  • I pulled the front differential to investigate the discolored oil and to folow up with my efforts to build a reliable diff.

    So I have a pathfinder, similar to the xterra, passenger side bearing on the axle entry seems to have gone out, caught it relatively quick, is it easy to replace sorta or is it recommended to just do all the bearings in the diff?

    Nice video. Thank you! One question: What did you use to re-seal the diff cover. I have an 11 with the R180 and a leaky diff cover. In looking around it seems there is no seal there.....just sealant applied but I'm not sure which sealant to use. Sorry, I know it's and amateur question!!!

    thank you for the video friend.. im getting ready to do a 6inch rough country lift on my frontier.. if im not mistaken the suspension and dif. are identical as the xterra..

      glad to help bud. They are not the same but share the same mounting points. For the R180 front dif you have, you will just pull the CVs out instead of unbolting them.

    So I am planning on pulling my 205 out of my truck and rebuilding it with a revolution gear master overhaul kit, there is a ton of side to side play in the pinion shaft, any tips or tricks for removing and replacing bearings?

    • @TheSmittysGarage
      @TheSmittysGarage  3 роки тому

      Use a bearing separator kit to remove the bearings or cut them off. I would invest in a press for sure and sleeve long enough to press on the pinion bearing. It sucks hammering these on without damaging the bearing cage.

    Would this removal be in any way similar for an R108 2nd gen frontier? Mines toast... I'll need to replace it myself.

      @TheSmittysGarage  Рік тому +1

      yes, except you won't have to remove bolts for the flanges. I would drain the fluid first so it won't spill out of the cv inlets.

      @@TheSmittysGarage Awesome, thanks! Not sure there is hardly any fluid even left but I'll drain it again.

    are those isolation mounts in it removable or are they pressed in?

    • @TheSmittysGarage
      @TheSmittysGarage  3 роки тому

      Pressed in. Im actually in search of some poly bushings. Between the axle stubs and mounts there's a lot bouncing around. I need to measure and see what's out there.

      @@TheSmittysGarage Thx for the fast reply! I have a drivetrain vibration on an 06' Xterra and I've ruled out the rear axle, both props, and tires/wheels. My next idea was to pull the half shafts and front prop to isolate the front diff and see if either that or the shafts are the source. Do you know if it's possible to pull those shafts without disconnecting the control arms? Your video suggests one way would be to pull the front diff out and then pull the shafts out of the wheels, but if there's clearance I'd like to avoid removing the diff before I've had a chance to eliminate or confirm that the vibration is coming from the front end. The vibe frequency is tied to vehicle speed, exists when in neutral and with engine off/coasting. Feels like a bad prop joint, but I've eliminated both of those.

      @@ChrisWilson-em1kp when does it vibrate?

      @@TheSmittysGarage I suspect all the time, but when it becomes apparent to me is right about 30 mph. I've posted about it in newx forums but so far we're all stumped. Today I pulled the half shafts, put the wheels back on and drove it, same same, so it's not those nor the front diff. Wheel bearings don't show any sign of wear. I have a few other parts to swap out due to worn bushings, so I'll see how things are after that.
