    This video means so much to me.
    As a black, curvy, female, newbie surfer in Honolulu I've often felt awkward and out of place on my board. Some people stare at me, definitely not in a nice way, and it takes a lot of willpower not to let it distract me. To focus instead on my love of the water.
    Some days its hard to work up the courage to go back out there. Knowing that you guys are out there, doing what you do, helps. So thanks for that.

    Not new...I had a boyfriend in the 80's who was a very good surfer...black man...also another almost boyfriend, black as well.....we just need to broaden our horizons and do something fun...it doesn't have to always be a 'movement' or a 'statement'...I dance flamenco...it's not a statement..just something I like to do, and I'm fairly good at..best cardio ever!...peace!

      You missed the whole point of the video. It would be a miracle if we could live in a magical wonderland where many people weren’t judged on things based off of their skin tone. Surfing isn’t generally a hobby black women OR men engage themselves in, as it can be seen as a white dominated sport. So this group was created to encourage black/brown girls to surf to normalize it SO we could be able to “do our thing regardless.”

    I'm seeing a lot of haters in these comments.. There's an emphasis on race because representation matters!! I've always wanted to surf but always feared trying it because I never seen anyone look like me (a black woman). So to see this video has inspired me to try it. I believe we can all agree (at least Americans) surfing is a predominantly white hobby. It's good to see other races/sexes doing the sport. Seeing other black women surfing has given me inspiration to try to surf. Thank you

    • @taylor6109
      @taylor6109 6 років тому +12

      Ken MacDonald pretending that racism and sexism doesn't exist is naive and childish. Statistically surfing is a white male dominated sport. It is understandable because of this people will assume, stare and may even take issue when these statistics that create stereotypes are broken. Your issues and rambling seem to be much deeper than what was expressed in this video but some inner bitterness toward the black community which is your own racism.

Other countries had slavery and hardships same as black Americans yet it’s only black Americans who ever make a huge deal out of them being black. I understand pride but this doesn’t seem like that kind of situation. It’s almost as if your saying despite being black, I can still do ________. It seems like you’re selling yourselves short all the time. Sorry if it sounds harsh, I didn’t know another way to put it 😣
