escape from the house (referring to the roses); the event that kicks off the start of the game. It's also revealed that the cat is actually the demon that Ellen made a contract with. In exchange for power and an eventual cure to her terminal illness, Ellen owes and feeds the demon countless souls, but he notes that he has a particular interest in HERS; it's understated in the game just how much mastery the cat has over time and space, but the cat will reset time recursively until she's able to complete her contract. The cat is presented as your save/load function, but every event in your playthrough is invariably canon, because all the cat is doing is bridging timelines to any given point in the story, presuming that he's been spoken to at said point. This is important; every time the player loads a save, the cat is canonically hopping the perspective back to any given saved point in time, but the previous events (deaths) still stand, they aren't erased from history. This gives me the idea that we need to dig a little bit deeper than the ending at face value. We know that the cat is the one in control of the save/load function in the story, but in practice so is the player, the same player partially responsible for the many, (made retroactively infinite by the cat) deaths of both Ellen and Viola. We can assume that-- since the demon exists outside of the standard temporal continuum-- he's free to harvest Ellen's or Viola's soul after every death; he'll just bridge back to any point before they died, again, just like we will. Because of this, I think that the player IS---for all intents and purposes---THE CAT, and that Viola's soul is more powerful by nature than Ellen's which is the only reason why the cat even bothers to turn the events of the game into a set of stable time-loops which progress toward the death of viola to begin with. The Witch's House is a tragedy for everybody involved. Primarily for Viola; she's innocent, but also for Ellen, the game itself is an ironic hell, not divine punishment because Ellen deserves it for being so irredeemably horrible, but because the cat (the player) IS PLAYING WITH HIS FOOD.
I like the theory except the part where you assume the infinite soul harvesting bug. To assume that is to assume infinite "unique" souls, infinite cat food, and thus infinite power.
@@ultimaxkom8728 What manner of limitation would you put on a domineering, unbelievably overpowered immortal magical demon who is proven to exist outside of all continuity and who has nearly complete mastery over space and time which he constantly leverages with the sole purpose of being fed countless souls as part of his contract with viola after which he's meant to eat her particularly high quality soul too? Nothing implies that having your soul eaten in one timeline will destroy it in every other; there isn't anything holding him back from doing that. He's allowed to be duplicitous, the countless souls could have been intended to be hers all along. Also, by virtue of having mastery over spacetime, his power is demonstrably "infinite" as is, which isn't the same as being omnipotent. I don't see why eating as many souls as he could ever want is the straw that breaks the camel's back and gives him infinite power: it could also just be for satiety's sake. If the cat exists outside of the continuum, and him eating viola's or ellen's soul after death is a universal constant in every timeline they meet in, then it's already retroactively proven in a "time magic is overpowered bullshit" sorta way; that's no bug. Also sorry about the wall of text I'm way too into stuff with busted temporal mechanics
The cat is not harvesting Ellen. There is an easter egg where one of your deaths leave a bloodstain behind in the house. The cat going back in time is a canon ability that Ellen is aware of. Ellen is the one playing with Viola. she knew full well she could have just waited for Viola to bleed out and die but went back in the house anyways. There is more dialogue you get if you don't use saves once where it is mentioned from Ellen her own house would not kill her. These are the notes that it uses to guide her around the traps.
I remember playing Ib FOREVER ago, genuinely great game though ive forgotten most of it, except one area... gary's doll room with the painting. such an iconic sequence
Considering the type of horror you seem to enjoy from the first few games mentionned you should totally check out Hello Charlotte (that shares similarities with OMORI), another hidden RPG Maker gem. The first two episodes are free to play, imo the first one isn't particularly interesting but it's still important to check out.
Mary's story still tears at my heart every time. There isnt a way to save her, all she wanted was to become real. Espically her personal ending where she is simply trapped in a limbo she cant escape from.
Man I always love to see more RPG maker content in this day and age tm. Honestly, one thing I always remembered about Ib was definitely the music as well as the story, that stuff was atmospheric as hell and I still listen to some tracks on repeat
I can't believe you covered stray cat crossing. Possibly my favorite game ever, but i never really saw a ton of media about it or interaction with it, which made me *so sad* people weren't experiencing such an awesome story, soundtrack, and overall game. So so glad to see someone else enjoy it. And therefore you can also imagine how gagged i was when its segue was "let's play something not so dark".
