Not a Lamb of God fan but thought it would be interesting to see the list. Agree with Randy regarding the Bad Brains. Discharge was a huge influence on Thrash Metal, but the Bad Brains were easily the greatest band I have listened to or have witnessed. The Cure, one of my favorite bands... and I'm a person who loves 90's metallic hardcore, groove metal, etc. I got into Joy Division because of NIN. Also, I love John Coltrane.
Serious question for you, P S... I've tried to get into Coltrane numerous times, but don't personally feel the same connection to his stuff as I do artists like Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk or Rahsaan Roland Kirk. (That said, I do appreciate "A Love Supreme" as a jazz masterpiece.) Something I'm missing when I listen to Coltrane? Something I should be listening for? Oh - and I'd love to see Randy's take on Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells". I've loved that album since I first heard it at four years old.
Makes me so happy that other people can see their metal idol speak of other genres of music, letting them know that you don’t have to listen to one type of music. I listen to all of this, so awesome!
There's been a great deal of metal fans who love different genres of music: usually the only requirement being that the person is passionate and kind of characterful/original.
Yes but why is this all only English speaking artists..pretty narrow minded to be honest when there are way better musicians from other countries with non English music
Great list, and I know it's impossible to mention all of the greats, but I think it's worth to mention these records too: - The Jesus Lizard - Goat (1991) - Suicide - s/t (1977) - The Stooges - Fun House (1970) - Killing Joke - s/t (1980) - Laughing Hyenas - You Can't Pray A Lie (1988) The list goes endless...
When it comes to the Jesus Lizard, I’d say Liar and Shot over Goat. But, that’s just my opinion. Although, Down has the best album cover I have ever seen on any album, In Utero included.
In my opinion, good metal pulls from other genres to make something that's still abrasive, but different in a cool way. Part of what makes Lamb of God so iconic is because you can hear the southern drawl in Randy's screams and it makes all his vocals unique. You can listen to any Lamb of God song and know it's them because of that. The same applies to a band like Car Bomb that incorporates elements of hardcore punk and jazz in their music to make stuff that sounds really audacious and different at the same time.
Seems easiest for me to get people into Metal with the Static X "Wisconsin Death Trip" album. Everyone is intrigued by the strange samples, disco-like rhythms and Waynes occasionally comical sounds and singing patterns. Endlessly satisfying and entices everyone's inner curiosity. 'I'm with Stupid' being a good introduction. It really is what Wayne himself said, "Evil Disco".
Yes!! Static X was and still is great for that. Seriously I can imagine so many people would have gotten into metal cause of the great late Wayne Static🤘
love me some Push It I was gifted that album for xmas when I was about ten years old and listened the shit out of it, still visit it from time to time for nostalgia sake
Thanks Randy! As a matter of fact, I'm a metalhead and I dig all your picks. All these albums are excellent. Just so many ways to get you to a dark place, something we metalheads are certainly welcoming, haha. Cheers
I loves The Cure, Sisters of Mercy and Joy Division years before I started to really listen to extrem metal and I can only agree, this list was awesome. From blue's, to cool Reggae and Discharge to Cure, SOM and JD.
Agreed! That spring break show on the beach, Bad Brains set is absolute Fire! "House of Suffering" you can feel the Energy through the TV, HR's range of Vocals is on full display. Stands the test of Time still sounds insane!🤙🏽
My immediate thoughts were Joy Division and The Cure (I would've chosen Disintegration or Seventeen Seconds) both of which he touched on. Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left also comes to mind. Beautifully melancholy folk record. Riverman is a sublime song.
I looked this up and it's a great album. She has such a great voice. I stumbled across a Gathering song years ago, liked it, but then forgot about them. They seem like one of those indie or more obscure bands that are really good but didnt get known.
