Unreleased 13spd SRAM Red XPLR on Valtteri Bottas' bike at Unbound Gravel

- Valtteri Bottas races F1 cars for a living and gravel bikes for fun - and at Unbound Gravel this year he was on SRAM's as-of-yet unreleased 13-speed Red XPLR group.
Like all SRAM-sponsored athletes, he's not at liberty to talk about it yet, but I was able to take a good look, and compare it to the gravel offerings from Shimano and Campagnolo.

For folks asking about the Zipp wheels, I covered them here: New & unreleased bikes & gear at Unbound Gravel 2024

"Just one more gear, bro. I swear, just one more and it'll be all i ever need...."
Wait for the AI powered 10x20 drivetrain that automatically shifts for you. Yes you need all 200 gears for that coffee ride you so desperately need.
So true, I have the Ekar 13s and shift steps feel perfect... except this one spot where it feels like there's a gear missing 😂
Man Valtteri looks to be an awesome human being!
"A bit of car racing" haha legend.
BEN with the TOP25 finish 👏🏿 2nd in age group🎉
Valtteri is more excited about biking than F1 lately. I love to hear a F1 driver say they are going to have another beer. Way to go!
Long term he can achieve wins on his bike when the motor racing professional career ends. It's a relatively short lived career at the top end of any sport but you can get wins in cycling in your 80s due to the age rankings
Cyclist with a F1 hobby
I remember Rosberg saying he gave up cycling to lose half a quilo of muscle in his legs to beat Hamilton by a tenth of a second
So much respect for Bottas
Doesn't surprise me. If I read that F1 drivers had an enema before a race I wouldn't be surprised either@@BostilCensurado
his gravel results are way better than his F1 results. qualifies p18 consistently
@@MarioXcore1 Are we just gonna forget his years racing for Mercedes?
SRAM is taking no prisoners.
Just all our money 😂
And Lachlan.
Bottas is one of my fav F1 drivers since his Willams days
He seems to be making a habit of being spotted on unreleased gear, he was on a new Canyon at Monaco GP.
Bike industry wants to be associated with high profile people I guess it's a win win
So cool to see Valtteri in this video. Wasn't expecting that. More proof of what solid athletes F1 drivers are.
I love it. The hundred was enough. I agree. It was! But what beautiful weather we had.
Valteri is living the dream and a very approachable guy. It doesn't surprise me that SRAM has released a 13spd 1x.
One week he's riding an unreleased aeroad in Monaco, the next he's got an unreleased13 speed groupset. I think this biking thing is good for him if he somehow ends up unemployed at the end of the year.
I was just about to purchase an S-Works Crux with the previous group set, but now I think I'll hold off for a bit. Thank you for the insightful update!
5Dev have manufactured a UDH conversion kit for the current version of the Crux. It costs $179.99 but is sold out at the moment. Maybe an opportunity to save some money by avoiding buying the new Crux with UDH should that be released this year or next year?
@@TheThedynamitekid the 5Dev UDH conversion kit is no longer in production, 5Dev have pulled the pin on this product due to legal issues as far as I understand. It is definitely not available for purchase though as I am a current generation Crux owner and enquired about this last week :(
Looks like maybe those are new ZIPP wheels too. Congrats on a great ride Ben, look forward to your race video.
You’re a humble man Ben, congrats on coming 24th and Valtteri for coming 33rd in the 100. Huge rides. ...It’s a real shame there was no tv coverage of the Unbound events. ...Looking forward to more stories from Unbound from you Ben.
New SRAM Red XPLR, yup it’s got 13 speeds and will be way overpriced for mere mortals if the SRAM Red road group is anything to go by.
I was a few feet away when Ben was talking to Valtteri but I was too starstruck to pay the bike any attention. It looks to me like the cutouts on the Red XPLR chain are smaller than the cutouts on the new Red road chain. I'm weeks away from a new gravel build and I was planning to go mullet but I'm going to slow my roll till we know more about this. I can't afford Red, but if it looks Force or Rival XPLR might have this in 2025 I can use my current groupset on the new frame. I'm especially interested in details on the cassette.
"Valtteri's better half" :D LOL
Hi Ben, love your channel! Congratulations on your great result at the 100 mile race!
Will there be a recap of the unbound event? I somehow cant find anything in detail on youtube.
Cheers
I love this guy. Valterry, go go go 🙂
Looks fun
Good spotting on the 13spd.
I would have not picked up on that.
Imagine how precise that rear hanger has to be now lol. 12spd is enough of a PITA. IYKYK.
New Ben Delaney video… Valtteri Bottas… new XPLR group set… that’s an instant click from me 😂
Stars aligned on that one. 😁
Bottas - what a legend.
did he say classified …or Classified?!
Valtteri is so damn cool!!
Take my money! (I'm broke and could never afford that)
Living his best life
just went to Force AXS 2x on my new road bike after having been Shimano guy for decades. Still not a fan of the FD on there though. Let's just say it might be time to look at this Sram 1x when I get the next gravel bike. Thanks Ben for getting the lowdown.
I have 2 bikes on which I swapped mechanical Ultregra to SRAM Red AXS and the FD shifting isn't nearly as good.
@@NCSWIC17 I just switched my steel, rim brake bike to Sramano: Sram red axs shifters and derailleurs but Shimano 11 speed crank and 12 speed chain and cassette. 52/36 and 34-11. I don't really mind the sram front shifting that much, but maybe having a Shimano crank makes it less bad than having a full sram setup
@@PaganiZondaF650hpits all in the shift ramps and pins on the rings. Shimano patents
Listen up hydration jersey makers - put 2-3x magnets on the hose and mouthpiece and oppositely the jersey. If they do, correct me but the hanging hose is a no go.
You might want to have another look on his first name in the title
@@TheRidewithBenDelaneyyou have an extra a in his first name in your title
@@TheRidewithBenDelaney your title says "Valtteria Bottas' "
Doh!! Thanks for the correction, guys. Stupid typo. I was looking at the description on the back end and not the title. 🤦♂️
