Went on this the other day and the first ride took me by surprise, lot quicker than it looks and the air time on parts of it are amazing. This is my new favourite ride there and I would say the best ride at the park.
Air time is achieved just after passing the top of a hill (whether it's the 'hill lift' (the chain pull up bit) or normal hills) on a roller coaster at great speed. Your body (and probably your mind) momentarily wants to/expects to keep on going up but the coaster is now dragging you down causing a momentary equilibrium -a feeling of some weightlessness in the heart. However - riders towards the front of the coaster don't get great speed at the top of a hill lift because, of course, they're not usually going fast - a chain's been dragging them slowly up and, even when they start descending , the rest of the coaster they're hauling behind them slows them down because the rest of the coaster is still going UP on a braking chain at that point. However, once the vast majority of the coaster is going down , the back end of the coaster is now being dragged towards and over the top of that hill at greater (much greater?) speed than the first carriage had been. Does this mean that the front of a coaster is the least intensive experience? Not necessarily - there's a potentially scary psychological element in being the first person to take the plunge - if a very rare case of track obstruction happens then the first carriage is most likely to collide with it first. Plus once the coaster is at the midpoint or base of the hill drop, the front carriage/s now have the weight of all the other carriages bearing down behind them.
As somebody with foot problems,it is 100% worth the wait. I went today and it’s by far my favourite coaster I have done ever. And it also took me an hour as well.
I went to Alton towers in June 2018 and waited around 180 minutes for the ride. It was worth it as most rides that day were between 120-180 as it was a Saturday to waiting 180 for a new ride was ok. The ride is great and I can tell you it’s a lot faster than it may seem. I was like the 3rd back row with my friend and it was probably better. It was super fast and the part where the water gets you is surprising. It’s like condensation and units actually quite refreshing. Also the bit at the end actually made me jump because I didn’t expect it . Super great ride !
I was literally having a panic attack in the queue and I’m like the biggest baby on the planet and I promise it’s fine I would go on it again and trust me I hallucinate on rollercoasters
This has got to be one of my favourite rides at Alton towers, it’s just so detailed with everything to the sculptures to the story, I’d highly recommend this to everyone!
@@Lewis07-29 I would highly recommend wicker man, I would maybe try out the smaller rides first to get the adrenaline out of the way, it isnt a very good first ride if you’re nervous. it looks very intimidating and they hype it up whilst you’re waiting in line (the theming is beautiful but there’s a lot of “this ride will literally kill you and burn your remains lol” which made me quite nervous on my first ride) but overall the ride itself is very smooth for a wooden coaster and not as intense as some of the other rides (smiler, oblivion etc)
I went on this yesterday for the first time ever and it’s the best coaster I have done so far. My dad said the start of the first major drop (Not the one at the very start) was the quickest part, but since he has not been on it for a long time he forgot that the ENTIRE THING IS QUICK. So when me,my mum,my dad,my uncle and my dads friend were on we were on the ride of our life’s. Me and my mum were just screaming for the entirety of the drop because it feels 100x faster then what it actually is,my uncle was laughing because of how quick it felt,my dads friend was laughing since my uncle was laughing and my dad realised that the entire ride was intense and thought I was gonna hate it. At the end I felt amazing and thought it was the best ride there by far,my mum also agreed. 10/10 coaster, worth the 1 hour wait no joke.
I hopped aboard yesterday and it’s without doubt the best Woodie the UK has ever seen. It’s amazingly quick; runs as smooth anyone would hope for and integrates the firery elements so succinctly. Alton have the biggest success on there hands!
Are you mad , Kashmire? It's not even as intense as the generations-old The Grand National at Blackpool. And want lots of banked bends? Just go on steel bobsleigh ride Avalanche at Blackpool afterwards. Megafobia won't be worried in terms of extremity. Wicker Man should have been at least half as much again as long than it is with a second hill lift for drama.
I love how this park takes large and popular coasters that are usually used in large rides like Val raven, Raptor and Superman ultimate flight, and turn them into small terrain coasters. Amazing.
You do know that Oblivion, Nemesis and Air/Galactica all came before Valravn, Raptor and Superman Ultimate Flight? Oblivion and Air were even the very first of their kind, the prototype if you will. However, I do agree that the treeline height restriction does force some really amazing creativity into the coaster layouts! 👌
On the actual effigy, it's kind of like an LED screen effect, which looks cool from a distance. When I first heard of the ride, I was so confused about that mixture of flammable materials and fire 😂 But yeah, it's completely safe, and has an amazing atmosphere :)
I am watching this in the queue I am terrified. XD Edit: it was really fast and slightly painful but it does not distract from the main experience. Pretty good.

