I used to use my crane to take down and reset palms trees in California a few years ago and am proud of what this gentleman is letting people know about this sometimes risky business. Palm work can and is a truly rewarding career, however being safe while doing so should always be the utmost concern for everyone both up in the trees and those who are on the ground. I totally enjoyed the work I did and just like the gentleman said that there can also be things such as bees or other varmints that can nest or hide up in the canopy. Be safe out there my friends and enjoy your work 😊.

Playing Johnny bad ass showing off. Very dangerous work that requires always being aware of what's going on. I've almost been hit a few time by falling branches. Day dreaming when I was younger.
The tree squeeze is awesome I got one after gaffing out and hurting myself pretty good. Palms are nasty even putting a line up and over is pretty risky as far as I'm concerned. I plan on buying a spider lift next year to make it safer.

This happened in CA a few days ago. I took them a long time to get to the guy, and it turned into a recovery instead of a rescue. The footage was very sad to see.

Yesterday I saw a video of a person who in Bakersfield, CA passed while working on a palm tree. I saw the video where firefighters were removing the person on palm tree. Very unfortunate
I haven’t tried this method before I usually set my life line up before I go in so I can descend in an emergency. I like this will try it. Thank you as always for good content.
Never in 60 years knew that they went up there and trimmed that I thought when the weather changes they just fall off like leaves in the Midwest where I live wow, I could never handle that job
I knew a guy named Mario from Sinaloa Mexico. Guy was brave 200 + feet redwoods no loft no nothing just a harness. We would do so many side jobs. I was a ground man . I should of appreciated him more. We also worked for a company and he was better than the owner and faster .
In the 90s a arborist fell off a palm tree, he fell backwards off a ladder but a branch on a tree behind him impaled him right up ass. It wen in upto his lungs.
Did you see that on the ER show? They had a patient with the same exact injury. He came in still skewered. They opened up his abdominal cavity and were planning a course of action. Despite their concern about infection from sawdust, the had someone come in with an angle grinder and cut the branch into smaller pieces. I was screaming at the tv "PRUNERS!!". They never said if he made a full recovery or not.
I think a few years back a guy built an automated tool that climbs the palm and makes cuts with a small circular blade with a video camera mounted on it.remote control tool.
I'm a Humboldt County climber. Home of the Humboldt Cut. I climb using SRT and sometimes DRT. I also sometimes use my spikes and lanyard. I'm very familiar with the "big shot". That's the best way to secure a branch on a redwood tree. I've never worked on palm trees. This is really good information. Cheers!
30 years in the trade, both private, and Utility. I told my crews day after day during safety meetings, watch out for the unexpected, that is what will get you. No job is so important, no service is so necessary that we can not afford to do our job safely. Many times I called the job off to protect myself and my crews against supervisors, and company demands. At the age of 55 I retired from the work and the electrical union. I considered my physical Heath, hearing loss, lack of equilibrium, inability to comunícate with workers due to hearing loss, a major safety issue. I gave up a lot of my pension and retirement income for the safety of the workers and the union. Still going after 70 years. It was a difficult choice but My co-workers, the public, the company I worked for, the Union; safety came first. This is the most hazardous work in the world, and the most unforgiving. Expect the unexpected, from everything, and everyone, acts of God included. Stay safe! Loved my work. ❤
I worked for Asplundh shortly after high-school. Short of a soilder in battle i cant think of any job being as dangerous as that one. Everytime in a tree with live wires running through it was like a religious experience. The whole reason a spot was open for me to hire in was they had a guy killed by a line. As you say expect the unexpected. Well when the unexpected was girls laying out by a pool this poor bastard let it distract him and he leaned back enough that the back of his neck touched one of the 3 phases lines. As my coworker who retrieved his body said "killed him deader than shit".
In my youth i trimmed trees around power lines for the electric company. We had a special knot thatvwas heavy and threw it over branch. We wore saddles with a D ring at your waist. Tied speciall knot on D ring leaving 5 foot long . tied tail onto the rope coming down from branch with another special knot. A simple knot that allowed you to push it up rhe rope but if you 5 sat back the knot would clamp on the rope from your weight and not slide down on the rope. Ypu pushed the knot up the rope a couple feet atva time and lifted yourself up the treee. When you got to end of rope lengthband needed go higher you took the rope that lifted you and tiedvanother knot on D ring and tail of rope .you could then untie the initial knots and go higher. Some pinevtrees you might havre to do the otocess
Yes I saw the Bakersfield accident. Here on UA-cam I’m in Canada and of course no palms. Did not know this could happen. Cannot imagine the family of this man seeing his accident.
