WORST CASE SCENARIO - Seska back from the dead in probably Voyager's best Holodeck episode. Funniest line: "I guess we should've known Seska wouldn't let a little thing like death stop her from getting even".
Worst Case Scenario is one of my favourite "comfort food" episodes. It starts off with a bit of mystery / tease before you realize what's going on, then moves into some pretty good fun, before turning into an actual story with a villain and lives at stake. Besides, the banter between Paris and Tuvok when talking about the program in the mess hall is top tier.
Voyager had some other great holodeck episodes that also could've been on the list: "Worst Case Scenario" - This is one of my top 10 favorite Voyager episodes. B'Elanna Torres finds a "what-if" holographic scenario of a Maquis mutiny where the main character is an accomplice. Things get extremely crazy when the holographic Ensign Seska begins to terrorize the Voyager crew. This episode features the return of Martha Hackett as the villainess Seska and Chakotay as the villain of the holographic novel. It shows personality in how each of the characters describes how they play the role as the accomplice and reveals Seska's hidden feelings about the Voyager crew before her departure in Season 1. "Author, Author" - The Doctor writes a holodeck program featuring the Voyager crew in questionable roles as a metaphor of his challenging life as a hologram. The plot is very similar to the awesome TNG episode "The Measure of a Man" where the Doctor's existence as a hologram is challenged by a publisher, whom claims the Doctor has no rights to his own publication. This is yet another episode that shows the Doctor's growth over the show in that he has become a sentient being whom should be treated as an equal. It also features calls out to the oppressed by referencing the EMH Mk. I's changed role from holographic doctors to dilithium miners rather than equal sentients due to obsolescence. "Flesh and Blood" - A sequel to "The Killing Game" that has effects in "Author, Author." The Hirogen holographic technology has produced sentient holograms intent on destroying anyone who might get in their way of finding a homeworld. What I love about this episode is it shows more about how the Doctor has grown as a character by betraying the Voyager crew only to later help them stop a massacre when he realizes his mistake. Others I truly enjoyed include "The Killing Game" (Hirogen play as Nazis in a WW2 French town featuring the Voyager crew as their prey) and "Spirit Folk" (Irish holograms become self-aware and believe the Voyager crew to be evil spirits).
While it isn't technically a holosuite episode, I think 'Nemesis' deserves an honorable mention. It isn't just my favorite 'Voyager' episode, it is actually one of my favorite episodes of television ever.
I think LaForge making a holo version of a brilliant scientist, giving her a personality, saving the enterprise, and falling in love with her only to find out that the real scientist was nothing like what he fell in love with was one of my favorite pieces of holodeck stories. It was amazing to watch and heart wrenching at the same time.
Ship in a Bottle, The Killing Game, Flesh and Blood I will admit that It's Only a Paper Moon did not come to mind at first, but it absolutely deserved to be on this list. Hollow Pursuits, Our Man Bashir are also excellent choices.
I would place "Ship in a Bottle" as #2 for the simple fact that I thought that they had actually allowed Moriarty to become real and that he had indeed left the Holodeck.

I have watched Star Trek for as long as I can remember. Now at the age of 45 and the father of 3 beautiful children, I have rewatched all the series and movies many times but no episode effects me more than Real Life. Having 2 girls, 9 and 5 and a 1 year old boy changes how you look at everything. As a young man watching this episode I appreciated the acting and storytelling. As a father I find it extremely difficult to watch. I know how it ends and have seen it many times. The difference is that now watching it, especially the scene when Belle dies, is too much for me. I love my children so much and can easily see my own 9 year old in that scene as she too is extremely outgoing and a bit of an adrenaline seeker. It amazes me time and time again how Star Trek shows the true side of emotion and life. It is one of the very best episodes of television and brings me to tears every single time.

One of my favorite episodes was the one where Barclay got zapped by a ray and became a genius and in later on in the episode whenever the Enterprise was trapped and facing impending doom. Barclay went to the one place where he was most familiar with which was the Holodeck and went to work and I still love the dialog between him and the computer. "Computer create the following components to my specifications." "The Holodeck is not programmed to create such things." "Don't worry, I'll walk you through it." That may not be exactly what was said in the episode but that was the general gist. And then whenever the ship came to, Barclay had created an entire interface where he pretty much became the Enterprise computer and it was awesome.
