  • I am the worst at trying to summarize my feelings of a game in a short paragraph here so let me keep this simple and sweet. This game is unlike anything I have ever played. The unique story, the approachable yet challenging boss designs, and of course the most incredible dialogue that brings ours characters to life - you can't help but hope more people play and discover this gem. Thank you for investing your time into this playthrough with me and I hope you enjoyed seeing it through my eyes 💛
See yall for a potential Parasite Eve II at some point in the future... after all, the mitochondria are always lurking within us so, is it ever truly over (: ???

The true final boss and ending is on the chrysler building during the NG+, that ending will explain the aya that you see on the Beginning of Parasit eve 2.

My PS2 wouldn't run disc 2 as well, and I waited more than a decade to see what happens. Thank you so much for finding a way to finish this game. What a great story, and I'm excited to see what happens in Parasite Eve 2!

I want a remake of this series more than anything other than Final Fantasy 6! Each PE game plays differently and has its own vibe. Yes, the 3rd Birthday is not what people wanted or expected but it was probably the most fun for me gameplay-wise and the music and graphics are still very good. I even replay it at times (which is rare for me with games). Anyway, thanks for sticking it out through all your bad luck and finishing this! I really look forward to watching you play PE2!!

Daniel surviving without a scratch is so wild. So is an opera having actual fire on the stage, ESPECIALLY after what happend like a week before 😂 But it fits the action-horror tone. Also love how Aya's the only one who actually dressed up for the opera. The final shot with Aya alone in a sea of red eyes / mitochondria is genuinely chilling.

Both the boss and chase themes are iconic! And that last chase is just pure evil, especially the last save spot that is just a trap 😂 You can actually try saving but then Aya will just stay there until the boss kills her and you have to do the ENTIRE boss fight again. Same if you make a wrong turn. Just pure evil.

Finally finished watching the whole playthrough! It was so fun! Thank you!!
You totally made the right call skipping the intro movie, since it had cutscenes from throughout the game. Still kinda wanted to see your reaction watching it after finishing the game.
Although I did finish the game when I was a kid, I didn't remember it being so hard. I do remember losing focus alot during the museum part since it was so long.
Looking back at it now, yeah the PS1 graphics are really pixelated but you kinda get used to it in time. The atmosphere, battle mechanics, pacing still look fantastic. And that music!💕

Congrats on beating it! Sucks about the disc issues. My copy got damaged by a friend so central park is where it messes up. Glad i have it on my vita though! There is a NG+ that opens up the story at the end for a Gauntlet like dungeon, that gives the true ending, and much more story.

  • @Digital_David

19:25 Brilliant move, Maggie! In all of these years, I never knew that swapping your armor could trigger your PE to regenerate again: in all of my play throughs, I just assumed I was left to the rest of my devices for the battle, once the PE gauge stopped filling.
Oh, I have to ask - during the game's ending, did Aya's body-bounce to her date at the Opera cross your mind? It's such a memorable moment, but so much has happened by the end of the game that it can easily slip my mind. One of my best laughs in gaming history. Aya takes no crap!
1:11:15 Can we all agree that the entire scene (from the time Daniel jumps out of the helicopter until he lands in the water) looks extremely impressive, considering this game was from 1998ish??? I was noticing how cool it looks.
1:33:58 Yes, I know what you mean. After you beat the final boss battle, this game trolls you SO hard. Small wrong turns, slowdowns or stopping to save almost guarantees an instant game over. I recall having to try to escape quite a few times.

  • @holy_lettuce
    @holy_lettuce 8 днів тому +1

Lord have mercy the disc not working and skipping would have frustrated me to no end hahaha wow, also I think you may be right about the end being more ominous. I did not think that til you explained it and I was like that makes more sense. This playthrough was really fun to watch and I was shocked to see Tetsuya Nomura be a designer in this again. He has been with square way longer than I thought. This playthrough has been funny, cool and full of character! Definitely one I will remember especially finally knowing the full story myself now, see you in Parasite Site Eve 2!
Quick edit: I would recommend a PSVita over a PSP because it can play all the psp games as well as PS1 games (If modded super easy to do) really well and better. There is a PSVita that has a proprietary charger OLED model, the other is Micro USB LCD model. It is cheaper to buy from japan and ship to US than buying in the US. Mercari makes that easy. It is easy to hack as well only takes 5 mins I have done a few and they are amazing. I recommend the LCD as the OLED is older and is more susceptible to burn in, however it is all up to user preference.

The Parasite Eve novel was made into a movie in Japan. Should be easy to find, (captioned or subtitled) on UA-cam. Then you'll know the full story if the "previous incident" Maeda talks about.