Danielle Dewitt The fire is all controlled. They can retract the fire effects at any time. Plus it wouldn’t even touch the coaster as the Wickerman itself is not wooden, it’s made of steel. They even stated that the some of the fire effects were real in one of their faqs. You can go search it up.
Danielle Dewitt You can stick to what you believe, but all I know based on what I’ve researched is that the shoulder fire is real, the Wickerman is steel, the fire inside it is fake and the coaster is safe from the real fire.
Went on it today. A lot faster then it looks in the video. I’ve rode loads of rollercoaster stateside but for me this is up there with the best that I’ve been on.

Blew me away! Expected a smooth slow coaster and it was anything but! As intense as Smiler but in different ways! The turns were insane and had plenty of air on the back seats at least! Best ride and theme at the park and I was originally thinking it was just a revamped mine train.
Oh my god I feel the same way. I was scheduled to be at the park right now for an overnight stay. Unfortanetly due to current circumstances I can't be there! :(
I waited 45 mins all on my own cos my mate wasn't feeling well. Well worth it indeed. To pass the time you can count the bolts holding it together!!! I lost count at 378 billion. XD
Went on this several times yesterday (perfect time of year for an empty park!) It's a lot steeper and tighter than it looks on camera, the whole ride is on the side of a hill so when it looks like it is going flat it's actually either going up or down. Absolutely killer in the back row, and I mean that literally, it feels like it is trying to kill you on the corners before the first go through the centrepiece, it pulls some pretty serious Gs and shudders a lot. That makes it more fun though!
I went on this a few weeks ago! I didn’t know what to expect from it, but I was so surprised by how fast it was! Definitely one of my favourite rides of the day.
Bit like a bit of Blackpool's The Grand National. It's a good 'family' coaster that's short, with a weak ending. And smooth enough to not feel painful despite how it looks. There are one or two dramatic moments but you can also comfortably (too comfortably for experienced riders) enjoy it in places as a runaway mine train. Enjoy the theming. I think more could have been done with the track e.g. a section could have come off the tracks (temporarily become a wooden tube bobsleigh ride) like Knoebel's Flying Turns (closest UK steel equivalent being Blackpool's Avalanche). And I'd have put in 2 hill lifts (second leading in to a wooden tube) and made the ride longer, even if the second lift was small it adds to the theatrical drama.
No, it’s not a amity ride, there s fire all around th ride and there’s a demonic satanic hidden room in the queue that you get locked in, the actual ride itself is extremely fast, it feels almost as fast as Rita in my opinion
@@coastercrazy6557 Noooo dont take icon away from me ;-;. I live near blackpool and icon is my fav ride there. If it moves to alton towers itll take me 2 hours to get there, no thanks xD
It's freed-up Smiler though! That thing was previously un-rideable due to the 2 hour queue. Today it was anywhere between 40 - 60 minutes and I went on it twice... TWICE!!!
The first (and only) time I rode this, i was luck enough to get put on the front, it was raining so my face went numb. Let me tell you, it doesn’t half throw you around!
This rollarcoaster is way faster than it looks, it has very secure seat belts to make sure you won't fall out. Although I am quite disappointed in the staff here, I went on the wicker man and I got my turn on the rollarcoaster and my legs were close to eachother thinking that's how the seat belts go, the woman put the.seat belt down onto my legs and my legs wasn't right.. luckily my family member and I told the staff to.stop therkde immediately to fix it out. I am disappointed but very grateful they stopped the ride, if they didn't fix it, I'd have major injuries on my legs because the ride was extreme fast.. Although this ride was stunning! Also, the que is huge! It takes a lot of time to get on the ride, trust me its kind of worth the wait but not..
This video makes it look tame.. no hate on the video but i watched this video and then i rode this coaster a few hours ago... ONE OF THE SCARIEST IF NOT THE SCARIEST AT ALTON TOWERS! It goes SOOO fast& them drops are quite intense. I cried...
going on this in the dark makes it 10 times better you cant see whats coming so you don't expect any turns been on this twice gotta say dark is way better also looks slow on video but in irl you cant keep your skin on XD
anyone else get that horrible smell when the smoke sprays in the little tunnel at the end? i was always sat in the place where the smoke sprayed straight onto and my hair and face stunk like it for the rest of the day. we rode it first thing.
I have went on this ride twice one weekend and it’s so much fun. It’s a lot faster than it looks, and the turns are really rickety sometimes, but it’s a well themed experience throughout
Yeah this ride is rather infamous for hauling fat ass the entire time. Same with Cedar Point's Steel Vengeance. 2018 was a damn good year for wood-frame/wooden coasters.
