Azarenka. I at least believe with Konta there was some trauma and Andreescu was somewhat injured. Azarenka had nothing wrong with her and 100% took that break to keep Sloane from coming back.

That‘s right - but the main reason Konta lost her nerves was the abuse the British team experienced during that Fed Cup. It was an inglorious scandal and widely reported on how Ilie Nastase and unfortunately many of the Romanian fans behaved. I love Simona Halep, though - she really did her best to deescalate during that weekend.

Well Serena doesn’t really go for people at the net a lot, but when she does they suck it up because it is apart of the game. Even the few people that have gone at Serena at net, she just shrugs it off.

Why is Konta in here. By the time she was on court there had already been a fracas at the team hotel, a smoke grenade thrown, threats made to her life and that of Anne Keothavong who was also threatened with rape, the crowd shouting at Konta so she could not hear, a missile thrown onto the court, taunts made about her recently deceased psychologist and further taunts about her parentage. As a result of his involvement with these (and other) offences Ilie Nastase was banned from Wimbledon for the rest of his life, the only champion ever to be so denied and at least two of the Romanian Fed cup officials have been barred from ever entering the UK. On court tantrums are one thing but to include Jo Konta in this list is a disgrace. You owe her an apology.

@@kefren1322 it's difficult to say no to playing in a team when they need you. I watched that match, as well as GB qualify for that play off spot in Group 1 in Estonia. Konta played all the matches, and the team really did everything they could to progress. Sorana is a very good player and in that moment GB needed their number one player and Konta wanted to play that match as well. She is mentally strong, and got upset from the fact that the Romanian captain joked and made remarks on her psychologist's death, which should not be normal in any sport, let alone tennis.

she retired due to injury in her next match from that clip .... and then essentially didn't play again for 5 months and then played 2 tournaments winning them and then again essentially off for 16 months..

That was a crappy situation, but crowds occasionally get hostile towards one player and show favoritism towards the other. It happened to Martina Hingis often as well. Is that racism also or only when it's convenient to call it racism?

Back in the day, it was a big deal. The french crowd was AWFUL that day and Justine didn't help by lying. Serena had won four slams in a row and there was no reason she shouldn't have won 5 in a row.

RE Konta, was it not Illie Nastasie abusing her? not the crowd... when she said sorry she was apologising for the game finishing and for crying, not for putting it on.
Konta was not acting in this, the crowd were being abusive and constantly interrupting play by being so loud during points. They even went as far as to insult her sports psychologist who recently committed suicide. The Romanian coach Nastase was removed from the arena for abusing the GB players with sexist comments. Before that night he had made a racist comment about Serena and after that match he had abused several British journalists as well. Even the Romanian team was pretty disgusting in the way they handled, reacted to, and defended the situation. Only Niculescu who stepped up as Coach for Nastase, and Halep who took the microphone and asked the crowd to be quiet and have respect showed any decency from the Romanian side. If you think otherwise you seriously lack brain cells.

Definitely Henin. Sometimes the best actresses are the most believable ones...and because Justine wasn't over-the-top ridiculous, she got away with some shady sh*t on tour. Rumor is she admitted to using the "hand incident" purposely to her advantage in that match and that she called a ball out against Clijsters in the 2004 AO final that she knew was in.

It wasn’t a rumor, she admitted to both on international television. Henin admitted to throwing her hand up when Serena was looking at the ball to throw her off. Henin said she wanted to humble the Williams Sisters because they were so dominant and appeared arrogant. Henin then admitted to cheating clijsters to throw her off and get an edge. This is why I’ll never respect her.

Serena either saw Justin putting her hand up after she served (in which case it didn’t affect her serve at all) or she saw her hand up but rudely chose to serve anyway and when it went into the net, chose to make a fuss about it. No wonder the crowd booed her.
@@Qacc6 you sound really stupid. You can tell based on the video that Henin waited until Serena tossed the ball and was looking up at the ball to put her hand up. It does not matter whether if it affected her serve or not, the rules are clear, Serena should have received another first serve. Hell, even in an alternate universe, if Serena did see the hand and served anyway, Serena still would be entitled to another first serve regardless. Serena had every right to be upset, and she didn’t get as upset as she could have. Serena didn’t deserve any booing. Henin, the umpire, and the crowd were dead wrong.

That whole Fed Cup round was unfortunately overshadowed by abusive comments from Romanian fans and mostly the disgusting sexist behavior and harassment by Ilie Nastase. The Andreescu clip being on here doesn't even make sense she literally retired from her next match right after this with a rotator cuff injury (right shoulder) and was out of 4 months.
True. But there is 2 option. You can play or you can't. If you have to call the physio every 3 game, than you can't play. You should retire and let the other players move on... This injury protocol does not make sense anymore.

Wait what about Sharapovs vs Ivanovic at Cincinnati 2014 Semifinal. “Check her blood pressure” 😂. I don’t fully recall but I believe Ivanovic faked being injured or sick and took a medical time out but she was not injured and was playing very well. And I think she did that to throw off Maria and it worked. Ivanovic was not dramatic but the match was super dramatic and also the part when Maria said that to her team.

They shouldnt have susspended play but rather shouldve given the match to the Romanian. Yes what Konta was going through is tough but if you cant continue then you simply end the match not pause it. Its tought what shes going through but if she cant continue thats her business to deal with not the opponents.
That right shoulder was the reason Andreescu played only one match between March and August. But as long as you're satisfied that it wasn't bothering her enough here, I guess that's what counts.
