The only real reason he heals his teammates aren't to protect them, but so he has test subjects to experiment on. Also the medic apparently surgically stole and attached his teammates souls to himself, so when he died in the comics, he tricked the devil into letting him live by giving him one of his teammates souls. Also, referring to your questions about TF1, there is a game called "team fortress classic", which is a recreation of the actual TF1. it doesn't have the same characters, but it does have the same classes, and no, it's not as funny and whimsical as TF2, it's more serious. Within the lore, there are 3 generations of mercenaries, the first gen including the likes of abraham lincoln and nikola tesla. the second gen is the one we see in TF1 (and also became antagonists in the comics), and the third gen of mercs are the ones in TF2

Sniper thinks of himself as a professional assassin, while he's also characterized as a sociopath whose trying hard to be good at his job, because he'll never have the approval of his parents. Soldier thinks of himself as a badass patriotic solider while he's also a screaming maniac who keeps pointing the rocket launcher at his feet instead of at his enemies. Medic is the most important character on your team during gameplay, so they characterize Medic as having a god complex. Demoman is either the world's greatest explosives expert or a drunk idiot who keeps detonating the stickybombs while he's standing on them. The overall war doesn't matter. A lot of the character personalities derive from the writers predicting the type of people the class would end up catering to, and then simultaneously writing them around how it feels to play that character, while also making fun of them. So when the story in the comics continues, they'll do stuff like show Sniper grew up in muscular jock-paradise, while spending his childhood being a nerd who throws stones at kids while sitting up in a tree. In the lore, they know the playerbase won't really care about what the war is about, so canonically the war doesn't matter to anybody but the two identical old men who are running everything.
