2019 - SOLO ARCHERY ELK HUNT - NEW MEXICO UNIT 36
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 гру 2024
- I was lucky enough to draw the tag for second archery season in Unit 36 New Mexico this year. I drove down from Vancouver BC and hunted the White Mountain Wilderness solo. I did my best to capture my adventure as it unfolded. I have been hunting elk for the last 5 years every fall and until this year I had been unsuccessful in my quest to kill an elk. I hope you enjoy my story.

Shout out from New Mexico! Dude, this hunting video is literally the best fucking hunting video I have seen on UA-cam. I love that it's 40 min long and it had so much detail. I learned a lot from it. Thanks for walking us through it and teaching us you went through it.
Thanks so much for the feedback bro! I love making these things for this exact reason. And thank you for welcoming non-residents into your home for us to experience hunts like this. I absolutely love NM and can't wait to come back and film some more hunts!
Great video! You have some big stones doing all that by yourself. That was a long drive and a lot of country just to get to here.
Thats was some definitely some big country. I admire your determination and relentlessness to keep trying despite all your failed attempts. We as hunter have all experienced our own failures but its our success that makes the meat taste even better and keeps us coming back for more! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment man! This was by far, my favourite hunt to date.
I’ve watched a ton of hunting videos as I’m preparing to go on my first elk hunting trip next year in Idaho and I think yours is one of my favorites.
I will say what I appreciated more than anything was what you put in to the video, explaining what you were doing and your rationale as well as how raw and unabated it was. The introspection bit at the end was worth more than gold. To have the ability to have those moments when you can fully test yourself and pause for introspection, that is what it’s all about to me also. Too many people get wrapped up in this fake world and don’t value the moments we can truly appreciate the most basic and fundamental parts of being human. I experienced that on deployment when I was in the Marines and I guess that’s why I fell in love with hunting after I got out because it affords me the opportunity to get away from everything and how much more basic does it get than having to work your ass off to source your own food. Great job and congratulations on the successful hunt. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thanks for taking the time to watch and I sincerely appreciate the thoughtfulness of your reply. I definitely have some frustrations with a lot of the hunting content out there these days and my goal was just to make something honest and transparent. I am not a great hunter and I still have a lot to learn but I love being out there and I am glad that comes through in the video. Thanks again!
I live in this unit and glad to see an out of state hunter come and do what most would never do to get it done 🤙🏻 and love how raw the video was !! 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻 congrats !
Thanks for welcoming non-residents like me to your state brother! I love NM!
raw as opposed to cooked?
Awesome video! Been listing to the podcast for about a year now and I love it! Doing my 1st archery elk hunt this September! Thanks for all you do!
My pleasure man. Good luck this year!
Your explanation about changing gear was incredibly helpful!! Thank you for being so thorough!
🙌
Had to watch your video again for inspiration because I finally drew this unit for 2nd archery. I'm a local so I recognize the area you hunted and I actually plan on hunting the same area. Can't wait! Great video again by the way!
Good luck man! Let me know how you make out!!
Was just googling this unit while figuring out my New Mexico application strategy and found this amazing video. Super excited to go now if I can manage a tag.
Thanks man. A few guys were good enough to share some info with me when I drew the tag that’s why I wanted to put the unit number in the video. It’s so hard to draw that unit you wanna do everything you can to have a good hunt. Let me know if you’re lucky enough to draw.
Awesome video man. The footage on the drive home was just so well said. Can’t wait to check out your other videos.
Thanks bro! Hunt of a lifetime. Best of luck this season!
Nicely done! I appreciate seeing the old vs new version of you. Your videography has improved but the story telling in the same!
💪
Great job putting the video together. The whole story over powers not having shot footage. Congratulations on and amazing adventure ending with all kinds of victories.
To be honest I wasn't even that upset that I didn't get the kill shot on film. I did the best I could with what I had and I am happy with how it turned out. I'm very glad that you felt the same. I do think the story itself is more important than the kill shot.
