I don't know how anyone can argue Hannibal wasn't the best general in history. Against the odds and difficulties he faced, his campaign was nothing short of genius.
It is interesting to note, that Hannibal rated himself only as the third greatest general in history (after Alexander and Pyrrhus), but only because he had been defeated by Scipio at Zama. If it wasn't for this defeat he would consider himself the greatest general ever. By the way the battle of Zama video is coming to my channel in about something like 7-10 days, it is in the final stage of production right now :).
@Sebastian Sapieżyński my current plan is to make 3 videos about 3 decisive battles of the Punic Wars which are in my opinion Cannae, Zama and Siege of Carthage. I don't plan to do other Hannibal's battles in the near future, but I don't rule them out either. after siege of Carthage I will probably do siege of Alesia (52 BC), in fact siege of Alesia might even come before the siege of Carthage, as I haven't started on siege of Carthage and siege of Alesia is around 50% complete already.
Excellent video. Just a small correction: the roman legionaries adopted the gladius hispaniensis only in 209 BC. At Cannae they still used mainly the La Tene B sword and, possibily, the ξίφος.
The quality of you're videos is astonishing! Completely at the level of other great channels like history march or the armchair historian! I am very happy to announce to you today that I am your 262nd subscriber of the many thousands that will follow. I wish you all the best.
Please, is there any famous manual/base book on military tactics from antiquity, such as wedge, square, pincer, etc, infantry line formation, cavalry, slingshot, etc? Or even a .PDF?
hello I liked the animation , I m gonna hit the subscribe button and I hope to see your improvement in the future.A small suggestion : try make a full serie
Thank you! I have two videos in progress right now. One is Siege of Constantinople (1453) and Battle of Zama. Battle of Zama will be made in the same style as the Cannae video, but Siege of Constantinople will be somewhat different. Hoping to release one of those in a few days.
The one thing nobody talks about is Hannibals army cleaning up the battlefield with massive fire cairns. It took days to do this and this is one reason Hannibal didn't match immediately on Rome.
The whole battlefield can be seen from a small hill. I was there in about 1967, as a 14 year old boy. The hill it self was most likely the position of Hannibal's Headquarters. The river was a small very shallow stream when I saw it. And from the appearance of its slope was never very deep. It was hard to imagine that, that many men crowded into that small of space. In the 1960's farmers were still, even nearly 2,000 years after the battle, collecting bits and pieces of weapons, after rains, and plowing.
What a good channel, sadly it didnt get its popularity in time, i guess owner of this got demoralized and stopped. The battle itself was so painful to watch, such a advantage lost because of such a stupid choices
Thank you! Sure, I will probably do some of the Alexander's famous battles, but a little bit later I guess. My plan for next few videos: The Destruction of Pompeii (Mount Vesuvius Eruption of 79AD) I will be dropping this one either today or tomorrow Siege of Constantinople (1453) Siege of Alesia Battle of Zama Siege and destruction of Carthage
@@parabellum9240 All right, my friend, as a Turk, I will be waiting for the video of the siege of Constantinople, please tell us about Fatih Sultan Mehmet.
The orientation of the armies, in respect to the river, is not known from actual eye witnesses of the battle. As far as I have been able to determine. Having been at the battlefield, it makes more sense to imagine the Romans formation with its back to the stream/river.Hannibal it seemed to me would have managed the battle from the hill. From the the top of the hill to the center of the battle is about the distance of about two soccer fields. So much of this depiction is ,, presumed.
The center of the battle is well confirmed, from the amount of artifacts that are continuously found by local farmers, after plowing and the rains, over the years.

I personally think that Napoleon is the best general in history, but Hannibal is a close second
Yess

Thank you so much! Glad you liked my videos! More videos will be coming soon :)
I hope a new video I uploaded today will not disappoint you :)
Having 2 commanders who fundamentally disagree on strategy alternate command on a day to day basis sounds like a recipe for disaster.
Very good animation and good explanation of what was happening at the time, good work.

Thank you for the insight, that's very interesting. I hope to be able to visit that place some day too!
It's amazing to know even after 2,000 years, people today are still discovering stuff from Cannae.
good work
