the real mvp!
Spomenik is correct Steve 🇷🇸
Also Bauhaus cover of Eno's "Third Uncle".
Coil is otherworldly❤🤟
Thanks for the set list! 👍
There was zero chance Brian Eno wasn’t going to get mentioned.
Warm Jets
I was hoping for a Steve Roach mention
@@MRCKify I’m an Another Green World man, but you really can’t go wrong recommending any of his work from the 70s-80s. Before and After Science is also mandatory listening imo

@@dakken74 wow just Steve roach being mentioned in a comment section on a revolver video shocks me. SR is a genius
This is a man that loves music.
In Neurosis there is basically a trace of all the stuff he mentioned.
If you take it a step further, one might even say, that Neurosis isnt't even a metal band despite loud electric guitars.
@@BigMuff75 agree, "metal" is too simplistic
Could listen to Steve talk for hours describing musical genres or giving album reviews.🤘💪
I love what you're doing with these album list episodes. So informative and breaks open barriers exposing fans to deeper tiers of music connected through legends.
Stars of the Lid mention, nice. Good music for long train rides in Europe.
Loving how unorthodox these choices are. Also ambient was one of my first forays into non metal music back when my musical palette was fairly limited, so all of these ambient records makes total sense. Glad to see Basinski and Bauhaus mentioned!
I went from rock to metal to post-metal to post-rock to ambient stuff and Neurosis and Isis were a huge part of that transition so it's really cool to hear a lot of his recommendations.
I can't think of a better nonmetal album for metalheads than Visual Audio Sensory Theater by VAST.
ua-cam.com/video/66WbImnIl9M/v-deo.html
Wow, I did not expect Coil and TG to be mentioned. Very impressed with his musical tastes!
Agreed!
😂 I'm very impressed with how his music tastes are like mine. Very impressive indeed!
Don’t get much darker than those though
@@aplus1080 More that I'm impressed with the range of his tastes, not that they mimic mine. But you do you.
If anything, this video makes me want to listen to Neurosis. I haven't before, but this guy has incredible music taste!
start with 2nd album and work up. it's neat to hear their music evolve into what it did
Wow! Get ready for a trip man!
Fasten your seatbelt! What an utterly immersive world they create. Sometimes uncomfortable tho always intensely rewarding. They released an album called "Times Of Grace" that has a companion album by Neurosis' experimental alter ego Tribes Of Neurot called "Grace" that you listen to at the same time in separate CD players. That will thoroughly blow your mind...
You should! Neurosis are amazing!
I envy you the journey you're about to take, friend. They are, without hyperbole, the most incredible band I've ever heard.
I find a lot of metalheads also enjoy contemporary folk music. It's kind of ironic I guess, but it's a phenomenon I've observed.
Yes ... not sure about contemporary, but all my metal head friends (I'm not a big metal head ... just a small one) like Comus ... to a lesser extend Fairport Convention .. and then Vand de graft Generator .. etc ...
Primitive Americana, delta blues and bluegrass, definitely avenues to follow on from teenage metal days
But Dylan electrocuted folk in the ‘60’s.
The fact that he mentioned Coil, one of my all time favorite groups, is simply awesome. Their entire catalog is diverse and amazing and I can definitely say as a metal head myself, that most metal heads can find at least one album by them they will dig.
Coil is something beyond music, also one of my favorite groups ever. Horse Rotorvator was the pinnacle for industrial experimental music and I also love Music To Play in the Dark Vol. 1 and 2.
@@elalbert942.0 Surprisingly, it's the unreleased Hellraiser II themes that got me into them initially. The next albums that hooked me were Music Vol. 1 and 2. Those are also my favorites by them. I also adore .....And the Ambulance Died In His Arms. To me, anyways, one of the best live albums ever recorded.
Coil is very important for LGBT community
I can't think of a better nonmetal album for metalheads than Visual Audio Sensory Theater by VAST.
ua-cam.com/video/66WbImnIl9M/v-deo.html
Coil is so underrated it's insane
Huge props and appreciation to you, Steve Von Till. You dropped 2 wisdom nuggets that led me to check out Sandy Denny and Townes Van Zandt. Both are absolutely amazing artists and its all I've been listening to as of late. Thank you sir, and thanks Revolver for this segment. More of these please.

