Madonna's literary, cinematic and musical references are incredibly wide-ranging. Here she is doing a brilliant mash up of A Clockwork Orange and Bob Fosse's Cabaret. As usual, she makes it her own because she has a very clear understanding of her sources. The Girlie Show references classic French cinema, classic German cinema, James Brown, lots of seventies stuff. It's brilliant. Just as good as Blond Ambition. Maybe even better, to my mind, but perhaps not quite as iconic.
I really wish I had been old enough to have seen her on the Blond Ambition tour. It is, without a doubt, her best tour (both choreographically and in terms of the songs she chose), im my opinion.
Matthew C This tour set the Standard in dance and song performances. She was already ruling the world at this point. Just the Theatrical flair was so worth watching. This was truly amazing So sad the dancers turned around and sued her and they never worked again with her.
@mlc2005 me too. I was about little over 10 then but she didn't come near me so it wasn't happening. I remember when I watch and copied BA on vhs and I still got that but don't have video player. Oh surprise. I got so much material on vhs. I need to move them to dvd.
I can't believe I'm saying this but I kinda miss the old Madonna social society effect.. if that makes sense I guess the laid back attitude to life she elicited in culture and society I can't believe I'm saying this but the 2010s and 2020s are an upright era..this new generation is so uptight and so is government and police etc..where is the balance these days between work and downtime?
such a good song!!!!! maybe even better than Like a Prayer... but kinda silly/sad to know that it peaked at number eight on the Hot 100 but then Vogue totally overshadowed it (rightfully so as Vogue is one of Madonna's career-defining hits) & now it's just another forgotten gem. :P
I don't care about chart positions lmfao just saying this song peaked high up on the charts but Vogue made ppl forget about it... it's not included on any greatest hits compilations.
um your snide comment shows your ignorance....that was before that era and she has a english accent here because of Clockwork Orange what this piece is based on
One of the best performance of Madonna

when madonna was THE Madonna
Sorry to disappoint you but she IS still the MADONNA!

In reality that accent she puts here is inspired in Alex of the movie A Clockwork Orange.
At her best!

@TheFever77 I think she still thinks she's English, her new accent hasn't changed yet.
Keep it together today, Madonna! Get a facelift, and get your ass back on stage where it belongs!
