Steph plays as much defense as anyone in the league... and that's NO ONE! No one plays defense when teams are putting up 90+ shots per game. Defense is taking away possessions... period. Hoping the 90 shots per game doesn't go in is NOT defense... as "Hope" is not a defensive strategy.
What is defense? Blocking shot attempts, Forcing turn-overs, Taking a Charge and Stealing the Ball. Steph led the league in steals in 2016, and is always towards the top of the list in steals... That's defense. In 2016, Steph had more steals than the next guy with a combination of both Shot Blocks & Steals. He should have been the defensive player of the year, but ignorant bias by sports media talking heads prevented it.
Nobody has tilted the floor like Curry...ever

Jordan couldn't be stopped. Curry doesn't give his defender a chance to defend him cause he shoots the 3 while the defense is waiting for the offense to run a play. Shooting the 3 is the least basketball shot.

All imma say is, if someone in the 90s went to the NBA Finals 6 times and won 4 championships, (3 being against Jordan himself) in the same era as Michael Jordan, there wouldn’t be much hesitation to put that player in the GOAT debate..
But for 2 of those they had Hakeem as a teammate. If you’re looking for 90s equivalences and the other one pippen and Rodman were both hurt. Not as impressive as you think it is

We've seen this many times over. If there was no merit to Shaq bringing it up, then why are there debates? Why are there some on T.V who also say Steph belongs in the conversation? Why are WE now conversating on it?
I can't say I would ever put Curry above any of the top 4 players in history, but Curry has done enough to be put in the conversation. I think you can belong there especially if there were elements to your game that has never been done before and those elements was the main factor in winning multiple chips. Ive got Curry as the 2nd best player in his era, right behind LeBron and just ahead of Durant. He's somewhere around the 8th greatest player to ever play to me. To others he's higher and lower. All of it is conversation

Curry has earned the right to be in the Goat conversation. There is No one today that creates fear in opponents as he does. Best shooters of all time, four championships, changed the way the game is played today. The real Goat is Bill Russell. Eleven Championships, two as player coach, all while playing in a difficult racial period. He could have led the league in scoring in he had to. Finals MVP trophy is named after him. The reason that he is left off the list is because he played years ago.

His defense is above average for his position. People talk bad about his defense, but it's him being small. He's very solid. Now it's hard to do as much running around as he does on offense and play great defense at the same time.

What Shaq said was more about Curry being included in conversations of the very best in NBA history overall! Shaq knows MJ is the GOAT and who are the others right behind. Hes Curry is the greatest shooter in the history of the game but even when praising him, people act as if that’s the only thing he can do offensively when the man can create his own shot when he drives to the basket, when he goes to the free throw line and finding the open man! That’s why he’s ascend in the game!
As I always said, he might not be the all around best player, BUT he is ONE among those best player in NBA history. Nobody in NBA history has able to drawn a defender from half court at the very start of the regulation on a regular season. You have to put curry in top 5 to me at least.. Also he’s not nowhere as near a bad defender as the media keeps saying . He’s much improved in his defense and size. He’s a good team defender well above average off the ball as well. That’s a lazy take about him having no defense. The hand-check era is totally irrelevant in the Steph Curry comparison. Hand-check was against semi=stationary players... a guy trying to back-down a defender. Steph is constantly moving, and when he get's the ball off a screen, he's shooting it within .09 seconds. When he's going to the rim for layups, he's facing his defender, using his dribble combination to get them off balance, then going to the basket for the layup. Steph is doing any post-up plays. So hand checking is irrelevant when talking about Steph.

Hand-checking was NOT design to allow defenders to “help force u where I want u and marking it harder for u to shoot” Hand-checking was simply to allow the defender to stay connected to the ball-handler. In the 60s & 70s, we wanted to place a premium on defense. As in every other sport, defense is design to prevent scoring... Soccer, Hockey, volleyball, etc.
Defense in basketball should prevent the ball from going towards the rim, so things like Steals, Shot-Blocking, Taking a Charge, causing a turnover, all takeaway possessions and prevent a ball going towards the Rim during a possession. The early Rules felt if the defender could stay connected to the ball handler, he had a better chance of successfully defending on each possession.
The NBA marketing folks determined later-on that scoring was helpful in bringing attention to the sport. The Rules were change incrementally along the years following that determination to mostly benefit scoring.
Back to your comments: Hand-Checking would be irrelevant and have no impact on Steph Curry’s movement without the ball. Because grabbing him or pushing him as he relocates on the floor, without the ball, would be considered illegal contact under the Hand-Checking Rules. Were there some grabbing and pushing going on back then? Certainly! That’s the challenge of being a Referee... it became very subjective. I may whistle a guy reaching out to grab onto a moving player, while another Referee may overlook it.
Hand-Checking would have no effect on a guy crossing half court and pulling up for a 3-point shot... None!
Steph would have done well in the hand check error. He practiced with his dad’s teammates. And he takes a level of physicality with hits in today’s game that doesn’t get calls from the refs. That’s why he put on weight. So he can play through all the contacts and when they wrap him up. There was a whole lot of hand checking in the Celtics series in the finals that wasn’t being called and Steph still played through it