I remember I actually played Ib a lot way back when. It was introduced to me as a teen by another teen. To this day I'm not very fond of Horror games, but there are a chosen few that I really did enjoy, Ib being one of the firsts.
I would really like to say that Aya is only killing patients with terminal illnesses to give them peace and is a doctor doing good deeds It’s still not the BEST reasoning, but given the setting doesn’t really suggest that Aya has access to modern technology, she’s actually a pretty empathetic person/doctor I know I said it during the stream, but the entire point of the remake and Blood Mode is to show that despite her ENTIRE FAMILY worked against her, Aya turned out okay through her shared trauma with Maria
That doesn't really justify it at all though. Disregarding a disabled person's autonomy and will to live to kill them 'to give them peace' is straight up eugenics.
Also, if I end up being the PakPak Fandom's Aya Defender guy, at least I get to see a bunch of my stream comments in the video So yeah, I feel pretty proud of that non-cool thing lmao
I don't know if my comment didn't post but that's still straight up eugenics.... Killing disabled people against their will to 'give them peace' is still super fucking awful!
@@wasperfly Dude, I already said it’s not the best explanation and that she doesn’t have access to modern tech, so I’m not fully defending her actions. Far from it, really I’m mostly comparing her to her father, who we all agree is a heinous monster. Trying to give peace to people with chronic illnesses (not disabilities like you said) is tame in comparison. Also eugenics? Really? She doesn’t consider them lesser because of their illnesses, only that they deserve better. She’s not culling people to better the breeding population, she’s doing medical care. If anyone is an eugenicist, it’s her parents (mainly her father) and Aya is a byproduct of their philosophy.
When I was trying to complete the True Gallery in Ib I was still in the mindset of the original version, not the remake, where you cant just talk to garry and wound up getting the "together forever" ending set up for 4 hours straight as I desperately tried to keep garry alive in order for him to read a singular painting in the dark room. now i loved ib before this but after that i gained a newfound appreciation for garry specifically. Anyway an rpg maker horror game i recommend playing through (even if on your own time) is Prom Dreams. i'd say what it's like but it's a good game to get into spoiler free. though i will say it came out in 2016 and is by far one of my favorite games. i recommend exploring the school a lot and interacting with all of the npcs, if you do play it.
Out of all the horror games from the early 2010s the RPG maker horror games have to be some of my favourites out there. They left a huge impact on me for how unique they were especially with games like Ib and Mad Father.
I think it's the first time i see anybody talking about Stray Cat Crossing. I tried to play it in early teenage years because i loved artstyle (also i still dig mc's outfit), but dropped for some reason. Glad to hear about it now!
Man, I haven't had my itch for horror game essays scratched like this in more than three years. Very fond of your content and hoping to see more of it in the future ❤
I got so excited seeing Ib referenced but then I remembered… Gary… he’s the only one I remember most of all and it showed… with one of ocs! If I could I’d use a cursed sad emoji
I’m hoping that in the future, this guy covers the “Strange Men” Anthology series. It has amazing storylines, and also one of them has a fairy with really big eyes and that’s funny.
I think the scariest thing about Ib is that, once you realize the Gallery itself is a character and ALIVE, it pulling people inside the fabricated world is TERRIFYING. It has an insatiable need to continue growing, hence a child and an ART STUDENT. That's why Mary isn't truly able to escape--the Gallery only has one option with both Ib and Garry dead. And it refuses to stop growing.
*Spoilers, for Witch's House* I remember from the bad end of the Witch's house, if you don't have the knife and let the dad kill Viola (in witch's body), Ellen (in Viola's body) will turn around, and make a motion that looks like she's giggling before leaving to follow the dad. That's the hint you get that there's something else going on.
One thing I noticed you didn't cover in Misao is a secret flashback you can get about the teacher and his backstory, really puts his tragic life as a Valorant player into perspective, assuming its still in the game i think its worth going back to check out.
I never knew that most of these rpgs were remade. That's insane to me since I've only seen the orginal. God i wish they would remake The Witch's House with a good ending! That was just way to damn cruel!!!!! 😫 😩
Horror is scary when you can actually understand the story without having to read various books and examine every single frame of every trailer and promotional material.