I didn't know about the whole ring, fluffing off on top of you. Don't think I'll be doing anymore palm tree's, because they are a hassle. One thing I'd like to add, is also the wet sawdust. That the palm leaves are made of. Are very irritating to the eyes. Learned that one, the hard way.
"easily" 😮 need strength to fulfill that mission. Great video...i'm not a trimmer, but recognize the importance of this training...OSHA definitely would approve!!
A pillow? That is a big too Wiley Coyote isn't it? I think cutting it from the top down hen palm trees have more than 3 years of growth is the rule in general and what they recommend. Using a lift is best.
No palm trees in Oklahoma. I cut trees all my life. But I was literally 1 step from Death on a sunny calm afternoon walking to a neighbors and for no reason half the tree fell a section 2 ft diameter half the tree. It was NOT being cut. No winds just crack & fall missing my head & body by literally 1 Foot. I did tree work for 20 years and the one that wasn't being cut or worked on almost took my life back in 2013. Later we saw tree was rotted in the middle huge elm. Freak accident. I was not harmed luckily
Cutting down trees is no joke; it's a risky business, especially when you're dealing with single-trunk giants like coconut and palm trees. Just the other day, I was up against some towering coconut trees, and let me tell you, they were incredibly brittle. As I sawed through, the moment the tree came crashing down, the trunk bounced back with such force that I had to grip it tightly to keep my balance. It was like being on a wild roller coaster ride, my heart racing and adrenaline pumping. You never really know what to expect in this line of work, and that thrill keeps you on your toes!
It's not an intuitive danger which makes it very dangerous. When I first hear of this and saw the video I couldn't even imagine what the dynamics were. Wasn't until the fronds were pushed off the guy that I could see how he was trapped and what the risk was. Weird thing but high risk. I think the danger is increased because homeowners who let fronds pile up for years are the same owners who will look for the cheapest solution and hire an untrained person.
Ive trimmed many trees like hardwood, pine , poplar but ive never trimmed a palm tree 🌴 and now ive learned something i didn't know that these palm trees would do that , very educational video, I'll never be trimming a palm tree thats for sure , ill leave that to the professionals....
Thanks for sharing Bino. This is usually how I do palm trees in my area. However, I find that the fronds' teeth are a bit rough on my ropes when I'm getting them through. Any tips on this?
Once you get your throw line over pull it slowly so your doesn't drop to the base of the terminal stem also some guys use a metal pointed cap that has a hole on the end of the rope to help go throw the canopy.
The top 4 most dangerous jobs on Earth are oil derrick worker, aircraft carrier worker, Alaskan fisherman, and lumberjack/tree trimmer ❤❤❤. May God continue to watch over all of you.
Here is an example of how to set the top with a base anchor. You don't have to retie at the top you could work with a base anchor. ua-cam.com/video/H1W-ZUe6uhQ/v-deo.htmlsi=glHtSxGJON0r9R_B
When they get the rope over the crown of the tree, I'm curious how they know that it's secure? I'm guessing that one advantage to the Drone is that you could have video as you pass over the top of the tree.
In experience kills and maims, I know I fell feet from a palm in 1994. and bounced off the sidewalk. Got pretty mangled but lived. shattered elbow, collapsed lung, broken pelvis, bruises all over.
0:09 What about putting a chain up there and tighten it around the trunk of the palm, put 3 sharp blades so when the weight of the palm tree nut slides down it is cut into 3 pieces and falls to the ground. The blades would simply slices into 3 pieces.
Until I kust saw the Bakersfield fatality, i sidnt know a palm Tree could strip itself down in a mass like that.. never seen a tree do it on its own either .Even after hurricanes.... Crazy
I don’t know how many palm trees I trimmed around 35th Ave. and Glendale in my years, but it was always dangerous. Poor people can’t afford to have their palm trees trimmed regularly.
Very true. I used to hate climbing under the palm skirts you couldn't see anything until you cut some of the leaves away and I never liked the way palms swayed in the wind. Take care!
Wow 😮 great video. Sth similar happened to me like that. I was blessed 🙏 the palm tree 🌴 did not have many throngs on it. If it did, the wait would have crushed me and I would not have been discovered until days later as I was working alone trying to make extra bucks. When things folded and fell on me, I kind of panicked and stater slicing at the base with the blade I had while using my elbow to support the weight from crushing down on me. A few minutes later, is was completely relieved 😌🙏 I did a total of about 5 or 6 palm trees 🌴 I got scratches, cramps, this incident that almost crushed me without me knowing it could of been the last day of my life, and also got stung by a few hornets 🐝 I see these types of videos as a reminder and all though it happened already, I still get scared of knowing I could be dead. Thank you dear God for always looking out for me 🙏🙏🙏🙏 Btw, all this madness for $100 bucks a tree. 🌴 I didn’t worry nor cared about the pain, cramps and dangers. I needed to work to sustain my family and myself… God bless everyone 🙏🙏🙏🙏
I’ll say that the climb-over technique needs really good upper body (back and shoulder) strength. If you don’t have the strength, please use a lift; there’s no reason to “cheat”.
i’ve been a climber for over 40 years and i actually moved to miami after doing tree work after hurricane Andrew and i cut plenty of palm trees down , i wasn’t aware of how dangerous they could be trimming the dead undergrowth , because after Andrew mother nature trimmed all of them basically by blowing all the stuff loose ,good thing im semi retired and up north again!
