George was totally different from the way Sheldon talked about him.That could be because Mary paid more attention to him as a little boy and he was more influenced by her early in his developement which was a mistake because George was a helluva dad and Georgie is alot like George was as a young man and his solid development as a man shows that.
In short, It took Sheldon being a father to understand his own father
If Sheldon sees this man as a bad father, imagine how Sheldon's kids would view him. He would have to pardon his dad to hope his children would like him or pardon him for the dad he is/was one day
In the show Young Sheldon, Sheldon lacks emotional quotient maybe this is the reason he misunderstands his father, It was shown in an episode where he watches Beverly Hills to tell Missy what happened (cause she's grounded) but he never figures out what's going on with the scene until Missy gives her a cue about the background music.

Sheldon’s dad never put Sheldon on such a high pedestal and that annoyed Sheldon . George was there for all his children while Mary was 98%of the time focused on Sheldon . When watching young Sheldon I think the George was the better parent compared to Mary.

What we learn in Young Sheldon is that Sheldon is not a reliable narrator. Neither is he an astute observer of human behaviour and emotions.
I agree. George wanted sheldon to have the best chance when it comes to education opportunities. His other children, Missy and Georgie, were great characters. Georgie is smart when it comes to entrepreneurship and Missy is smart when it comes to socializing and interactING with people.

The scene that broke my heart on George's behalf was during the Season 4 finale, when Mary claimed that he spends his entire life doing whatever he wants, only for him to point out that he never wanted to get stuck coaching football or getting repeatedly berated by his entire family, and that she never bothered to ask him.

This show definitely shows how losing your father young can warp perceptions, had George lived a few more years i bet he and Sheldon would've made peace
I just consider the show fan fiction due to how inaccurate it is to TBBT. I hope these "good times" happened before the "Bad times" and scumbag George will be shown this season. Or he could be "whitewashing" it.

1) He defended his son Georgie from being manhandled by a grown man.
2) He protected his house by keeping an “intruder” out.
3) He asked and respected Veronica’s decision to stay, like a gent.
All the while keeping a calm demeanor.

Thing is; Sheldon does demonstrate in TBBT that things aren’t as he remembers them. The key one is when he’s trying to convince Georgie to come to his wedding and Georgie reveals how he was the one who took care of everything when Sheldon was in Germany because Mary was a mess after George Sr died and Sheldon is surprised because he thought Mary always took care of everything.
To his defense, Sheldon wasn’t around during this period, he could only relate to his mother testimony. It’s not truly something that he didn’t remember correctly.
@@teencritik5512 but that's the problem, Sheldon can't understand beyond the words he hears and actions he sees, so everytime someone told him a lie to protect him, unlike any other person who would understand everything when they grew up, Sheldon wouldn't and would believe that lie until someone said otherwise, so he can't see the sacrifices his father made for his family.
He starts seeing his father in a different light after he becomes a father himself.
Sheldon left for cal-tech right after his dad died. He and Mary had already come back from Germany before George died.
Yea, Sheldon have very high IQ but almost no EQ at all. As someone who also have somewhat low EQ and need longer to mentally grown up I can understand.
I think because Mary was so focused on Sheldon, he mostly felt he needed to step up for Missy and Gerogie
George wasn't perfect, and didn't have all the answers but he did try to do right by all three of his kids. Since Sheldon is narrating the prequel from the future, and has been confirmed to have children himself, it's likely that he finally understands more of George's well meaning nature. Our parents' behaviour usually makes sense to us once we start raising our own children.
Sheldon narrated that his son's name is Leonard. He continued to narrate that he wanted his child to be Leonard Nimoy Cooper and Amy voice overs to say "You should be thankful I let you named him leonard." It is confirmed that Sheldon was a husband and father and wife during the narration of Young Sheldon.
Chuck admit he made a mistake killing George Sr in the universe but he does well by fixing all the bad stuff that we thought happened (especially if you saw the episode that came out today)
George Sr was definitely a warrior in a garden, based on how he handled the boyfriend of Veronica's mom.
This man died today and I cried this man shows how great you can be a still lead a mediocre life and goal is to find happiness in the smallest things and cherish every moment with your loved ones

A hidden plot in young Sheldon was realising that George was the better parent overall when TBBT made him out to be awful
It shows how dads are under appreciated and misunderstood especially the dads that are getting older.
I believe the shock Sheldon went through seeing his father with another woman and then dying so soon after he likely suppressed the memories to avoid the pain

It makes sense why TBBT version of Sheldon would hold George in such high disdain. Once George's affair came to light, it likely overshadowed all of George's positive qualities. Sheldon adores Mary, despite her overbearing nature, as well as Connie, who makes no secret that she doesn't think that George is good enough for her beloved daughter.
Yeah we have to understand that Sheldon is an unreliable narrator. He may have an eidetic memory. But that doesn't mean he is shielded from his own biases.
And it wasn’t even an affair. It was a temptation that he fought and finally overcame, similar to Mary and the young pastor (though I found him creepy - probably that dreadful moustache).
What they both reveal is a marriage under severe stress and normal folk trying to deal with it.