Steph is feared on offense but no one fears his defense. He’s usually targeted by the opposing team on that end. If you gonna be in GOAT talk you gotta be great on both ends at your peak. They did a great job surrounding him with guys that could defend. That was another key to their success with his offense because they could hide Steph on defense.
Kareem didn’t win 5 of his 6 championships until Magic was drafted.. but Magic always gets omitted 😂

I grew up in Chicago in the 90's and recorded every Bulls playoff game on VHS LoL. I have been watching Basketball ever since and the biggest difference that I see with MJ is that players feared him on the court. He was almost able to do whatever he wanted during a possession. He probably could have scored every point in the game if he really wanted to, but he was so committed to improving every player on his team to greatness. You can talk skyhook all day, yet Jordan's fade away was nearly unstoppable. Michael Jordan not only changed the game of Basketball... he also changed the World.

Steph has been the biggest beneficiary of the changing of the game. The NBA wanted more 100 point games & less 85 point games. So spacing of the floor & 3 point shooting was emphasized. Steph has had the beat skill set to suit that type of play.

Steph is definitely GOAT level. The only reason we weren't having that debate is because of false narratives. Steph is the most underrated superstar of all time and it's not even close.
Wade played with prime Lebron and said Steph is on that level and to put him on Mt. Rushmore. Y'all forget Lebron got wrecked by Kawhi and later the Mavs even when he had his superteam with Wade and Bosh. Also like Stephen A. just noted, Lebron was dominating the East which was largely acknowledged to be the weaker conference for a long period of time.

When Lebron played against Steph, he already had over 10 years to develop as a player. Steph had only really started developing starting in 2013 because of previous injuries and Monte Ellis was the main guy until leaving in 2012. Steph vs Lebron started in 2014-2015 season.
Steph literally changed the META of basketball. Probably only people who have caused rule changes (e.g. Wilt) and can rival this. This is an objective accomplishment in a different STRATOSPHERE FAR GREATER than any subjective nominations (1st team, mvps, etc). Everyone needs to stop sweeping this under the rug like it's just another little fact.
And much more can be said (e.g. only player to win multiple chips without another top 75 player besides Kobe, etc).
So Steph is definitely GOAT level and will be properly recognized/appreciated when he's gone and people better understand more important metrics/accomplishments.

Glad they started the conversation. In my opinion, MJ or Curry is the conversion vs Majic Johnson or LeBron James. Lebron James didn't change the games. The cross pollination of positions has blurred perception. Defense is what Micheal Jordan did better than ALL the players in the goat conversation. Lebron James is exceptional because He's a freak of nature whose B-Ball IQ creates team chemistry but in my opinion the EURO-STEP rule change is what helped LeBron cause he like to go through players not around them like Micheal Jordan but the Euro-Step added(In 2009) a dimension to Lebron game needed for him.
I know that there’s a tendency for people to use the wrong words but Steph is the very example of talent. His skills (shooting and handles) are his talent and they are at the very top of the tree.
Magic is the greatest! 13 year career, 3 time MVP, 9 final appearances, 5 chips! He beat a lot of NBA legends those years and a tough physical era.

@@robocop581given he only played 1 and a half years as a BENCHWARMER just after getting drafted, missing two whole seasons due to injury and working his way up to be an all-star for two whole years after getting back. . .24ppg as a career average is pretty impressive. It is very high given the circumstances of the early years of his career.
Also he really is the greatest Shooter cause he jumped from number 200 and something in the 3-pointers list to top 15 in just 3 years, honestly, I don't think any of us could overcome the adversity he did and achieve those stats😅
@@2cents250Pretty dull take, MJ was the go-to guy for the Bulls just after getting drafted back in the 80s. Being the only person who could record over 15 points on the team at the time, he naturally took on most of the offensive load for the Bulls and he was winning a scoring title almost every single year.
The story is different for Curry who was on the bench for most of the early years of his career, also being riddled with injuries, he barely played to be honest. Whereas, from 2014 until today, there's no way you really believe Curry's offense is not great😅 How can you say his shooting is not good? I think we're now just hating on the guy

MJ was not as offensively gifted as Steph. Steph can score like no one else. Jordan missed a lot and took a lot of shots and lower fg% but was all around so good, with dpoy awards. Steph just dominated so much on offense he can put himself on a top 5 list. Bron and Kobe in my opinion are not top 5. They are not the best at anything. Don’t have the awestruck effect that Jordan magic and Steph have on people.

No. Not at all. There have been many seasons where Steph is either not the best on his team and/or in the league. How can a guy who's had AT BEST 1 season of the best player in the NBA be in the GOAT conversation ? Also, he plays no defense. Only Magic is a guy who ranks in that esteem with playing absolutely no defense
1) Curry has been the best in the league for more than 1 season.
2) If defense is a mandatory requirement as you suggest, then Lebron was only elite defensively for 5 years which is only 25% of his career and needs to be removed from any goat conversations while allowing Duncan, Kobe and Olajuwon to leapfrog him. Add Kareem and Wilt to that list.