@@MarkLewis... yep, that’s the name of the episode. I can’t believe that I forgot the name but I loved that episode involving Barclays, that one or the episode where Barclay was dealing with his fear of the transporter and ended up saying the guy who secured himself in the pattern buffer but became trapped and Barclay helped pulled him out and saved his life.
I wish they explored the galactic central race much more than they actually did since they just skipped 10 days of knowledge sharing. 2 of my favorite scenes in this episode is definitely when Barclay was complaining that the ship’s interface was too slow and lectured the computer on how to fix everything, the second is the ending with the introduction of the race, the explanation of everything that transpired and Barclay becoming a Grandmaster of chess despite never even playing the game. I enjoy the entire episode though and there’s lots of good scenes where I’m just cheering on Barclay. I would have loved future episodes with Barclay just randomly playing chess with people in Ten Forward since it would have a great callback to how he dramatically improved both as a person and a character.

Especially since it's that relapse that was hinted at (to an extent) but was also Reg actually working at his best to get Starfleet in contact with Voyager. Despite his actions almost costing him his job, he succeeded, and Voyager was contacted. It truly was one of Barklay's best episodes
I thought of that one too. One of my fave Star Trek eps of any series. But I guess their argument may be the amount of time the ep featured the holodeck.
This would have been on my list as well. One detail I always loved was that all the Maquis members wore their original uniforms. Since that’s how they would have appeared in the Star Fleet records which Barclay would have used to create the program.
@@Nightykk You know, me too. I wasn't really impressed with the Next Generation characters until Broccoli. I think it may have been because I felt for him and took offense to Pestley referring to him as Broccoli. I like underdogs I guess.
Would we consider "His Way" (DS9) and "Living Witness" (VOY) to be holodeck episodes? Because i love both of them. Odo getting love lessons from Vic, and the crew all living life through the Doctor's holo-novel...pure entertainment
My own fave Holodeck episodes are: The Big Goodbye: it introduced Dixon Hill, has a good premise on existentialism and showed the lighter side of Jean-Luc Picard. Our Man Bashir: a great nod to James Bond 007 and espionage films in general. Plus, Kira as Col. Anastascia Kamananov... ❤️ Take Me Out to the Holosuite: A nice reprieve from the Dominion War, and a shot at seeing the DS9 crew cutting loose and fancy free.
I finished #2 and wondered what #1 would be. Then when it came up I realized I had completely blocked that episode from my memory. It’s so sad! Time to go rewatch it and have a cry.
@@HighSierra1500 that line, along with plenty others on the episode, was not scripted. The script actually said "Say something Klingony", and that was what Michael Dorm went with. It is a big part of why I loved the episode.
@@HighSierra1500 "Find him, and kill him", "They all look alike", and "did I forget to wear my spots today" were the same. They didn't have a script, they had an outline.
My number 1 would be "Author Author" for it's compelling social commentary. Second place would be "Worst Case Scenario" for the suspense it builds at the beginning, it's one of few Voyager episodes that takes advantage of the Maquis/Starfleet conflict. A Fistful of Datas is easily TNG's best.
My favorite holodeck episode is also one of the newest ones: 'Crisis Point' from Lower Decks (S01E09). I almost never hat so much fun with any TV episode period.
You're probably my favorite whatculture trek host now :-) I love your lists. I like your crisper narrative style. I like your "favorite" wish list from Enterprise.
I do love Dwight Schultz as Barclay. I really relate to him and the anxiety!! Oh my days though, Seán I’m so glad ‘Real Life’ was number 1- I cried like a baby when the EMHs daughter was slowly passing :,,(
In the TNG episode Neutral Zone, I think Data should have taken the three people from the 20th century to the holodeck after he explained that television didn't last past 2040.
@@robertsutton8894 I don't know about that. In another episode Data takes a Romulan, who came to warn the Federation about a cloaked base, to the Holodeck to view his favorite spot on Romulus and told him he could stay as long as he likes. So obviously, unlike Deep Space 9, the ship has enough Holodecks for the crew and guests on board.
Holodeck episodes are in general incredibly creative, since writers can expand the scenario to any setting and put the cast into any imaginable situation. No wonder this list is filled with wonderful episodes, and there's a lot more that aren't on the list but are indeed very nice and enjoyable episodes. P.S.: VOY "Real life" still makes me cry.