Mindful Hunter absolutely
I have been elk hunting DIY for 31 seasons, your introspective comments are right on. Physically it’ll get harder but pushing whatever limits I have doesn’t change the glory of getting it done. Great bull and hunt, congrats
You're an inspiration! I hope I can say the same years from now.
Fantastic job brother! Great video perspective. Felt like I was right there with you, genuine video. Even without the shot on video, the experience was absolutely felt. The best part of it for me was your personal thoughts on all the individual self aspects of woodsman ship and self providing. In more ways than just merely hunting. Everything that you said in the cab of your truck on your way home is so spot on in my perspective as well. well thought out, encompasses all aspects of life and self. Individualized expansion of self! Really easy to resonate with your thought process and personal insight. You are a highly self aware outdoorsman with the eloquence to express it perfectly! Well done brother. Our greatest and most rewarding task in this life is to simply “ know thyself” and I believe that if nature is the source in which to accomplish that task it renders all other “ accredited degrees” useless we as individuals determine wether we have graduated certain aspects of life, never to be determined by someone other than the self. Good work!
Thank you so much for the heartfelt comment brother. That right there, is exactly why I make these!
Amazing. My big question is how you rucked it all out solo and preserved it to get to Canada. Makes me nervous as some states I have no friends to help with meat
I was lucky enough to have a little help. I just kept it in coolers on ice and flipped it every 12 hours.
@@MindfulHunter then did you process it when you got home? Also this is the best solo hunt video I have ever seen. As a purple heart veteran trying to set up elk hunts myself its inspiring. Although I will like only got 5 miles in and hunt around camp. I don't want to limit my physical ability to ruck out the meat. Cheers brother
@@hesko125 that means the word to me. Thanks man. I quartered and deboned in the files and then did the final butchering at home. Left it in game bags in the cooler.
@@MindfulHunter awesome man. Super awesome to share the reality of quitting and almost falling out to heat and lack of water. Also 5 years of hardship to get it done. I bet that meat was the world. After the marines east coast hunting blows. Sitting in pain all day on a 8 inch ass pad. Hard pass. Hope I can get it done in wyoming with a general tag this year
@@hesko125 good luck this season man
Beautiful video. Even without the kill shot this is one of my favorite videos yet, and I’ve watched dozens if not hundreds. Loved the message at the end.
Thanks so much for the comment man I really appreciate it. Glad you enjoyed the film.
Pretty awesome to see my back yard produce such an awesome experience for you!! This is hands down my favorite archery nm elk hunt video ever!
I’m in love with NM. And thank you for being such gracious hosts and allowing us non-residents to come, hunt and feel welcome. Nothing but awesome people down there.
Great work!! That’s a STUD of a first bull, and solo at that! Fog is a archery elk hunters dream! It limits their sight and sometimes their scent, move in fast when you have fog and bugling bulls! You learned the lesson of NEVER EVER bugle or call without a release on lol! Also, you’re totally right on not calling too much from far away. Locate a bull, and do not call again until you think you’re inside of 100 yards of him and his cows. You will bump elk, but you really need to get in his “bubble”. Awesome video dude!
Thanks man! It was an amazing hunt.
I’ve watched my share of archery elk hunting vidoes and that was awesome! I like the fact you didn’t sugar coat anything and the raw emotions! The F bomb comments are part of the hunt and I’m glad you didn’t edit that part. I live in AZ and since I can’t seem to draw a tag here, I applied for NM for the 2020 season, as well as a friend of mine. We applied separately as neither one of us care who gets to hunt, we just want the experience of the hunt with each other. So hopefully one of us will draw a tag. Fingers crossed!
You did a great job of self filming and I appreciate you sharing that with us. I really liked your perspective on what hunting does for us as a person.
Congrats on a great hunt and all the hard work and dedication!