1:04:50 ; I haven't played this version of Ib yet but in the classic version (the old one), another outcome of this scene is Ib slapping Garry so hard he snaps out of his delulu episode. You can get this if Ib and Garry are close prior to this scene (so interact with your Garry at all times!). It is questionably one of the scenes I kept aiming for when I was playing the game years ago... besides striving for the true good ending because GOD it took me a long time to get it. Also ahem Mary deserves to be happy too, thank you for listening to my TEDTalk

One thing I've loved about Ib since the very beginning was the music; each scene has the perfect themes to accompany it; this game has a very special place in my heart
The strange man series, Ib, Mad father, Witch's house and so many other shaped my whole childhood and the let's play of these game areactually some of the first thing I have ever watched online. Even though the genre isn't as popular as its peak of UA-cam gaming era, I still think it is one of the best things to have ever happened to UA-cam. Also, I have always like to think Mad Father has a good ending since Dio did say that he will try to stop Aya if she indeed continue her father legacy.
"... a less dark game? ... Stray Cat Crossing" ah yes, the game that made me start crying in the middle of a birthday party and that makes me tear up just by hearing its name. so light. jokes aside, love this game
Something I will say is a huge strength of your essays is the ability to build on jokes both within videos and between them. Makes for some of the more entertaining video essays on yt. At least one of the ones my dumbass has experienced 🙃
Honestly, since Stray Cat Crossing is an artistic game, I don’t think it’s as much of a horror game as it is a surreal puzzle game. I’m glad covered it though. Hadn’t even heard of it till this video came out.
RPGMaker horror is my favorite genre of horror by a mile and I would argue shaped horror games as we know them more than we give credit for. Ib and Ao Oni are some of my earliest experiences in horror and I really hope people continue to pioneer and expand the genre in the future.
Just wanted to say, awesome videos man, I really love your style of editing and narration, I discovered your channel two months ago, and like said, I love the content, keep going, also would be great if you dive deeper into misao or mad father with further analysis or maybe even other RPG maker games.

I've watched this twice... Both in one sitting each time. I just smoke bowls and enjoy the show. Please make more reviews like this and Slay the Princess... I've literally watched that one 10-15 times I'm being absolutely serious.
I always appreciated this genre while I never really enjoyed playing it since gameplay is secondary to story. But it's great that stories big studios would never make had an avenue to be told.
I think an in-depth analysis on Misao and Mad Father would be great. I was obsessed with old RPG maker horror games as a kid so this video was really fun to watch and relive. Plus I would like an explanation as to why fem Aki and male Aki are so different, esp cuz I'm pretty sure fem Aki is part demon or smth, so it's a mystery as to why fem Aki has to possess male Aki to kill when you'd think he'd also be part demon.

Cat has infinite power huh? Can he beat Man from the Aslume tho?
Bald DIO doesn't exist, he can't hurt you.
Ogre:
The best thing about the rpg maker games it that anyone can get into them, imo its easier then learning a coding on unreal or smth.
4:00 bold of you to assume i have anything better to do
Fear & hunger has absolutely consumed my life I’m so glad you included it in the best rpg horrors
YES
Considering the type of horror you seem to enjoy from the first few games mentionned you should totally check out Hello Charlotte (that shares similarities with OMORI), another hidden RPG Maker gem. The first two episodes are free to play, imo the first one isn't particularly interesting but it's still important to check out.
YES i was wondering if someone had suggested HC! Wonderful series, makes me all misty eyed every time i see a playthrough
Btw there’s a preorder for a nendoroid of Ib on goodsmile’s site. I really hope they eventually release some of Aya and Viola/Ellen too
Mary's story still tears at my heart every time.
The witch's house was so traumatizing to me. I'm still sad about it today! 😭
I would really like to say that Aya is only killing patients with terminal illnesses to give them peace and is a doctor doing good deeds
It’s still not the BEST reasoning, but given the setting doesn’t really suggest that Aya has access to modern technology, she’s actually a pretty empathetic person/doctor
I know I said it during the stream, but the entire point of the remake and Blood Mode is to show that despite her ENTIRE FAMILY worked against her, Aya turned out okay through her shared trauma with Maria
That doesn't really justify it at all though. Disregarding a disabled person's autonomy and will to live to kill them 'to give them peace' is straight up eugenics.