No matter how much my stomach drops on the ride (which is the only reason I feel afraid of roller coasters) I can't seem to make myself feel afraid of the ride. Weird... Anyway I'm going back on the ride when the park opens up again so maybe I will this time???
I love wicker man it made me scared yet want to ride again my favourite colour is orange which is incorporated into the ride a lot and also like many other people like willow or the pyro I LOVE FIRE it crackles its ambient and it eats away at things and the Scottish tribal burning is done so well here also is it just me or does the grassy bed shrouded by trees at the top of the biggest drop at 2:11 look like a nice place to sleep minus the loud roller-coaster
This ride looks awesome if not a little underwhelming but the video is top notch. Love the layout design, hate the name (and yes I know the history of Wickerman)
Amirah Nahar The beornen are a group of people who surround the woods of Alton Towers. You are invited to their celebration but it is revealed that you are the sacrifice to the Wickerman and you are to be burned and encased in his soul.
I was on the back the first week it opened and it stopped for about two minutes in the dark, I could hear the other train going doing and I thought it was going to crash into us. Wanted to get out.
When I got to that part I was getting flash backs since th13teen got me off coasters for a while, but my dad behind me told me that it does not do a th13teen drop.
I rode this at Alton Towers and this was the most incredible adrenaline filled experience I have ever experienced. If you are in alton towers and are unsure what to ride, if you are over 1.2 metres tall, give it a ride!!!
I agree. Went on it today and all I did was scream and scream throughout the entire ride,I really worried my mum and she thought I was scared while doing it,but I absolutely loved it and it’s my favourite ride.
who else was waiting in the line so scared and almost shet theirselves about the drop, but when they were on it they were quaking about how boring the drop was🤦♀️😂😂😂😂🤷♀️
Went on this the other day and the first ride took me by surprise, lot quicker than it looks and the air time on parts of it are amazing. This is my new favourite ride there and I would say the best ride at the park.
Like the wooden coasters at blackpool, going over a hump you really feel it in your stomach. You dont even need speed or height.
Dr23rippa the wooden coasters at blackpool are only fun in the front seat. Everything else and you'll get a migraine and have your legs crushed.
wrathchild68 ikr I went on it it’s actually faster then it looks (not as fast as Rita though lol) and the bumps in the track are so fun
My opinion second best behind smiler. I been there all day today lol
wrathchild68 the airtime bits scared me a lot I kept thinking if this bar lifts I’ll be flying
I got to ride this in total darkness when it first opened due to massive queue times and British summer time not having started, Intense!

I'M SOOOOOO EXCITED I'M GOING THIS SEPTEMBER!!!!!! I'M DEFO RIDING THIS!!!! :3 Edit: The ride was amazing! And thx for hearting my comment! ❤
Same! I'm going there tomorrow and I'm sure it'll be great!
@@nookie8720 no way, Me too!
@@paddydoestech Oh wow was it good? I loved it!
Still can’t believe the speed of this thing 🔥 cannot wait to jump back on it again ......welcome chosen few 🔥😁
What would be sick is if icon was at Alton towers
Sheeeeiiit!!!! Back in the day if the Druids stuck you in one of those bad boys, it meant your ass!
The grand national is much more thrilling than this but the WM is amazing aswell
Finally an actual good wicker man POV lol. Good job man! :)
Man, this looks awesome! I recently went to Alton Towers but unfortunately I couldn’t ride it as the queue was two hours long! 😵
It's freed-up Smiler though! That thing was previously un-rideable due to the 2 hour queue. Today it was anywhere between 40 - 60 minutes and I went on it twice... TWICE!!!
It's a fun ride. Great theming. Transitions are not aggressive but they are smooth.
The first (and only) time I rode this, i was luck enough to get put on the front, it was raining so my face went numb. Let me tell you, it doesn’t half throw you around!
Looks like a great ride. Love the flaming wicker man.
Who’s here from the channel 4 documentary ??
Me aha

Mtn D3w I have not watched it yet
Me😂 “Inside Alton Towers”

Lol back seat coming over that lift looks fun 😂
And was fun
Looks perfect. Not too fast, no loops. Seems pretty gentle. Might actually ride it someday
It’s not very gentle icl you get whipped about and there’s some pretty heavy lateral forces
Was more disturbed of the smell of insense than the speed
This video makes it look tame.. no hate on the video but i watched this video and then i rode this coaster a few hours ago... ONE OF THE SCARIEST IF NOT THE SCARIEST AT ALTON TOWERS! It goes SOOO fast& them drops are quite intense. I cried...
going on this in the dark makes it 10 times better you cant see whats coming so you don't expect any turns been on this twice gotta say dark is way better also looks slow on video but in irl you cant keep your skin on XD
Love it... Smooth woodie with great momentum and airtime. A+
anyone else get that horrible smell when the smoke sprays in the little tunnel at the end? i was always sat in the place where the smoke sprayed straight onto and my hair and face stunk like it for the rest of the day. we rode it first thing.