As always, thank you so very much for the video. And I'd like to add, for some reason, I especially liked this episode, the content, the writing and the narration. Would you call any of the orginal Star Trek Hologram episodes? I mean not technically of course, but there were several that I'd say came close: "The Cage" ("The Menagerie"), "Shore Leave", "Who Mourns for Adonais?", "Mirror, Mirror", "Catspaw", "A Piece of the Action", "A Private Little War", "Patterns of Force", "Bread and Circuses", "Assignment: Earth", "The Paradise Syndrome", "Spectre of the Gun", "Day of the Dove", "The Empath", and "The Savage Curtain". They all, I think, have a cretain, altered reality feel not dis-similar to the Holodeck adventures.
I had hoped TNG ship in a bottle. The 2nd appearance of Professor M. - tricked and trapped in a simulation box. Picard states: who knows if we a simply a simulation living in a box. Very meta.
It's Only A Paper Moon is my favorite Star Trek episode ever. And the only episode that made me cry. Aron Eisenberg played the war induced PTSD unbelievable realisticly.
Has anybody mentioned the "Star Trek: The Animated Series" episode "The Practical Joker"? No? Well, it's here now! It may not have been called a holodeck, but it was the first use of one in any "Star Trek" show.
I’m going to share mine before watching the video or reading the other comments: Hands-down, for me the best holodeck episodes are those that deal with sentience or possible sentience among holodeck characters: The big goodbye, Moriarty, Minuet. There are many others in this category. I also loved the ones that dealt with Barclay and holoaddiction. And any episode where you don’t realize they’re in a holodeck until the end - great plot twist!
Minuet!! yes!! I LOVED that episode!! Riker never got to spend a lot of time on the holodeck.

Nowadays Our Man Bashir feels like an Archer episode, especially with Garak's constant commentary. Crisis Point also needs to be up there because not only does it brilliantly lampoon a lot of Trek movie tropes, it also led to some much-needed character development.
You mention the episode 'only a paper moon' although I agree with most of the analysis it's probably worth mentioning that PTSD and phantom pains probably aren't the only condition the character was likely suffering from. They even mention within the episode that the character was confronted by his own mortality which could cause quite a few conditions including shellshock.
This list is a bit heavy on Deep Space Nine (I think you're biased is showing, Sean). There are several great episodes of Voyager that sadly did not make this list: The Killing Game; Tinker, Tenor, Doctor, Spy; Worst Case Scenario; Flesh and Blood; and Living Witness. Well, now my bias is showing 😉🖖.
Good list as always. Real Life was amazing emotional work. I would lobby for ST:Voyager's Pathfinder to be included, but understand why it probably wasn't. Looking forward to the next Trek list!!!
Fantastic List, but… Projections from Season 2 VOY is sorely MIA. It’s the ep. where the Doctor starts to question whether he’s real and the rest of the crew is a hologram. First VOY ep w/ Barclay, and it almost had me convinced the doctor was real and Voyager was the simulation (which it technically was).
"Elementary, My Dear Data" was one of THE BEST holodeck episodes. It was THE VERY EPISODE that made me start to notice the show. The confrontation between Picard and Moriarty at the end was short but HIGHLY dramatic and tense. I loved it. I would say that it's DEFINITELY in the top three episodes.....maybe #2.
The Nextgen episode with Minuet In “11001001” was my favorite. Followed by the one with the train on the holodeck "Emergence" and all the Vic fontaines.
I can’t believe no one seems to mention the epic Lower Deck’s - Episode “Terminal Provocations” - Come on “BADGEY” ?!? It was brilliantly hilarious 🙌🏻🤣🖖🏻
It was the Shakespeare joke at the top that drew me in. Always loved Henry V and when that episode aired I loved every second of it. That said, love Vic.
I'm kind of surprised there's not more Voyager on this list as they spent the most time on the holodeck out of any show; "The Killing Game", "Worst Case Scenario", "Projections" should have been included if not honorably mentioned. Also surprised there was no Lower Decks on here, Badgey would be very disappointed.
Author, Author is a great episode which also starred The Doctor. While he exaggerates things. He also points out how simple things like his mobile emitter still show he's different.
I'm sure that "The Killing Game" (Voyager) will rate very high... nope, it didn't! ^^ Truth be told, there are much greater episodes around. Cool list, thanks Seán! And more greetings from Germany. :-)
@@bijter I really did cry at the end of "Real Life"... I mean they really played with goofy and serious stuff in a matter of minutes. Wow! And it added a lot to the Doctor's character.