Also, if I end up being the PakPak Fandom's Aya Defender guy, at least I get to see a bunch of my stream comments in the video
So yeah, I feel pretty proud of that non-cool thing lmao
Hey I remember you in the stream yelling about how she wasn't like her father!
Far from it, really
I’m mostly comparing her to her father, who we all agree is a heinous monster.
I never realized the girl with the swirly glasses in Misao was Aya, this is better than Infinity War.
I love Ib. I will talk for hours about how the music has stuck with me so hard. Gary is genuinely one of my favorite characters of all time.
I *NEED* an in-depth gallery of Mad Father and Misao! Games are peak especially with PB!
Wonderful as always!!!! And I saw that fear and hunger shoutout 👀 0:47
Out of all the horror games from the early 2010s the RPG maker horror games have to be some of my favourites out there. They left a huge impact on me for how unique they were especially with games like Ib and Mad Father.
I remember PewDiePie playing Mad Father and a year ago, I played the old version of Mad Father for free and It's still holds up to this day.
OH AND IT HAS BOSS BATTLES
LIKE BOSS BATTLES THAT ARENT RPG BATTLES, LIKE REAL TIME STUFF
Ao oni is like tattletale very popular then it disappeared
I think the scariest thing about Ib is that, once you realize the Gallery itself is a character and ALIVE, it pulling people inside the fabricated world is TERRIFYING. It has an insatiable need to continue growing, hence a child and an ART STUDENT. That's why Mary isn't truly able to escape--the Gallery only has one option with both Ib and Garry dead. And it refuses to stop growing.
*Spoilers, for Witch's House*
I remember from the bad end of the Witch's house, if you don't have the knife and let the dad kill Viola (in witch's body), Ellen (in Viola's body) will turn around, and make a motion that looks like she's giggling before leaving to follow the dad.
That's the hint you get that there's something else going on.
One thing I noticed you didn't cover in Misao is a secret flashback you can get about the teacher and his backstory, really puts his tragic life as a Valorant player into perspective, assuming its still in the game i think its worth going back to check out.
I clicked this video for Stray Cat Crossing. That game makes me tear up every time, and I think more people should play it.
I like that PakPak think we will see the videos on multiple setting.
Just one sitting BABYYYYYY~~~
Also, Ib will forever be my fave. FOREVER.
Have you seen "Cat in the Box" yet? It's by far my favorite rpg-maker horror game. I hope you may cover it someday!
That summation of OMORI actually is a perfect explanation of the entire game's story.
I'm calling child protective services, how dare you threaten to beat pakerweight!
Would love to see a full vid on Mad Father. Your vids are always fun to watch after all
1:04:50 ; I haven't played this version of Ib yet but in the classic version (the old one), another outcome of this scene is Ib slapping Garry so hard he snaps out of his delulu episode. You can get this if Ib and Garry are close prior to this scene (so interact with your Garry at all times!). It is questionably one of the scenes I kept aiming for when I was playing the game years ago... besides striving for the true good ending because GOD it took me a long time to get it.
Also ahem Mary deserves to be happy too, thank you for listening to my TEDTalk
whens black souls
shoutout to the youtuber marsh (whos usually a atlus/SMT youtuber but also jumping into rpg maker for halloween) for making me more interested in "where the fuck did you find this" rpg maker horror games like GU-l and The Peret em Heru.
god, it sso nice seeing you gain such a following, got here around your first spookys video and . i dont know. its just nice seeing someone do the thing they like
8:22 hearing the words "I may be an 11-year-old girl" in your deeper-than-average voice is really funny to me
good coverage of these games, glad to see someone hit all the RPG maker classics in one video
Hey Pakpak, the roses fading after an hour passes is because of how ""The Witch"", being sick, will eventually die whether you actually went in the house or not. It is not about the magic fading.
PLEASE do a deeper dive into Mad Father and Misao, id consume the video a LOT. Alternatively, would LOVE to see you cover OFF by mortis ghost
I love Ib, definitely my favorite of those 5 games. But I also love Witch's House, getting the true ending for the first is really a punch to the gut. I'd also recommend the game Blank Dream a fantastic story with some great puzzles too.