The cure - Disintegration
Pixies - Doolittle
Genesis - Selling England by the pound
Rose Kemp - Unholy majesty

Can you swoop out pg3 for Peter Hammill and Nadirs Big Chance?
Good stuff… like seeing Pixies
Kudos for the tangerine dream reference. Love that album.
Actually you got a few good ones. I like Portishead as a non metal group also.
SUPER solid list. I want him to expand this to Top 25, please!
That was a good watch and listen. Ty
Can not wait to see you perform!!!
I'm saving this video to refer back to later. He's incredibly articulate and picked a bunch of interesting albums.
Wow this is great! Smart dude, love hearing from a true professional and true music fan. Much love dude. Respect.
Great insight ... it is comforting to know I was brought up "hearing" then listening to quite a few of these bands via 3 older brothers ... Hawkwind , Eno , Throbbing Gristle (then Coil & PsYcHiC TV) among the most influential.
Thank you very much! Perfect list, full of real discoveries!
Great inspiring list, thanks!
Yep, you certainly know music...I came arcos your site and truly enjoyed your detailed info and perceptions on sounds.
These videos are brilliant for discovering new and off centre music. Thanks.
I remember Bauhaus that was in the eighties and most people were bopping to Wham , Bauhaus was so refreshing and so were some of the electronica artists at the time .
Great video, it's a pleasure to listen to prepared and passionate musicians talking about music
Thanks for mentioning Townes! Next to The Hole, one of the darkest songs he made was A Song For, which is so melodically beautiful and so emotionally heavy. But also love his funny and sometimes goofy side.
Millions of notes
for two ears.
Thanks,
Peace on earth.
I’m gonna go back and check out these. It’s always good to get something different and new into your ears.
So well presented that I tried all these records.
As an old school Metal fan these are a few non-Metal releases that have become my faves: Talking Heads-Remain in Light
The Cure-Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss me
Roxy Music-Siren
Miles Davis-Bitches Brew
King Crimson-Discipline
Can-Tago Mago
Kraftwerk-Trans Europe Express
Richard and Linda Thompson-Shoot Out the Lights
Soft Machine-Bundles
Nothing truly obscure, but all great and well worth checking out.
+1 for Soft Machine. Also, since you brought up The Cure, "Pornography", "Faith" and "Seventeen Seconds" still hold their own.
You brought up Bundles, but Third is their best album by far.
Good stuff
Very cool
I can't think of a better nonmetal album for metalheads than Visual Audio Sensory Theater by VAST.

This channel just showed up in my feed, and I'm blown away by it! I'm just a layman, not a musician, but I have a great appreciation for music, and I love to learn about it. This is such an amazing list! I immediately subscribed, and I look forward to digging through your channel further and soaking up the knowledge! Thank you! 👍✌️
Excelent curation, great content!
Some really great recommendations here, thank you !
Yes!!! Thank you for the Laughing Hyenas shout out! Those guys are incredible and so underrated!!!
Featuring John Brannon, vocalist from Negative Approach, arguably one of the best hardcore bands of all time.
It's truly great to hear your voice times with you and times without you. From shows at Rkcndy in Seattle and the heat of Tucson, the times walking to Dick's to grab a burger. I love you man and I'm thankful for you today.
- an old friend.
It is very useful information for melomans! Thumb up!
I love Townes Van Zandt, and Bauhaus is great too! Never heard of or gave some of the others a good listen. Will have to check them out….thanks for the list Steve Von Till!
Guy Clark and Blaze Foley work great with Townes in my playlists. Them and, let's be honest here, select Neil Young.
Steve Von Till emite en mi existencia creatividad, es un elemento de inspiración a mi vivir. Escuchar sus propuestas musicales me alimenta el corazón.
Great list, dear Steve. You have good taste, friend. Laughing Hyenas, Die Kreuzen, Coil, Throbbing Gristle, Bauhaus,...I love them
Lots of dark ambient and industrial / goth. I was surprised not to see Tangerine Dream but then he mentioned them while discussing Coil 😂
Summer 2006, I saw Bauhaus on the NIN "With Teeth" tour in Atlanta. What a great show that was.
