This was a time before Galileo and Newton. Heliocentrism was incomplete, since the concepts of inertia and gravity hadn't existed. It's really little better than geocentrism. Both had good accuracy but neither can explain everything. Heliocentrism was backed by beauty and simplicity while geocentrism was backed by authority and theology. Neither was backed by "real" scientific theory.