Okay so I'm relatively new to your channel right? I absolutely adore how your essay sona clips are done with Monster Hunter machinima. It's really clever! MonHun has a lot of aesthetic options but I never really considered them beyond ingame selfies.
i allways feel so bad for mary.... that's a just a child, she seems around Ib's age.. she might nto even realise she's killing Gary by destroying the rose, just thinking it will simply let her leave.. the real villian is the painter or what ever entity made that world
Seeing Fear and Hunger mentioned is amazing, as I am currently very obsessed with it.
misao and pissballs the best yuri there ever was
edit: i forgot to compliment you (pakpak) for this excellent video and to tell you that making this a series where you explore more rpg maker horror would be phenomenal! one of my favourites that... i don't know if it /really/ counts as horror but does in my heart?? is called OFF, and I think it would be funny ot hear you talk about it because your humor is peak. Also doing a full analysis on mad father and misao, or any of these, would be fantastic as well! don't overwork yourself though
Oh holy shit, this came out in time to watch on my lunch. Thanks for covering my childhood nostalgia, PakPak.
with pakpak's storytelling id love to see a darkwood or coffin of andy and leyley playthrough. Great vid love it, foxy jumpscare scared my cat somehow.
Glad to see these are from the updated versions of these games cause I played all the originals so it’s nice to see updates to the stories, I’m updated on Misao and Mad Father but not the others.
Another gem of an analysis channel, subscribed
I was so glad to see some of this games being released on steam, I have a bunch of my childhood favorites now! Some of them received an amazing glow up
you dont realize how hype i am to see this lol, to watch all but one of these live and now relive it. gonna be good
Bold of you to assume that I will be watching this over multiple days instead of in one sitting.
Wish IB had an ending where all 3 of them getting out
I hope you decide to dive into more RPG Maker Horror games! There are so many lovely games to behold and many more traumatizing memories to make. :3
One thing I've loved about Ib since the very beginning was the music; each scene has the perfect themes to accompany it; this game has a very special place in my heart
Great video. Humor was good, and the nostalgia of seeing all these games again was nice. Idk what else to say so I’m commenting for the algorithm.
I remember I watched mark and pewdiepie play through of those games
"... a less dark game? ... Stray Cat Crossing" ah yes, the game that made me start crying in the middle of a birthday party and that makes me tear up just by hearing its name. so light. jokes aside, love this game
What happens in that game?
51:37 the moment i heard the theme i got shivers 😭😭 its so nostalgic, i love ib so much, deserves all the love it gets and more
This games were the only ones I could play in my old computer so I really enjoy going back to them
Something I will say is a huge strength of your essays is the ability to build on jokes both within videos and between them. Makes for some of the more entertaining video essays on yt. At least one of the ones my dumbass has experienced 🙃
mogeko castle, lisa and off is also good
I'd love to see a more in-depth video on Misao and Mad Father. I've always loved the two and I'd be really great to have a deep dive done by PakPak
Honestly, since Stray Cat Crossing is an artistic game, I don’t think it’s as much of a horror game as it is a surreal puzzle game.
I’m glad covered it though. Hadn’t even heard of it till this video came out.
i’ve been watching you since the tattletale video and you’ve never disappointed pls keep making these for the next decade
RPG maker horror games always hold a special place in my heart, I wish there's more people talking about cell of empireo tho
RPGMaker horror is my favorite genre of horror by a mile and I would argue shaped horror games as we know them more than we give credit for. Ib and Ao Oni are some of my earliest experiences in horror and I really hope people continue to pioneer and expand the genre in the future.
End of video comment:
Please cover more of these! I'd love to see you play the Strange Men anthology.
Just wanted to say, awesome videos man, I really love your style of editing and narration, I discovered your channel two months ago, and like said, I love the content, keep going, also would be great if you dive deeper into misao or mad father with further analysis or maybe even other RPG maker games.
Seeing old games I watched someone play redone to be HD and fancy makes me feel a type of way.
Ib is one of my favorite games, honestly the ending with Mary becoming Ib’s sister is my favorite and I love seeing Mary happy.
Misao x Pissballs
Pleaseee more misao and mad Father the story is intriguing
oh god the mom. my friends a twitch streamer and loves rpg maker horror, they play them on stream all the time, chat really liked the mom. i bring this up all the time. chat still simps for the mom.
0:46 Fear & Hunger video someday? 👀