I doubt the chainring is 13sp specific. I speculate that the chain is the same as for 12sp (T-Type), and the cog spacing is the same as for 12sp. They can do it because the cassette fits on an XDR freehub, not the XD. It's wider etc etc, and with the Transmission layout, the entire cassette scoots over to the right 2.5mm. Therefore, no need to narrow the cog spacing or the chain.
Good thinking. Will be curious to see the details.
I knew Bottas rode but didn't know he was this dedicated. Clearly thinking cycling post F1 career. Too cool.
Bit more on that wheel set up too please mate.
Hey Ben, another great sneak peek of the future cycling gear. On a different topic, I notched you have chesty style mount for you dji action 4, which chesty is that? I like the setup, and enjoy the prospective when filming rides/races.
Funny guy! In view weeks is EuroBike, i think we will see it there! 13spd transmission sounds awesome for me!
2x13 = Holy Grail.
Is that rear der' mounted by the wheel axle? If so - how does it work when you take off and replace a wheel? I'd guess there is a sort of bolt/nut type system so the axle coming from the left side threads into a sort of nut which is screwed into the right chainstay. So - when you take out the wheel axle the right side nut thing holding the der' stays in place.
I really hope it is compatible with the 12 speed shifters
I have been preferential to Shimano for a while, but this will probably get me to switch for my next gravel bike. At some point you have to innovate and this looks to be a great setup. The 2x di2 grx just announced seems pretty underwhelming to what this may bring to the table, and given the years of wireless development at this point, this will be good
I’m sure Shimano will do the same. They recently filed patent for 13 speed drivetrain, also wireless.
I would be pleasantly surprised if Shimano skip 1x12 electronic on MTB and Gravel and go straight to 1x13 at the same time as SRAM!
@@TheThedynamitekid it appears they knew it was coming, which is why they filed the patent for 13 wireless few months ago. If Eagle performs well, it will kill shimano grx di2 12x. Looks like they’re being forced to introduce 13.
What was the gear range on the cassette? Can't imagine it goes any wider than their current 12spd options so this is just aimed at racers with a narrow cadence tolerance.
Apparently, it’s 10-46 so it’s slightly wider than the current 10-44.
@@SecwetGwiwer Thanks. But not as wide as the 10-52 or whatever their 12spd Eagle options are, so the cadence comment stands.
Shimano specs are out in the wild for there 13 speed, but why stop there why not a 15, 16 or even a 20 speed, Its a bit hilarious at this point. Just a way to sell more needless bits.
I'm convinced the industry is just adding more speeds until they can figure out another marketable way to make successive generations incompatible with each other
@@danjee464just wait until a centrally mounted derailleur in a box or “gearbox” is released to make everyone’s frames obsolete. I can’t see how that doesn’t happen in the medium term as there is surely a limit on the number of cogs that can be fitted to a cassette on a rear wheel and we are approaching that with 13 speeds.
If Shimano can get another cog onto the hg hub then we may see 13 SPD but the problem is it's a major upgrade if they can't. Microspline is the option or a wider hg freehub and redesigned hub. This is going to be a large outlay but it will likely happen on new bikes even at cues level
@@TheThedynamitekidwell see the 2 SPD hubs or a very light gearbox hub. Gearbox hubs are really a good option because it streamlines the front gets rid of the derailleur and you could use a belt drive. Derailleur damage is a real problem for gravel racers it could be a game changer. You just do the oil change at a given mileage
Normal folks are happy with the cost/benefit ratio at 10 speed. After that chains and cassettes require a cocaine habit level of expenditure.
Shimano 105 11-speed is still kinda affordable. Even though already close to double 10 speed prices. 12 speed doubles that again.
More interested in the wheels
whoa !! I didn't realize he was a serious cyclist ! I mean, he looks super-fit (@ 1:21) you could almost mistake him for a UCI road pro !
He’s no slouch on the bike. Dude got second in his age group yesterday.
He has a lot of time in his life between racing F1 so can dedicate himself to cycling to almost the level of a pro cyclist. He's obviously getting free equipment like pro cyclists do so I'm not surprised he'd getting pro cyclist results
SRAM, not "shram."
SRAM is an acronym for Scott, Ray, and Sam, the three original founders of the company. There is no H.
Maybe your badgering to get their products would go better if you can start by removing the H when you pronounce the brand's name. :)
Were those also a set of new Zipp rims?
Can anyone make out the range on that cassette?
10-44 with smaller jumps or bigger range?
10-46, 10-11-12-13 are 1-tooth gaps from what I heard.
What breaks or bends when you crash and don’t have a derailleur hanger to break or bend? The derailleur?
Yes, glad someone commented! The whole point of mech hangers was they were made of softer material than the mech. Small and light enough to carry a spare. Easy to change. So even if you can't bend a damaged one back into shape it's no problem just swap your spare. Making mech hangers stiffer was never an actual engineering problem. They are meant to be like that.
I think the new derailleur is designed to release and fold if it gets impacted. The newer designs are are more inclined
@@glennoc8585 I wouldn't bet on them considering common sense solutions helping customers save money, after all the chainrings on this crank are integrated so if you need to change them you change the power meter too.
Other than 13 speed, is there any difference between this and the other transmissions besides a smaller cage?
At first glance, I can’t see any other differences. We’ll have to see.
How big is that biggest cog? I was about to mullet my Grail CFR, but I am thinking of waiting for this.
In my post-race stupor I neglected to count or look for a label, but Anne-Marije saw an XPLR group with a 46: www.cyclingweekly.com/news/sram-13-speed-axs-xplr-gravel-groupset-spotted-at-unbound-gravel

