I clicked because I saw my girl Lucy. I stayed watching because I saw drag queens. It's sad that his mother couldn't embrace his business when he was alive but in a way she saw that she could become a mother to those that need one. It's so important to have heartfelt movies even if they seem cheesy. Let us enjoy the cheese!
I think you all missed the point of her saving his dreams even after death because she failed as a mother and lost him due to her prejudice and blinded way. As a Christian, I think it is a good film to show to parents who discard their children over the choices they make. In the end we live the life we are meant to, not the ones our parents pick for us.
_"Different songs. Same divas. Some of the same wigs too."_ As someone who used to be Southern Baptist before I became a Christian... I can tell you that is so true.
Had a friend who did drag and years later his mother accepted it and actually tried to hook him up with her handsome hairdresser. The hairdresser said, Ms So&So you know I’m straight don’t you? She replied, so are noodles until you stick them in water. Lol. This was South Georgia. 😊
I think it's a great movie. So many people didn't appreciate but it made me cry. It's deep. It's the story of a mother who lost her son prematurely without the chance to reconcile with him. She then tries to honor his son's legacy, even if it means adapting to a world that's very different from hers. She eventually comes to appreciate her son's greatness and she realizes just how much she missed out by estranging him because of how different he was. When she sings "Total eclipse of the heart" she is clearly reconciling spiritually with her son, making amends for what she did and honoring his existence, queerness and all. It's at the same time a tribute and an apology from a mother to her dead son. It definitely hit me in the feels. Some songs may have been clichés, some might think that it's not an original movie, but tbh it is original. It's not just about a conservative person converting to liberal ways. It's about a mother-son relationship. I can't think of other movies right now that tackle the theme of a mother losing her son after estranging him and then trying to reconcile with him by honoring his legacy. Even if there might be other movies similar to this, I don't think that this movie feels like a cliché. We constantly see movies about superheroes that fight supervillains from the DC Universe and we don't call them unoriginal even though they've always been done, and we call a movie about a grieving mother that tries to reconcile with his son after death unoriginal or stale? I find it ridiculous. If you found this movie stale or unoriginal then you probably failed to understand the depth of a mother's sorrow and regret after losing her child and her willingness to celebrate him in an effort to honor his existence. Go watch your movies with car chasing, gun battles and other cheap tricks if you find them more entertaining. I'd choose emotional depth over cheap action/thriller/horror movies any day...
You have to reconcile with your child while he/she is alive and not wait till he/she dies. I don't think it's original and maybe it is a moving film indeed, and yes all sorts of things happen in life. Yet I still find it a bit inappropriate when they show her overcome her bias and become a better person only because her son died. It also triviliazes the tragedy of his death as if it's the ''price'' for her development. Also, in real life it's not as sugary cause no matter what you do you won't be able to ''reconcile'' with your deceased loved on, you will forever feel guilty for not doing it sooner. ''celebrate'' my ass, he's dead, and no amount of cheesiness will fix this.
Also, sweetheart, you are preaching tolerancy yet you are not tolerant yourself. Just because some people didn't like this movie, doesn't necessarily mean they like ''cheap tricks''. Maybe they also love emotional depth but didn't find it here because guess what - PEOPLE ARE DIFFERENT. Cheesiness and vain pursuits of dead son's fogiveness is not ''deep'' for everyone. Get off your high horse, do better.
