I was the only one in my company in Vietnam 67-68 that brought a cleaning kit.I grew up with guns my dad taught me right.
Who would have thought that 7 years later, this video is still teaching ol' dogs new tricks.
This was the most helpful information I ever found after I bought my AR15. I purchased the Bore Snake, Otis kit and a barbers brush after watching this and cleaning my rifle has become easier and easier. I still watch this guy occasionally because it is a pleasure to watch an expert shine doing something he's extremely proficient at. Thank you for a great instructional video.

Very good demonstration thank you! I have always just broken down the BCG and clean the parts with mineral spirits. The same all along the gas system of the rifle and the carbon is gone. I have LSA in a precision oiler and I put a very small drop in the high friction areas. Thousands of rounds later, and the gun has minimal wear and runs as it was intended. Mineral spirits is $8 per quart...
Yes indeed. The gun cleaner/gun lube industry makes millions off of gullible gun owners with new formulations yearly when simple cleaners work the same and for less money. You can make your own more complex cleaners like Ed's Red too for cheap

Excellent detailed instruction! I wish I had an OTIS kit back when I went through Basic in 2000. Now they issue them as standard and we went from a 2 hour cleaning session to a 20 minute session for an inspection grade cleaning.
Nothing like gett'n home after a long day and watching my favorite youtube channel.
Roger is a great guy, knows his stuff. He's helped me several times at Hyatt's in Charlotte.

That is a great cleaning lesson. And to tell you the truth I was very glad to here about ammonium based solvents. I never new the damage they could do to chrome lined barrels. I've checked my all my solvents and I've been lucky so far. Thanks for the video Sootch00. Well worth the time.
For sure helped me nfocus on a few points I was neglecting. This vid or similar class should be a mandatory part of owning an AR. It adds a level of safety just by pointing out some of the nuances associated and unique to the platform. Good Stuff!!

just shot my first ar build this weekend so good timing on this video. I've seen many things about cleaning but this was still helpful. i really enjoy all the things you do for new shooters on your channel.
I watched the whole video to see if there was anything maybe that I've never heard or come across as far as AR cleaning goes, and I'd say sure learned a few things that I may have not known before, worth watching even if you have plenty of experience like myself, I like to get as much information from many different sources on things and take all the good things away from them with the intention of furthering my knowledge on stuff like this or anything else I might be into, good video especially if you just got your first AR platform and weren't in any of the services (where they'll teach you all this stuff) or have little to no gun/AR-15 experience...
This is a must see video, especially for a "1st time" AR owner. The only point that I would like to add is at about 46:18 of reassembling the BCG, after replacing the firing pin into the BC is to make sure that the firing pin is in place all the way forward before replacing the retaining pin. Then double check that the firing pin can not fall out. If the firing pin isn't all the way forward the retaining pin may not hold the firing pin in place thus allowing the firing pin to be lose in the BC which will lead to a very bad jam. Other than that, this is an awesome instructional video. Thank you Sootch00 for producing this for the community.

I bought a Otis MSR kit after watching this video and I have to say, it is by far the BEST cleaning kit I could find. In the past I bought inferior kits..... No more!! Otis really is that good! Hey Scootch, Being a new AR owner I watched this video all the way through and every other cleaning and maintenance video I can find on youtube including many of yours. I have learned so much in a short time but know I have a lot more to learn. I haven't fired my new rifle yet as it is still blistering hot here in Florida and I am waiting for it to cool down a bit to go to the range. Thank you for this video and all of your video's.

Roger did a great job .. picked up some real good tips .. and I've been cleaning an AR rifle for many years in the military. Never thought about a simple "barber's" brush for getting into places where my fingers are too big .. Thanks to Roger and Sootch for another great and useful video .. very useful presentation with a great instructor ..
In the Marine Corps we used a small paint brush, works just as well.
How can you miss part of a cleaning rod with the brush attached not coming out of the barrel. That person must of been drunk when doing that cleaning. Oh and great videos thanks.

