He's canon in 7 Japanese continuities. 2nd Godzilla is the most famous one who appeared in 1955 sequel. He's gone from villain, anti-hero to a complete good guy. In 1985, Toho decided to reboot Godzilla, make a direct sequel to 1954 movie while ignoring all the sequels. This is 2nd continuity, the "Heisei" following a new evil Godzilla who appears 30 years after the death of 1954 one. We don't know who Godzilla's parents were or the relation between 1954 and the 2nd one, other than being the member of same species but we do know Godzilla had a son in three different continuities. In Hollywood, the 9th continuity "Monsterverse", Godzilla has an ancestor called Dagon. His skeleton was shown in 2014 movie's opening. He fought MUTO Prime in 11 century BC who killed him by laying eggs inside of him. From those eggs came the two MUTOs, the villains of 2014 movie.
