Any word on the audio issue? All my 4Ks play fine, except for this one. Quite a few people are having trouble with the bitrate on older systems in the audio chain. I'm running audio out from my 4k player to an older denon receiver. Its just completely silent. Studio intro is fine, as are alternate language tracks. Just the main 7.1dolby is silent. Any advice?
I would personally like to see 4K versions of Ben Hur, Cleopatra, Sound of Music and South Pacific which were also shot in 65MM large formats (Ben Hur in Ultra Panavision and the other three in Todd-A-O). The King and I from a Cinemascope 55 negative if in good shape would look incredible because the format had a larger frame area than anything other than IMAX.
The King and I needs it most of all. That Blu was terrible. South Pacific, I don’t know whether it would help or not, since the tinted and toned scenes are how it was supposed to look, even though it makes it look faded and discolored in my opinion. Honestly, when I saw how it looked on a Blu-ray, I complained about how it looked like the VHS tape, only to discover it was supposed to look like that.
They don't make them like that anymore! One they haven't got the STARS, People behind the Camera etc This was Hollywood Film Making and The Dream Factory at its BEST! Thank God we have it captured on film these are Block Busters not this run of the mill rubbish they churn out now!
And an awards celebration is just what our people need now, some honest-to-goodness, old-fashioned heroes! (same actor, Wilfred-Hyde-White, Battlestar Galactica)
Been on a Audrey Hepburn kick lately going through her filmography for my first time, been waiting for this 4K release for this movie. I can't wait, glad to hear the transfer is great!
@@wolfhawk1999 I wonder if a B/W movie on an actual 4K Ultra HD disc would be a substantial improvement over regular BD? Arguably it's her best movie, although most fans would probably say B.A.T....
@@GA-1st The few b&w films released on 4K so far have benefited from greater fine detail, and contrast due to HDR. I noticed it with Mr. Smith goes to Washington and Dr. Strangelove. Heard good things about Schindler's List too.

My only gripe with this release along with the upcoming 4K releases of Super 8 and the Indiana Jones collection from Paramount is that they won’t include standard Blu-ray discs for the films. I’m really not a fan of when it’s just 4K Blu-ray only with a digital code in it. I usually think they do 4K+Blu-ray combos so that you have the standard Blu-ray in case you want to take it to a friends house that don’t have a 4K player much similar to Blu-ray+DVD combos. Paramount did it before with Coming to America and Days of Thunder on 4K, Sony’s doing it with the upcoming 4K of In the Line of Fire and Warner Bros. has done it with the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies on 4K. It feels as if studios think a lot of people have upgraded to 4K Blu-ray when people in general (aside from a lot of film junkies like me) still have standard Blu-rays and are mostly streaming movies more than buying physical. In cases like this I should have both the standard Blu-ray and the 4K Blu-ray with titles like this just so that I can have one for 4K viewing and the other one if I wanted to bring it over to a friend’s house if they don’t have 4K. I hope this means we get more Audrey Hepburn films like Breakfast at Tiffany’s on 4K although it could manage to get a Paramount Presents release sometime down the line.
As someone who already has the blu-ray, I’m glad this is cheaper, and I imagine that’s because the omitted the Blu-ray. If I didn’t have the Blu-ray or didn’t own it at all and don’t have 4K, then I wouldn’t like it. So it’s a double edged sword.
@@yelanates I was planning on buying the standard Blu-ray for a while before the 4K was even announced. If this version included the Blu-ray, I would’ve bought it without even buying the standard version to begin with. Normally, I tend to buy a Blu-ray and then a month or two later the studio’s like “Hey we’re rereleasing it on 4K!” and I’m like “Dammit! I bought it like two months ago!”
@@carter_lovejoy Catalog 4K releases with an included Blu-ray copy are nice, but I don't think we should complain if it's omitted. My Fair Lady [and all the titles you mentioned above], have been readily available for YEARS, on Blu-ray. It's not unreasonable for distributors to assume that most 4K buyers probably already have these highly popular titles, on Blu-ray. There is only one disc replication facility left (in North America). It puts a serious strain on their operational capacity, to continually press redundant Blu-ray copies, for every catalog 4K release.
They’re kinda damned if they do and damned if they don’t. It’s a redundant disc when they do include it, and it’s an easy way to scare people away when they don’t include it. Considering that MFL is out of print on Blu, you’re either getting the 4K or you’re paying big bucks on eBay for one of the old Blu-rays. Blu-ray.com had several packaging variants listed, of which 4K+Blu+Digital was one of them, so maybe it’s available somewhere.
The most elegant woman on the most elegant looking media? Sounds like an immediate purchase to me. These old classics have a real nice color palette and the craft behind the films is evident.
Thanks for the review! This is one of those films that I watched as a kid then forgot existed. Watched it for the first time in probably 15 years not too long ago, and appreciated it much more than I was expecting. Great 4k restoration of a great film for $20? Day 1 buy for me.
Thankyou, great review! I'm a self confessed "My Fair Lady " nut and regard it as not only one of the greatest musicals of all time but one of the greatest films from Hollywood's Golden age. The 2011 release was a real dud and a shocker, but the 2015 restored bluray was lovely. I'm definitely purchasing the newly restored 4k version! Cheers from Australia.
Hang onto your 2011 copy it has a fantastic commentary track - BIG mistake from Paramount WHY has it been pulled from this 4K release so keep hold of your 2011 copy!
Breathtaking in 4K! I don't have enough words to praise how phenomenal this 4K release is. I was truly astonished at the amount of detail and the glorious deep blacks. I saw MFL in 1965 in its first run roadshow engagement at the Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles. It was in 70mm and with state of the art projection and sound. After watching this 4K release, I realized I was experiencing something I had not experienced in any previous video releases but that I did experience in seeing it in 70mm in 1965. It was the cumulative effect of sitting through almost 3 hours of incredible beauty. The images and feel of the experience resonated for days after seeing it. It washed over me and stayed with me. How amazing. After almost 60 years, I once again experienced entering into the the amazing, heavenly world created by the artists of Warner Brothers.

