스님이 장삼을 입고 서있는 모습의 서울 인왕산 선바위 Odd-looking rock

서울 서대문구 인왕산에는 기이한 모습의 바위가 우뚝 서있는데 그 모습이 마치 스님이 장삼을 걸치고 서있는 모습이라 하여 선바위라 불리고 있습니다. 이 선바위는 그 특이한 형상으로 인해 오랫동안 민간 신앙의 대상이 되어왔습니다. 특히, 자식 없는 사람이 이 바위에 빌면 효험이 크다고 하여 정성을 드리는데 작은 돌을 붙이면 효험이 더욱 크다고 하여 작은 돌을 문질러서 붙인 자국이 많이 남아 있는데 이를 붙임바위라고도 불립니다. 일제가 남산 꼭대기에 있던 국사당을 선바위 곁으로 옮기게 한 뒤로 더욱 선바위에 대한 신앙은 무속신앙과 밀착하게 되고 국사당은 무신당으로서 굿을 행하는 곳이니 바로 옆에 있는 선바위와 복합적으로 신앙의 대상이 되었습니다. 암석에 흘러 내리듯이 난 구멍은 수직 또는 수평 절리를 따라서 빗물과 공기 중의 염분이 함께 들어가 차별침식을 일으켜 크고 작은 풍화혈로 만들어진 것으로 해석됩니다. 매연 등과 같은 대기오염 물질에 의한 빗물의 강산성화와 미세분진의 고농도화로 풍화는 물론 표면을 검게 물들게 하는 현상이 더욱 빨라졌을 것으로 추정됩니다.