Coincidentally, back in 04' Lamb of God was actually my bridge band into what would become an obsession with metal (Ashes of the Wake is in my top 20) But my favorite album of all time, and the album I return to periodically to reset my musical pallet so to speak after too much metal or gangster rap is Kind of Blue, by Miles Davis. The track Blue in Green being my favorite song of all time.
Very much so! Notably, Coltranes contributions to the album are so absolutely essential to the spirit of the project that for Kind of Blue to be lauded as a Miles Davis album is somewhat of an understatement. (and that's still saying nothing of Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb) Coltranes talent manifests so conspicuously throughout the arrangements of the project that it playfully entices a sort of "challenge accepted" nuance from Davis, who delivers a brilliant performance of raw and cathartic melancholy, laid bare as Coltrane confides in, expounds upon and immortalizes the somber, the haunting and the sometimes cheerful notes of a true American masterpiece
I love many genres of music and I have to agree Blue in Green is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard and Kind of Blue is one of the best albums I’ve ever heard. Don’t get me wrong, A Love Supreme is GREAT, but Kind of Blue is magnetic. I’ve always liked his interviews. He knows his stuff, and gave credit where credit was due, I got mad respect.
Robert Johnson's guitar playing influenced the likes of Joe Perry Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, the list goes on and on. He was also an amazing vocalist, storyteller and songwriter. 🙏❤
Wovenhand are top of my list. If I had to pick an album I'd say the self-titled debut but most of their stuff is amazing. Most of David Eugene Edward's stuff is good.
Bad brains are one of my favorite bands of all time…. They were so much better musicians and wrote such badass riffs and played them so fuckin fast.. athletically fast.. and HR was the greatest frontman in punk rock imo
Your dead on about HR and THE BAD BRAINS!!! They played numerous times 8n 1980S NYC AND NJ! Definitely the best shows I've seen in decades of rocking out 😎
To this day I Against I by Bad Brains is a brilliant album. I also really dig stuff by Sisters Of Mercy and Big Black. That Blythe fella has pretty good taste.
Dude, thank you for mentioning Nick Cave! I know Bad Seeds, (BADASS!!) and now you've convinced me to listen to Prayers On Fire. I was buying Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, and Classic Rock all at the same time for years...But the first 2 albums I would consider a huge departure from my norm were Mazzy Star's "So Tonight That I Might See," and Counting Crows "August And Everything After."
His picks are spot on. Heavy on post punk (cheers!) but those are good choices for showing how to create atmosphere and a compelling presence as a frontman
This is what any true musical fan need to do… explore music.. listen to your favorite groups influences and work back. Sisters, Cure, Joy Division- massively influential in so many great artists who themselves became influences.
This makes me smile ‘cause I was the only one of my (teenaged) peer group that lacked the fear to not only listen to, but “admit” to what I was listening to. I took so much shit for loving metal, and overnighting (alone) to see metal shows in a city that was accessible only by ferry for 14 hours a day - a thirteen year old kid showing up to hostels with 10pm curfews, well after 11pm. I grew up listening to country and folk music of the ‘50’s - ‘70’s - Johnny Cash, Charley Pride, Dolly Parton, George Jones, Bruce Cockburn and Gordon Lightfoot. I then found punk (Hüsker Dü & SNFU), metal, and all things ‘80’s synth - Cyndi Lauper and The Bronski Beat, as well as Dexter Gordon, Joe Pass and Aretha Franklin - Bach, Roxy Music and The Cure. Emotion can be found anywhere, you’ve just gotta be open to finding it.
Robert smith from the cure actually began recording with a metallic acoustic on the album you referenced, further lending itself to the ear of a metal head. The cure are an amazing group.