Huge respect for Townes Van Zandt!
A real genius with such a sad story
The way you describe each song the various artist play really makes me feel the music, some of the descriptions may seem foreign to most, meaning words that aren't used often, if ever, but I myself was able to really get the feel of what you were describing and couldn't agree more in your assessment of these songs and of the various artist, glad I listened to this
Interesting concept. Here are my 11 recommendations:
1) My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
2) PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love
3) The Cure - Pornography
4) Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden
5) Dead Can Dance - The Serpent's Egg
6) Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
7) Bauhaus - In the Flat Field
8) Wire - Chairs Missing
9) Pere Ubu - Terminal Tower
10) Mission of Burma - s/t
11) Television - Marquee Moon
Some great albums there!
@@NessNayii Thanks! I tried to pick them based on factors like vibe, and "heaviness" of sound -- the layers of noise on the MBV album seemed a good fit, and To Bring You My Love has a nasty guitar tone and dark mood. The Cure and Bauhaus albums have both. Television should have some appeal based on the guitar work alone.
Everything here is gold. Glad to see Dead Can Dance. I don't encounter a lot of people who know them but those who do are typically musicians with an ear for interesting and sublime music. PJ Harvey was a surprise. I put it on as I am writing this and glad I did.
Talk Talk!
Yuck
Great and interesting picks. Lungs is my favorite Townes song. I will be grabbing the Last and First men dvd.
Very diverse and all interesting stuff. So cool to see Eno's On Land being appreciated, that album sounds like a night alone in a beautiful and slightly hostile forest.
Came here by chance. What a wonderful and inspiring video.
Amazing video
I love when someone you wouldn't expect to be a scholar about a subject humbly and expertly lays down wisdom in a clear fashion that encourages you to follow the same trail and find new things that you missed.
And I have that Sandy Denny album by accident. It was a cover buy (I liked the jacket) because there was a bunch of Fairport Convention turned in and my budget was small, so I picked that album up and now I gotta listen to it.
Absolutely love Towns Van Zant and Sandy..Thanks
Good music is good music, regardless of the genre. So glad you mention Adrian Sherwood. His On-U Sound label is so good, everything on it, and nearly anything he touches is just gold!
Is "good music" determined by you...?
@@Kowinaida Yes. What I deem good is determined by me. Just like what you deem good is determined by you. Hope that clears things up for you.
@@blbean I don't understand
What a great list, I just went ahead and bought William Bakinski’s Melancholia as soon as the video was over. I love it when musicians drop these beautiful recommendations. Thanks Revolver and Steven!
this man is one of my all-time musical heroes.
I remember seeing Die Kreuzen at the Farm (SanFrancisco) back in 1986. They were amazing and I still love listening to that first album.
This was really interesting!! More like this please..
The Tired Sounds Of Stars Of The Lid is an amazing record, also among the ones I've listened most times. It's a shame it wasn't on his list, but I'm glad he still mentioned it
Adam Wiltzie has probably become one of my absolute favorite artists, ever. there's just something about everything he touches that is just... magic. my favorite SotL record has got to be ...And Their Refinement of the Decline, but The Dead Texan project he did may actually be the best thing he's ever done
Great selection! I’d recommend two other albums, Einstürzende Neubauten’s Halber Mensch and Scott Walker’s Bish Bosch. Two of my faves, very percussion heavy, great stuff. Likewise I started listening to a lot of metal and heavy stuff during my teens but eventually wanted to explore more
I’d also recommend Merzbow’s music, he has such a varied discography and many albums would appeal to the metal audience, after all he’s collaborated with Boris and Mortiis
RIP Scott Walker, his musical direction starting from the mid 90s onwards is amazing (I mean, his early career was incredible too but a totally different sound).
Einstürze! Great suggestion!
In that same, basic vein, (dark and percussive) I just added Crash Worship's, ¡Espontáneo! to the suggestions here.
If you like Blixa and company, you should consider checking that out.
Here's my summation I posted, above:
"I'd add to these suggestions Crash Worship's "¡Espontáneo!"
The track "Awake", specifically, but the entire album is essential listening for anyone into dark and powerful music.