As I write this, the Blu-ray; the 50th Anniversary Edition, goes for $17:49 and the 4k is on pre-order for $19:99; there's not even a Starbucks coffee in it; a no-brainer, if you don't own it already! Nice review!!
I've been (narrowly) avoiding watching the Vudu version so that I'd be surprised when seeing the disc😅 Glad to hear it looks good though. Vudu has nice streams.
Great video. I would say for people who have the 2011 Blu Ray for them not to throw it out as it has an audio commentary missing from this release as well as the 50th anniversary one.
If I do double dip (well, I have the 50th Neo Case and two tapes so, quadruple dip?), it will be for that older Blu or a copy with features that never made it to Blu. I’ll get the 4K eventually. I just can’t justify buying a 4K of this when I just bought the Blu last year and I haven’t even watched it yet.
I hope so. That last Blu looks like a VHS tape. It needs a complete overhaul. Per Robert Harris, who did that Blu, the film they had was overused, and it was a miracle that they made it look as good as it did.
Looking forward to receiving this! The day that pre-order was available on Amazon I rushed and got it. Hopefully we can keep getting more classic films restored for 4k! I do love the options of streaming but still nothing compares to physical movies.

This is great to hear. This movie hasn't had a great history on digital formats. The DVD was lousy. As was that first BR. Good to see things are back on track with this movie. The second BR was more the ticket. But this is one of those movies that screams for 4K. Glad to her it has gotten stellar treatment in the format.