I wish they would've added the episode where Sheldon picked his dad over his mom when he found out that Caltech sent them a letter. I love how George confronted Mary that he's also Sheldon's parent and Mary shouldnt be making all the decisions by herself.
Sheldon knew that his dad had his back when it comes to getting opportunities to improve his education but his mom was too anxious.
Right. George wanted the best for all the kids and encouraged optimism and curiosity. Mary however only catered to sheldon and often limiting his abilities but wouldmalways call him "special"

Thats was a really great moment he didn't even say he was trying to undermine her just that he wanted to be involved. It's very possible he'd agree with Mary but she never gave him the chance.

but the Young Sheldon episode where he goes to dinner with "Melissa" (Missy) will always hold a place in my heart ❤
Agreed, it's a little odd, considering that the two characters are polar opposites. However, they were portrayed very well, showing that he has excellent range.
I can agree with you on who played George but my interpretation is that the best way for Sheldon to describe his dad was to use Leonard's bully as a base because the actress who plays the music teacher is also in BBT. So I feel Sheldon uses some people as reference to tell his story

I always loved that scene where George and Missy went to Red Lobster! When she revealed that "Melissa" was her given name I was thrilled that I would share the same name as Sheldon's twin sister! The differences between Missy and I are that everyone calls me "Melissa" and not "Missy." I only have one older sister. I have no twin siblings.
George Sr. was never an awful parent. In The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon portrays his dad as this awful parent who cheated on his wife, but as you watch Young Sheldon, not only does it disprove him being an awful parent, but he is actually a great, and understanding one. Hell, he's a better parent than Mary. And you can really see why he cheats on Mary. I'm surprised he stuck with her so long.

To be fair, the Big Bang Theory's later seasons, especially his interactions with Georgie, do heavily imply that Sheldon either willfully or subconsciously distorted his own memories of his family.
That's not even considering the stuff they intentionally kept from him so as to not burden him emotionally.
Yeah, the obvious answer is that TBBT's writers didn't think that far ahead and only started fleshing stuff out after the fact, even if it contradicted previous episodes, with Young Sheldon taking it even further ,but the idea of Sheldon's view on his family being skewed IS there at least. So its not that far fetched.
I personally like to think though that the Sheldon who's narrating the story is him after becoming a father and finally gaining the emotional maturity needed to understand what he previously couldn't

People really don’t understand that this is exactly how it goes when you’re a kid you think everybody’s got certain ways of doing it you don’t understand why people do what they do and then as an adult you have a different perspectives now you can if you choose, look back and realize you were wrong, most of your childhood and the people you thought were evil really just people who have different shit going on and you didn’t understand
That makes sense. My grandpa died and I hear some of my Mom’s siblings and grandma started to resent him despite his best effort. It wasn’t until they went to counseling that they realized their resentment was a manifestation of their grief rather than anything he actually did.
I kind of think that Sheldon had a bad perception about anything other that science in TBBT timeline. Sheldon might have depended on Mary and Meemaw for social cues and they often degraded George Sr. So his general perception about his father was bad. But by end of TBBT he becomes more open-minded and starts developing social perception of his own. When he's narrating Young Sheldon he's already a father and a husband and develops a view-point about his father which is much kinder and understanding.

It’s kinda sad, adult Sheldon almost villainized his father, but George was actually put the time in and did his best.
It's true, though Sheldon's view of his father and his family shifts over the course of TBBT as he becomes more self-aware.
Well there was no intention of a spin off in tbbt, that was the narrative was created by the writers and they changed it to make a wholesome sitcom.

George's moments in the show often make me cry because it is a constant reminder that he's trying time and time again to be a good father, a fair father and a good husband. Mary on the other hand had a very toxic personality. Her mother keeps saying how she ended up with him and how she could do better but it's the other way around. Truthfully, a great TV character
Visual and narrative proof how women make other women toxic, with a sense of unearned and underserved privilege. Had George Sr. lived a little longer, Missy's future may have been better
I like the scene where the abusive boyfriend of Georgie's girlfriend's mom comes to pick the girl up. The boyfriend shows his true colors, and George punches him out.