I just like music - I don’t care if it’s metal or whatever. I love obituary, I love Bob Marley, I love Nofx, I love lamb of god, I love rancid, I love Devin Townsend, I love Nile Rodgers, I love the Cure, I love Slayer
If I was asked to make a similar list, here's what I'd put forward (in no particular order); 1. Envy on the Coast - Lowcountry 2. The Black Keys - Attack & Release 3. Crosses / ††† - self titled 4. Daft Punk - Discovery 5. Panic! at the Disco - Vices & Virtues 6. Rise Against - Siren Song of the Counter Culture 7. The Allman Brothers Band - Brothers and Sisters 8. The Dear Hunter - The Color Spectrum 9. Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP 10. Them Crooked Vultures - self titled 11. Weird Al Yankovic - Mandatory Fun
Cool Werner Herzog shirt in Danzig motif.. I personally like the earlier SOM stuff more but Floodland was a big part of my childhood.. The Jamaican Dub suggestions are perfect, and the 80’s post punk and early UK hardcore stuff are essential, and of course Bad Brains..
My 10 favorite non-metal albums 1. Adele-21 2. ABBA-Gold 3. Ace of Base-Happy Nation 4. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds- The Boatman’s Call 5. Prince- Purple Rain 6. New Order- Low-Life 7. Fleetwood Mac-Rumours 8. Joy Division- Closer 9. K’s Choice- Paradise in Me 10. Son Volt- Trace 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽

Perfect artist for this discussion: Tom Waits. As someone with a pretty wide listening taste, he's hand down the most unique artist I listen to. He doesn't easily fit into any existing popular genre (he usually gets thrown into "singer/songwriter" because he writes good songs). He has the most raw, intense, heavy songs that aren't rock, and he rights some of the most beautiful ballads. A real gift to the world of music.
Many metalheads think that anyone in a Metal band, especially singers/songwriters, only listen to or are influenced by Metal music. If anything, this list shows that Randy is a person who loves music for what it makes him feel, either lyrically or sonically, and not because of its genre. 100% approved list!
Randy's damn right when he says that we owe a lot to Dub music in particular, and to jamaician music in general. I had a big Reggae period after the Hard /Metal years, and then came back to my former loves, but I'm glad even if I'm not into Reggae anymore (bc I'm tired of lyrics as deep as "Love is good, and war is bad") that I digged into this for my personnal culture. Reggae and Dub brought us the DJ's, the electronic music, and...the rapping. Thank you Randy for being so humble, cultivated and thankful.

- The Stooges - Fun House (1970)
- Killing Joke - s/t (1980)
- Laughing Hyenas - You Can't Pray A Lie (1988)
The list goes endless...
fun house is correct
Yes. Too many to mention. 🤘
Iggy Pop - Lust for Life as well
When it comes to the Jesus Lizard, I’d say Liar and Shot over Goat. But, that’s just my opinion. Although, Down has the best album cover I have ever seen on any album, In Utero included.
Those are great choices btw.
Revolver is the master of making Things I as a fan and musician really wanna hear.
Love this! Metal is influenced by so many genres that sound different but aren't really when you really listen
@GardenBoyDon. Classical, Jazz, Bluegrass, Blues music, Country, and Soul. All of those genres are what paved the way for everything that came after.
Yeah, wisconsin death trip was a stroke of genius for that era.
Yes!! Static X was and still is great for that. Seriously I can imagine so many people would have gotten into metal cause of the great late Wayne Static🤘
love me some Push It
I was gifted that album for xmas when I was about ten years old and listened the shit out of it, still visit it from time to time for nostalgia sake
Man,his musical knowledge and taste are far and wide! That rocks! 🤘
it's always awesome for me to hear singers like randy just speak in their regular voice
Disintegration is without a doubt one of the best albums of all time and i will physically fight anyone who disagrees lmao
My all time favourite album is Souvenirs by The Gathering, just a phenomenal album that mixes Trip Hop with Prog.
The gathering is dope. A noise severe is my favorite.
Thanks for the recommendation
if anyone into metal is curious to check them out but doesn't want to leave their comfort zone as much, their first 4 albums incorporate a metal sound
Trip hop meets prog sounds awesome.
I looked this up and it's a great album. She has such a great voice. I stumbled across a Gathering song years ago, liked it, but then forgot about them. They seem like one of those indie or more obscure bands that are really good but didnt get known.