@@yevgeniyaleshchenko849 I appreciate how real you kept it, I get your point. Maybe I really was a bit arrogant, I was mad about the reviews, so I got carried away. I don’t think that necessarily all action movies are cheap but I do think that the reviews about this movie were too harsh while there are many other movies (super hero movies etc etc) that often follow the same template and don’t get criticised nearly as much for not being original. Btw aside from this, this movie moved me. I don’t have the arrogance to state that this movie has to move everyone or that if someone doesn’t like it they lack emotional depth. I don’t think that the mother was an exemplary mother, it’s obvious that the movie was pretty tragic, as the son died prematurely without reconciling with the mother. But these things happen in real life, you don’t always get to reconcile with your loved ones while they are still alive. In this movie I don’t think that the death of the son was trivialised, it was depicted as a tragedy, the mother suffered greatly from it. I think that his death was such a powerful shock to her that it pushed her to do something about it and try to understand his son’s life/world better, to at least be able to get a grasp of what she missed during those years. She got to know his friends, his world and eventually she even managed to appreciate it and respect it. It’s true that sometimes in life a shock or even a tragedy can push you to let go of your prejudice and explore something that goes beyond your comfort zone. It doesn’t always have to work that way, but it happens in some cases, like in this movie. The reconciliation may not have physically happened, but spiritually the mother finally reconciled with his son, understood him better than she ever did while he was alive and she even found the strenght to honour his legacy. I think that for her being able to do that was important. Regardless of whether you are believer or not, whether our loved ones go on and get to see our “change of hearts” or not, being able to make peace with what happened is something valuable, even if our loved one is dead. Many sons/daughters witness their parents’ death without being able to reconcile with them while they are alive, and sometimes they make peace with the mistakes that were made in their relationships (on both sides) years after the parent’s passing, but it still matters a lot for their peace of mind. I think that the same goes when a parent loses their child unexpectedly.
Rush B. Sure kid. Ru Paul’s $60million nett worth doesn’t seem to agree with you, but you be you and keep watching whole trailers to movies you pretend you believe nobody wants to watch. Ncaaaw xoxo
I’m in my 40s and I remember hearing about stories from the 80s during the AIDS crisis. Parents wouldn’t come see their sons even when they were dying. So sad. I will see this movie, looks good.
I’m still gonna watch it, cause I don’t want Hollywood to feel like a concept about the queens isn’t bankable. I mean, aside from The Birdcage and To Wong Foo, there haven’t been many productions that I know of.
If you're interested in this movie and don't mind reading subtitles/captions, you guys should check out Die Beautiful. It's a Filipino film. Its here on UA-cam but I haven't check if it's legit or if the video has a good quality. Sorry. But the story's good.
Stage Mother (2020) Jacki Weaver, Lucy Liu and Adrian Grenier. Also in the cast are Mya Taylor, Allister MacDonald, Oscar Moreno and Jackie Beats in their supporting roles.
Ok but seriously SO happy to see JACKIE BEAT OMG SO HAPPY FOR HER! She's seriously really brilliant, if you like drag then you'll love Jackie! She's a legend!
I loved this film. It’s not for everyone and in terms of plot etc It does feel weak however if your looking for something fun, exciting yet heartwarming then this is the film for you
I immediately thought of Momma T!ts who performs in old Puerto Vallarta , Mexico. Not really my scene but stayed there for a week and it certainly has a special vibe. And a lot of little dogs...
The delivery of "Oh my Lord, I've inherited a gay bar." is _priceless_. I wasn't familiar with Jackie Weaver prior to this trailer, but in less than 3 minutes I'm already enthralled with her performance. Peak genteel "under-reacting" southern manners. 🙂
“I’m not looking at our son through your frightened eyes” shook me
That was a wonderful sentence
I'm trans, I live in the bible belt, my parents are baptist: I heard that line and I broke the fuck down crying.

Oh my goodness.. For some reason, your comment made me tears... Thank you for that warm comment!! I'll def watch this!

You should really see 'why women kill', not bad at all.
@@22espec I wanted to say the exact same thing... shes so amazing in it

Love watching Elementary just cause of her.
1:34 “What do you know about running a drag bar? I’m a Southern Baptist Choir Mistress! Different Songs! Same Divas! Some of the Same Wigs Too!”
Yes, we all watched the trailer
“My secret ingredient is resentment.” Great line
I already love this movie
A southern, probably pretty conservative, baptist choir director takes over a drag bar from her deceased gay son.
That is definitely original.
Straight Savior trope.
@@TheCaliforniaboy1 Explain. This is shocking to read.
Conservative white person converted to Liberal ways. Hardly original.

no irony here

and im so here for it yass
The trailer gave me a sad feeling.. knowing what the mother doing after her child is gone.. It feels like a redemption movie, her redemption..
