Hands down, best Batman movies and music ever. Thanks, Danny Elfman and Tim Burton. Can't forget Steve Bartek and the musicians who played on this, also.
+Highland804 Whole heartedly agree. I love Zimmer's music, but Elfman's theme has so much more to offer in terms of true soul and vibrance. A different style for a different era of filmmaking (even if it only was around 20 years apart).
Some music just seems to be divinely inspired... And this coming from an atheist. Seriously, Elfman's music for Batman is the best for the character I've ever heard. It's awesome!!
I’d argue that Danny Elfman is best with using multiple notes and music theory. Whereas Hans Zimmer makes the most of one or few notes, which is impressive too. Zimmer is strong grounded emotions, Elfman is high powerful emotions. Both equally good in their own ways.
More like Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams. Then I guess you could say Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Kevin Conroy, though there's also Eric Radomski and other guys like him. Some would say Frank Miller too. But anyway, it l started with O'Neil and Adams.
maybe its because i was born then.. i was born in 88', and i still think the 2 Tim Burtons Batmans are the BEST. The setting, music.. everything. I think Gotham should be as Tim Burton imagined it.
I love Hans Zimmer's music but Danny nailed it 100% with this score. Absolutely my favorite musical description of the Dark Knight. Such a poetic score, so many layers.
If you listen closely to the Hans Zimmer Score there is definitely a homage to this theme. I love when there are people that, while creating new, they can have a respect for the well known and loved.
Hearing this score nostalgically brings me back to when I was a little kid and I had Batman on VHS - with the Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny commercial where Bugs erases Daffy with the pencil, and then the Diet Coke commercial with Alfred.
Flawless. I never liked any of the Batman movies but this is one of my all time favorite soundtracks (sans the Prince song of course!) Thanks for posting.
I don't know...it is a perfect score. But, the Conan the Barbarian soundtrack was pretty epic, and lots of John Williams stuff. But, Danny Elfman knocked it out of the park. A true innovator.
JAY OH Danny Elfman's Batman theme will forever be my favorite. Although you have to admit that Hans Zimmer truly grasped Christopher Nolan's vision for the Dark Knight soundtracks. But still. Timeless composition from Elfman here.
I like your comment because it's witty but I'm not sure how much I agree! This is certainly more listenable on its own but if I wanted to listen to music on its own I'd still go elsewhere rather than turn to Elfman. The great thing about Zimmer's music is that combined along with the rest of the film it almost always makes a very satisfying and immersing whole. For the record, I don't think pop is getting better AT ALL!
The TRUE Batman theme. BB/Dark Knight, etc. good music...but this is the one theme anyone pairs with Batman. It's like the Superman theme. No mistaking it...
I will not comment on any of their composier's ability but I am a firm believer of the notion that Form follows Function. So saying that, these men can only be compared by how much thier music sets the mood and tone of a scene. Elfman's Revenge gave birth to spider-man that scene was the precursor of what peter was to become and emotionally Elfman captured it. In the Dark Knight Rises well in all of them Zimmer portrayed the conflict within Bruce Wayne, batman and Gotham exceptionally well.
I understand the differences of opinion when it comes to Elfman and Zimmer, but this isn't an argument that needs sides. They both fit the style of filmmaker. Most of Burton's movies carry this tone that Elfman has created, and the same goes with Nolan and Zimmer. Both combinations created something amazing with their take on Batman, and great movies outside the superhero genre.
It's a similar sound and construct, and he also used it in Drop Zone-and maybe others-but it doesn't change the fact that the theme in Pirates of the Carribean, "his" most famous theme, was actually done by another composer in his company.
@marko5280 I think with all the readaptations done in later iteration, this one can safely be considered the official Batman theme. Shirley Walker built upon it in the Animated Series and Mask of the Phantasm, even the Arkham Asylum video game score takes musical cues from Elfman's theme.
Although the films themselves are very different, I do think a more melodic, romantic score like this would have given Nolan's trilogy a bit of extra heart and made the emotional moments feel more earned. (That's just my opinion though, and I respect others who disagree.) Simple solution: the next time you watch TDKR, hum Elfman's themes to yourself...
Nolan's theme is far more serious. I mean this freaking theme has bells in it. Nolan's theme, composed by Hans Zimmer, has more dark features in it. This theme is like a comic version.
The first time I watched Batman Begins as a kid of maybe 12 or so, I was baffled that it never played the classic leitmotif.... It colored my whole perception such that I thought the movie stank! I feel much differently about that now (I can much better appreciate Nolan's Bat over the cheesier incarnations), but Burton's films had that certain charm, that certain embrace of their quirkiness and oddity that makes them stand out. Still love Hans Zimmer's work, though. Wish he didn't get bashed.
Yes! I sent away for that WB catalogue; always wished I was rich so I could've bought that $500 Batman movie jacket with the rhinestones on it. And I wore that VHS tape right out.
Rise is good but Zimmer does the same thing for all of his songs in that soundtrack. He needs more variety with loud and soft like this. THIS sounds more mysterious while Rise only can be used to depict an intense action sequence while this has a darker undertone. I'm not saying Rise doesn't have that, but this does a better job incorporating Bruce Wayne's mental struggle. Elfman's theme for spiderman does something similar- THAT makes me tear up. I like Zimmer's "On Thin Ice"

@nastyplot555 It's similar but it's not the same theme. For the animated series they use a different score of Shirley Walker who composed a variation of the Danny Elfman's 1989 Batman movie theme.
That's Danny Elfman through and through. He has a very distinctive style.
nobody could believe that the guy who played beetlejuice would nail his batman performance. Michael Keaton is the man
***** naijaboygangsta have you seen Birdman yet?
Ars Prosthetica Haven't seen it yet, but friends of mine say its brilliant and great acting by Keaton as usual :D. Can't wait to watch
shut the fuck up

How about the guy writing the music being in Oingo Boingo?
Hands down, best Batman movies and music ever. Thanks, Danny Elfman and Tim Burton. Can't forget Steve Bartek and the musicians who played on this, also.