I'll give you 'Real Life.' But Elementary Dear Data should be second. Oh, come now. "I do not wish to kill you", and "I do not wish to die." Patrick Stewart is pure gold.
This could easily have been a list with thirty entries, but I mostly agree eith your choices. Perhaps Fair Haven/ Spirit Folk from Voyager could have fitted in there just like the one where Barclay lives on a virtual Voyager part-time. Same for the one where the Holodoc saves Zimmermann. Anyway, just too many to count and squeeze into such a short list.
I am so glad that real life made your list because that was one that was very moving to me. I also agree with the person who said that worst case scenario should have been included. It was a lot better than Z Chaotica episodes
Just going to point a few easter eggs well one in particular the old west hollow deck program Worf, Alex, and Troi was involved in. The setting and even Worf's costume was an old throw back to two John Wayne films, Rio Bravo and El Dorado heck, even the plot was pretty much both squeezed into 60 minutes.
The Killing Game is another great one, Someone to Watch Over Me honorable mention since it takes place almost entirely on the holodeck and is super good. It's Only a Paper Moon, Take Me Out to the Holosuite, Badda Bing Badda Bang, and Bride of Chaotica would be top 4 for me, but can't fault the list order either, all great episodes.
I always found it funny when they would tromp through whatever situation was going on when they were looking for somebody. When all that needed to be done was "computer, end program" and that person would be standing in an empty room.
Baseball is a game of surprising logic as well physical skill something Vulcans would find a great appreciation for. They would probably like Golf as well.

@@Nightykk You know, me too. I wasn't really impressed with the Next Generation characters until Broccoli. I think it may have been because I felt for him and took offense to Pestley referring to him as Broccoli. I like underdogs I guess.
My top 3: Rebellion Alpha, Our Man Bashir, and Mr. Broccoli Holodeck Interface wizh the computer.
I Loved the Vic Fontaine episodes
Would we consider "His Way" (DS9) and "Living Witness" (VOY) to be holodeck episodes? Because i love both of them. Odo getting love lessons from Vic, and the crew all living life through the Doctor's holo-novel...pure entertainment
You forgot Star Trek Lower Decks “Crisis Point” episode. Where they made a movie, I thought it was one of the better episodes.
In "Take Me Out To The Holosuite" Lieutenant Commander Worf has the best lines!
DEATH TO THE OPPOSITION!
The Big Goodbye was where I fell in love with Dr Crusher! Also inspired my own love of hard-boiled detective stories!
honorable mention:
picard gunning down borg drones in first contact
Cool! I thought about that too!
“I think you got ‘em!”
I love the Fair Haven eps! I always look forward to them whenever I'm on a Voyager watch-through.
love having a good drink and watching them both!!!
My own fave Holodeck episodes are:
The Big Goodbye: it introduced Dixon Hill, has a good premise on existentialism and showed the lighter side of Jean-Luc Picard.
Our Man Bashir: a great nod to James Bond 007 and espionage films in general. Plus, Kira as Col. Anastascia Kamananov... ❤️
Take Me Out to the Holosuite: A nice reprieve from the Dominion War, and a shot at seeing the DS9 crew cutting loose and fancy free.
I finished #2 and wondered what #1 would be. Then when it came up I realized I had completely blocked that episode from my memory. It’s so sad! Time to go rewatch it and have a cry.
_It's Only A Paper Moon_ is an all-time Top 10 Star Trek episode. Completely destroyed me. Eisenberg & Darren were on another level.
"Take Me Out to the Holosuite" is my absolute favorite episode of all Trek.
"Death to the opposition!"
@@HighSierra1500 that line, along with plenty others on the episode, was not scripted.
The script actually said "Say something Klingony", and that was what Michael Dorm went with.
It is a big part of why I loved the episode.
@@BigJeremyBeyer I did not know that! Ad-libbing indeed worked!
@@HighSierra1500 "Find him, and kill him", "They all look alike", and "did I forget to wear my spots today" were the same.
They didn't have a script, they had an outline.
Voyager may have had ups and downs, but damn those ups were good
My number 1 would be "Author Author" for it's compelling social commentary.
