    Fantastic to see all those beautiful pictures, and to see so many places that I have worked at the same time. I was a relayer / welder for many years based at edgehill Liverpool.

      Yes worked all over the network. In my later years I was a level crossing inspector so got to see lots of things that I never had the time to see . Loved my life on the railway, I followed on from my father and now my son is also on the railway. 👍🏻😊👍🏻

    Fabulous set of photos. Wonderful to see, bringing back memories for me of when I was a kid, and the trains were more like these types. I never know for sure which ones were which, but I’m talking of 1974 to the mid 80s, whatever units were running between the wirral and Liverpool during that period. I just loved the sights, sounds and even the smells of the trains and the underground back then. The rattle of the train, the fabric seats, the flickering lamps, the wooden panels in the carriages, etc. The modern trains may be more efficient, cleaner, quieter etc, and perhaps the memory cheats, but I’d love to experience the 70s units and atmosphere of the trips back then. Thanks for these photos.

      Thanks for the comments. Your memories mirror mine. I too used to enjoy trips on the underground. Only I used to travel the opposite direction. Getting on at the old central underground before the loop. More often for trips to New Brighton. I well remember whilst sat on the return train at New Brighton the way the lights would dim then suddenly brighten up again. I now know this because somewhere on the line a train was accelerating. Although I thought the new loop & link was great I miss the old "mersey" underground

      @@Merseywail brilliant mate! New Brighton, wow, depending when you went, an experience, one way or another. In the very old days it looked stunning. 70s to 90s it looked, run down? but when ive been recently a lot has been done to clean up the sea and river front, bars, restaurants, etc. If it gained the funding for a new tower and a pier for the mersey ferry loop, it would be a tourist honeypot again.....and yes, those flickering lamps, i didnt know, it depended on how much elec was getting through! a passing train etc. Great! cheers.

      @@THIRV it has turned round in recent years. Doubt it will ever as good as it was in it's hayday. I remember it mostly the late 60s early 70s. It lost a lot when the pier & ferry went

    • @THIRV
      @THIRV 2 місяці тому +1

      @@Merseywail absolutely. We can only dream of a new pier and the return of the ferry. It would bring tourists back, via the ferry. And a new tower would be the icon of Merseyside. But of course, it’ll never happen either as you say mate.

    Excellent presentation of these electric trains. On one of our 'Days out' we would get the Diesel train from Huyton to Lime Street, then get dragged across town to Exchange station from where we would get the electric train to Southport. As a young lad I always preferred Exchange station with those hydraulic buffers and the shape and colour of the electric trains, and of course the sliding doors which I thought where great, better than the slamming of doors of the other trains. After a few hours in Southport we'd have to return home with sand in our socks and tired legs.
    This video is the best I've seen..!

      Many thanks for your kind comments. I grew up with these trains. When I was younger I used to think the 1950/60s DMUs were older cause of their slam doors. Am now involved with the restoration of the preserved class 502 at Burscough.

      @@Mitch-Hendren Hi Mitch, yes we did that too, walk from Lime Str to the Pier Head and get the ferry over to New Brighton. Those big ferries crushing the tyres on the dock, and the gangplank clattering down. And once it got going you could really smell the salty sea air. New Brighton was great, a proper resort for Day trippers. The miniature railway and the indoor fair and the smell of Candyfloss. A sandwich and a flask of tea on the beach.... what more could you ask !

      Brought up in Birkenhead (Rock Ferry) I remember these trains. As a kid the difference between the Wirral trains and those running from Exchange was the 'Dalek' appearance of the one's we took to Southport, when New Brighton wasn't exotic enough for our family.

  • @timspooner59
    @timspooner59 3 роки тому +6

    Almost 60 years ago i used to get these trains from southport to crosby to go school. After that from birkdale to exchange as i worked just behind town hall.

      I used to travel on them from Seaforth and Litherland to Formby or Southport. We regularly used the Wirral ones to New Brighton. Luckily examples of both the Wirral and Southport line trains have been preserved

    Are there any of these trains in a museum please

    • @Merseywail
      @Merseywail  2 роки тому

      Not in a museum as such. The preserved class 502 is currently undergoing restoration at the premises of the Merseyside transport Trust at Burscough Lancashire. The preserved class 503 was at the museum site at the old Hornby warehouse in Margate. Sadly its recently been moved to an outdoor site down south somewhere. The 502 was recently on display to the public at the Merseyside transport Trusts open day, where it was named in honour of John Eccles. John was pivotal in preserving of the 502 back in 1980

      I have seen a report this week that the current owners of the 503 are going to scrap it unless it is bought off them in the very near future. It is in a terrible state and they can't afford to store it, let alone work on it.

      @Merseywail  8 місяців тому

      Very sorry you didn't like it. This was my very first & admittedly certainly not the best. It was compiled using the 'built in' windows editor The 'fake clapping' music was also part of the same editor. Another commenter asked me what it was as they wanted to use it themselves, so it's not disliked by everyone. As for some of the pictures being out of focus. I could only work with what I had & had permission to use. Obviously nothing I could do if they were out of focus to begin with. UA-cam is a learning curve & no one is perfect & we all make mistakes.

    • @Merseywail

      The logo was to represent the integration of bus & rail that Merseyside PTE wanted to achieve. It also incorporates 69, the year that MPTE came in to being. It has been described as a barbed wire necklace, or more distastefuly as a swastika