Awesome cleaning video not to be rude I didn't learn anything due to the fact that I was in the Marine Corps well still I am in the Marine Corps going on 15 years and I was taught to clean my rifle the exact same way that you cleaned the rifle on the video I feel you did an excellent job of teaching people that didn't know how to properly clean that brand of rifle awesome job Semper Fi

AviatorGM The Corps used CLP: Cleaner, Lubricant and Protectant. The brand is unknown. For deep cleaning the heavy carbon especially after shooting a lot of rounds, we used a solvent tank.

I have cleaned many AR-15 guns and I still enjoyed watching this. I use a one inch paint brush for putting oil on my gun I can't find a good barber brush

Thanks for posting,I had bought some of that Butches Bore shine for my chrome Lined AR15. I did use it but thank goodness I didn't leave it in more than a minute or two. I have not used it since I watched you video.
Very nice. I have been shooting for 30 years & picked up a few tips. Love the barber brush idea. I quit using solvents years ago. I just use Rem Oil & let it sit for a while. Carbon will then come off pretty easily with just a cloth. It takes a little longer & isn't practical if you don't have the time but I enjoy cleaning my guns & I would rather not use solvents.
For lube I use good, old fashon gun grease in the summer. That can get to thick when it gets cold so in winter I use a thin lithium grease. I just haven't found anything better. All these new lubes have their strong points but, overall, it's really hard to beat standard old grease. Especially in an AR. Out in the desert shooting a bunch of rounds grease sticks to your bolt & carrier much longer than any oil I have found.
I learned a lot of things and even tools to use!
Great video and I’m impressed with your speed and efficiency. However I cannot see any of the parts you are describing or the lubrication points. Please consider a video showing the breakdown of the bolt carrier group and lube points in the lower at a distance of less than 6’ from the camera. Thank you

Stumbled across this video while just randomly typing different search topics. Almost didn't click on it as I've watched AR cleaning video's AD NAUSEAM. BUT ..... I did and I learned something, which is always good and just proves that we may not know everything there is to know about a subject "just because we've done it for years or watched thousands of UA-cam videos." Honestly ..... I never knew the collapsible stock could be removed by simply pulling down on the adjustment lever. I have 3 AR's and never really had a need to remove one so I never thought to look it up. Thumbs UP for teaching me something new. One of the main reasons I love UA-cam. Thanks for a great video.

Thirty-four minutes in, and finally, the camera zoom function was used on the biggest part of the rifle!
I would pay for this guy to do the same video again without all the additional noise, more detailed zoomed and focused camera work.
He should mention to wear gloves when cleaning, the kind like at the doctor's office or you can get them at Harbor Freight, same thing when reloading ammo. Good video, good info.
Glockster I'm in big trouble, I've been reloading over 30 years and never once wore gloves.

I think concerns about laquer and polymer cases are overblown. It might only apply after 3 mag dumps or similar use. Even then i believe the laquer they use now is properly cured so it is much less likely to do that. I have shot 1000s and 1000s of laquer 223 without issue.

Overall a great video (I beg to differ on his opinion of steel-cased ammo, but that's a minor criticism). Thanks for posting it sootch. It's also finally persuaded me to pick up an Otis cleaning kit (that BORE tool kicks ass!).

I just bought some steel 223 wolf performance/tulammo and only issues I’m noticing while running this ammo through my 1 month new Saint AR15 (around 300rds total) the back of some of the shells are chewed up!! Cleaned and Checked my extractor and it’s fine
I have to admit, in the last 20,000 rounds of shooting steel I've had zero problems. I clean the bolt every 1,000 rounds and the barrel every 300 rounds. It wasn't until the last 1,000 rounds that I started having issues. After checking the ammo, I found it was a bad lot of wolf. Ran a different lot and was back to 100% success rate. To each his own.

