  • Several years ago we had the opportunity to fly fish at two of the most remote destinations in Ontario: The Sutton River & Pym Island. Both of these locations are run through Hearst Air Service. The Sutton River is world-famous for the outstanding population of big brook trout it possesses (over 70 miles of slow meandering river which you travel down by canoe), while Pym Island is growing in popularity for those that like to fish for big pike on topwater flies in a river! On the Pym you drift down river and cast mice patterns and poppers to back bays, weedbed edges, etc...and have tremendous topwater takes by pike up to 50 inches long! Great video with lots of information and action!

    Watching how Colin handles the fish after netting is a reflection on how much he cares for the individual fish and overall resource.

    I lived near Hearst . Kapuskasing On. There's many places up north to catch specks but Sutton river is King for big huge mice snaking trout . Beautiful char . Great video and I now have to make mice .

    Thirty years ago fishing a small creek in Montana I landed a huge (for the creek) 14" brookie. Protruding from its maw was a snake like tail. It was a mouse. It changed my thinking and resulted in many explosive surface takes from many trout species. I love it.

    Really awsome
    I was a river guide for Dave Duncan and sons in SW Alaska for summers 2006-12, the mouse for giant leopard rainbows was my favorite thing to do up there. Chosen and goodnews rivers, best trout fishing i have ever done. And i have lived in Montana for most of my life.

    21:02 That doesn't look like a rainbow but then I spent most of my life fishing the Sierra Nevada Mountains and a fish that size is rare for a Rainbow but not a Brown. Awesome white tips on the fins, remind me of the Brook Trout I used to catch. Awesome Video, thanks for sharing! Was absolutely beautiful!

      I would recommend a five or six weight rod with a floating line (WF) matched to a nine foot leader. The trout were not leader shy so used 10 pound tippet or better. Thanks

    Hi Guys, could you tell us the name of that topwater Pike fly that you said Brad Bowen created (with the black foam block head)? I thought you had said ‘swing hips’ on the video but I can’t find any record of it anywhere. It also looks like a fly that you had called a quarter chicken a couple of years back in another quick episode. Thanks For all the great videos though… It’s really helping out during these long days!

    • @newflyfisher
      @newflyfisher  4 роки тому

      Brad changed the name to "Thunder Chicken". The 1/4 chicken dinner is the other fly. Two other patterns we've had successful with is Stu Thompson's "Weedmans Slider" which is an excellent topwater fly for pike and musky, especially in black, black/orange and chartreuse. The other is large Murdich Minnows in white/red, perch pattern and tan/white. The key is to have a "rattle" tied to the shank of the hook which helps the fly be heard by predators. Hope this helps

    Great video, those little mice also work plenty of places other than Canada. Both Rainbows and Browns eat them just like Bass do. Rebel lures make small barbless hard body Pop-R baits that cast easier than big deer hair flies and last much longer. There is simply a ton of small minnows, soft body frogs and micro hard baits you can cast fine on an 8-weight or larger fly rod that simply work. If you ever tied deer hair much you will quickly realize they take a long time to make and deer hair is messy to use. I understand using natural materials is the traditional method however, I see no reason not to use lures that last longer and work the same. The same big brown you see sipping tiny mayflies will also crush a mouse. There is certainly no mistake when you get a strike. You proved that, I laughed every time one those big trout smashed your mouse because of the shocking sounds coming from your voice. One thing I know, Trout don’t care if the lure is made of wood, plastic, hair or feathers but you are the only one that might.

      Totally agree with everything you have stated. My favourite mouse pattern is now made of foam and it has caught some nice browns, especially towards dark! Thanks again for the great feedback

      Fly tying is at least 70% of the fishing .... most tyers don't care what fish do to their flies ... you can always make more. I hope I never have to use the things you talk about .... that would mean my fishing days are over. Just my two cents worth.

    • @newflyfisher

      Good question, right now it is $4500 Canadian to fly to the sutton and take a canoe trip down the river. It is a 3 hour or so flight from Hearst. Many people drive to Hearst, stay overnight, then fly-in to the river. You bring your own food and gear, the trip is either seven days or ten days...same price for both. You have 70 miles of river to canoe. Call Melanie with Hearst Air and she can tell you more. They are fully booked for 2020 but they may have room in 2021. They limit how many people can go down the river. Hope this helps!

      There is actually many mice in the region (sub-arctic tundra) and the trout are used to eating them. But like anywhere, there is also hatches, baitfish, and much more they eat.