Ben What was your tire of choice this year racing the 100.
All that coming up in my wrap-up video.
13 gear and Nasa Pricing!
I'll keep my 2X thanks.
Get your paws on that groupset!
Working on it, hoss. Congrats again on the WIN at Unbound's Fundy Hundy! 🏆
What brand of shoes is Bottas rocking?
Can someone tell me what Giro model of Valteri Botas helmet ? And the model of Giro helmet Ben Delaney?? many thanks
Both wearing the aries
It doesn't matter how much the speed you got for gravel racing atleast the legs are there to push, for me 2x is for more efficient drivetrain and more gearing option than 1x.
what tire do you use?
Does someone know the who makes the chain guide?
Looks like a Wolf Tooth LoneWolf aero guide.
is there a crack in the derailleur?
What tyres are those ?
So what is the maximum capacity of the rear cassette- still 44?

Dirty kanza!
What about those wheels?
Zipp 404FC
spell his name right for goodness sake!
iiiiiiiii still reckon eliminating the derailleur hanger is a mis step. can they really build it in a way that doesn't risk borking the dropout and therefore your frame? where does that impact energy go?
The axle
When are they big 2 going to develop a proper inner shifting system, whether is hub or BB based? Stop adding cogs, narrowing chains... please
Edit: Classified going the right direction, something along those lines please
guess I am skipping 1x12 and going directly to 1x13 🤷♂😂
Like how many gears do we need on a cassette lol. Just go ahead and make a 20 cogg 🤣.
Any 1x with less than 15 speeds in underspeeded.
13 speed answered a question that no one asked lol, especially on a course like Kanza.
WHY ?
Ohh…to have unlimited money. 😂
Name wrong in title. Nice group though
@@TheRidewithBenDelaney valtterri not valtterria
@@user-bb6xb3cz1k Sorry to say those are both wrong. It's Valtteri.
sram R&D deserves a vacation
SRAM, we don't want 13 speeds, enough! I love the xplr transmission hybrid but we have enough incompatibility between groupset and components. I for one would rather run eagle 12spd than this on my gravel back end.
Would this be the first mainstream brand groupset where the shifters are released to operate a certain speed (12) but are actually capable of operating at the next speed up (13)?
SRAM Corporate is either losing their minds right now or just embracing this non traditional launch. SRAM must be worried about Shimano's DI2 2X and 1X Systems.
Why.
Be careful of the sram mafia
Yawn…wake me up when they match the gear range of 46/30 GRX with 40t cassette.
Isn’t that Tiff Cromwell’s boyfriend?
They gotta stop adding gears as a go to when they run out of things to update, how about getting the genius's to get rid of the messy greasy chain, dont need more gears
I’ve got a better idea 11 or 12x2 massive range of gears without big leg wrecking jumps. Less chain deflection wasting energy and I wonder how long before the skinny chains snap🤣but there again I think grovel bikes are pretty mediocre off road and on it
I’m utterly shocked you’re not working for SRAM or Shimano. Shocked I tell you!
I think a grovel bike would perfectly suit my performance level if I ever did i
Unbound!
First
13 is bad luck.....need to skip a gear and call it 14 speed
Why would they release new 12s and 13s red groupsets so close together? The whole sram selling point is the ecosystem and compatibility. This makes no sense to me.
Unless they know Shimano is coming out with 1x13 soon?
13? Seriously? 😒
Just don’t buy it.