Thanks so much for the comment brother! And I also appreciate the thoughts on swearing. Some people give me shit about that but it's how I talk in real life and I want these videos to be as authentic as possible so I am just going to be me and for those of us like us it works. Got my fingers crossed for you and your hunting partner man. If you draw and I can bo of any help please let me know.
Mindful Hunter you’re welcome! Don’t change anything on how you video your hunts. I swear some in real life too, so it’s going to happen on video too. It’s going to be a long 5 weeks or so until the NM draw results. According to the odds calculator on “Toprut” my buddy and I have a 1 in 7 chance to get drawn individually. So I look at it like a 2 in 7 chance for one of us to draw. Keeping our fingers crossed 🤞. If NM doesn’t pan out we will look at other options for this year. I can’t recall if your video mentions the unit you’re hunting or not. Can I ask what unit you were hunting? Did you make the drive to NM straight through? That’s a long drive by yourself! I’ll let you know if we get drawn. Be safe in this crazy time we are going through now.
@@glend4704 I was in unit 36. Awesome Unit. Also, super slim draw odds. Yeah I did the drive straight through solo. With time for naps, it took me 36 hours one way.
Mindful Hunter thanks for the info. I applied to unit 15 late hunt unit 49 early hunt and unit 53 early hunt for the 2020 NM archery season. You’re a beast for driving straight through! I hunted Idaho last year and it was a 14 hour drive and I pulled over and spent the night in my camper on the way.
Outstanding video! I think you did a great job of hunting, strategizing and executing this hunt. Your first bull is one that will stay with you, even more so because you did it solo. I've only been elk hunting since 2011 and have been successful 4 times in over 20 hunts. People don't realize how difficult elk hunting is, especially with a bow or muzzleloader. It is a lot of work, and the vast majority of that work comes after your elk is on the ground. I packed out two elk by myself and succumbed to cramps and fatigue, it's not fun, but it is worth it. It is the price you pay for being able to take one of these magnificent animals home to feed you family with for months to come. Well done, just loved your post.
Thanks so much for taking the time to watch my film and leave a comment. Elk hunting sure is a grind but we wouldn't have it any other way :)
What a stud!! I hope you had that bad boy shoulder mounted !! Appreciate the video and your thought process. I have my first elk hunt this September and I’m loving the prep and respect you guys so much.
Unfortunately I lived in a townhouse at the time and didn't have room. The euro looks badass though.
@@MindfulHunter ahh! Loved the content either way.
Right on Man! I can relate with everything you said at the end. I am going on my 5th year with no Kill, but it has all been worth it and my drive continues to build. Very impressed and inspired. Thanks for sharing your experience. Congratulations!
Thanks so much man! Good luck this year bro! It'll happen!
I really enjoyed experiencing your hunt. Not only through your lense, but your mind. The mental and physical aspects of the hunt are what drive me too. I'm heading into year 2 of my elk quest. Heading back into the same wilderness area in Colorado. I currently have a healing broken ankle, but those bugles are calling. You understand...
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. Glad you liked the film. And yes, the countdown is on! Good luck this year brother.
Wow, this was incredible. Thanks for sharing. With content like this I will watch every single one of your videos. You are so right in regards to other hunting channels. No struggles, no rationale, just the success. Videos like that do a disservice to novice hunters, making it look easy. Would love to hear about your supply and cooking setup. I mainly use a jetboil for meals and never light a fire. Also to the comments complaining about you sweating and cussing...really? Love the struggle, keep up the good work.
Thank you very much for the feedback. You nailed exactly why I started this channel. I recently started a podcast and dive into some more technical discussions on gear. Check those out and if you have any more questions just let me know.
To do it yourself is a must in life great video and set of mind to do it yourself .it took me 5 years as well to seal the deal.now they just get bigger. Just have fun and we always learn in life
Thanks man!
Love your persistent attitude after so many attempts there going to start stacking up now. great job
Appreciate the feedbakc!