Bad Brains s/t is one of the greatest heavy albums ever.
Only like 2 of their albums aren’t so good.
Death was way better imo
Props for recognising scratch Perry as a pioneer of effects! Cool list, definitely checking these out!
Most perfect album ever created in my opinion
Very much so! Notably, Coltranes contributions to the album are so absolutely essential to the spirit of the project that for Kind of Blue to be lauded as a Miles Davis album is somewhat of an understatement.
(and that's still saying nothing of Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb)
Coltranes talent manifests so conspicuously throughout the arrangements of the project that it playfully entices a sort of "challenge accepted" nuance from Davis, who delivers a brilliant performance of raw and cathartic melancholy, laid bare as Coltrane confides in, expounds upon and immortalizes the somber, the haunting and the sometimes cheerful notes of a true American masterpiece
David Eugene Edwards is creative.
16 Horsepower-Secret South is an all time favorite of mine. Wovenhand is equally excellent.
@@catjudo1 Agreed.
Bad brains are one of my favorite bands of all time…. They were so much better musicians and wrote such badass riffs and played them so fuckin fast.. athletically fast.. and HR was the greatest frontman in punk rock imo
Robert Johnson! And rightfully so. We ought to never forget the roots of metal.
Your dead on about HR and THE BAD BRAINS!!! They played numerous times 8n 1980S NYC AND NJ! Definitely the best shows I've seen in decades of rocking out 😎
I could listen to Randy talk music all day. Truly enjoy how vast his taste is.
Discharge sound was very influencial also. Heavy, dark, apokaliptic🤘
To this day I Against I by Bad Brains is a brilliant album. I also really dig stuff by Sisters Of Mercy and Big Black. That Blythe fella has pretty good taste.
A Forest by The Cure has had a lot of great metal cover versions.
Some of his picks really impress me positively!
I really thought Massive Attack-Mezzanine was the be on this list. It give you that deep dark feeling that very few groups ever achieve.
the "fried", distorted sound of trip hop isn't as far from guitar distortion as one might think
I’m a metal head and I love the blues, reggae, the cure and sisters of mercy
I guess our ears gravitate towards similar frequencies
Robert smith from the cure actually began recording with a metallic acoustic on the album you referenced, further lending itself to the ear of a metal head. The cure are an amazing group.
They need to release their new work. They're probably sitting on 10 albums by now...
"Metalluc acoustic" meaning those steel string guitars you find in like Johnny Marr/Peter Murphy songs etc.?
@@te9591 it’s a flat steel board still hollow with holes in it rather than wood, also known as a resonator guitar.
@@chubbymonkey452 sounds cool
@@symbologeeThey Performed 2 New Songs the other day. You can find them on UA-cam.
Honestly, most metal head I know respect and love the Cure
I just like music - I don’t care if it’s metal or whatever. I love obituary, I love Bob Marley, I love Nofx, I love lamb of god, I love rancid, I love Devin Townsend, I love Nile Rodgers, I love the Cure, I love Slayer
@@Grimeyhoob exodus is pretty good and amon amarth & arch enemy too
Great list. I listened to most of these albums pretty much all my life at different stages, still do. Good video as always.
Discharge!! -No extreme music without them!! Even Kirk Hammett is wearing a Discharge shirt on the back of Ride the Lightning.
disintegration by the cure is in my opinion one of the finest albums ever written, love a cure shoutout
Loveless by My Bloody Valentine would be up there. It's so dense and heavy, yet you could weave cotton candy to it. Same with Grace by Jeff Buckley.
Looked for the Loveless mention; found it. It's like a healthy high.