This aged well after today's episode, now we know that George. Sr did NOTHING wrong and in fact the only thing that we had against him- was a mere misunderstanding. This guy didn't get crap for so much he did, respect!
I feel that Sheldons mom colored a lot of his opinions after George died. I wish they would do a one off BBT episode in an alternate timeline with George still alive where Sheldon is smart but also a bit more social and compassionate.
I could see the show being a way for Sheldon to realize that his dad wasn't as bad as he described on TBBT. After my dad had an online affair with a woman 10 years younger than him, all I was was angry at him. All I could see was his flaws. But I came to realize that my dad make a stupid, stupid mistake, but he wasn't a bad father at all. He would make sure that I got to all of my doctors appointments, to school on time, to buy me pads when I needed them (he never complained about it), and he would be sure to give me money for food or would buy me something to eat so that I wouldn't go hungry. He also would tuck me in at night, especially if I had a nightmare. He even quit his job so that me and my sibling were taken care of while mom was at work

The fact that the way Sheldon described his father on the Big Bang Theory has little in common with the way George Sr was on Young Sheldon is not a problem at all. The way Sheldon frequently described the other characters on the Big Band Theory had almost no reality to his descriptions. So the fact that Sheldon gave a negative description of his father is consistent with the negative opinions he had of every other character on the BBT.
I've really loved what they did with his character in this show. They could have played the whole thing as a big joke, like heard not seen like Ms. Wolowitz, or worse yet make him an actual villian, but he's the true stand-out character in my opinion.
the problem with this it's whenever the writers decided to belittled George in TBBT they werent thinking in the prequel of young sheldon and how much backlash Sheldon is getting for being so smart but at the same time so soulless to notice how a great dad he had and made it worse with George passing not getting the respect he deserved
TBBT is in late seasons when Young Sheldon started. So it makes sense that the writers would bash George Sr. as a premise in TBBT but change it in Young Sheldon

I like to think Sheldon intentionally misremembers what his dad was like earlier in the series because of he lacked the emotional intelligence he would later developed. Perhaps it was easier to remember his dad as a angry, drunk idiot so that the grief wouldn’t be so hard.
Obviously the real reason is because when they made young Sheldon they wanted to make George SR likeable by audiences. And thus there are discrepancies between how he is described in TBBT and portrayed in Young Sheldon. It’s not necessarily exclusive to him but I notice it more with George.
Remember that everything about George was Sheldon's memory of him, greatly influenced by his overbearing mother.
Mary and Sheldon created a narrative in their heads absolving themselves of any accountability. Better to remember George as the bad guy than admit fault of your own.
I found Mary in TBBT to be utterly terrible as a mother and a person - judgemental, hypocritical, preachy.
Still, she was better than Leonard's mother. That woman was a straight-up psycho. The kind of scientist who would justify human testing.
I liked Mary in TBBT but I loathed her in Young Sheldon.

I don't think Sheldon truly saw him as a piece of shit, quite the opposite really. I think he knew the type of father he had - a loving caring one. And I think that losing his dad at such a young age made him realize that he lost a huge support system, which he needed to cope with. I think his coping mechanism was to distort his memories of his dad and paint him as a villain in order to convince himself that he truly didn't lose all that much; when in reality he lost a whole lot and he knew it. Throughout TBBT, even though Sheldon (and his family in their appearances) take jabs at George, when it matters most they all acknowledge the man he truly was. I really think that the vilifying of George was his own way of coping that he lost a super great dad! And if TBBT didn't make that clear, Jim Parsons' narration over YS does make it clear that Sheldon knew deep down that his dad was a great one!