96 kHz audio is interesting to see. The higher sample rate creates a more accurate capture of the sound wave than 48 kHz audio. Whether you can actually hear the difference is another story.
You can. Having heard it at lower quality on the 50th Blu, you will be shocked when you play it at how amazing it sounds. Considering how great the sound was on The Ten Commandments (also from Paramount), this 4K will sound like The Matrix of musicals.
@@shanerollins3736 I'll have to check this movie out. I digitized my vinyl collection and tested 16/48 vs. 24/96 rips when I was starting. I thought the 24/96 captures sounded slightly better so I stuck with it. I doubt I would hear any difference on low-end equipment though (TV speakers). The 96 kHz made a HUGE difference while manually repairing the loud pops so I can definitely see the benefit for doing restoration work. The pops stick out on the waveforms like sore thumbs at 96 kHz.
Great Review as always - Shot in Super Panavision 70mm by Master Cameraman Harry Stradling Sr. he also shot Hello Dolly! in Todd-AO 70mm and Funny Girl - My Fair Lady one of the greatest movie musicals of all time 8 Oscar Winner. I have the 2015 Blu Ray the picture is Dazzling wow on par with BEN HUR Fantastic quality main reason of course it was shot on 65mm Film Stock real FILM this leaves Digital in the Dark I think! Being a fan of the film I have also the 2011 copy which you mentioned and it was nowhere near as good as the 2015 reissue 4k Master but I have to say and this is a BIG BUT for the fan and collector of this film this version did have an amazing Audio Commentary Track Featuring - Gene Allen, Marni Nixon, Robert A. Harris, and James C. Katz offer a track that's heavy on the filmmaking and restoration process, both video and audio. It can get a little technical, but it's honest in terms of the difficulty of the process and the need to remain true to the film's original vision and structure. It also delves heavily into the history of the production which makes for a more traditional-like string of comments. Marni Nixon chimes in from time to time recorded separately and discussing her work on the film as Hepburn's singer. Such a shame this has been pulled WHY? from this 4k Reissue a missed opportunity by Paramount and it really is a fan's delight to listen to Robert A. Harris, and James C. Katz who did the restoration on this go into great detail on how it was done they also restored David Leans Lawrence Of Arabia back to its Full Uncut 70mm Glory in 1988 - also on the track the late great ghost singer Marni Nixon who dubbed the singing for Audrey Hepburn talks in detail about this, a missed opportunity for this Classic film this really would have made it a Special Edition but there you go these guys think they have got it right! WRONG! So make sure you hang onto the 2011 copy of this film if you want this amazing commentary track it really is one of the best I've heard - Good to see they did put all extras on a separate Blu Ray - Hope you did not mind me bringing this to your attention I know commentary tracks mean a lot to fans and collectors they really do like to have them included if available. HDR probably didn't make much difference because, except for the beginning when Audrey Hepburn was outside in the street at night begging for cash, this film was so consistently well-lit to begin with. It took a lot of 10,000-watt brute arcs to light for 65mm film.
That’s weird. The Wizard Of Oz had lights to beat any other movie, and the 4K and the Blu do look different. Not VHS-to-4K different, but you can tell the difference.
@@shanerollins3736 But you know what I'm saying: Flatter light, where every shadow is filled in, was the norm prior to the late '60s, except in noirish detective stories and monster movies. A lot of light was actually a technical requirement, since film stocks and lenses were miserably slow. In such a situation, HDR affects color depth more than contrast range.
Thanks for the review! Looks really good, and I can think of people like my sister really loving it. Just reinforcing your comments re 96kHz sound in case it helps - but I'm open to correction if wrong! My understanding and limited experience is: 1. Normally sound on DVD, mp3, CD is recorded (digitally sampled) in the studios at 48kHz which means the equipment that plays it back, (e.g. a CD) has to be capable of reproducing a 48kHz soundtrack. This has been the norm for many years on nearly every piece of equipment today. 2. The doubling of the sampling rate to 96kHz means that the recording was 'sampled' in much more detail, and 'caught' more of the nuances of the sound. This results in a clearer playback of the soundtrack, often with SUBTLE clarity improvements - even if played back on everyday 48kHz equipment - i.e. most people's equipment. 3. Finally, if the soundtrack can actually be played back on (some audiophile or studio) equipment capable of 96kHz, then you get to hear those subtleties more clearly. To most ears it also sounds slightly louder with clearer 'high' notes from things like violins, cymbals whilst at the same time keeping the unwanted noise levels from things like hum, buzz, rumble at low levels. Some try to describe the difference as a more natural 'air-ry' sound.
I just bought My Fair Lady on UHD 4K. This guy isn't exaggerating at all. The film looks brilliant! It's a gorgeous representation of this great classic.