If I was asked to make a similar list, here's what I'd put forward (in no particular order);
1. Envy on the Coast - Lowcountry
2. The Black Keys - Attack & Release
3. Crosses / ††† - self titled
4. Daft Punk - Discovery
5. Panic! at the Disco - Vices & Virtues
6. Rise Against - Siren Song of the Counter Culture
7. The Allman Brothers Band - Brothers and Sisters
8. The Dear Hunter - The Color Spectrum
9. Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP
10. Them Crooked Vultures - self titled
11. Weird Al Yankovic - Mandatory Fun
I do like a lot of black keys songs lol
Thank you for the Prince Far I - Under Heavy Manners reccomendation.
My 10 favorite non-metal albums
1. Adele-21
2. ABBA-Gold
3. Ace of Base-Happy Nation
4. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds- The Boatman’s Call
5. Prince- Purple Rain
6. New Order- Low-Life
7. Fleetwood Mac-Rumours
8. Joy Division- Closer
9. K’s Choice- Paradise in Me
10. Son Volt- Trace
🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Always good to see some Nick Cave! I’d go for Henry’s Dream personally (or Live Seeds if live albums are allowed)
@@staggerlee7301 thanks.!!!! You have good taste as well 👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽
Great list. Good to see Son Volt on there, Trace is one of my favorites as well!
@@willbritton5719 dude….Trace is so awesome. I love the cover of “Mystifies Me”…that whole album is perfect 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
@@staggerlee7301 check out Nick Caves western called the Propisition if you haven't.
Man I love music of all sorts. Grew up a.metal head and of course was a huuuge lamb of God fan since I was in middle school. Had a shirt that of course my teachers didn't like but growing up I always like oldies as well, funk, disco, rock, reggae especially but always love the metal. Seeing how much randy knows and appreciates music over all just brings an even bigger appreciation to him and everything he's done and gone through himself to.become the solid guy he is today. One love and rock on Randy
Bad Brains is probably the most underrated bands ever. I would have loved to have seen them with COC back in the day.
I saw that tour in 1989 or 1990. COC was touring for technocracy but the bad brains had the other singer not HR. It was still cool but not the same
@@jlobiafra I have seen COC more times than I can count. They used to always play at The Mad Monk in Wilmington, NC. The place closed down, but I saw tons of bands there when I was at Camp Lejeune.
@@burkejones8277 I miss the old COC I can't get into the pepper Keenan stuff
I'm more of an old punk who sort of into metal, and DAMN, I approve of all of these picks, especially Prince Far I and Discharge. Excellent, excellent picks, much respect.
I watch these lists waiting for Joanna Newsoms "Y's" A true masterpiece that should be listened to by those into heavier genres to appreciate quiet intensity like A Love Supreme
This is cool; most artists I've met just grew up exploring different kinds of music - inspired by different people, places and experiences. Awesome vid, Revolver...
My little goth heart is so happy!!!! I do love that your first one is literally bringing it back to the very beginning though. Not only was the mans ability to play extraordinary, but so was his "legend" and the mysterious aspects of his life... So cool! Randy always has been someone with deep layers of thought and interests and I love that about him!
I love Goth and metal - this is a great list. Well explained too. Didn't have a hook before, but will give Lamb of God another try.
1. Beach House-Bloom
2. Run The Jewels-Run The Jewels
3. The Mars Volta-Deloused In The Comatorium
4. Wu Tang Clan-36 Chambers
5. RHCP-Blood Sugar Sex Magik
6. Lauryn Hill-The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
7. Com Truise-Iteration
8. Dredg-Catch Without Arms
9. A Tribe Called Quest-The Low End Theory
10. The Weeknd-Beauty Behind The Madness
11. Interpol-Turn On The Bright Lights
Great segment!
Great picks, I own all but the Prince Far I. I would think that something in the dark ambient genre like Lustmord would be right up just about any metalhead’s alley if they have an open ear.
He works with MJK sometimes.
OMG!!!! I knew it!!!!!! I called it!!! Literally after I heard the song I posted how much the beginning reminded me of Sisters of Mercy... I'm glad I wasn't projecting my likes onto the song... I knew I loved that song bc of the influence!
