  • What's up, folks! I'm back with another Smiths reaction, and this time we listen to the final song on their 1984 self-titled album, "Suffer Little Children." As you'll see, I was curious about the title, though my impression of the themes evolved over the course of the song (and I was still a bit unclear at the end), but as I say afterward, I think this is the perfect song to end the album on, as it really encapsulates a lot of the preceding sonic terrain. So join me for another cool Smiths song as we conclude this album. Cheers!

The Moors Murders were committed by Ian Brady and Myra Hindley in the early 60's in Manchester when Morrissey was a child. They killed John Kilbride, 12 Lesley Anne Downey, 10 and Edward Evans, 17. Later in the mid 80's (after the song was released) they confessed to killing two more children, Pauline Reade, 16 and Keith Bennet, 12 (the only body never recovered) and There's little doubt he would have been aware as it was a major, major case and until Brady and Hindley's deaths was regularly in the newspapers. The song was considered controversial at the time.

Yes Morrissey has said that being from Manchester he, like everyone in Manchester was aware of the missing children and then of the "Moors murders" he was six years old and a potential victim (being a young child who played on the streets like all children then) there was at first a negative response to this song (from the media) but Morrissey wrote these "words" before the Smiths formed as he was greatly affected by the murders. He met with Lesley Anne Downey's mother and after talking with him she publicly gave her blessing for the song and the band decided to give a portion of the sales from each single sold (that this song was on) to the victims families. By the way, the phrase Suffer Little Children is from the Bible

This has always been one of my favourite Smiths songs. Very sad, I love the way they pair melancholy lyrics with sublime instrumentation.

The back story is genuinely horrific. A young morrissey lived locally. It must have cast a shadow over his childhood. One of their first songs.

The "hang the DJ" song is called Panic. If a DJ plays Spirit, don't just panic, flee for your life!

Thanks again for your reaction, it's haunting but that's because of what it's about

Caused a lot of controversy when it came out. The hairstyle of the woman at cover was similar to Myra Hindley's and since the moor murders weren't completely solved back then, it was rubbing into an open wound. Morrissey somehow came to terms with the victims familys. In my opinion, a fantastic song lyrically, bur it's exploitation, for sure.

'Suffer Little Children,' is from the New Testament: But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein."
The song itself is about the Moors Murders.

I will have to check, but I am pretty sure that this is about the Moors Murders. (edit) Yep. The lyrics gave it away anyway, but yeah, not the cheeriest of topics.

Right on, I know on some level how popular they became despite being indies. Also I don't remember what I said in this video specifically but it was shot over a year ago, much earlier in my Smiths deep-dive. Cheers.