The Dolby TrueHD 7.1 track on this disc can be upmixed on an A/V receiver to make use of overhead channels. This is really personal preference. You can either just pass the audio as is or you can upmix it using a Dolby Surround upmixer for a better or fake Atmos effect as I like to call it.
You have to watch the German UHD of Texas chainsaw massacre! Here in Germany there is a great independent label that has released it. Is the same label that saved the uncut scenes from Psycho

It looks like we're getting a Blu-ray copy of the film in the UK release, as well as the bonus disc. Not sure if the Blu-ray disc of the film is just the film or includes other extras
Still its always a pity that they went for 100% indoor filming with this and other musicals no location work what soever in MFL. Seven brides for seven brothers (could have filmed some scenes in Yosemite park or forest and second half of Oklahoma could also been on location and some others .Little cheap guys those studios heads I guess we were lucky with Hello Dolly and Sound of music and South Pacific going outdoors
As a massive movie musical enthusiast, am I the _only_ one who thinks My Fair Lady is the superior work to West Side Story?? 🤷♂️ I mean, I love them both and they are both classics for a reason, but if I _had_ to choose, I will always go with My Fair Lady. Now, maybe some of that has to do with my obsession with Audrey Hepburn (my favorite actress of all time!), but... 😉
Although the original negative was scanned at 8K, this restoration was entirely done at 4K, back in 2015 (with HDR grading newly applied). Remember, scanning an older film's original elements [at any resolution] is only the first step. Without restoration work, that raw 8K scan would look extremely rough.
It's odd that movies like this get a 4K, but not something like "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (arguably Hepburn's biggest movie). Even Charade got a 4K scan for Criterion. But we are stuck with a shitty Blu ray release for Breakfast. It's just weird
01:30 Sssssoooooo, what's the "high source" the 65mm film or the 8K source they have now??? Is this disc made from the 8K or the 4K done in 2015? If it is the one from 2015, is this just a higher bitrate version compared to the 50th Anniversary disc that's 4K but labeled as Blu-ray instead of 4K? It seems like he's contradicting himself, or either I'm just not understanding. I'm wanting to buy this, hence the reason I'm asking
According to the Digital Bits, the 2015 8k scan that was used for the Blu was used for this UHD. However the color grade for this release is new. The 4K downsample from 2015 would I guess have been used again here, but since they tossed the old colour grade used for the 2K downsample in 2015, it sounds like this edition looks great (from multiple sources I’ve read)
If you take an average-sized home theater Blueray collection of let's say 1,000 discs, then it will cost around $20,000 to upgrade the library to UHD disks ...What if that money were spent doubling the quality of your sound system and projector and just upscale your 2K stuff to 4K through a much more superior Projector. Home Cinema like Automobiles has a higher running cost than the HC or car itself...
🤔🙄... It's 96Kb/ Second... 😒. It is really hard to take a stereo audio and create an Atmos soundtrack. It would basically take re-recording the entire audio track. There are some studio digital magic tricks that can be done on modern films, but on older films, when you only have stereo tracks, that's it... You can't magically turn it into a 7.2.4 soundtrack.
'Jaws' now has an Atmos mix, and that film was originally mono. 'Ghandi' and 'Lawrence of Arabia' also now have Atmos mixes. If any film's original audio stems are available, new mixes are always possible. As for 'My Fair Lady', the film WAS originally released in 1064 with 6-track audio (for the 70MM prints).

You can buy Indiana jones Collection 4k plus blu-ray from Zavvi for $170 vs just the 4k and digital from bestbuy for $99.

After watching this 4K release, I realized I was experiencing something I had not experienced in any previous video releases but that I did experience in seeing it in 70mm in 1965. It was the cumulative effect of sitting through almost 3 hours of incredible beauty. The images and feel of the experience resonated for days after seeing it. It washed over me and stayed with me. How amazing. After almost 60 years, I once again experienced entering into the the amazing, heavenly world created by the artists of Warner Brothers.

I saw it on 4k on vudu recently, and it looked amazing, so I can only imagine how great the disc looks.
The 4K version of West Side Story on Vudu is also worth a view.
I've been (narrowly) avoiding watching the Vudu version so that I'd be surprised when seeing the disc😅 Glad to hear it looks good though. Vudu has nice streams.

