Actually, it's BECOMING fairly common amongst young people who don't care about speaking properly. But it is NOT common in general and never has been. It's always been considered a bit of a speech impediment. Now it's like Valley Girl talk and everyone's copying everyone else just to be trendy.
First sign of old age: criticizing "young people", as a whole group as if "old[er] people" aren't worthy of criticism. Better idea? If you have that put down need/urge, do it on an individual basis. Best idea? Use encouragement and feel the humility that comes when you realize that you, too, are quite imperfect.
