Fun fact: Both Gates McFadden and Brent Spiner are practiced tap dancers, so they improvised a lot of this scene between themselves, based on their experience.
Others say here he had a double and looking closely, it looks like someone else.
she also did some choreography for the Muppets....... so, from fur,and fluff to titanium alloys
According to the Memory Alpha article for this episode: "Gates McFadden and Brent Spiner did their own dancing in this episode, except for the overhead shots where Spiner requested a double, as he did not feel confident enough to pull it off. McFadden did the choreography, as she was a well-known Hollywood choreographer long before Next Generation. According to director Robert Wiemer, McFadden and Spiner also developed the lines in the scene, which were later accepted by the scriptwriters."
Gates was a dancer not Brent
I knew Gates McFadden was, but I genuinely had no idea Brent Spiner was. It's marvellous to learn these things about the cast, even this long after the show wrapped
*[Crusher]:* “Stop, Data!!”
*[Data]:* “Haha tap shoes go _•brrrrrrrt•.”_
"I don't want to be known as The Dancing Doctor."

"Set tap speed to warp 9.5" - Data
As impressive as how fast data learned to tap dance I find it more impressive how well Crush did it in those heels.
Normal tap shoes have larger heels for precisely this reason. They're designed for tap dancing.
@@bobpage6597 You gotta have the extra UMPH in the stomp
I mean, I would have loved for Brent Spiner to tap dance at my wedding.
Gates McFadden was a stunner.
She's still quite the looker--Picard Season 3. Her and Marina--I hope I age as gracefully (spoiler, I'm not).

I remember seeing Gates ride a unicycle one time for an interview ... she had all the beans
Really!? That's pretty cool - I always wondered how people had that much balance and coordination.
"Am I dancing, Doctor?"
The way he said that is wierdly funny to me
cheers lol
People often compare Data to someone with autism and while it's not flattering to be likened to a robot I think the crew's interaction with Data to be quite accurate. People get surprised when he doesn't react like they'd expect him to but still go on to expect him to act "normal". Once you calibrate how you interact them you'll find yourself having pretty dang normal conversations.
I do not. I find it disturbing.
People with autism definitely have emotions, for starters.
I think it’s always kind of weird when non-autistic people are like “oh this non-human character is autistic because they act weird” because they don’t really get what it’s like to actually BE autistic, but a lot of autistic fans relate to Data bc he was written with a lot of symptoms of autism. He’s very inexpressive, he has a flat affect, he doesn’t really get social cues or idioms, and his obsession with Sherlock Holmes could be interpreted as a hyperfixation/special interest.
It’s a really common thing in sci-fi to make a non-human character display symptoms of autism because they’re supposed to act weird and alien, which is, you know, kinda shitty. You can see it a lot in Star Trek with characters like Worf, Spock and of course Data. It’s a weird trope but it is nice to see characters who act like you who aren’t just there for inspiration porn or the incredibly tired trope of “this child is autistic, but he’s a GENIUS who can do complicated equations.” (Data and Spock kind of fall into the latter, but it’s different, they’re characters outside of being smart)
Great to see Gates McFadden showcasing her talent as a professional dancer. It's very unfortunate this was the only time we saw Dr Crusher as the Dancing Doctor 😉
Dancing With The Star Treks.
Dancing With the Trek Stars.
Gates McFadden was a successful choreographer, by the name Cheryl McFadden.
i think i remember reading the only reason she wasn't a ballerina or etc is because she was "too tall"
...clearly producers don't know what guys like. ;p
I'm a bit surprised that Beverly didn't understand that Data wanted to learn how to dance for the wedding, since it's Chief O'Brien's wedding, and Data is giving away Keiko. But then if she did understand that ballroom dancing would be appropriate from the get-go, we wouldn't have this amazing display of these 2 actors' talent and the punch line.
Well, Data did mention her tap-dancing award when he made the request to her, so it's only natural she'd conclude that Data wanted to learn tap-dancing.
Gates McFadden could actually tap dance... when you look at this you can see her clearly in the scene and a double for Brent Spiner LOL
Ah the Star Trek long shot doubles. I preferred it when I didn't notice them
Brent could dance too as evidenced by the close ups where he is tap dancing and he is clearly him. But he isn't as good as Gates who was a professional dancer...hence the double for the most complex steps.
@@gregquinn7817 Brent wasn´t very confident about doing all the tap dancing, and that´s the reason for a double (but only for two scenes - said by Gates McFadden. The rest of the scenes Brent is dancing). Who knows? Maybe with more time he could have done all the tap dancing, because he know to dance tap.