I like to think of Young Sheldon as Old Sheldon reflecting on his life after earning a noble prize with his family side being his family explaining their situations.
I think its clear sheldon exaggerated about George Sr on TBBT, cause hes a great stand up guy
The scene I liked was the BBT episode when Sheldon needed inspiration and found his VHS tape had been over-recorded with a half-time pep talk by George to the HS football team. And how those words were exactly right in that moment. And for the viewers who’ve lost our dads, what we wouldn’t give to stumble on a pep talk like this.
George Sr is one of my favorite characters very stand up guy takes care of his family great father, I feel like Mary took him for granted and didn't appreciate him till the final season, and his relationship with Georgie seemed like a good buddy relationship just busting each other's chops more than a bad father son relationship
I have been waiting for this! George was an amazing father! Considering Nary's world was Sheldon, George was a great dad to all of his kids equally.
What makes me soo sad is the fact Mary behaves as if she does everything for all of them but in reality she does what's best for Sheldon. She almost always neglects missy and Georgie and treats Sheldon as if he is her only child. That's why George is the better parent cus he never shows double standards and treat all his kids equally.
Mary in TBBT was a better parent than Mary in YS , George go the opposite effect in the statement sadly
I wouldn't even say she did what was best for Sheldon, because she sheltered and coddled him too much, even to the point of holding him back from big opportunities because she didn't want to let him go. Mary did what was best for Mary.
I imagine that after George cheated (don’t blame him btw) Mary and Connie made absolutely certain that Sheldon would be poisoned against him. Given Sheldon’s nonexistent social intelligence as well as never being able to change his opinion, he was the perfect weapon.

Mary coddled Sheldon and made sure he was never anything less than “her little boy”. Someone she can control and blind obedience is a given. To make herself look like an Angel, Mary has to demonize George.

I feel like Mary kinda turned the kids against George by bad mouthing him and getting him mad in front of the them to make him seem like the bad guy. But in TBBT Sheldon always made George out to be this alcoholic abusive jerk but he seemed like a wholesome sitcom dad.
George is one of the best fathers on TV. He ain’t perfect, but the man sure cared for his family
I suspect that what really happened is Lance Barber did such a good job making us love George Cooper that the writer's were forced to retcon a lot of Sheldon's comments about his dad. The biggest example is it became unimaginable that George could ever cheat on Mary.
Im rewatching TBBT and watching Young Sheldon for the first time and every time Sheldon brings up his dad its a bit frustrating because i can see how much he cared and tries really hard to be the best Father he knew how to be. He was far from perfect but the effort went unnoticed and ignored until years after his death. Fortunately my dad is still alive so im able to reflect and talk to my dad and recognize what he was doing

This sitcom hit me hard George Cooper remind me of my dad back in the late 80 and early 90:ies. Daddy and George are also similar in appearance, similar hairstyle and clothing style 🥺
Sheldon is a spoiled, self centered, pampered individual who rarely acknowledges anyone else’s feeling, accomplishments, sacrifices, intelligence or qualities. Mary fostered and enabled his behavior. Even in TBBT Mary disparaged George so her frequent ambivalence towards George modeled Sheldon’s attitude toward his dad. George is a good man and father. My second favorite character after Missy. In fact, George, Missy and Georgie seem real.
Those three characters had the most room to grow freely in the show. Mary was seen quite often in TBBT and so we knew what to expect from her. I like her a great deal more in this show than in TBBT because, despite being religious, she's not portrayed as a racist, religious nutjob. But George, Georgie, and Missy are all great characters.
George Snr is my fav YS character. He is so much more then TBBT makes him out to be. Protective and caring above all

I feel like if they knew about young Sheldon early on when creating TBBT, then they would have been kinder to his character

George is my fave charac in the show. Such a character with all the nice attitude but does not get reciprocated by his family. Tormented most of the times. Plus Lance has such a cute smile and puppy eyes!
George reminds me of my dad so much honestly makes me cry to watch this.

i think theirs a diffrence cause the sheldon from big bang was still basically that unappreciative kid while the one telling the story basically is now a father who sees how much his dad really did

The biggest problem is Sheldon said he caught his dad cheating with a cheerleader ,which led to the 3 knock rule , easy fix is have Sheldon walk in on Dad and mom doing some role play where mom is dressed up .