Thank you for sharing your experience and congratulation ! Looking forward to see what cooking for you in the next Aventure chasing elk in those beautiful beautiful places , cheers !
That’s awesome man! Thanks so much for the great feedback. I’m leaving in 4 weeks for a solo goat hunt in Northern BC. Hoping it will be one of my best films yet!
I love the outro! The pain and suffering we go through. That want to quit. We never know what we are capable of until we push ourselves beyond! Great video. Thank you for sharing this journey. Well disserved harvest.
Thanks for the support brother!
Congrats! That's a great unit, I live in it and I still haven't drew an elk tag for it!
I was shocked when I saw that I drew it. I had to refresh the screen several times before I would believe it.
What a great solo hunt and video. It was very enjoyable to watch. My wife has the same hunt this year! We are pumped!!!
Good luck! And thank you 🙏
Great hunt Beautiful Country thanks for the experience and taking us on the ride with you what part of New Mexico
Truly my pleasure. Glad you enjoyed it.
Unit 36
What a super video!! I admire the effort and willingness to travel as far as you did to make it happen. We stop at nothing and do whatever it takes to be successful. Great job my friend!!!
Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and send some feedback. I'm super grateful I had the opportunity.
Yes sir!! If you ever decide to come back to New Mexico I know a lot of excellent elk country. I've hunted here my entire life. Let me know. God bless!
Great video! Thanks for bringing us along on your hunt and congratulations on a successful hunt.
Thanks! It was an amazing opportunity
“He just wants to fight or fu#k hardcore” had me rolling! Great video, super raw straight to the point, great footage, and great shot and most importantly great bull! You did an awesome job, keep up the hard work and videos coming! Las Cruces NM 👍🏽
Jonathan Juarez thank you so much man. I love making theses things and it’s great when guys like you enjoy watching them!
This is a great video and congrats of your first bull! I really appreciate hearing your thought process out in the wild trying to get it done. Elk hunting will test the abilities of any man to the max, and that is before you get one down! Once you succeed the real work begins. Packing out an elk is a horrible combo of power lifting and marathon type cardio, with much needed mental toughness to get all the meat back to the truck. I had the joy of helping someone get their first elk ever and halfway back to the truck he stopped on the road, looked at me and said that this is the hardest thing he had ever done in his life! When we could see the truck and only had a quarter mile of road to go I told him, there it is the finish line, your a real hunter now. This man had killed many white tail deer in his lifetime, but packing out a bull elk is on a whole other level. Hunting is 99 percent failure all the time, that's why the one time we succeed is so special. You never look at steak the same way after enduring the pain and agony of a multi day elk hunt. Congrats on a nice bull and a memory of success for the rest of your life!
I couldn't agree more brother!
Excellent job bro! Planning, preparation, and ability to adapt all paid off large. You worked your nuts off for that bull and got it done. Congratulations. Takes balls and brains to do that hunt solo
Thanks so much man. I had an absolute blast.
Congratulations! I killed my first bull with a bow this year in the same unit. I've learned so much about myself hunting, and its given me so many life lessons that I use every day.
That's awesome man! Such a great unit.
How many years did it take you to get drawn?
Crary part is this was my first year entering the draw in New Mexico. I had to refresh the page three times before I would believe I actually drew the tag.
I loved the rawness of the video. This is what real hunting is like. I too have fallen apart on a limited entry hunt in Utah. I was emotionally spent and gave up. Good luck in the future.
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment. I'm glad you enjoyed watching. And I do believe if we've never given up out there before it's only because we haven't pushed hard enough so good on ya!
Just a great, great hunt. Glad you were able to tag out this year, here in New Mexico. This is a great place to live and to hunt big game. Your video was really good, but just like you said, wish you had some video footage of the actual take down of your bull elk. Great job for your overall well being. This was a personal endeavor, unlike some people that try to do these type of hunts for a living of sorts. Well done ! !
Yeah I'm trying to get better at turning the GoPro on for that last bit of action. Still have a lot to learn, but I'm getting there.