Uber~Bohemian Drum/Percussion/Chanting group with some electronics, horns and tape manipulation, but used in the same fashion.
Very dark, yet celebrating of life.
At live gigs, a member would walk around the audience, from time to time, pouring either water or wine all over the heads and into the mouths of the crowd, along with fireworks and spontaneous piles of audience~ignited clothing, crazy dancing...
It's what you'd expect to be the soundtrack from a REALLY intense, dark and spastic ritual in a Horror Film, but engulfing you in a club.
They'd end the shows with an around the block procession of the band, still playing with the audience in tow, like children being led off to the nether world.
Good stuffs.... ;)"
Cheers!
Glad someone mentioned EN. One of my all time favorites.
@@alejandroantoniovaladezuva4504 Merzbow has an ENORMOUS discography (I've got 40 albums and there's probably 10 times as much out there and it can get a bit samey). I reckon '24 Hours A Day of Seals' is a good metal choice as it features some evil sounding guitar loops. I love Japanese noise (early Boredoms, Incapacitants, Masonna etc.) because it's so unhinged it makes me smile whereas I find metal seems too serious for me, maybe that's because I'm 60 and life's getting too short to want to actively seek out doom and gloom. Each to their own!
Thank you for Townes mention.
Great video
Coils cover of tainted love is badass AF!
One of my all-time favorite albums is The Word Is Law by Neurosis but had Pain Of Mind around 1989. Saw them live in NYC in 1990! They were sick!
Great, great list!
i've never listened to Neurosis or even knew who Steve von till is, but it's always delightful to hear other musicians nerd out about music.
im a huge swans fan so i'll go take a listen to that Neurosis & Jarboe album!
That's possibly the worst sounding album of theirs. Definitely go with Times of Grace/Grace or if you're looking for something to assault you then go with Through Silver in Blood
@@jovan9989 thx fam, will do
I honestly don't care how albums "sound" of course it plays a huge role on the outcome of an album, and some albums are just unlistenable bc of a bad mix but I focus a lot more on songwriting and structure. that being said, I enjoyed the Collab album a lot and I'm looking forward to take a deep dive into neurosis discography
This guy is what true musicians are all about. Well rounded and smart. So on point!
Damn . This is deep. I feel fortunate enough to own a lot of these. Steve is brilliant.
cheers!
Coil, Throbbing Gristle, Townes Van Zandt, Bauhaus, William Basinski, Brian Eno... all my taste :)
Kudos
Nice one
Thanks
That "Throbbing Gristle" album is awesome! Never heard of that one before, thank you so much for sharing, I love English ambient music. Another one that should have been added to this list that is absolutely essential dark ambeint music is "Boards of Canada: Geogaddi", such a great album.
Love this band and not surprised to hear his list! Johann Johannsson rip and amazing music. Thanks for posting
if you only listen to metal, I wholeheartedly pity you. There is SO MUCH great music out there
..... but all the great music is metal :p
Pity is a strong word. Yes there is a bunch of good music out there, different strokes for different folks man.
They don't really like music though
i only like metal bands that can accually play rest notes where they play the rest of the notes, and dont sell out to the elitist "keys" and "melody" propaganda. Time is only a theory anyways. Tuning is gay and a waste of time, keyboards are stupid, short hair is ok if it doesnt look gay
@@pcb8059 Because apparently being gay or looking gay is "bad"... ...grow up. Come back to this comment when you get out of grade school, kid. 😂
Was not expecting Sandy Denny! Nice! 👍
I love the awesome barn... wow piano with the skull... great choices, love the guy!
Great selection
Neurosis was a band I discovered in my late 20's. I will for sure check out this, Fairport Convention & Sandy Denny stuff.
Saw Die Kreuzen open for PiL at the Eagles Club in Milwaukee back in 87. Great show.
Excellent articulation of his music appreciation - would listen to more of this!
Always good to see love getting shown for Sandy Denny/Fairport.
Metalhead’s should listen to Diamonda Galas. There are people who can do wonders with their voices and she is one of them. She gave voice overs for horror movies
Wow this was fascinating and enlightening
sick list!
Loscil and Lustmord might pique some interest here as traces down the ambient end!
And always have to mention Colin Stetson.
