    To add another layer of complexity to this; we can't assume William Tanuwijaya's Chinese surname is Tan just from his Indonesian surname.
    1. The sounds "oe/u" and "oei/ui" are in there too. Which could correspond to 余 or 黃 respectively.
    2. Even if his surname were Tan, that could correspond to the Mandarin romanisation of 譚, rather than the 閩語 romanisation of 陳.
    3. His Chinese surname could be totally unrelated like 楊 or 文. It's also totally common for these kind of Sanskrit/Arabic-derived Indonesian surnames to be unrelated to a persons Chinese name. Anecdotally, many of my relatives and friends families just took whatever surname was given to them by the officer in charge of name changing at the time.
    Another expand even further, many Indonesians are of 非閩南人 descent. There's the Hakka like Ahok, Hainanese like Soe Hok Gie, and Szeyup/Cantonese like Kuncoro Wibowo. Actually some of the people you mentioned like Liem Sioe Liong are 非閩南人. Liem Sioe Liong is Hokcia (閩東人). It just happened that his surname Liem in Hokcia also coincided with the Hokkien pronunciation. But this won't always be the case. For example, while the 閩南語 pronunciation of 許 is Kho/Khouw, the 閩東語 pronunciation is Hie. On that note, Liem is actually a pretty consistent pronunciation across Southern Chinese languages. Even the Szeyup (四邑人) of central Guangdong also pronounce 林 as Liem. Even though their cousins in Guangzhou pronounce it as Lam.

      Thank you for in-depth analysis!! Yes as you said the reality is actually much more complicated that what is told in the video. And there is definitely a possibility that Tanuwijaya could also mean 黃 or even 譚, this 陳 assumption is based on personal experience and the results I found online, that most of the people I know or saw on the internet are 陳s. But thank you again for the explanation, I'm pinning this so other viewers can see.

    最後是當地華人社群會不會感覺有"人才外流的 " 現象,例如印尼華人出國深造後繼續待在當地,沒有回國因為可能有不會被重視甚至完全得不到機會的顧慮?
    對不起我問得太多了ㅠㅠ 因為很好奇其他地區的海外華人是怎樣生活的,然後第一次看到你這樣的頻道,真的很lucky!!!

    I think It is possible that the naming took the sound of the Chinese surname but it would be absurd to guess the names and then generalize. Indonesian Chinese came from various dialects such as Hakka, hokkien, teowchew, Hainan, etc. when converted to Pinyin will produce different pronunciations. the surname Zhang 張 becomes Cong in Hakka and Thio in Hokkien.The result is Indonesian surename will be different depending on the descent.

      Chinese culture were banned during the Soeharto regime including Chinese schools. So, a lot of Chinese Indonesians go to Christian schools since they still allow Chinese customs (praying to ancestors, pork consumption, alcoholic drinks, etc.) and a lot of them converted to Christianity because of this. Buddhist schools weren't common back then since the Buddhists were still struggling to get recognised by the government. Nowadays, Soeharto has fallen and Chinese culture are returning. Even Chinese New Year is recognised as a national holiday. Even though most Chinese Indonesians don't use the traditional Chinese naming system anymore, a lot of Chinese use their original family names again as last names, not the Indonesianised ones. Currently, there are some Buddhist and Chinese schools as well.

      @armtjoa Рік тому

      Yes, you can, but it's a hassle since you have to revise a lot of documents which people perceive as a waste of time and money. Moreover, I observe that the Chinese Indonesians currently prefer a combination of Indonesian name and Chinese family name. Although, there is a trend of using their original Chinese family names again after the fall of Soeharto, not the Indonesianised ones, they don't use the traditional Chinese naming system anymore. Since Indonesians are very diverse, Indonesian names may include local ethnic names, Western names, Sanskrit names, and Arabic names. For example, my son has an Arabic first name, a mix of Javanese and Sanskrit names as his middle name, and Hokkien family name with Dutch spelling as a last name.

    Well since the fall of orde baru in 90s there was no rule to localized our name anymore. We are given freedom to choose any name. But now we see most of chinese-indonesian still named their baby locally or.. the more popular choice is using western name like angel, stefanie, steven, andrew, etc... proofing that even now most of them, they prefer western name instead of chinese one.

      Not really, it’s only mean that the Chinese Indonesians were suppressed for so long to freely exercise/express their cultural custom, language n tradition that now even themselves r no longer capable of embracing their our cultural identity n be proud of it. There r some few other reasons, in younger generations the more universal reason is the banana effect, they just don’t think their culture is cool enough. Another reason is fitting in or wanted to be accepted by majority in the society/country that doesn’t value or share their culture, this can be seen in US how Trump trying to make Mexicans feel bad for using their mother tongue n I believe many ended up abandoning their culture just in order to be accepted.....