I didn't get that but the station STANK. Other people were complaining too.
omg this ride legit looks so good
It really is
I went yesterday, unfortunately didn't get to go on this because it had a 2 hour queue 💀
I have went on this ride twice one weekend and it’s so much fun. It’s a lot faster than it looks, and the turns are really rickety sometimes, but it’s a well themed experience throughout
people saying its a lot quicker than it looks
me: *shit*
Yeah this ride is rather infamous for hauling fat ass the entire time. Same with Cedar Point's Steel Vengeance. 2018 was a damn good year for wood-frame/wooden coasters.
No matter how much my stomach drops on the ride (which is the only reason I feel afraid of roller coasters) I can't seem to make myself feel afraid of the ride. Weird... Anyway I'm going back on the ride when the park opens up again so maybe I will this time???
I love this ride, but it really has no business being that fast. 😂
Did anyone else watch the Channel 4 documentaries on Alton Towers
Meeee
Meep
UniqueGaming Reed meeee
Danielle Dewitt no it isnt, that’s his Channel name. Hun don’t correct others when your life’s a mess :)
Danielle Dewitt you just said Reed is spelt real huh
I’ve been on the wicker man before! It was just so fun and I absolutely LOVED it! I’m 10 btw and i suffered no unhurried from the ride at all.
GCI and Intamin: How much fire do you want on Wicker Man and Colossos
Merlin: y e s
Arguably the best attraction at the park!!! 👍👍
This ride looks awesome if not a little underwhelming but the video is top notch. Love the layout design, hate the name (and yes I know the history of Wickerman)
J Will The ride is so much better when you’re on it compared to videos. And the pre-show is outstanding
J Will what’s the back story??
Amirah Nahar The beornen are a group of people who surround the woods of Alton Towers. You are invited to their celebration but it is revealed that you are the sacrifice to the Wickerman and you are to be burned and encased in his soul.
James Norman
Thank you... you managed to say it in a little less than a paragraph. I dont know if I could have done that.
James Norman yikes okay but thanks
3 times today with the family on Wickerman, class ride!
3:30 I thought it was gonna be like th13teen when I was on it
Alton towers #1 fan it is pretty scary in there when you are towards the back of the train
I was on the back the first week it opened and it stopped for about two minutes in the dark, I could hear the other train going doing and I thought it was going to crash into us. Wanted to get out.
I was in the third row and the fire blasted out right in my face and scared the shit out of me
There Is never gonna be a wooden drop track.
When I got to that part I was getting flash backs since th13teen got me off coasters for a while, but my dad behind me told me that it does not do a th13teen drop.
Rode this today. Absolutely amazing!!
Glad you enjoyed!
I feel like this is a ride you have to ride in the back ? Abit tame
The back row is arguably the best place to sit, however it does feel fast on-ride wherever you're sat!
It's too smooth to feel particularly 'fast' when it only goes at 44mph.
The front still gives you speed and airtime and I can confirm since I went on it today on the front seats.
This roller coaster was an amazing addition to alton Towers 4 yrs ago
Agree!
I’ve been on it help me it’s so scary
In my opinion this is hands down the best ride at Alton Towers
Nerd Loser Some say this, Nemesis or Smiler, but Smiler is king
How scary is this going on it tomorrow 😬
(Edit) never mind the queue was too long
Not scary, but it is quality.
What was the queue

Rode this last month it is my second favourite behind Nemesis Reborn🔥
I’m doing the Macarena when I get on this
late but i lowkey wanna do that with you
Can I come too
I rode this at Alton Towers and this was the most incredible adrenaline filled experience I have ever experienced. If you are in alton towers and are unsure what to ride, if you are over 1.2 metres tall, give it a ride!!!
Trust me this looks slow but when your on it it’s that fast you can hardly talk
Which other fast rides have you ever been on?
Honey no I couldn’t even scream so I held my breath oh my picture not the picture 😂😂
Picnicl she has propberly been on Rita now that’s fast XD
I agree. Went on it today and all I did was scream and scream throughout the entire ride,I really worried my mum and she thought I was scared while doing it,but I absolutely loved it and it’s my favourite ride.
Man my favourite ride it was very fast then I thought. My reaction was weee!
who else was waiting in the line so scared and almost shet theirselves about the drop, but when they were on it they were quaking about how boring the drop was🤦♀️😂😂😂😂🤷♀️
BaileyTheAmazing I was crying In the line
Best ride in the park!
I went on this when I was little and I cried the entire time