Rock on man !!! That was the best and most inspirational hunting video I have ever seen !!
Wow man, thanks so much. I really appreciate the feedback.
I forgot how pretty this unit is until I watched your video. My cousin and I took our first elks there in 2019 as well. Rifle season so just shortly after this.
That’s awesome. Love this place.

@@brianredban9393 sorry I'll try to learn plurals so not to upset you. The better question is why are you pretending to be Brian Redban?
Dude this video was awesome! I’m trying to draw for my first elk hunt and really appreciate all of the insight.
Thanks brother. Really appreciate that. Best of luck on the draw!
Did you draw anything?
Awesome Story, Awesome hunt.... I love your STUFFFFF

Got my hunt in this unit in a few weeks. Can’t wait! Congrats on your bull, he’s a beauty 🤙🏻
Good luck man! Awesome unit!
Very good sir, very good. Congratulations on sticking with it. You have memories to last a lifetime.
Absolutely! Thanks man!
Nice work brother! Way to keep to the plan and stick with it.
Thanks bro!
The only video I have see with raw language. Great video and keep them comin
Trying to keep it as realistic as I can. That's the way I talk so that's the way I film :) SUper glad you liked it and thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!
Cut my ivories in unit 36.
There’s a reason it’s been referred to as the most difficult unit to hunt elk or anything else.
I recognize the area you are hunting.
Good job man.
Thanks brother. One of my favourite places on earth. Coming back the NM this Jan for archery mule deer.
Bro, you are awesome!! I’m so pumped you got it done!
Thanks brother. Was the hunt of a lifetime.
Awesome story of a journey with positive results. Loved it and watched the entire video.
Sincerely glad you enjoyed it!
Great bull - nice shot - congrats!! Way to put in the work
Thanks man!
Nice bull for 2019. This year 2020 was dry, bulls are smaller. Congrats on your first bull. Unit 36 produces some great bulls each year.
Yeah I had a damn tough year up here in BC. Definitely missed NM this sept for sure!
Amazingly inspiring story about life and elk. I enjoyed the passion! Great bull!
I'm really glad you enjoyed the film. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!
@@MindfulHunter I've entered the New Mexico Draw for units 34-36-37 this year. Fingers crossed :)
@@jeffmichel7191 Good luck. Make sure to hit me up if you draw the tag and I'll give you some spots.
Man what a trip, you deserve that successful hunt. Congrats man from down under
💪
Kick ass video!! Congratulations on your bull!
Thanks brother! Hunt of a lifetime for me.
What camera setup were you using ? Other than the go-pro on your head.
My main DSLR is a Sony A7iii and I use a 24mm f1.4 F lens. I use to carry a second lens but stopped. Wasn't worth the extra weight in the backcountry. Another handy item is the peak designs capture pro clip. I use this to clip my camera to my backpack strap for when I am walking around.
Being from BC myself, a question I have is do you need to hire a guide to help you get the tag down there? Or just put as non resident?
You put in as a non-resident. No need for a guide. There are exceptions where you can get increased odds if you put in with the guide outfitter in certain states. If you look at my podcast I did two full episodes episode three and episode four where I cover how do I apply for tags in the states as a Canadian.
@@MindfulHunter thanks the help I’ll check them out!
Awesome story man! Fantastic. 💪🏼💪🏼
Thanks brother! Appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment.
@@MindfulHunter anytime brother. I got to hunt mule deer in NM on a diy in 45 (2019). Had a great time and killed my first mule deer. I’m currently in the process of deciding to (or not to) apply for an elk tag there- would also be a first. Your video convinced me to pull the trigger 😂 Good luck on your draws this year!
Great story telling. Easy to follow and we felt the thrills.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Cool video bro.
Nice shot! Way to grind it out.
Thanks man! Hunt of a lifetime for me so far.
Great video, I just finished watching it all. Congrats. Did you see any nice mule deer in there?