Great video. I would say for people who have the 2011 Blu Ray for them not to throw it out as it has an audio commentary missing from this release as well as the 50th anniversary one.
If I do double dip (well, I have the 50th Neo Case and two tapes so, quadruple dip?), it will be for that older Blu or a copy with features that never made it to Blu. I’ll get the 4K eventually. I just can’t justify buying a 4K of this when I just bought the Blu last year and I haven’t even watched it yet.
A BIG mistake from Paramount that commentary track is amazing so interesting WHY was it pulled from this 4K release keep hold of your 2011 copy!

I hope so. That last Blu looks like a VHS tape. It needs a complete overhaul. Per Robert Harris, who did that Blu, the film they had was overused, and it was a miracle that they made it look as good as it did.
Looking forward to receiving this! The day that pre-order was available on Amazon I rushed and got it. Hopefully we can keep getting more classic films restored for 4k! I do love the options of streaming but still nothing compares to physical movies.

This is great to hear. This movie hasn't had a great history on digital formats. The DVD was lousy. As was that first BR. Good to see things are back on track with this movie. The second BR was more the ticket. But this is one of those movies that screams for 4K. Glad to her it has gotten stellar treatment in the format.

96 kHz audio is interesting to see. The higher sample rate creates a more accurate capture of the sound wave than 48 kHz audio. Whether you can actually hear the difference is another story.
You can. Having heard it at lower quality on the 50th Blu, you will be shocked when you play it at how amazing it sounds. Considering how great the sound was on The Ten Commandments (also from Paramount), this 4K will sound like The Matrix of musicals.
@@shanerollins3736 I'll have to check this movie out. I digitized my vinyl collection and tested 16/48 vs. 24/96 rips when I was starting. I thought the 24/96 captures sounded slightly better so I stuck with it. I doubt I would hear any difference on low-end equipment though (TV speakers). The 96 kHz made a HUGE difference while manually repairing the loud pops so I can definitely see the benefit for doing restoration work. The pops stick out on the waveforms like sore thumbs at 96 kHz.
Great Review as always - Shot in Super Panavision 70mm by Master Cameraman Harry Stradling Sr. he also shot Hello Dolly! in Todd-AO 70mm and Funny Girl - My Fair Lady one of the greatest movie musicals of all time 8 Oscar Winner. I have the 2015 Blu Ray the picture is Dazzling wow on par with BEN HUR Fantastic quality main reason of course it was shot on 65mm Film Stock real FILM this leaves Digital in the Dark I think! Being a fan of the film I have also the 2011 copy which you mentioned and it was nowhere near as good as the 2015 reissue 4k Master but I have to say and this is a BIG BUT for the fan and collector of this film this version did have an amazing Audio Commentary Track Featuring - Gene Allen, Marni Nixon, Robert A. Harris, and James C. Katz offer a track that's heavy on the filmmaking and restoration process, both video and audio. It can get a little technical, but it's honest in terms of the difficulty of the process and the need to remain true to the film's original vision and structure. It also delves heavily into the history of the production which makes for a more traditional-like string of comments. Marni Nixon chimes in from time to time recorded separately and discussing her work on the film as Hepburn's singer. Such a shame this has been pulled WHY? from this 4k Reissue a missed opportunity by Paramount and it really is a fan's delight to listen to Robert A. Harris, and James C. Katz who did the restoration on this go into great detail on how it was done they also restored David Leans Lawrence Of Arabia back to its Full Uncut 70mm Glory in 1988 - also on the track the late great ghost singer Marni Nixon who dubbed the singing for Audrey Hepburn talks in detail about this, a missed opportunity for this Classic film this really would have made it a Special Edition but there you go these guys think they have got it right! WRONG! So make sure you hang onto the 2011 copy of this film if you want this amazing commentary track it really is one of the best I've heard - Good to see they did put all extras on a separate Blu Ray - Hope you did not mind me bringing this to your attention I know commentary tracks mean a lot to fans and collectors they really do like to have them included if available. HDR probably didn't make much difference because, except for the beginning when Audrey Hepburn was outside in the street at night begging for cash, this film was so consistently well-lit to begin with. It took a lot of 10,000-watt brute arcs to light for 65mm film.
That’s weird. The Wizard Of Oz had lights to beat any other movie, and the 4K and the Blu do look different. Not VHS-to-4K different, but you can tell the difference.
@@shanerollins3736 But you know what I'm saying: Flatter light, where every shadow is filled in, was the norm prior to the late '60s, except in noirish detective stories and monster movies. A lot of light was actually a technical requirement, since film stocks and lenses were miserably slow. In such a situation, HDR affects color depth more than contrast range.