Mary in George's marriage is a very clear example why using protection is important. Marriage or not having kids with someone you barely know is usually a good way to screw your life up
honestly i never really thought bad about Sheldon's dad watching TBBT because we see many cases where Sheldon views or voices situations WAY differently than how they are but that's just his perspective
Can we add that he passed up not just one, but two promotions to keep the family happy in Medford only to have Sheldon end up a student at the school he could have been coaching at....I love that George is humanized and I think he's a better father than the helicopter mom, Mary who only hovers over Sheldon and the other two kids are sideline distractions. Update: I hit send just as this was being covered. LoL
Like Sheldon said in penultimate episode of Young Sheldon, for many years he focused on his father shortcomings. But since Sheldon became father himself and reached the same age, there was true understanding of his father.
Honestly am really glad that the George Adult Sheldon described is completely different. I think the directors knew what they were doing with portrayals. He was often misunderstood even when he tried his best to be the best father and husband to them....
Watching TBBT, I hated Geroge Sr coz of the being a beer drinker. And watching Young Sheldon has made me realise that he isn't a bad person but has sacrificed the things that would make him feel whole and a man for his family. Now that's a bigger man!
If it weren't for young Sheldon, we would never have had the insight to find out what a good dad George was. It makes me sad that all of those experiences weren't able to be mentioned. I don't remember if YS ever overlapped with TBBT or if that was over b4 YS. We only got half the picture so it's like whiplash, since it hits later.
Young Sheldon truly gave us some heart warming tears and moments, and George was a great father to his kids and even though he slipped up in his marriage, he was a good husband to Mary.
Honestly, I think the difference between what Sheldon remembers about his dad and what we see in Young Sheldon is very relatable. It’s very hard for most kids to step back and judge their relationship with their parents fairly, especially when it’s as complicated as someone like Sheldon’s. I love how flawed their family dynamic is in the show, it helps you appreciate the good moments while demonstrating how imperfect we all are.
I only watched the last 2 seasons of the young Sheldon show but still grew to love George as one of my favorite tv dads ever.

I would say this George Cooper Sr is a great father to Sheldon, Georgie and Missy. But I would say the best moment when he took Sheldon to the or sort of if you took him to NASA and that was a sort of my favorite part of the moment when Sheldon was disappointed he wanted to see rocket take off and when it was raining 🌧️ and his dad would ask him about Sheldon usually tells him about something and I'm like wow that was like a best moment 🙏, I would say young Sheldon is one of the best shows and one of my favorite prequel series of The Big bang theory still I still have love of the show The Big bang theory not everyone else really enjoys the show I can understand but Young Sheldon is best👏❤️💯

I feel the reason why Sheldon had that arbitrary view on his father is because of his death, going back into his old habits because he felt alone again. Probably why he looks up to Leonard and penny so much they remind him of his parents
The crazy part is this wasn’t even his best acting gig as a father and role model. Bill Ponderosa showed me if you love your kids enough, it’s completely okay to kidnap them from their mother. Pondy also taught me how to be the coolest, while also showing me the value of honesty. He pulled up to me in his car, as he opened his passenger side door and about a 30 pack worth of empties fell out, he offered me an aspirin (that did not look like an aspirin) before I could even say anything, he came clean and let me know “it ain’t an aspirin” I was so impressed by his honesty and how cool he looked, I had no choice but to take it anyways.
Morale of the story, Pondy > George Sr. As far as tv dads go
I honestly started tearing up near the end. I wish my dad could be as caring as George.
The differences in how George Sr is portrayed in TBBT compared to how he actually was on Young Sheldon is a prime example of how in Morden society a man is never good enough no matter how noble, dedicated or how hard he works for his family. George Sr is the kind of man society needs, with flaws but when he's needed he steps up
Lance Barber and the writers did a wonderful job bringing this character to life and making him adored after TBBT pretty much villified him.

The entire cast is fantastic and I am really gonna miss this show.
I'm theorizing that Sheldon may have glossed over and misread all of George's best qualities. In the Big Bang Theory, he does meet friends that help him learn and grow, able to inform him of 'non-optional social conventions' and so on. I'm hoping by the end of Young Sheldon, there will be a voice over where Sheldon comes to the realization that George wasn't a bad father. I believe there are many hints going into this theory. Ultimately, I hope the affair was big misunderstanding and George went along with the misunderstanding because (maybe) he was protecting someone else in a more shameful truth. But I think that's asking for too much.

Came here after seeing the episode where George died, he's like Atticus Finch and Jonathan Kent: he's a father that many should aspire to be, I wish my dad were like him, even knowing it was coming it just shocked and saddened me when he died

I can see now why people find this show interesting. It’s not really about Sheldon, it’s about his family. They had to work hard to love someone like Sheldon; a genius but clearly neurodivergent child whose social ineptitude and heightened intellect and senses put a wall between him and the world. His father uses some really cool parenting strategies to bridge the gap between himself and his kids. He seems simple, but compassion and understanding are very deep. It’s touching but sad that Sheldon didn’t realize how much his dad did for him until later.
my Aunt Flo came during summer school and my dad knew before I called him from the nurse what I needed lol he was happy to help. just still freaky he knew what I was calling home for . im grateful to still have my father. this is why im a daddy girl

He fought to keep a girl from going to an abusive home, that's as straight as they come. He was a standup guy in my eyes.
I’ve always thought that Sheldon’s stories about his dad in TBBT was his way of coping with his dad’s death, and that the George we see in YS is the real George.