Shadow07Warrior1989 Zimmer’s was the one you gave a slight nod to, Elfman’s work sent chills down your spine when u heard it for the first time.

One of my favorite Batman movies!
the opening give me chills, every time.
Ultimate Batman Soundtrack!
rest in peace adam west, you wore the cape and cowl proudly and with honor.
This is the definitive batman theme, thanks Elfman! 👍
"Up The Cathedral" has always been my personal favorite from Danny Elfman. Love the horns.
Some music just seems to be divinely inspired... And this coming from an atheist. Seriously, Elfman's music for Batman is the best for the character I've ever heard. It's awesome!!
I saw this movie when I was 8 yrs. old and the theme still gives me chills.
it's unbelivable the good taste of the batman theme nothing is out of place.i think better than mozart or beethoven or any other
That’s a little out there but yes it’s a masterpiece of its own
🎉
Absolutely legendary theme by Elfman! One of the best hero themes ever, period!
Hans Zimmer's theme from Batman is great, but Danny Elfman's theme is iconic!
this is the only batman song that truly gives image of batman in dark rainy city kicking ass ;D
this is so good... everytime i hear it I get goosebumps dizzy and nauseous... that´s how good it is.
I’d argue that Danny Elfman is best with using multiple notes and music theory. Whereas Hans Zimmer makes the most of one or few notes, which is impressive too. Zimmer is strong grounded emotions, Elfman is high powerful emotions. Both equally good in their own ways.
Tim Burton, Danny Elfman and Michael Keaton these are the only three names who created the real Batman
Not to mention these three inspired what would become the Animated series.

Best batman theme song ever
I love Hans Zimmer's music but Danny nailed it 100% with this score. Absolutely my favorite musical description of the Dark Knight. Such a poetic score, so many layers.
Yes.. I love Dark Knight.. It sounds so modern and at the same time legendary..
Makes me want to build Legos
If you listen closely to the Hans Zimmer Score there is definitely a homage to this theme. I love when there are people that, while creating new, they can have a respect for the well known and loved.

I remember being a kid when this came out in 1989 and no one had ever heard a soundtrack this. It was epic.
score of my childhood
That would sound beautiful for the Batman films and the musical
This classic was Elfman?? He's about to become one of my favorites.
Danny Elfman, no one else is like him!
Ahhhh shizzz YEAH *stands up, looks up, and puts sunglasses on*
Hearing this score nostalgically brings me back to when I was a little kid and I had Batman on VHS - with the Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny commercial where Bugs erases Daffy with the pencil, and then the Diet Coke commercial with Alfred.
THIS IS BATMAN!
This theme is so heroic you can feel the presence of the dark night!
This is just a great theme that brings back so many memories. GREAT theme.
5:01 Just now i noticed that the Groose Theme from Zelda Skyward Sword looks so much this part
If you would show Mozart the movie Batman, then this is the music he would have imagined that would fit Batman.
Love you Elfman!
This score is easily what immortalized Elfman
This is the best version. Better than Zimmer

The Spider-man score is incredible.
Danny Elfman can only compose the music for Batman.... he gives it a good dark atmoshear to it
This music is just so remarkable that no other batman score will outshine this one.

This is the best theme out of all of them.
Danny Elfman
Oh, very true. He was perfect! Both in appearance and how he performed. It was awesome!
they're both great composer, you can't make a comparison imo
BATMAN THE BEST
THE BEST BATMAN
Aggiungi a THE BEST BATMAN
This is just mind blowing. Still gives me shivers.
hands down the best batman theme elfman matches john williams epicness but with batmn instead of superman
JAY OH Danny Elfman's Batman theme will forever be my favorite. Although you have to admit that Hans Zimmer truly grasped Christopher Nolan's vision for the Dark Knight soundtracks. But still. Timeless composition from Elfman here.
this makes batman transcend any other super hero, and makes me pick up my guitar
This is the classic Batman theme but Zimmer's is more of an emotional roller-coaster.
Zimmers score is crazy good but theres something even more special about Elfman, classic Hollywood, good description !!
Bro... Gustav Holst called... he wants his suite back.
a lot! danny elfman soundtrack is epic!
That theme song is Incredable

this gave me goosebumps
Zimmer was awesome, But this score was the first I heard, and still the greatest!!!
This music would so suit batman the musical
The Dark Knight score f****d the whole film up for me.
It's a similar sound and construct, and he also used it in Drop Zone-and maybe others-but it doesn't change the fact that the theme in Pirates of the Carribean, "his" most famous theme, was actually done by another composer in his company.
You Ever Noticed (Danny Elfman) + (Tim Burton) Work Together
(John Williams) + (Steven Spielburg) Perfect Matches Of Music And Imagination
@marko5280 I think with all the readaptations done in later iteration, this one can safely be considered the official Batman theme. Shirley Walker built upon it in the Animated Series and Mask of the Phantasm, even the Arkham Asylum video game score takes musical cues from Elfman's theme.
See thats where I'm at a draw, I love all of Elfmans music, and all of williams.

Not a huge fan of the Tim Burton Batmans, but I really love the adaptation of this score in the animated series intro
Hans Zimmer is one of the greatest composers of our time , but Danny Elfman and the late Shirley Walker defined How Batman's music should be like
Magnifique
