The flower is supposed to be used as an embellishment on the outside of the flap. I suppose there are two in case one wants to use them on both sides of the purse to use it with a strap hanged on the shoulder. I'm sure that if you attach the magnet before you knit the wool through the holes of the lid, the metallic nails of the magnet remain hidden and you don't need the flowers to hide the magnets.

They sell plastic canvas purse forms that are similar to this at Michaels. The purse forms at Michaels do not have the decorative pieces that were cut from the purse form at the beginning of this tutorial.