Well done Seán.. it was perfect! I was brought to tears.. literally.. so yes, thank you!!
Especially after the musician asked what they do for fun. Good point
Not much time left for the crew then.
Our Man Bashir is my favourite Bond movie.
I loved the Fair Haven and Spirit Folk episodes from Voyager. So many good episodes to choose from.
The animated series episode "Practical Joker" should have gotten a mention. It was technically the first holodeck episode.
Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang was one of my favorite DS9 episodes.
... a slight cover of Ocean's Eleven, but even better!
@@EmEStudiosHannover alternate title: Oceans (DS)9!
@@JLvatron Yeah! That's cool! B-)
@@JLvatron I was thinking Fontaine's Nine.
@@martyklestadt6766 That would have been amazing!
They all, I think, have a cretain, altered reality feel not dis-similar to the Holodeck adventures.
just hearing the name of the episode "it's only a paper moon" gives me a serious case of the feels, it is just that well done.
Paper moon should have been first, that episode has bought tears to my eyes more than once.
OMG- now I want the Archer cast to do voiceovers for that episode.
Bride of Chaotica is the best one ever
You mention the episode 'only a paper moon' although I agree with most of the analysis it's probably worth mentioning that PTSD and phantom pains probably aren't the only condition the character was likely suffering from. They even mention within the episode that the character was confronted by his own mortality which could cause quite a few conditions including shellshock.
But I thought Shell shock was the old name for what we now call PTSD? (post traumatic stress disorder)
The longest running Holodeck program was Star Trek Enterprise.
Projections is a criminally underrated episode.
It's Only a Paper Moon deserved to be first for the number of actual combat vets who praised it for taking on an issue so painful for them.
Idea for a future TrekCulture video: "Top 10 Star Trek Episodes Not About Star Trek" (eg, Take me out to the holosuite. Far Beyond the Stars, etc)
Sounds like you need a pt2 video!
Awww I wanted to keep on watching! Give us more please!
Great list. :) It could've been comprised of DS9 episodes entirely.
It's only a paper moon should've been in first place though.
One one hand the holodeck is the perfect plot contrivance. On the other hand all these episodes are amazing.
7:15 - did you say "science friction"? Awesome!
The episode form lower decks which was a star treks movies parody
Ship in a Bottle was the best holodeck episode and it's shown here for about a tenth of a second.
Yes its the best! And yes, I think the rekockning of Dr. Moriaty concerning the possibillity to leave the holodeck is from "Ship in a bottle"...
Nice one Seán! Really good episode!
Any video that shows Jake in THOSE trousers gets instant thumbs up from me.
Maybe instead of "top 10" you should do "Every holodeck episode, ranked"
Ship in a Bottle - my favorite TNG episode. The Killing Game - my favorite Voyager episode. Both are worthy of being on the list.
You forgot about the episode Booby Trap, where the Enterprise is trapped in the dampening field.
I'm sure that "The Killing Game" (Voyager) will rate very high... nope, it didn't! ^^ Truth be told, there are much greater episodes around.
Cool list, thanks Seán! And more greetings from Germany.
:-)
I thought that episode would be rated high as well, :'D
But I actually forgot about "Real Life", that was indeed a very good one too...
@@bijter I really did cry at the end of "Real Life"... I mean they really played with goofy and serious stuff in a matter of minutes. Wow! And it added a lot to the Doctor's character.
@@PatrickReichelReptileCynrik
I really agree, I cried too... A few times... ~I maybe have watched too much Star Trek in my young life~
The Doctor did got some really interesting episodes in general.
This is going to be awesome
Good list, I do wish the Hirogen hunters of the Voyager crew living in World War 2 had made it on this list. Honestly I’m shocked it isn’t on here. It’s one of my all time favorite episodes.
I downloaded the Brooks/Darren duet and i have it on my phone. It's so much better than the origional from Frank Senatra.
I really liked the Vick Fontaine program
The Killing Game is another great one, Someone to Watch Over Me honorable mention since it takes place almost entirely on the holodeck and is super good. It's Only a Paper Moon, Take Me Out to the Holosuite, Badda Bing Badda Bang, and Bride of Chaotica would be top 4 for me, but can't fault the list order either, all great episodes.
I love both Fair Haven episodes. The Adventures of Flotter. I also liked Janeway's holodeck programs like Janeway Lambda One and Leonardo Da Vinci.
