Best part of any info given. You can share all knowledge possible. Dosent mean everyone hearing it will take it in or work on it or put it into practice. Most don’t have the drive or put in the effort regardless how much knowledge is given to them
just a whole lot of information to unpack with this episode (not to say each one isn't super thoughtful, but damn). glad to see greenbay bully on here 🤪. in all seriousness, glendale...after hearing your episode on the eden podcast, i have so much respect for you and your work (been following for 8 to 10 years now, at least). anyway, jon, matt, g money (when he's there), some of the best ppl/artists/inspirations arnd. plllzzzz keep it all up! the art, tattooing, podcasts, all phenomenal. I wish y'all posted new podcasts every single day. much love from the heart of tx, usa! and no, we aren't talking atx or dtx. satx is where the heart will ALWAYS be.
For the first 3 years of my career I didn’t get tattooed. It was a promise to my parents to wait until I was 21 and did 2 years of college. Lost opportunities with clients because I had no tattoos, they didn’t like the fact of someone permanently marking them without having actually experienced it.
Bobby Johnson hit right on with that comment about getting tattooed so he can elevate the experience with his clients.. I fucking hate getting tattooed and I want to be able to provide a better experience. Getting tattooed puts you in a state where you can relate to your clients
I attended Eden's winter symposium where Kevin and Bobby both presented! I almost didn't go because I don't even have my apprenticeship yet (met with Deanna about that 😉), but I messaged the shop and asked if I would look silly going, given that I'd never held a machine. They said there was no live tattooing, and some concepts may go over my head but I was welcomed in. I was so nervous everyone would think I was a poser to dare showing up, but everyone I spoke to was encouraging and applauded me for taking the initiative to learn. That seminar made me feel so certain I was in the right place among my people, and if the culture had been more gatekeep-y I wouldn't have gone. I'm so thankful the industry is moving in a compassionate direction thats as excited about art as I am. Thanks for a great podcast to listen to while I draw! I can't wait to join your ranks in the future! (Also, I got tattooed by Bryan Black in 2018 at Elm St Tattoo, so cool to see him here)
Also, if I had to name Bobby's style, I'd say Neo-Nouveau. Similar feeling to romantic, but I think his work with lines and delicate composition speak to a new rendition of art nouveau
Yooo I was there!! Everyone was so dope I literally cannot stop thinking about tattooing since then. Literally every day I’m straight up YEARNING to be better (not to be dramatic LOL) but fr seminars like that make good tattooers ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ as long as u keep up the work ethic and motivation Good luck with your endeavors :)
looking forward to seeing you grow and achieve everything you want and becoming a tattooer, in the future! glad you didn't back out! knowledge is more than power. it's everything! keep on studying.
I think a good point to bring up about seminars is everyone’s “years” of experience are different. You could take 2 artists who have been tattooing for say 5 years and there could be a noticeable gap between their abilities and knowledge. So then if you double that and take it to 10 year that gap can get larger. So it makes measuring abilities and knowledge based on years not as cut and dry as it sounds. But doing the hand selected portfolio route like you guys mentioned makes sense to me. Or even a minor interview possibly to see what people do and don’t know yet. Theres loads of incredibly skilled artists out there who still attend loads of seminars but are on the same or higher level than the person doing the seminar. So a minor interview may help sort out who is not only “under qualified” but possibly even “over qualified” for that particular seminar.
Completely agree! That’s why I think portfolio submissions should be a requirement for SOME but not all of the seminars and courses that are available out there.
im not a tattoo artist yet, still finishing my portfolio, however im not super inspired by the tattoo artists that are in my area... i know I'm at level zero so anyone in the industry will have SOMETHING to teach me, but its discouraging because Im not super inspired by them...
Yall I totally resonate with sooooo much of this. If u wanna be a tattooer, u will be. If you really fucking want it and u work hard every day and you are FILLED with passion and insatiable desire to be the best you can be. At that point it’s hard to be gatekept ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ all these artists have that in common. They fucking wanted it. And they got it. And they still want it and that’s why they’re at the top. Much respect and hope I’ll get there one day. Feels like I’ll always suck, but I’m motivated as fuck :)
Bobby tattooing at the level he does and winning ink master saying he isn't qualified to teach anyone to tattoo is INSANE. Ofc he can. I feel like his true reason is that he is too focused on his craft and that is totally all good. The man has the knowledge. Tons of bums out there taking on apprentices just to use them for free labor and take their fee. Bobby is the man.
Information and knowledge gate keeping is beyond stupid. No tattooer alive invented tattooing. They learned it from others based on knowledge past down for thousands of years. Imagine if the first person that ever figured out how to tattoo someone kept that knowledge to themselves. Tattooing would have just died before I was ever able to get my bad 90s tribal.
If you want to be a fitness trainer, you should probably work out. If you want to be a dentist, you should probably have good teeth. If you want to be a barber, you should probably get your hair cut.. etc
Jon’s tats shit all over everything Freddie did in their season. Bobby definitely won, but Jon should have been second place. Freddie had one played out style that got old real fast.
Any good tattooer can be a good copycat, but not every copycat can be a good tattooer. Take care guys!
such a dope episode!! So awesome to see you guys still getting together after Ink Master, keep it up fellas!!!

The last few episodes have been so good that I had to listen to them twice 🤙

Great conversation!
Gatekeeping - I would say is just a term for withholding knowledge
It is
Second! I love your podcasts !!!
Glad you like them!

John Mesa has gotta be in the running for one of the top 5 coolest guys that have ever lived.
This made me laugh out loud! 🙏🏽 you’re too kind, I appreciate it.
agreed.
Yelp there goes my apprenticeship with Bobby 😭😭😭
All good fellas. The patreon sub is the least I can do for the info I get from the convos you guys have. Cheers!
Much appreciated!

gate keeping only kept the real artists from taking over. you have those supposed god fathers to thank for that

John I don’t believe your hair is real, it’s too perfect. Who does your CGI?
I hate the ppl that knock you for watching anime dubbed. Shit.... the sub titles give me a fucking migraine.
First🤓🤓🤓
Long hair dude is wack