Great video, but the coating on steel cased ammo will not come off, even with a propane torch. The reason is that its dirtier and the carbon builds up,not the coating.
That will be your little secret since I have seen it happen in training classes
About 80% of my shooting is with steel case ammo. I probably shoot 2,500 rounds per year for 12 years now (purchased first AR in 2010 when Obama was in office). Almost no issues.

He is completely wrong about polymer or lacquer coated ammunition leaving a coating inside the chamber after being fired. The polymers won't melt if you hold them over a fire, much less inside a rifle.

Good video and agree with the products mentioned.
But I prefer to use my one piece carbon Tipton cleaning rod with a JP Enterprise bore guide over the snake for speed and ease of use in cleaning the bore of the barrel.
The JP bore guide may seem a bit expensive at $40.00 but it's finished like a fine gun barrel and is a steal for the price, imo.
I'm actually surprised it only cost $40.00, considering the quality !
If you don't have one, get one !
Great video and super helpful info. I get that you want ppl to support their local gun shop but not all gun shop owners / employees are helpful like this. My local shop is run by an A hole who doesnt help anyone with anything.

I have seen another video from three years after this using the same Otis kit and bore snake. I came to the conclusion that many things in this kit would be usable on my other firearms. I also just noticed that the bore snakes are made for my other calibers. So this AR cleaning will be my test of all this. If it does the job going to invest in other ones.

just got done coating the inside and outside of my AR-15 with SUPERTECH SAE 10W-30 motor oil....
there is a note saying "for gasoline engines" but they should add "and firearms".
love this thing. rem oil dries too quickly, wd-40 dries after the first mag, this thing never seems to dry out.
***** Not trolling, Im poor and can't afford any of those solvents... rem-oil runs out too quickly for me. Simple green and Synthetic car oil are probably gonna last me forever and they don't leave my AR-15 leaking black fluids thats stain my bed every time I put it down. and I don't have to spray the BCG every 100 rounds,

ryanjames170 I have also used white lithium grease on the rails of the bolt only. I don't know why people think they have to soak the whole bolt carrier group. Only the rails of the bolt carrier need oil or grease. The rest of the bolt carrier free floats in the gun. All the extra oil just attracts more dirt.
I can't stand the misconception that the polymer on the cases of most Russian steel cased ammo makes casings get stuck.
THIS is NOT true, the real cause of stuck casing is the fact that the steel case does not expand as much and as a result does not seal the chamber from the barrel entirely, this lets carbon blow back into the chamber wall and carbon foul it, once this carbon builds up for long enough you start getting stuck casings.
The lacquer and polymer are much higher temp rated than the gun generally gets, sure if you cook your barrel you could get it hot enough to get that polymer to melt but under normal shooting it will never melt.
So what's the solution? Better cleaning, or just don't use Russian steel cased ammo?

+Brandon Lee Okay thanks. The staff at my range told me to stay away from it because they've seen guns seize up. But the rounds are so much more affordable that I'd like to use them.

How do you not realize you left half your cleaning rod inside your barrel? That is a big mistake. I mean, you pull your rod out, half of it is missing...so you just assume it disappeared? Anyway I stopped using brass cleaning rods a while ago because I kept breaking them off near the threads.
A good quality paint brush works well for oil. You do not have to coat your aluminum in oil though. Aluminum does not rust like steel would. It does sure make the rifle look pretty though.

he may have gotten the carbon out of the barrel but he didn't touch the copper inside it. i'll call that barrel only half clean.

I don't add a solvent to my engine oil, why would I put lubricant behind my solvent on a borebrush I intend to run 5 times?
I just separate my upper and lower and put them on the bottom rack in the dishwasher through a cycle. When the cycle is done I give them a good dose of REM oil and run a bore snake through it a couple times. Easy breezy!

I spent almost 24 months in Angola only using motor oil and sometimes even used motor oil that's it none of that fancy stuff.never a problem with my RPK