First Kudos to the fine gentlemen who preformed that palm rescue! We are a brotherhood, not competitive sport. Secondly; When I started climbing 17 years ago, I was told that my first purchases should be harness and gaffs, and a top handle chainsaw. DO NOT DO THAT! Thou shall never spike a tree you are not removing. The first thing you need is the most important, and one you must continue to acquire: KNOWLEDGE!

Great videos bud and I've made a few things from learning from you to use when I saddle hunt.
I get your point, I really likes they are very nice to walk in.
Yesterday I saw a video of a person who in Bakersfield, CA passed while working on a palm tree. I saw the video where firefighters were removing the person on palm tree. Very unfortunate
It's always sad to hear about these tragedies. I hope this video helps people be safer when working with palm trees.
I haven’t tried this method before I usually set my life line up before I go in so I can descend in an emergency. I like this will try it. Thank you as always for good content.
Nice, thank you take care!
Thanks!
You bet!
Never in 60 years knew that they went up there and trimmed that I thought when the weather changes they just fall off like leaves in the Midwest where I live wow, I could never handle that job
Thanks for sharing!
Very impressive, a beautiful thing watching trainer Martin climb the tree. Reminds me of PNW loggers/tree topper's skill. Both are dangerous jobs!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
I knew a guy named Mario from Sinaloa Mexico. Guy was brave 200 + feet redwoods no loft no nothing just a harness. We would do so many side jobs. I was a ground man . I should of appreciated him more. We also worked for a company and he was better than the owner and faster .
Thanks for sharing!
In the 90s a arborist fell off a palm tree, he fell backwards off a ladder but a branch on a tree behind him impaled him right up ass. It wen in upto his lungs.
That would be horrible!
Regular people, I mean owners of the Palm Trees, need to know all this, and accept the high cost to safety trimmer these trees.
Thanks for sharing!
That's an awesome video Bino thanks for sharing 👍...!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I think a few years back a guy built an automated tool that climbs the palm and makes cuts with a small circular blade with a video camera mounted on it.remote control tool.
Interesting I have not seen that.
Cheers!
Glad the information was helpful.
You're doing good work here. Thanks for the video.
Thank you too and thank you for watching!
Just watched a fatality recovery the other day in Bakersfield. Ppl in the comments said cut from the top.
It was a difficult choice but
My co-workers, the public, the company I worked for, the Union; safety came first. This is the most hazardous work in the world, and the most unforgiving. Expect the unexpected, from everything, and everyone, acts of God included. Stay safe! Loved my work. ❤
Thank you for sharing!
This is so unbelievable a tricky scenario. Prayers for all involved. This video information is priceless , thx
You're welcome!
Wow that's crazy. I know years ago when I went to school we touched on the subject a little bit but we don't have palm trees here
super bien expliqué Bino , merci beaucoup, signé : un ami de france
You're welcome!

Very sad situation. We hope that it does not keep on reoccurring. Take care!
Thanks for sharing!
"easily" 😮 need strength to fulfill that mission. Great video...i'm not a trimmer, but recognize the importance of this training...OSHA definitely would approve!!
Thank you!
Have arborists considered putting up a safety net or large pillow under the tree they will be working on before beginning ascent?
I don't believe that is practical.
Na, two pillows much better
A pillow? That is a big too Wiley Coyote isn't it?
I think cutting it from the top down hen palm trees have more than 3 years of growth is the rule in general and what they recommend. Using a lift is best.
You're cutting shit out've it as you go up. It would destroy nets and pillows. You just nut up and go up it.
Omg I had no idea this was even a thing that can happen to people!!
I good when people become aware.
Very interesting, important information. Well presented; thank you .
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for sharing!
@@BinoH your welcome
Awesome vid definitely applicable here in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷🌴
Good to hear!
What are your thoughts on using a pole saw when cleaning palms from underneath? A lot of guys in Australia do this
That works if the palm tree is short but if they're tall it's better to climb.
I've definitely been there! Thanks for sharing!
Topping Palm trees is crazy dangerous also, they don’t fall like other trees on your back cut. They’re like cutting a hemp rope
True they are different.