In my honest opinion
Randy is the best front man in metal right now!
Just got back from seeing yet another EPIC performance from LOG, so I had to crawling onto UA-cam to pick up this little nugget.
A few non-metal favorites:
Trapeze - Medusa
Carole King - Tapestry
Corey Harris - Fish Ain’t Bitin’
Dire Straits - Making Movies
16 Horsepower - Secret South
ZZ Top - ZZ Top’s First Album
Sergei Prokofiev - Alexander Nevsky soundtrack
Brilliant choices! Love the insight and exposition
I am loving this guy's list, but I am blown away that Sisters of Mercy (one of my favorite bands) is on it. That's awesome!
In many of Randy's interviews he says he was never into heavy metal until he joined Burn The Priest. He came from the hardcore punk scene.
@@Spaxcore - I know where he came from.
@@module79l28 chill out, I'm agreeing with you and adding context
This is really great, please keep doing this series!
The Cure song on the Crow Sound track is Amazing.

The Mark of Cain - I'll at ease
The Walkmen - Bows & Arrows
Dungen - ta det lugnt
Magic Dirt - Friends in danger
Palms - Palms
Fireballs - So bad it's good
Can - Monster Movie
Group 1850 - Agemo's trip to mother earth
Gong - You
Gila - Free electric sound
James Brown - Hell
The human beast - Volume one
Dom - Edge of time
Captain Beefheart - Mirror man
Going to see Bad Brains underage was a risky but wonderful decision on my part. HR on throat is the most dynamic frontman I've ever seen apart from Toots Hibble , who was hands down the most dynamic performer I have ever witnessed live
Thanx you've spoken so much truth.! I'm glad you name check bands that I a 58yr old have listen to all my life, Birthday Party, Robert Johnson, Joy Division, Gun Club ( Patricia Morrison) Bad Brains, etc etc etc etc...
Another great list, a couple that I will have to check out, always get a new band to check out so far.
The best thing about hearing what influenced your music idols is the world of new music it opens up for you.
Randy Defs One Of The Gods Of Modern Metal🤘
Quickness was my first Bad Brains, still my favorite BB album.
Interesting list. V. Glad to see early Bad Brains. Inflammable Material by Stiff Little Fingers is a great early punk album. Prince Far I is great too.
Dead Can Dance - Aion
Cocteau Twins - Treasure
Symarip - Skinhead Moonstomp
Laibach - Opus Dei
Cockney Rejects - The Power And The Glory
Dropkick Murphys - Do Or Die
Rancid - Indestructible
The National - High Violet
Cauldhame - Saturnine
Control - Blood Will Rain
Cut Unconscious - Put Me Down Like A Dog
I wholeheartedly agree with the vast majority of this list. Personally, I would add "How Could Hell Be Any Worse" by Bad Religion, "Steel Toe" by the Molecules, "Naked City" by John Zorn, "No Mystery" by Return to Forever, "Pigus Drunkus Maximus" by Top Jimmy and the Rhythm Pigs, and "The Drift" by Scott Walker
Was hoping to see Joe Buck Yourself Piss and Vinegar shouted out, that album, and seeing him live about a dozen times was a real eye opener for me.
So many great bands/artists/albums on this list. Props for mentioning Prince Far I. And how the hell have I missed the project Saudade, haha.
Some good choices especially Sisters of Mercy. I think Electric by The Cult and Fat of the land by the Prodigy should also be in there somewhere. Both great crossover albums
So glad Randy gave a shout out to The Sisters of Mercy, they are soooo underrated!! I recommend everyone listen to their first album "First and Last and Always" in addition to "Floodland", that album is really one of the best albums in dark music ever!
Never thought I'd watch a full one of these but these suggestions are fucking solid. Fair play to randy, excited to check a few of these out
Not normally a fan of these *greatest list* style videos, but a great selection, and interesting exposition of the ones chosen.