I like how Data asks for help from shipmates to learn something, such as in this scene with Dr. Crusher, and she is so excited. But when the lesson takes less than 5 minutes and Data does the same if not better than her she gets annoyed.
like he's not a ANDROID
@@jonnyb70 She's a noid because he's a droid?
The thing is, as seen when he just keeps doing the same move over and over when not following her, he really *doesn't* do better. He is mimicking her moves, without actually knowing what he's doing or why.
Dancing for the beans.
Can you imagine a wedding with a hundred people tap dancing poorly. I cant imagine a worse version of hell.
Data's dancing like he's full of beans, lots of beans, lots of beans, lots of beans...
What’s beans got to do with this scene?
2:57 What a beany sense of humor!
Thank you, watching this for my mental health
They must have had a lot of fun doing this scene.
"Am I dancing Doctor?" lol
I always see people criticize this episode for being too...trivial (I guess). But it's just fun--it's a fun and funny episode watching Data just living his life, seeing his friends, trying to understand how people work. And watching this scene with McFadden tap dancing (she's a professional dancer) and Spiner (who also practiced dance) is one of the more enjoyable moments in the series.
I like the idea that after Picard S3, Beverly and Data go tap dancing together. Here, Data is supremely talented at picking up moves Beverly makes, but doesn't have the emotional instinct required to make creative choices in his movements. Now that he does, it's nice to imagine that he can make the most of that with Beverly and genuinely find pleasure and joy in tap dancing with her.
That made me smile and is very sweet. I like the idea that after season 3, Alex Kurtzman retires.
I would have let Data walk out of there with his new tap dancing skills while wishing him the best of luck at the wedding.
I really wished Data had tap danced at the wedding.
All of the sudden, Bryce Dallas Howard sprinting in heels during Jurrassic World doesn't seem so crazy, if Gates McFadden can so easily _tap dance_ in them.
Looks like the time spent at Casa Mañana payed off for Brent.
I don't know how they didn't include this in the Chris pine Star trek.
Dr crusher looks younger with each passing year,,,,or am i Just getting older!?!?!
Well, your not getting younger :)
Getting older sucks, but it still beats the only available alternative.
@@paulmccloud9395
What about his not getting younger?
You know how looks fade over time? Well, look at pictures of Gates McFadden now. 🤯 She's a temporal anomaly.
It looks to me like some of the most difficult part of that was done by a double for data. I could be wrong, but he looked different.
As an old man who has had a lifelong fascination with music and dance, I always love watching a hoofer, no matter the venue. Sammy Davis Jr. was the King, Gregory Hines was a Master, but Gates McFadden was so very good. Love watching a pro doing her stuff.
2:45 Considering that Miles O'Brien is irish there should be tapdancing😂!
Weird. He asks for dance lessons, and without asking what sort of dance or why he wants it, she goes straight to tap?
He specifically mentioned her competing in jazz and tap competitions when she asked why he's asking her to teach him.
Huh... "Isn't It Romantic?" sounds an awful lot like TNG theme.
Makes you wonder, how does Data not know what kind of dancing he needs to learn? Doesn’t he have the internet?
with a body like hers no wonder jean luc fell in love with pretty eyes hair
Awesome
He's a machine!
lol..Nice reference...But they're in the holodeck not the matrix
0:30 and thus begins the most often-used footage in just about every Star-Trek-tribute dance-song AMV on UA-cam. I usually have them dancing to the Pointer Sisters' "I'm So Excited" in my head whenever I view this scene.
1:41 (SPOILER ALERT) Body-double switcheroo time... well, at least for Brent Spiner... maybe. I'd like to think his body double here was Gregory Hines. Goddamn, I really miss that guy...
2:38 "They don't do a lot of tap-dancing at weddings."
"Why?"
"Because it pretty much died out as a significant performing art around the same time as vaudeville."

The body switch from Data to Lore occurred at 1:41. You'll understand why in the next clip :)
Thing is, tap was never common other than for shows of some sort.
gates looks kot in heels.
He is so wasting her time and he must know it.
Is he looking for socializing for something? 😄
One Person has never done this before and thus downvoted it.
There are few things in this world I hate more than tap dancing
He’s going to look a right bellend at this wedding! 😂
Could data not do as he has with music and just download some dance techniques?
And ask the computer what types of dance occur at weddings.
This was all so much forced/inconsistent writing with Data.
She was always a hottie!!!
Does Data always walk around with taps on his service boots?
“Computer run isn’t it beanie”
Not a lot of tap dancing at weddings? I guess she's never been to an Irish wedding, which I find that hard to believe with a name like McFadden
"They don't do much tap dancing at weddings."
"Why?"
"Because tap dancing fucking sucks, Data, that's why. It sucked three centuries ago, and it sucks now."
I hate this scene so much. They desperately wanted in the episode for comedic purposes, but it makes no sense. It is just as annoying as those scenes when Data didn't know that Picard is French or what a homemaker did in the 20th century.
The show often found ways to include the casts other real life tallents on the show. It's why Picard is often in theatre style scenes on the holodeck, Riker playing instruments etc.
@ Rick Simon
I didn't find it comedic really. The scene can be appreciated as yet another episode in Data's journey to become more human and another episode in the care and enjoyment that his crew mates took in participating in and nurturing Data's development.
A pity that you see the scene as cheap and frivolous. It's not what I see at all.
@@ClearOutSamskaras
Neither "cheap" nor "frivolous" applies. Lazy writing does. There is simply no conceivable way for Data to make this mistake.
@@ricksimon9867 Maybe he chose to build some classes of knowledge the old fashioned way instead of assimilating from a central database.
@@ricksimon9867 What mistake? Oh, you mean not knowing what kind of dancing would be customary at a (human) wedding?
Cringey scene. They really toiled to write meaningful scenes for Dr Crusher and Counselor Troi...😁
Your opinion is cringe.