Thanks. Saw the Bakersfield accident and didn't understand what happened
You're welcome!
Very true!
Ive trimmed many trees like hardwood, pine , poplar but ive never trimmed a palm tree 🌴 and now ive learned something i didn't know that these palm trees would do that , very educational video, I'll never be trimming a palm tree thats for sure , ill leave that to the professionals....
Thanks for sharing!
@BinoH most welcome 🙏
Thank you for sharing your saving life’s💜
I appreciate you watching!
I don’t work with trees but I’ve learnt something today, thank you.
Glad to help
All new information for me. Thanx for this excellent instructional video. Newly subscribed. God bless.
Thank you take care!
Excellent video. I have been educated. I had no idea that this was a thing
You're welcome, it's a dangerous job!
Very Interesting.
Very Educational.
I'm glad you found it useful.
In my wife’s home country of Vietnam, this danger as well as the danger of being domed by a falling coconut is a real hazard.
Coconut palms can grow real high that could do some damage!
@@BinoH I'll try it, thanks!
@@BinoH I'd like to see that metal cap Bino if you have time
The top 4 most dangerous jobs on Earth are oil derrick worker, aircraft carrier worker, Alaskan fisherman, and lumberjack/tree trimmer ❤❤❤. May God continue to watch over all of you.
Thank you! Take care!
Extremely informative ❤ Please stay SAFE out there❣️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thanks, I appreciate it. 🙏
...extremely entertaining! YES! I enjoyed it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow man exalent information really
Glad you found it helpful!
In experience kills and maims, I know I fell feet from a palm in 1994. and bounced off the sidewalk. Got pretty mangled but lived. shattered elbow, collapsed lung, broken pelvis, bruises all over.
Sorry to hear that. Thank you for sharing!
So ,how people did it before drones and those slingshot?
0:09 What about putting a chain up there and tighten it around the trunk of the palm, put 3 sharp blades so when the weight of the palm tree nut slides down it is cut into 3 pieces and falls to the ground. The blades would simply slices into 3 pieces.
The dry fronds do not cut that easy. The best way is to work from the top down.
Amazing you got to be one crazy mother that was a beautiful house shame for the guy who died amazing video love them Palm trees
Hey Bino, so in the first example, they basically made a false crotch with a basal anchor and tied in from there?
Yes and used and used a Moving rope system.
Until I kust saw the Bakersfield fatality, i sidnt know a palm Tree could strip itself down in a mass like that.. never seen a tree do it on its own either .Even after hurricanes.... Crazy
There are lots of Mexican Fan Palms in California with lots of years of dead growth.
Thank you dear God for always looking out for me 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Btw, all this madness for $100 bucks a tree. 🌴 I didn’t worry nor cared about the pain, cramps and dangers. I needed to work to sustain my family and myself…
God bless everyone 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Wow thanks for sharing your story. 🙏
@@BinoH thank you 🙏
I’ll say that the climb-over technique needs really good upper body (back and shoulder) strength. If you don’t have the strength, please use a lift; there’s no reason to “cheat”.
True but using a foot and a knee ascender can make it a whole lot easier.
A thousand thank yous Bino.
RIP Bardomiano Bautista Perez. 🙏🌴
You're welcome and respect to your friend!
Grazie mille per questo interessante documentario
You're welcome!
i’ve been a climber for over 40 years and i actually moved to miami after doing tree work after hurricane Andrew and i cut plenty of palm trees down , i wasn’t aware of how dangerous they could be trimming the dead undergrowth , because after Andrew mother nature trimmed all of them basically by blowing all the stuff loose ,good thing im semi retired and up north again!
Thanks for sharing!
Very true to first comment and to the second comment that is huge and one of the best things you can do. Knowledge is Power!! Thank you!
A palm is not a tree.
Really good info Thanks,
Glad it was helpful!
It's amazing what man can do to make a money to support his family.
True!
A guy just died in Baker'sfield, California. I thought you made the video because of him but your video is one year old. I just watched the video of his body being recovered. Pretty sad.
I agree it is very sad. We made this video a year ago with the intention to spread the word of how dangerous it is.
Answer me htf they throw the rope so high up I'm confused or I missed something because shooting tht ball wasn't accurate enough 🙄🫡
How do you set the pulley above the palm tree?
Much respect to all tree dudes.
Thank you!
What about scaffolding as a quick way to erect a platform in backyards where theres less space?
The palms are a bit to high for scafolding.
I live in Wisconsin and have never seen a 🌴. Is that chain the only thing keeping the man with the Mohawk up high?❤
yes
Omg,this is the first time I have heard this. I've would've never thought that this could happen. I always thought from bottom was the right way. 😢
I hope this was helpful.
Honestly never thought about it. Snow state.
