John Smith is such an underated Disney love interest. He starts as an actual villain but he lets go of his “superiority” and his pride and lets himself learn from Pocahontas. She teaches him to see nature as something beautiful and alive rather than just profitable. He learns to see the natives as humans and not just savages. He was willing to abandon his country and coulture to stay there. And he would’ve if he wasn’t literally dying.
And I know the true history behind this didn’t happen like that. But every disney fairytale was based on some horryfing story that they remade for kids. So we should judge the movie for what it is.
And lastly, the same people saying Pocahontas should have married Kocoum are the same that would have defended her if she was a princess in an european castle that didn’t want to marry some nobleman her father chose for her. It’s the same thing: an arranged marriage. So no, she shouldn’t have to marry a guy she doesn’t love. Even if you think he’s hotter than John Smith 😂

You can look it up on UA-cam, but in the scene towards the end where Pocahontas goes to see John Smith in the tent, there was originally a song called If I Never Knew You. The entire song is about how if they hadn't met one another they wouldn't know of the differences they have. It's a really beautiful song, but in early screenings they found that kids in the audience were beginning to get restless so to speed things up they cut the song. I felt like the song really added a huge element to the overall story. I have the extended cut of Pocahontas from the 10th anniversary dvd and it incorporates the song back in. It is absolutely one of my favorite Disney songs. Top 3 for sure!

As for the romance, I think its always judged too harshly. It's a disney movie. Nothing else.... Let them fall in love after 8 hours, let the male lead have a shallow reason for doing what's right. Why? Because its a disney movie. That's it. I do wish they would have made it an different concept then Pocahontas and John Smith. There were a lot they could have used, even like Romeo and Juliet but you know.

I will say the music, the animation and some of background art in this movie are some of my fave for sure! But yeahh reason Pocahontas isn't really liked movie (today) is because of how they made her story so whitewashed or a better word- sanitized the hell out of it. The fact they turned her kidnapper/abuser into a love interest and all, tried to spin it in a lesson on racism but pretty much failed in doing so.
Funny lil fun fact is how this movie was done by disney's A team of animators, while they had their B team was working on Lion King thinking their next masterpiece of a film was gonna be Pocahontas meanwhile Lion King became their masterpiece hit xD

@@Abii-s well, although we do not know for sure, it is probably true that when it came to the first law on banning slave trade was for monetary gain since the punishment for it was a fine, but since it was the first ban of slave trade in the world it's still better than any other nation or empire had done before (including african kindoms). But in time it became a point of principle and pride for the British people and British sailors were paid by the British crown per slave they freed.
And when the British empire was at the height of its power they refused to trade with any nation that did not abolish slavery. Understand that this is when slavery had been the norm everywhere in the world since the dawn of civilization.

17:57 I know you said you were already aware of the inaccuracies, but here's just HOW inaccurate this is:
    1. This never happened! John Smith simply misinterpreted a welcoming ceremony.
    2. All of this right here is derived from John Smiths imagination.

Ik the movie is not historically accurate which bothers a lot of people but honestly idc, this is one of my fav Disney movies, I loved it and enjoyed ur commentary😁 for those who get upset abt it not being accurate I feel like if u know the real story there’s no harm in enjoying the movie which was made for entertainment purposes bc accurate or not there is still representation and some truth to the movie. Also it’s a kids movie so ofc Disney wouldn’t make it totally historically accurate and scare kids

    • @strawberryfox8819
      @strawberryfox8819 Рік тому +1

I think it's more so weird that this is the only princess movie where they took real life people and changed history. The problem lies in the fact that it's for kids, cause this leads lots of children who are never taught better to believe that this is the real story of Pocahontas. Disney should've just changed the names, since nothing else is historically accurate.
Like... you can't tell me it's a good idea to take the story of a forcefully kidnapped young girl and turn it into a happy, romanze with her captor into a children's movie.

    • @Abii-s

@@strawberryfox8819 honestly as someone not from America that was obsessed with this film as a kid, I loved it cos it was the only princess in nature, and I loved pocohontas (and John was just there lmao) I feel like kids aren’t actually as critically aware as you think. But I 100% agree that is insane to put a real life person and complex story in a kids film, and then change everything about it. At least they made the villan a coloniser lmfao

😎👍 I wouldn't call this the MOST underrated Disney animated musical of the 1990s. That honor definitely goes to "James And The Giant Peach" (1996) 🍑 ...At least it's mostly animated. The first ten minutes are live-action. I think you would enjoy it. I don't know how much of an institution that book, (or for that matter Roald Dahl in general) is these days in the UK, but all of us Americans of a certain age had to read it when we were in elementary school. Disney did a fine job of adapting it to the big screen. Like "The Princess And The Frog," it's full of catchy and bouncy Randy Newman tunes.

The representation this movie gave was huge, and remains so. Instead of shitting on a Disney movie from ‘95 we should be asking why there is still no true representation.

This film holds special place in my heart. My God mother bought this VHS for me as birth day when I was kid. I still love this film, albeit historically completely wrong (still when film hs Mel Gibson and Christian Bale as voices, film does have some redeeming factors imho), I never watched any Disney film to learn history for that matter (that´s why I worn out my library card as to scour all possible history books in local library before I was 16). I consider this film of part of Disney-verse where animals can talk and play instruments, one of the best Jazz singer is bear and some of the best piano players are cats, where mouses fly across world to save to the day, or where mouse is the greatest detective.

Kocoum wasn’t her friend. He was a guy she didn’t know that well, who she didn’t vibe with personality wise, who her father wanted her to marry, and who felt entitled to her because of that. Kinda felt to me like toxic masculine entitlement. If he wasn’t native would you really root for him and Pocahontas to be together?