Loved this game as a child. personal opinion, this was dearer to me than the final fantasys, except maybe Final Fantasy Tactics. i ran across an old movie i found online a few years ago, which is made from the novel, a prequel of when the first failed instance happened in japan. I heard that the story board from this game was left over ideas from early Final Fantasy 7's development, being less fantasy and more grounded in reality. Thank you for the interesting and entertaining playthrough

I don't have anything useful to add to the Parasite Eve conversation, other than to say, STAY AWAY FROM THE MOVIE. It's SO BAD. I do find it admirable that you carried all of Maeda's charms with you until the end. I stored each one of them as soon as I could. XD
Anyway, the only thing I have to contribute is that I was watching this video when I realized that I hadn't yet subscribed to your channel, so this time I remembered and did it. Aren't you happy. lol

Been watching you for a while, echoing all the comments about you being an exceptional LPer -- you remind me a bunch of KayPlays, a retired youtuber who had a short career; she was also really methodical and inquisitive (went from being someone who didn't really play games all that much to jumping into the Dark Souls series), stopping to appreciate details, ruminate on lore or craft or whatever.
Great work on the series, and I'm glad you really liked Parasite Eve. It is such a terrible shame that they never ever made any sequels to it. Not one. 😔
I'm joking; while I do have extremely Strong Opinions about the next two titles (while I'm in the vocal minority in thinking the second was already too much of a tonal departure, the confusion, dislike and outright revulsion of the third is sort of infamously universal if you've been around long enough to have seen it live. Think: what Aliens Vs. Predator is to Alien and Aliens, or the Hellraiser series vs. its original, or Halloween, or... etc), I'm sure you're itching to see where the story goes, considering how much you liked this one -- even if your community is probably shouting a thousand warnings at you to temper your expectations lol. I hope you end up enjoying them though!
    assorted comments:
    - like a lot of others, I hugely appreciate you going out of your way to play these on original hardware (I was unreasonably excited when I saw that you played the original Shadow of the Colossus, scared my gf with a loud "oh hell yeah" when I saw you chose to play that versus the bluepoint remake), have you considered switching to maybe an episode of browsing the physical manual/case + some exploratory gameplay before moving on to faithful (vanilla, no frills) emulation plus CRT/scanline shaders?
While better load times and some bug dodging is nice, the real reason would be *for* the scanline emulation, presuming you have a nice enough monitor. I apologize if you already know all this and I'm being obnoxious, but for those that don't know, games of this era weren't reeeeaaally supposed to look like this -- jagged unailisaed edges; unfiltered, pixelated textures, etc. Game assets were very cleverly authored to be displayed on CRT monitors, where the "screen door" scanlines were leveraged to create both the illusion of additional detail and provide smoother transitions between colors. There are many videos that cover this, but a recent one I saw pop up in my recs was: ua-cam.com/video/28u6RoYiCWI/v-deo.html (if that doesn't link properly, the video is "Why You NEED to Try CRT Shaders (PC Emulation)" by YTer "Retro Renew")
There are comparisons in that video and elsewhere that show the black magic devs were able to conjure up. It's an absolute transformation of the art -- not "despite" limitations, but because of them. For me, in a lot of ways "straight, unaltered emulation (no texture filtering or other nonsense) + scanline emulation" feels way more of a true experience than just originalish hardware into a capture card. You might've (probably?) already had these convos behind the scenes since capturing as much of what the original experience might've be like is clearly high on your list of considerations, but I'd be remiss to not show that there are folks out there (like me) that would kill to see an exceptional LPer do exceptional LPer things while seeing the game the way it would've been seen, back in the day!
    - I cannot wait for your inevitable FFIX playthrough. I'm one of those absolute, miserable freaks that, despite liking all of Squaresoft's PS1 offerings, considers FFVIII their favorite. However, I think FFIX is IMMEDIATELY, disarmingly charming and I think you're gonna love it. It's also, in my opinion, the first time FF had truly stellar localization. (My actual prediction is you'll love all three PS1 era FF titles and might actually rank VIII higher than most people after chewin' on it after a while -- but IX seems super up your alley for different reasons that will be evident when you get through 'em).
    - Parasite Eve is such an inspired transition from the PS2 to PS1 era Final Fantasies, so huge shoutouts to you or whoever suggested it. Released after VII, it was the testbed for the new engine that would eventually power FFVIII -- there was a bit of tech debt they had to settle and it was the dang wild west out there in terms of 3D graphics.
Everything was new and confusing and they had to play it by ear... so why not develop a game specifically to learn how to do all the cool cinematic things they really wanted to do in the 3D era but didn't know how to, yet? Worked out wonderfully with this moody, strange sort-of-sequel-to-a-book game. FFVII was decidedly dieselpunk (before the aesthetic took more of a "modern fantasy pastiche" turn in the remake series... something I'm still a tiny bit bitter about because I'm old and change is difficult), but FFVIII was to be filled with way more contemporary technology, and the experience of crafting believable environments and less stylistically-proportioned characters in PE helped a bunch I'm sure, too. Side note, did you know that early in development, FFVII was supposed to take place in Manhattan? Guess when the inspiration bug bites you, you kinda have to make it a reality.
    - I probably missed it, but I hope you caught the Final Fantasy series easter egg on the world map model of the Museum of Natural History! It's very cute lol
    - There isn't a game that would benefit more from a full remake than Parasite Eve. It's fully and truly an example of a bunch of brilliant minds working within limitations; paradoxically, they managed to both exceed those limits yet never fully were able to grasp the level of cinematic storytelling they clearly had the ambitions for. The licensing has gotten weird over the years, but I genuinely believe a remake (and full reboot of the series) could act as a pillar in modern, big budget horror-adjacent games, like the newer Resident Evil titles and such.
Thanks again for the playthrough! 🙏🙏🙏