Great list! See you in San Jose
He praises the guitarist from Bauhaus who is of course Daniel Ash who led Love & Rockets, Tones on Tail and also had a long solo career. If you’re interested, he still tours Bauhaus and mostly Tones on Tail songs with his daughter under the band name Poptone.
I really want to raid this dude's record collection. All great and really diverse stuff here.
Hey Steve, hey Revolver! This is a superb list; grateful to know most of 'em, will check the others out. Here's my 11, with some descriptions for the interested/uninitiated...
1. Zu- Italian 'Noise Jazz' trio, consisting of a Drummer, Bassist, and Bass Saxophonist, playing his brass through a Distortion Rig. Live, the Sax sounds like the Ship's Horn of Satan's Flagship Destroyer. The HEAVIEST thing I have ever heard, Metal or otherwise! Literally came outta the show with my ears screaming in pain.
2. Béla Bartók- Hungarian 20th Century Composer, known for the dark, ominous atmospheres in a lot of his music. Some of his music was in the Score of Kubrick's version of 'The Shining'.
3. Univers Zero- Experimental/Avant-garde Music Ensemble from Belgium, led by drummer Daniel Denis. Part of the 'Rock In Opposition' musical Movement from that country. Like Bartók, whom they were influenced by, they're renowned for their dark, nightmarish soundscapes.
4. Polkadot Cadaver- Californian Experimental Rock/Fusion outfit, partially formed from the ashes of Alt-Metal outfit Dog Fashion Disco. Known for their eclectic style, and eccentric song/album titles. Check out the album 'Purgatory Dance Party' as a starter.
5. Atrium Carceri- One-man Dark Ambient/Experimental project from Sweden. Explores Themes such as Physical/Mental Imprisonment, Oppression, and Emptiness.
6. Phurpa- Russian ensemble dedicated to highlighting the Traditional music of the indigenous Bon People of Siberia; gutteral Throat Singing, ethnic percussion, and terrifying instruments I call the "Death Pipes" 😅. Check out their Set for the Boiler Room crew here on YT. Spine-tingling.
7. CocoRosie- Experimental duo consisting of 2 American sisters, known for their eclectic style. There's even some use of Distorted Guitar in there! Suitable for open-minded Metalheads as quite a bit of their material is dark and surreal. Unique.
8. Niccolo Paganini- well, he literally was known as 'The Devil's Violinist'!! Italian Virtuoso, known for his near-Mythic playing ability and Composition. Arguably the World's first-ever Rock Star.
9. Sunburned Hand Of The Man- Experimental Collaborative from the North-East USA, featuring literally DOZENS of rotating members. Known for their darkly surreal, feverish Sound on a lot of recordings.
10. Those Poor Bastards- Dark Americana/Gothic Western duo from the Midwest US. Lyrical themes include Damnation, Depression, Addiction, Pariahism, and a general contempt for Mainstream Society; pretty Metal themes in all.
11. Nick Drake- English Folk/Alternative Singer-Songwriter, known for his odd Picking Styles, and frequently dark/moody/morose songs. Caked in self-destruction and tragedy, he never achieved the success in life he deserved, only gaining recognition for his work 25 years after his untimely death.
Hope this enriches someone's Ear Palette out there, enjoy!! 🤟🏻
Neurosis is my favorite. Autechre EP7 worth a look. Coil Music to Play in the Darl Vol 2- Broccoli
Sunset Mission by Bohren & Der Club of Gore. Probably my all time favorite. Their whole catalog is great also.
Smooth noir detective music 🔝
Very interesting. I could listen to this dude talk about music for hours!
this is great thank you I would never known about this stuff
Great Picks!!
I’m a metal head and love funk music drums and bass are why I dig it
This man has excellent taste in music
Die kreuzen is one of the most underrated bands in any genre
Favorite drummer 🥁 to check out when I was a kid
For ‘dark ambient’ give Aphex Twins. Selected ambient works two an investigation. Very different to anything else he released.
Fantastic fantastic fantastic fantastic fantastic fantastic fantastic fantastic fantastic FANTASTIC list. EXCELLENT.
Thank you it is all great music really this is very useful .
Some awesome suggestions here