Just reinforcing your comments re 96kHz sound in case it helps - but I'm open to correction if wrong!
My understanding and limited experience is:
1. Normally sound on DVD, mp3, CD is recorded (digitally sampled) in the studios at 48kHz which means the equipment that plays it back, (e.g. a CD) has to be capable of reproducing a 48kHz soundtrack. This has been the norm for many years on nearly every piece of equipment today.
2. The doubling of the sampling rate to 96kHz means that the recording was 'sampled' in much more detail, and 'caught' more of the nuances of the sound.
This results in a clearer playback of the soundtrack, often with SUBTLE clarity improvements - even if played back on everyday 48kHz equipment - i.e. most people's equipment.
3. Finally, if the soundtrack can actually be played back on (some audiophile or studio) equipment capable of 96kHz, then you get to hear those subtleties more clearly. To most ears it also sounds slightly louder with clearer 'high' notes from things like violins, cymbals whilst at the same time keeping the unwanted noise levels from things like hum, buzz, rumble at low levels. Some try to describe the difference as a more natural 'air-ry' sound.

The Dolby TrueHD 7.1 track on this disc can be upmixed on an A/V receiver to make use of overhead channels. This is really personal preference. You can either just pass the audio as is or you can upmix it using a Dolby Surround upmixer for a better or fake Atmos effect as I like to call it.
You have to watch the German UHD of Texas chainsaw massacre! Here in Germany there is a great independent label that has released it. Is the same label that saved the uncut scenes from Psycho

The blu-ray version of My Fair Lady looks better than 95% of 4K releases so it's no surprise that the 4K version is incredible.
the photography is 65mm but the print itself is the full 70mm
Now I’m interested in what that 8k looks like...
Although the original negative was scanned at 8K, this restoration was entirely done at 4K, back in 2015 (with HDR grading newly applied).
Remember, scanning an older film's original elements [at any resolution] is only the first step. Without restoration work, that raw 8K scan would look extremely rough.

01:30 Sssssoooooo, what's the "high source" the 65mm film or the 8K source they have now??? Is this disc made from the 8K or the 4K done in 2015? If it is the one from 2015, is this just a higher bitrate version compared to the 50th Anniversary disc that's 4K but labeled as Blu-ray instead of 4K? It seems like he's contradicting himself, or either I'm just not understanding. I'm wanting to buy this, hence the reason I'm asking
According to the Digital Bits, the 2015 8k scan that was used for the Blu was used for this UHD. However the color grade for this release is new. The 4K downsample from 2015 would I guess have been used again here, but since they tossed the old colour grade used for the 2K downsample in 2015, it sounds like this edition looks great (from multiple sources I’ve read)
In Australia, Disney commonly has the single 4K disc without Blu-rays or anything, yet they cost more than ANY other 4Ks.

If you take an average-sized home theater Blueray collection of let's say 1,000 discs, then it will cost around $20,000 to upgrade the library to UHD disks ...What if that money were spent doubling the quality of your sound system and projector and just upscale your 2K stuff to 4K through a much more superior Projector. Home Cinema like Automobiles has a higher running cost than the HC or car itself...
🤔🙄... It's 96Kb/ Second... 😒. It is really hard to take a stereo audio and create an Atmos soundtrack. It would basically take re-recording the entire audio track.
There are some studio digital magic tricks that can be done on modern films, but on older films, when you only have stereo tracks, that's it... You can't magically turn it into a 7.2.4 soundtrack.
'Jaws' now has an Atmos mix, and that film was originally mono. 'Ghandi' and 'Lawrence of Arabia' also now have Atmos mixes. If any film's original audio stems are available, new mixes are always possible.
As for 'My Fair Lady', the film WAS originally released in 1064 with 6-track audio (for the 70MM prints).