I saw maybe half a dozen does and zero bucks. I’m wondering if that density of elk pushed the deer out. I know there’s decent deer in that general area but I didn’t see any.
@@MindfulHunter
Thats the general consensus. 34 and 36 have really come on strong as premium elk units and the deer herd has really gone backwards. Seems every unit where elk start to spread the mulies seem to regress. Good luck in the future!
Awesome hunt did you see any big mule deer while your were there?
I did not. Couple does is all
I respect the raw filterless approach! Not everyone is going to like that, but I appreciate it! It’s how we really talk out there and everyone else edits it out into a dreamy story! Lol! I’ve killed a lot of elk, but there’s no better feeling than taking your first bull with a bow!! Congratulations!! Think I’m going to sub on the premiss of your rawness!!! Good luck on the upcoming season!!! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Thanks so much man. I really appreciate that. I try and make stuff I would want to watch and I try to shoot it as real as I can. I'm super glad that comes through. Good luck this season bro!
Great video!!! Congrats man!!! This will make year 4 for me with no elk. Been really close a couple times. 🤞for this year!! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks man I really appreciate that. You'll get it done man. Persistence pays off!
Damn Bud, 42 minutes of pure raw fuckin awesomeness. Loved it. I live in Colorado and hunt in the southern part. Amazing video and of course congrats on your bull.
Thanks man, it was a helluva hunt!
Heh there you fellow Canadian eh. I liked your video and the scenery was spectacular. If I can make one recommendation for any future videos you make - keep the swearing out of it. Otherwise really loved it. Congrats on the really nice bull !! I hunted Colorado this past fall and was fortunate enough to take down a nice bull as well so fully understand the feelings you went through. Best of luck to you on future hunts.
I'm glad you liked it and thanks for taking the time to leave some feedback.
Absolutely the best detailed kill sequence Ever 🙌🏻🙌🏻🤣🤣 Congratulations brother, love your style!

Fantastic video no need to have the the music just being able see through your eyes and being able to you succeed in your hunt is great . Pushing your self to the limit and being able check out just you and Gods country is the bomb . Congrats, great Bull !!!!
Thanks for the thoughtful feedback.
Great video! Love your dedication! Congratulations! From N .M .🏹🦌✌️🇺🇸
Thank you very much!
I sent ya a message on the forum site... Im in texas and have been putting in for GMU36 in NM for the last 5 years and haven't drawn yet. If you are willing, would love to pick your brain about specifics of the areas you hunted, and if your willing to provide any info, we can go over that in PM's. Great content here on this video...I truly enjoyed it. Congrats on getting it done solo!! Huge accomplishment sir!! wish there was more footage of the packout etc, but I understand the priority to get the meat out and the filming goes to the backburner.
Got it and sent a reply. Happy to help any way I can.

Good on ya man! I shoot a fixed two blade single bevel and everything I've killed has bled little to none, but every animal went less than 100 yards before tipping over. I think thats a trade off you make for penetration. Keep the vids coming!
Yeah man i totally agree. Worth it in my opinion.

I'm definitely going to try and get back to NM asap. Maybe even come down to do an OTC Aoudad hunt. You should add me on IG. @mindful_hunter
Mindful Hunter YES!! I’m VERY familiar with the aoudad hunt and what part of the unit it’s in. That’s a little south (maybe 30min) of this hunt. I’ll check you out on IG.

Damn! DRIVING from Vancouver to NM is pure dedication!
Honeymooned in Vancouver, loved it. The few glimpses of that street even looked familiar. Wound up on Hastings street one night. THAT was an eye opener. Was almost 20 years ago so maybe it’s not the same.
Thanks so much for checking out my video and leaving a comment. And Hastings is likely worse than it was 20 years ago lol. Luckily it’s a pretty contained area. I live off commercial drive which is also very popular so it’s highly likely the steers do look familiar!
Awesome video,awesome bull!