      @sunshine7590 12 днів тому

addendum: I also want to say that the unfiltered textures/unaliased edges 3D retro look that indie games are bringing back is just as awesome as what people have been doing with pixel art in previous indie eras! I'm not anti-"this look" at all, especially for games that are authored to look this way as an intentional aesthetic choice. I'm by no means some unhinged retro game purist and don't want to give anyone any weird ideas like I'm saying they should be played "the correct way" -- every way that brings you to an experience is the correct way, full stop. Was just making a note, is all!

Back when this game was a brand new release, I had to buy a second copy because my first copy locked up right before Eve's final form. No scratches or smudges; disc 2 was just bad. This game blew me away way back when it released. It was sandwiched between FF7 and FF8 and you could really tell they upped the quality from FF7 like crazy for the graphics-- they really were insane when this game came out. It was carnage out of the gate from the opera scene and never really held back, from the grotesque CGI scenes, to the charred bodies and mature themes, it's also the first game I remember with footstep sound effects. Yoko Shimomura who did the soundtrack would go on to work on Kingdom Hearts and FF15, she's truly a gifted composer.
Glad you loved the game, there's still the 2nd playthrough optional Chrysler building for the 'real ending', but it's a doozy and not for the faint of heart.

One thing to know about Parasite Eve 2, Aya has *A LOT* of inner dialogue when checking around, its not the typical check once and done kinda thing, most of the times *she has multiple lines of dialogue* per thing you inspect, so check stuff multiple times (and on top of that there is a lot to inspect, way more than in PE1 btw)
Also, you can fully customize the controls on the options to make it more in-line with other games.

You know what is funny, I thought I'd watch your PE1 gameplay so I don't have to play it myself since i'm not very fan of the combat mechanics, well it turn outs that I had totally played and finished Parasite Eve 1 and my mind just erased that from my memory, I think because I've played Parasite Eve 2 so many times since that and I like it a lot more, I recommend to play it in all the it difficulty modes, it so rewarding and the combat a LOT more challenging that the first one.

I couldn't help but be bothered at the fact that you get a gun from maeda but it's damage is only 1? It has to mean something and then I found this on the web "During the final battle, when you fight the mature form the Ultimate Being, you are given a crate of bullets that can only be fired by this gun. During this time, Maeda's Gun is the only firearm capable of doing beyond one point of damage-and in fact does at least 999 damage per shot due to the fact that said bullets have Aya's cells in them"

Great playthrough, unfortunate with the technical issues, I still play this on the PS Vita once a year around Christmas. The number of EX Games on the save counter is ridiculous 😅. I do think the next two titles are a bit inferior to this first one, but I still genuinely love this franchise; they're still decent games to play for some sense of closure.

PS1 discs which are CD based are more prone to scratches than future disc types. PS2 discs are DVD based which are more scratch resistant than CDs, and PS3 discs are Blu-rays which are even more scratch resistant than DVDs. So I think the most problems you'll encounter will probably be PS1 discs.
You may try orienting your PS2 in a vertical orientation to see if it will read better. Be careful to only switch positions when the system is off and the disc is out of the tray otherwise you may risk scratching it even more.

Some games you might enjoy are
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee and Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus.
The Metal Gear saga is epic but you will get hooked for at least four games and you would need to invest in a PS3 to play the fourth (worth it).
Tomb Raider 1,2, 3, and 4 are classics.
Pretty sure you already have Dino Crisis on your lineup.
    On the PS2 there is
    Kingdom Hearts.
    Resident Evil: Code Veronica X.
I assume Silent Hill 4 is already in consideration now that you have completed 3.
Bloodrayne and Bloodrayne 2 are enjoyable enough but I absolutely despise the controls.
If you invest in a PS3 (most of which can be bought on Steam for PC) there is
Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.
God of War 1 and 2 (haven't checked if you already played those).
    L.A. Noire.
    Assassin's Creed series.
    Far Cry 3.
    The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
    The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim
    The Dragon Age series.

There is a second ending but unless you LOVE the gameplay you night want to just watch the ending, because it's quite the ordeal and there's basically no story until the last boss.

It you want to play S-E's most wildly ambitious game (story-wise) with a beautiful soundtrack, try out Xenogears. It's pretty long compared to the other games in S-E's PS1, though.

Congratulation on finishing the game. But this ending is first ending and a bad one... some said the true ending is to finish chrysler building, ...that's where the final boss is,...the true boss.... well i guess Now it is time 4u to go to 77th floor chrysler building.....

you need to play it for the second time , there is a whole new location with multiple floors and 2nd ending.
it is done similar to resident evil 2, where on first play you get 1 boss and short ending and on 2nd playthrough you get another boss and extended ending. PE1 and PE2 have good replayability. That said do not touch PE3 game, its a complete garbage
